Celebrating French Pride at Magnetic Hill School!

WHAT'S HAPPENING

It was a busy week at Magnetic Hill. We had so much fun celebrating our French Culture on the Hill. Monday morning, we had the chance to listen to our French Local Artist Art Richard. He was presenting in new show Bonjour Canada! So much fun! The students and staff were dancing and singing along with M. Richard. In addition, we had a daily question each morning. One class received a prize for the correct answer each day. We also listened to French music every morning. What a great way to start our day! Some classes made a Fanion (little flag) on what the French culture represents for them. Finally, to close the week, we had a Tintamarre throughout the school. The students really enjoyed this. They had brought instrument created from home to make some noise. What a great experience for all of us!

Salisbury Elementary School- March 18-22 marked French Pride Week in New Brunswick (Semaine provinciale de la fierté française)! To acknowledge NB’s Acadian culture, Salisbury Elementary students and staff enjoyed a Pets de Soeur made by Nanna’s Bakery! Pets de Soeur is a French-Canadian dessert that was originally made from leftover pie dough to avoid waste. It is layered with butter and brown sugar, rolled, sliced, placed in a pan, covered with additional brown sugar, and baked. Yum!

Arnold H McLeod School – At Arnold H. McLeod we like to celebrate positive behavior. Our code of conduct, or LEARN Expectations are as follows: Look, listen and grow, Excited and Engaged, Accepting of Everyone, Respectful and Responsible and Never Give up. In September classes pick the ways they want to celebrate. This gives them voice and choice. Each month we have a LEARN Celebration. Topics students choose ranged from a Holiday Themed Craft, Extra Outdoor PE Stations, Show and Tell or Teach the Teacher, Mad Science Presentations, Movies, Stuffies and PJ Day or even something simple like Bingo and Board Games. This winter we had to pivot. We had no snow for Outdoor Winter Stations, so we improvised, and the students were flexible flamingoes and had Indoor Stations. Students could choose between 5 stations: colour, draw and doodle, Wii Dance, Read in the Library, purposeful play, or Lego Club. Stations were repeated in multiple areas of the schools with different staff members. What happened for which we did not plan? We had a k-5 celebration versus doing them separately k-2 and 3-5. Siblings found and played with each other. Students visited their former teachers who they never get to see. Students were able to move, with supervision, independently through the school. Students whose first language is not English found friends with their languages to speak with at school; 400 students and 66 adults all working and playing in unison. Once they finish their celebrations, students then function as global citizens and provide feedback to school administration. Sometimes they mention a repair that needs to be completed, or a desire for some new equipment, but often is to show gratitude and appreciation for their school. They are grateful and respectful. Staff is proud of our resilient and persevering students.

. Bernice MacNaughton High School - Mme Diotte’s FILA 10 students went on an experiential learning visit on March 26th which, through the use of the “Mon histoire” (My Story) project, provided an authentic second language learning opportunity with French-speaking residents from the Shannex Ocean and Gordon Hall nursing homes. The students had many positive comments about the experience, several stating that they would like to visit again. According to Grace Johnson, the Ocean Hall Recreation Coordinator, the residents of the home loved the activity as well and have been talking about it since! She also added that a resident was so grateful about being able to speak in French that she cried happy tears. It demonstrated the impact that an intergenerational visit can have in benefiting both students and residents. This visit provided an opportunity for experiential and authentic language learning in a meaningful and impactful way.

Student Welcome Centre- The Student Welcome Centre held our first Early Years Strong Start event the last week of March and it was a great success! We invited parents of students who's first language is not English and who are entering Kindergarten this September to come for discussion and learning. While students were in a classroom learning how to introduce themselves using a Qball, learning how to write their name with Playdoh and dry erase markers, dancing to an alphabet song, going on a colour hunt, colouring by number and listening to stories about Spring; parents were discussing how to prepare their child for Kindergarten and expressing their excitement and concerns. Overall, students had a great time learning some key skills for school and parents were able to ask questions about school, learn the platforms that parents use for school purposes, understand the bus system, and meet new people.

United Way 211 Information Line - As we know life can be difficult for many of our residents at the best of times, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a new layer of stress and anxiety for everyone. Information is changing rapidly. Demand for critical social services and community programs has increased and in many cases the way these supports are delivered has had to change. That's why the United Way launched the 211 Service in NB: to help every person find the support they need. 211 is free, confidential, and acts as the front door to support, helping people navigate the complex network of government, community and social programs and services quickly to find what they need for their unique situation. When someone contacts 211, they are connected with a real person who will ask questions about their situation and then suggest programs or services that can help. Often, they can be registered on the spot. This eliminates the stress of trying to wade through the changing information we are all processing each day.

Phones are answered 24/7 in 170 languages.

Whether you are looking for Government Resources, Mental Health Resources, Food Access Resources or Financial Relief Resources 211 can help you.
