Do you suffer from knee, hip or leg pain? You are not alone. CDC studies show that 30% of adults have reported some form of knee, hip, or ankle joint stiffness or pain in a 30 day period. The hip and knee joints are incredible marvels of the human body. At times they have to withstand up to 6 times your body weight in force. The knee joint is the second most complicated joint in the body and has to move in many directions including forward, backward, side to side and rotation. These different movements are called accessory motions and are needed for normal walking, running and bending. When you experience pain in the side of the hip, groin, thigh or knee, you may have difficulty with these accessory motions. Prolonged sitting, injuries, arthritis, and disease can affect accessory motions. With every day use, tissues around the hip and knee joints tighten, leading to a gradual loss of motion. This causes a lot of pressure to build up on specific parts of the joints.

When Your Motion is Lost. When you lose the move- ment of the hip, knee or ankle joints, your muscles have to take on the abnormal strain. This leads to common aches and pains experienced by millions of people. Many people feel that medication will help solve their hip, knee or leg pain. While medica- tion can help to decrease inflammation and pain, it cannot address the root cause of the problem. Most pain in the hip, thigh, knee or leg comes from poor flexibility, strength or coordination. Treating Leg Pain. To determine the source of your leg pain our physical therapists examine your walking, squatting, joint movement, comparing the strength and mobility of the joints. A comprehen- sive treatment plan, including special hands-on techniques, is made to achieve the fastest relief and the longest lasting results. If you are suffering from hip, knee or leg pain, call us today to learn how we can eliminate your pain and put a spring back in your step! Look inside to learn more and say good- bye to that aching knee or hip!

DOES ARTHRITIS PAIN GRIND YOU DOWN? Millions of Americans suffer from arthritis pain every day, taking Ibuprofen and stronger medications to numb the pain and address the ongoing inflammation. The definition of arthritis is joint inflammation, however the term has acquired a wider meaning. Arthritis is now used as a generic term for osteoarthritis and other conditions that affect joints. The pattern, severity and location of arthritis symptoms can vary depending on the specific form of the disease.

Typically, arthritic conditions are characterized by pain and stiffness in and around one or more joints. The symptoms can develop gradually or suddenly. Certain rheumatic conditions can also involve the immune system and various internal organs of the body. Physical therapy is an important part of the ongoing treatment for arthritis. Physical therapy strengthens, stretches and stabilizes muscles surrounding affected joints providing needed support. Relieving Joint Pain Exercising is important to help reduce joint pain and stiffness. Light to moderate-intensity physical activity can actually prevent a decline in function, even restoring health. However, some people with arthritis may be reluctant to exercise because of joint pain after activity. You can take various steps to relieve pain, such as heat and cold therapy, or pain relievers, making it easier for you to exercise and stay active. In addition to physical therapy, choose non-impact exercises such as bicycling, swimming or water exercise. Furthermore, research shows that even modest 3 8 1 6 3 4 7 5 3 5 9 7 9 7 5 8

“Motivation After a Total Knee Replacement!”

“Walking On My Own Again!”

“I came into Avenues Therapy Clinic with a fractured leg. I was walking with a walker and not able to do much more than that. I couldn’t bend my knee or do stairs at all. My goal was to be able to walk on my own again. In the past months I have strengthened my leg, my knee is bending, and I am able to tackle the stairs! The walker has also disappeared and was replaced by a cane, and sometimes I don’t even need the cane. My goal was to be able to walk on my own; I do believe we have achieved my goal.” - Freeda H.

“After a 2 year wait, I had a total knee replacement done. Not really knowing what to expect after the procedure I was surprised at how limited my range of motion was. I could barely get in and out of a car, I had to have help putting on and taking off socks. The surgeon that did the procedure was adamant that I get a stationary bike to help with the recovery. Unfortunately, because of the bike I had, I was unable to get the seat high enough to use the first few weeks. I started looking forward to going to physical therapy so I could use the bike. Working with Eric and the rest of the staff gave me the confidence and will to push myself towards recovery. While physical therapy isn’t always pleasant and can cause discomfort and pain, Eric and the staff kept me motivated.Thank you Eric for your patience and expertise, if I need physical therapy in the future you will be my first choice!” - Bill T.

“I’m feeling 100% better!”

“My primary care physician referred me to physical therapy when I went to him for sciatic discomfort going down my left leg, all the way to my ankle and foot. I walk a lot for my job, 18,000 to 20,000 steps per shift. When I was walking, all felt comfortable, some minor discomfort during this activity, but really pretty good. When I stopped and relaxed for a period of time the ache and sometimes pain would set in, to the point that I couldn’t sit and relax, or even get a good night’s rest. After my first visit to AvenuesTherapy Clinic working with Walynn, I started feeling better, able to sit and rest without pain and discomfort setting in. Walynn worked with me on pelvic core strengthening exercises, which on the surface don’t seem all that hard to do, but I soon learned if done correctly they are strenuous but extremely beneficial in helping me with my problem. In addition to the strengthening exercises, Walynn was able to help me by placing me on a bench that performs traction on my spine. Each session on this machine lasted about 20 minutes, this was also very beneficial to my overall recovery. After 5 weeks of therapy, I’m feeling 100% better! I’m able to sleep comfortably, without rolling over during the night, awakening with that, “I wished I hadn’t just done that” feeling. I’m not hopping up out of my chair after just a few minutes having to stretch out my legs and back, to relieve the discomfort anymore.Thank you to Walynn, Linda and the entire staff at AvenuesTherapy Clinic for helping get me through this issue.” - Dwight H.

Knee replacement, also called arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis. Metal and plastic parts are used to cap the ends of the bones that form the knee joint, along with the kneecap. The great news is…90% of patients who undergo Total Knee Replacement experience dramatic pain relief…which allows patients to get back to enjoying the simple things of daily life again! But what can go wrong?

This condition can occur after surgery on the knee, such as a knee replacement. Over time, scar tissue builds up inside the knee, causing the knee joint to shrink and tighten. Scar tissue from stiff knee syndrome can severely impact your knee’s range of motion. In the most severe instances, it can result in a permanent inability to bend and straighten the knee. Some knee stiffness following a total knee replacement is normal. Severe stiffness is not. Stiff Knee Syndrome (in medical lingo, Arthrofibrosis)

So how do you know if you have stiff knee syndrome? • You walk with a bent knee • There is increased amount of pain which could be the result of stiff knee syndrome, especially when it occurs along with reduced flexibility. • There is swelling in the soft tissue around your knee. This is different than swelling due to fluid buildup.
