THE VILLA KATHRINE is a Mediterranean castle overlooking the Mississippi, com- plete with an interior courtyard and reflecting pool. DAY 2 [cont.]: Next, we paid a visit to Quincy Axe Company . Channeling our inner lumberjacks/ninjas, we tried our hand at axe and knife throwing. There was also giant beer pong, jenga, corn hole, and darts. This stop was definitely a highlight for the both of us! For dinner, we wanted to try a local favorite— Tiramisu , renowned for its authentic Italian cuisine and inviting ambiance. The Parmesan Risotto and Four-Cheese Pizza were *chef’s kiss*.

DAY 3: Hidden gems in the nearby towns of Nauvoo & Warsaw, IL. First up, Warsaw Brewery , home of the colossal Bloody Mary Tower. After lunch we walked the grounds of the historic brewery, perched on the Mississippi bluffs along the Great River Road. Next, we journeyed to the Joseph Smith Historic Site in Nauvoo, a place of great historical significance for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Much bigger than I expected: there are historic homes, shops, plus the beautifully restored Nauvoo Temple. We decided to book an off-grid stay in Nauvoo, too. Enter: Ten Acres Treehouses , a whimsical treehouse village. We stayed at “Captain’s Quarters,” a secluded 400-square-foot treehouse in the middle of the forest. Surrounded by nature, we were greeted by two sweet black labs, Paris and London, who showed us to our home for the night. A truly unique experience–you’ll even get to shower on the porch under the trees! To conclude our Quincy area adventure, we toasted our unforgettable trip at Press House Winery . We learned of the family’s 100-year wine- making history while we sipped on about 17 different kinds of wine. Afterward, Eric and I took a lovely little stroll out in the vineyards.
DAY 1: Eric and I kicked off our Quincy experience by checking into the Mansion on Maine —a statuesque historic home rental built in 1910. To explore the city’s architecture, we hopped on a pair of bikes—free at the Villa Kathrine , a breathtaking Moroccan-style castle with sweeping Mississippi River views and arguably Quincy’s crown jewel. For dinner, we indulged at The Maine Course in downtown Quincy. Chef Kevin Minnick served coconut curried cauliflower, filet of beef and blue - berry cheesecake–easily claiming a spot in our top five all-time favorite meals. As an added treat, Chef Minnick shared a selection of tastings from his collection of over 500 whiskeys.
The Midwest never ceases to amaze me with its hidden treasures, and Quincy is a perfect example of that. I have a hunch more adventurers like me will soon come to appreciate the awe-inspiring beauty this city has to offer. -Mariah lifewithmariah.com
