Saturate in Summer

Salute! Downtown Quincy is home to a culinary smorgasbord of dining options. From American steakhouses & tangy barbeque joints, Korean fusion and farm-sourced fare, to bars with burgers & cheese- focused beer pubs. Tiramisu Ristorante Italiano, a beloved favorite of locals and visitors alike, has been a downtown cornerstone for over two decades. Open for lunch and dinner, with an extensive wine list to accompany. Try an individual Pizza Margherita for lunch or Ravioli Salsa Rosa with the famous house “pink” sauce for dinner. Owners, Ilija & Suzana Cucuk, above left, invite you to explore a little piece of Italy right in the center of the Midwest. Tiramisu is a participating venue of Summer Flavor Tours (p. 4), offering the dessert course of dreamy housemade tiramisu.

Slip on your favorite sunglasses and grab a friend or glide solo-- just remember to bring your appetite. The beckoning flavors of summer converge each June to August in downtown Quincy. Think: carefree Saturdays, warm breezes, brunch, cool cocktails and sweet endings, all created for you. Summer Flavor Tours stroll through historic streets hugging Washington Park, guided by friendly food hosts. Chefs share signature food & drink menus, representing six locally owned venues from an artisan coffee roaster to a swanky retro lounge. You’ll see incredible architecture along the way and meander through the Farmers Market and a local boutique shop. Flavor Tours conclude at the city’s only craft brewery, Quincy Brewing Company, where the owners’ passion for craft beer and historic downtown is evident the minute you walk in the door. QBCo offers exceptional ales, lagers and seltzers in an inviting, renovated space. Relax with one of 18 beers on tap in The Tasting Room or al fresco in The Garden. QBCo hosts Makers Markets, food truck events, trivia, bingo and other community festivities.

Summer’s freshest picks, organic berry & flower gardens, sunflower mazes, homemade treats, and FALL in the Midwest. Quincy is the nucleus of a region populated by family farms and wineries. Area small farmers are dedicated to growing fruits and vegetables sustainably and love sharing their harvests. Dotting the rural landscape you’ll discover co-op farm stands & markets, pumpkin patches, and family-friendly events. A new venture that’s quickly blossomed into a local favorite is The Farm Stand Kitchen. What began as a hobby farm has evolved into a day-trip destination with a cozy café, organic blueberry garden (translates to housemade blueberry waffles!), and retail shop. Breakfast & lunch are created from scratch, using the produce grown onsite, with menu items like Cheesy Egg Toast-- signature egg salad with fresh herbs, piled high on country white bread and topped with cheddar cheese, broiled to perfection. More seasonal favorites : Edgewood Orchards frozen apple cider slushies, pick-your-own flower bouquets at Terripin Farms, Mill Creek Farm hayrides, and bonfires at Autumn Moon Family Farm.

Circa 1890, THE QUINCY MUSEUM is a 20,000-sq-ft mansion set in the heart of Maine Street. The home was built for Richard Newcomb, one of Quincy’s four millionaires in 1904. Today, visitors are treated to tours of the first floor, restored in high style Victorian. The second & third floors feature rotating exhibits, and special events are held throughout the year.

Mural Find & Dine ART HITS THE WALL

Home of America’s first arts council, Arts Quincy, the city has been named one of the “Most Artistic Towns” in the U.S. by Expedia, twice . Arts Quincy’s 55 partner organizations offer year-round creative outlets and enjoyment of the fine arts from Great River Eagle Days to the Civil War Symposium, Blues in the District to ArtFest. The city boasts a top-notch symphony and community theatre.

To celebrate art in a big way, we’ve gathered a set of 24 of murals + nearby eats

The 10-mile route showcases broad sections of the city, winding through the riverfront & downtown, the North End & German Historic District, the Illinois Veterans’ Home and past the Monckton Mansion.

Some of the works are “ghost” murals, weathered by the elements and years, still offering intriguing glimpses of the businesses and families they once represented. Others are newer pieces borne of community revitalization initiatives, enlivening the outdoor atmosphere of public spaces. [LIFE WITH MARIAH cont.]

DAY 2

LIFE WITH MARIAH 72 hours in Quincy

DAY 2 [cont.]: Next, we paid a visit to Quincy Axe Company . Channeling our inner lumberjacks/ninjas, we tried our hand at axe and knife throwing. There was also giant beer pong, jenga, corn hole, and darts. This stop was definitely a highlight for the both of us! For dinner, we wanted to try a local favorite— Tiramisu , renowned for its authentic Italian cuisine and inviting ambiance. The Parmesan Risotto and Four-Cheese Pizza were *chef’s kiss*.

Travel with Mariah Haberman! A lifestyle influencer and digital creator based in Kansas City, Mariah covers solo travel ideas on Life with Mariah . She’s been featured in HuffPost and selected to In Business Magazine’s list of 40 Under 40. When she’s not musing about travel and style, Mariah is likely exploring the Kansas City area with her husband, Eric. Enjoy the couple’s summer adventure to Quincy, and see the full article on lifewithmmaria.com + follow on Instagram @mariahhaberman. “Here’s the spoiler: Quincy stole our hearts– unequivocally!–with its historic charm and natural beauty. From the moment we rolled into town, we were captivated by the architecture, which is what I think most defines Quincy’s character.” DAY 2: Historic Washington Park . The Mid- summer Arts Faire and Farmer’s Market welcomed us with local art, live perfor- mances, and farm-fresh produce. Next up: Guided Summer Flavor Tours! (highly recommend). Three delightful hours hopping between culinary gems, including: Electric Fountain Brewing Coffee : The Electric Larry. Krazy Cakes Cafe : Any of the desserts. Literally any . The Patio Restaurant & Lounge : An Old-Fashioned (peep the Gucci wallpaper). Quincy Brewing Company : Black Cherry Mango.

DAY 1

DAY 3: Hidden gems in the nearby towns of Nauvoo & Warsaw, IL. First up, Warsaw Brewery , home of the colossal Bloody Mary Tower. After lunch we walked the grounds of the historic brewery, perched on the Mississippi bluffs along the Great River Road. Next, we journeyed to the Joseph Smith Historic Site in Nauvoo, a place of great historical significance for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Much bigger than I expected: there are historic homes, shops, plus the beautifully restored Nauvoo Temple. We decided to book an off-grid stay in Nauvoo, too. Enter: Ten Acres Treehouses , a whimsical treehouse village. We stayed at “Captain’s Quarters,” a secluded 400-square-foot treehouse in the middle of the forest. Surrounded by nature, we were greeted by two sweet black labs, Paris and London, who showed us to our home for the night. A truly unique experience–you’ll even get to shower on the porch under the trees! To conclude our Quincy area adventure, we toasted our unforgettable trip at Press House Winery . We learned of the family’s 100-year wine- making history while we sipped on about 17 different kinds of wine. Afterward, Eric and I took a lovely little stroll out in the vineyards.

DAY 1: Eric and I kicked off our Quincy experience by checking into the Mansion on Maine —a statuesque historic home rental built in 1910. To explore the city’s architecture, we hopped on a pair of bikes—free at the Villa Kathrine , a breathtaking Moroccan-style castle with sweeping Mississippi River views and arguably Quincy’s crown jewel. For dinner, we indulged at The Maine Course in downtown Quincy. Chef Kevin Minnick served coconut curried cauliflower, filet of beef and blue - berry cheesecake–easily claiming a spot in our top five all-time favorite meals. As an added treat, Chef Minnick shared a selection of tastings from his collection of over 500 whiskeys.

The Midwest never ceases to amaze me with its hidden treasures, and Quincy is a perfect example of that. I have a hunch more adventurers like me will soon come to appreciate the awe-inspiring beauty this city has to offer. -Mariah lifewithmariah.com
