My name is Dr. Katie Myron, and I’m thrilled to join the team as the newest dentist at Exceptional Smiles. I took on this role at the end of March, and I’ve already had a wonderful time getting to know Dr. Schermer, Dr. Andrea, the rest of the staff, and all my new patients. I’m also excited to learn that my new practice has a newsletter where I can introduce myself! If you knew me as a kid, you probably wouldn’t be surprised that I became a dentist. I loved brushing my teeth when I was young, and my brother and I would have contests to see who could create the most foam in their mouths. I also enjoyed everything about going to the dentist — unusual, I know! I thought my dentist was funny, and I liked having my teeth polished and getting a toy from the prize box. Believe it or not, I even loved having braces! In addition to that early passion, I’ve been equally interested in art and science: Dentistry is the perfect combination of the two. My work involves practicing medicine and using evidence-based solutions, but I also get to make patients’ visions of their smiles a reality through aesthetic work. I’m a big perfectionist, and dentistry gives me somewhere to channel that energy. My work allows me to calm down and not worry so much about every tiny detail at home. My husband, Jake, and I had our first child in October. After five months, he declared I had to return to work because he was tired of watching me clean the counter 60 times a day! Jake and I met at Miami University. While I’m originally from Columbus, he’s from Kansas City. We lived in Chicago for a few years, but when we found out I was pregnant, we decided to move back to family and friends in Ohio. I don’t regret my time in Chicago, but I am thrilled to be back! Our baby, Abigail, is the light of my life. She’s a very happy, chunky-cheeked baby who always laughs and smiles. I can already tell she’s starting to recognize her name because she lights up when I say it. Abigail loves going for walks, and we’ve logged many miles on her stroller. Fortunately, I love working out; I’m a runner and a big fan of OrangeTheory. I’M EXCITED TO JOIN AN EXCEPTIONAL TEAM A Lifelong Dream

Naturally, I could talk about Abigail for ages, so I’ll share just a few more details. She loves when I read to her, and her favorite thing is probably her pacifier. I’m convinced her first word is going to be “mama.” And she never goes anywhere without a bow in her hair. I keep waiting for her to turn blond like me, but she’s the spitting image of Jake instead! The small, local nature of Exceptional Smiles suits me because it allows me to build relationships with my patients. I couldn’t be happier to work in such a beautiful office with other dentists so committed to their work. And I look forward to getting to know and working with all my new patients at Exceptional Smiles. There’s nothing I love more than helping people achieve the smile of their dreams. -Dr. Katie Myron

WHY SUMMER IS ALWAYS SPECIAL A Family Reunion

Summer is coming, so my wife and I will get to enjoy more time with our kids. Our oldest is coming home from college, and our middle daughter is graduating from high school. It’s incredible how fast our kids have grown, and all three have their own things going on. Now I think I understand how my parents must feel! My brothers, parents, and I have spent 30 years living in various regions across the country from one another. Fortunately, technology allows us to be almost together through Skype and Zoom. It’s not quite the same as being in the same room, but it beats a phone call or letter — both of which beat nothing at all. Still, the empty nest days are sneaking up on us way too quickly. So, it’s wonderful when we can all be in one place. But with so much going on, we must be careful not to lose sight of Mother’s Day. My wife has yet to announce her wishes for the day, but I know she’s getting the No. 1 thing she wants — everyone home together! Honestly, that’s my top wish for Father’s Day, too. I want a nice peaceful day where everyone is gathered and getting along. And having some homemade waffles is always a nice treat, too.

My family is never far from my mind, including at work. The playlist at Exceptional Smiles is a mishmash of all my family’s favorite musical genres. My wife is really into ‘70s music, so when some ABBA or Janis Joplin comes on, I think of her. And when the girls pop into the office and hear an ‘80s song, they know that’s Dad’s music. When T-Swift is dominating the day’s playlist, I know the girls have gotten into the Spotify account. It’s nice to have little reminders of everyone throughout the day. Family is at the heart of everything we do. Everyone at Exceptional Smiles is in the business of caring for your families, and we have gotten to know each other over the years. My longtime patients regularly ask about everyone at home, and I’m always catching up with the latest on their families. It’s one of the things that makes this job so special.

I hope your family is doing well too, and I look forward to hearing all about it during your next visit.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING “Jason, Lauren, and the staff are the very best. If you are at all uncomfortable visiting the dentist or have that common fear of dental work, this is the practice for you. Their No. 1 concern is your comfort, and the quality of care is top-notch. Give them a try and you will actually enjoy going to the dentist.” — “Dr. Andrea is phenomenal! She is kind and professional as well as extremely technically skilled. I was so impressed with the dental work I received — the modern technology of the office, the pleasant and skilled dental technicians (Jamie and Erica were both great), and the quality of the work. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience, and I am so happy I found this practice!” — “The service here, both customer and professional, is exceptional. Every single person is on their game. This business is a blueprint on how to deliver top-flight dental service. I wish I had known about them 20 years ago!”

GO BEYOND APPLES HOW TO CELEBRATE TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY

We all know teachers impact children’s lives daily, but Dr. Schermer probably understands it better than most. He grew up in a teaching family. His parents were teachers, grandparents on both sides of his family also taught, and his wife teaches today. But he notes that his wife’s teaching environment differs significantly from previous generations. Teachers need our support now more than ever. But while teachers are always grateful for families’ efforts, they probably have enough apples, candles, and personal care products. Many teachers say the best gift they can receive is a message about their impact on students. Even though National Teacher Appreciation Day was on May 2, you and your child can still show their teachers you care, no matter what day it is.

made a difference in your life as a parent, don’t be afraid to share that in your own letter, either.

GET CREATIVE. Artists of all ages can show their teachers they care with one-of-a-kind work. A teacher can proudly display a painting, drawing, or piece of macaroni art as a permanent reminder that they make a difference in their students’ lives. If your kid prefers to express themselves with a paintbrush or a bottle of glue instead of a pen, this unique option is one their teacher won’t soon forget. RECORD YOUR APPRECIATION. These days, most people carry a camera in their pocket, but that doesn’t make a personalized video any less meaningful. Children who

enjoy creating and editing videos can let their imaginations run wild to make a tribute that will knock their teacher’s socks off. But the less technologically inclined can also record

WRITE A LETTER. Whether your child is learning to write

or working on their college essays, countless teachers report loving a personalized letter of appreciation. Many even save them and read them for inspiration on bad days. Your student can share what they’ve learned from their teacher or recount special moments from class. And if a teacher has

a simple clip of a student sharing why they love their teacher. You can even turn this into a community project by enlisting other parents and students to contribute their recordings. The result will be a tear-jerking memento a teacher can always cherish.

Healthy Fats Exist Too

FAT IS NOT EVIL

To trim down, eliminate unhealthy saturated and trans fats from your diet instead. Trans fats are those that are partially hydrogenated and are common in processed foods. They reduce inflammation. Omega-3s, a polyunsaturated fat, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help your body heal faster. No matter how much exercise you do, combating inflammation with your diet is beneficial. Omega-3s can even be taken as fish oil supplements if you can’t work it into your diet. However, just be careful not to consume too much, as omega-3s can become fattening when consumed in excess. IT CAN BE HEALTHY!

Everyone wants to be fit and trim, and many avoid all fats because of this. However, healthy fats are vital for aging bodies. Fat keeps your brain functioning optimally, provides energy, and helps your body absorb minerals and vitamins to maintain your health. When making dietary choices, it’s important to remember that healthy fats are your friend and, when consumed in the recommended amounts, will not lead to weight complications. WHAT ARE HEALTHY FATS? Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats help our bodies feel full and work to slow down the digestion of carbohydrates. These fats improve blood glucose and insulin levels, lower LDL cholesterol, and keep our heart healthy. Also, eating healthy fats is easy — they’re in tuna, salmon, flaxseed, chia seeds, eggs, avocados, nuts, olive oil, yogurt, and tofu.

2.

3. They boost brain function. Healthy fats play an essential role in our brain function and development. Your brain is roughly 60% fat, and it’s important to note that your brain cells rely on a steady supply of good fats to operate correctly.

WHY ARE HEALTHY FATS VITAL AS WE AGE?

1. They aren’t fattening fats. When you think of fats, your mind likely immediately turns to weight gain. However,

4.

They provide energy. Healthy fats combat fatigue and provide your

body with energy. When we consume omega-3s, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats, our body absorbs them and converts each calorie into energy for our cells to function.

monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats,

when consumed in proper amounts, help with fat loss and maintaining a healthy weight.

So, remember when you’re planning your meals for the

week: Good fats keep you healthy!
