SECRETARY’S MESSAGE By Mr. Raighne "Renny" C. Delaney

The Army Navy Country Club Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, 7 October 2019 at the Arlington Clubhouse. At the meeting, we will elect Resident Members to the Board of Governors to serve for the period October 2019 to October 2022. Our By-Laws provide that only Resident Members may stand for election to the Board. At this year’s Annual Meeting, we are presently scheduled to elect 16 Governors. We will elect 9 Governors from those Resident Members who are on Active Duty or Selected Reserve Resident status. We will elect 7 Governors from those Resident Members who are in the All Others status. We will ensure that nomination forms are available in the Administration Office and on the Club's website no later than Thursday, 27 June 2019. To ensure the publication of the nomination in the Annual Meeting Packet, we must receive the nomination no later than Thursday, 1 August 2019. We will permit nominations from the floor at the Annual Meeting, but please advise me of any such notifications prior to the meeting so I can ensure the floor nomination is of a qualified Resident Member. The use of military rank for nomination and election purposes is permissible under Title 10 of the US Code. For example, an Active Duty army officer may identify herself in the form of “CPT Jane Doe, USA,” and a retired army officer may identify herself as “CPT Jane Doe, USA (Ret.). Former military officers may not use their former rank as a preface, but may use their highest wartime rank as follows: Ms. Jane Doe (CPT, USA). I strongly encourage those who are interested in serving on the Board of Governors to familiarize themselves with our By- Laws, Club Rules, and Organization Manual. I am available to answer any questions you might have about this process at rdelaney@beankinney.com or by phone: (703) 525-4000 or home (703) 838-0390.

GOLF

A penalty score can be posted to a player’s scoring record by the Handicap Committee for one or more of the following reasons: • Failure to post a tournament round within seven (7) days of the tournament or no later than the 14th or the last day of the month. Multiple failures to post a score as a tournament may result in 30-day tournament participation suspension • Failure to post a non-tournament round by the 14th or last day of the month • Failure to adjust a score for Equitable Stroke Control • Posting a score higher or lower than recorded on the scorecard

PENALTIES FOR improperly POSTED SCORES

A penalty score is a score posted by the Handicap Committee that is equal to the lowest or highest handicap differential in the player’s current scoring record. If a golfer receives three (3) penalty scores, he/she may have their handicap withdrawn for 60 days. This will prevent participation in ANY event which requires a validated handicap.

Adopt-a-Hole Program 2 0 1 9

Following a very successful program for the past three years, the Adopt-a-Hole Subcommittee is looking for some fellow golfers (and golf groups) to join us this year in helping to keep our ANCC courses in great condition, despite the 80,000+ rounds per year that we play on them. This is a huge amount of play, and when you play golf, you create divots and ball marks – it’s part of the game. It’s our responsibility as golfers to fix our divots and ball marks – and that is part of the etiquette of the game. Please help us. The Golf & Green Committee sponsors the program, which asks volunteers to pay particular attention to repairing ball marks on the greens and divots on the fairways. The groups, couples, and individuals who adopt a hole usually simply pay extra attention to their hole during the play of their normal rounds, encouraging other playing partners to help. It does not take long to sweep a green for ball marks or fill a handful of extra divots as you play. We don’t expect perfection each time, but want to get everyone working towards making the course better. If a member felt his/her hole needs extra attention, he/she would be free to arrange to work on it when his/her activities would not disrupt the pace of play. Last year, we had over 100 volunteers that adopted holes, and the effect on our courses was noticeable. Your course needs you. Please help us protect our investment and

The purpose of the USGA Handicap System is to make the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling golfers of different abilities to compete on an equitable basis. The system provides fair Course Handicaps for players regardless of ability, and adjusts a player’s Handicap Index up or down as one’s game changes. At the same time, it disregards high scores that bear little relation to the player’s potential ability and promotes continuity by making handicaps continuous from one playing season or year to the next. A basic premise underlies the USGA Handicap System, namely that every player will try to make the best score at each hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every acceptable round for peer review. Posting scores in person immediately following the round at the course where the round is played is the preferred way to expose scores to peer review. This method of posting shall be used whenever possible. Scores can also be posted via the Internet at www.vsga.org (at the middle of the Home Page) or at www.ghin.com (see “Post Score” at top of page). There is also a GHIN app available for your smart phone. Scores can be posted year round, weather permitting. Temporary ratings are established during the winter months at each course. A USGA Handicap Index compares a player’s scoring ability to the scoring ability of an expert amateur on a course of standard difficulty. A player posts scores along with the appropriate USGA Ratings to make up the scoring record. A Handicap Index is computed from no more than 20 scores plus eligible Tournament Scores in the scoring record. It reflects the player’s potential because it is based upon the best scores posted for a given number of rounds, ideally the best 10 of the last 20 rounds. A USGA Handicap Index travels well from course to course, as well as from one set of tees to another set of tees on the same course. A player’s Handicap Index determines the number of strokes a player receives depending upon the length and difficulty of the course being played.

New "Golfers' Posture" Seminar

Sunday, 9 June at 1:00 & 2:30 PM | GX Studio $20 per person

Poor posture can be a big problem for a golfer. Rounded shoulders and a forward head position limit the ability to efficiently rotate through the thoracic spine (upper back) which hampers the ability to achieve a good backswing and follow through. This class will provide a framework for a corrective exercise program to improve flexibility of the thoracic spine. Denny Pinch, certified personal trainer, corrective exercise specialist, and golf fitness specialist, will instruct. ANCC Foundation Did you Know?

Over the past year the United States Golf Association (USGA) Museum has provided the ANCC Foundation with several scorecards, three of which are quite significant because they represent early course configurations. Two of the scorecards, dated November 9, 1939 and May 16, 1946 are for the Arlington course. The third, dated May 11, 1953, is for Fairfax Country Club, the course that ANCC purchased in 1958 to become ANCC Fairfax. Each of these scorecards are neatly dated/scored for a player identified as “J.B.R.”. To find out who JBR was and how these scorecards came into the hands of the USGA, click here.
