To all potential buyers and visitors,
We are pleased to invite you to the Show-Me-Select (SMS) Replacement Heifer Program Spring Southwest Missouri Sale, to be held at Joplin Regional Stockyards, 10131 Cimarron Road, Carthage, MO 64836, on May 15, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. This event marks the 56 th SW MO sale and will feature an offering of 170 fall-calving bred heifers from 12 consignors in the region. This sale offers purebred and crossbred heifers from breeds like Angus, Akaushi, Beefmaster, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Red Angus, Simmental, and composites. Most have completed an estrous synchronization program followed by artificial insemination (AI) to service sires with high-accuracy expected progeny difference (EPD) numbers, then were exposed to natural service (NS) sires with genomic-enhanced EPDs. More information on heifers and sires is included in the catalog. The SMS heifer program is a nationally recognized educational program designed to educate producers with the goal of developing and marketing productive females that are expected to calve easily, and remain in the herd long-term. All heifers have satisfied minimum standards for reproductive soundness, pelvic size, body condition, weight, and are blemish free. They are bred to bulls that meet stringent calving ease EPD specifications. Additionally, a comprehensive health protocol has been implemented, including confirming heifers test negative for BVD-PI. Heifers are expected to calve between late August and November 30 th , and all have been pregnancy checked within 30 days of the sale. Throughout their development, and prior to sale, heifers have undergone several evaluations to ensure the best quality heifers are available for purchase. The guarantee is an agreement between the buyer and the consigner; if any issues occur, the consignor must be contacted prior to any action taken using the information provided in the catalog. The consignor guarantees bred heifers to be safe in calf at the time of sale. If a heifer is proven by veterinary exam within 30 days after sale not to have been pregnant, the consignor will replace the heifer or make a financial settlement with the buyer. Joplin Regional Stockyards is the sale agent. The catalog lists the sale order, which was set by a drawing among consignors. Each consignor decides which heifers to sell during each rotation. If you're new to buying at Joplin Regional Stockyards, we are happy to welcome you to our sale. Please remember that new buyers need to bring a preapproval letter from their bank when registering before the sale. You can watch a video preview of the heifers at www.joplinstockyards.com. Online bidding and viewing will be available through DVAuction. To bid online, select "Live Auction" and create a new DVAuction account; make sure your account and bank approval are arranged at least four days prior to the sale. For questions or assistance with bank approval, contact Dustin, Misti, or Clay at Joplin Regional Stockyards at (417) 548-2333.

GENERAL SALE INFORMATION Sale Agent - Joplin Regional Stockyards (JRS)
NOTICE: New JRS buyers please bring a letter of preapproval from your bank when registering prior to the sale.
SALE PROCEDURE Sale order is set by consignors drawing for their spot in the rotation, with each choosing heifers to sell per rotation. Heifers are sold in uniform lots—usually 3 to 6—sorted by breed, color, and size, and expected to calve within 45 days. Once sold, heifers become the buyer’s property and risk immediately. The consignor assists loading upon the buyer’s instructions, but at the buyer's risk; loading only happens after the sale concludes. Financial transactions are handled by the sale agent and completed before loading. Health papers for all heifers will be available after the sale if needed. All heifers have been tested and found negative for BVD-PI. ONLINE AUCTION BIDDING Watch video preview and sale at www.joplinstockyards.com. Arrange online bidding in advance, along with bank approval ahead of time. To set up your account, visit www.joplinstockyards.com, click on Live Auction, choose "Create New DVAuction account," and finish your registration. Afterward, call JRS at least four days before the sale to complete the banking approval process. For questions or help with bank approval, contact JRS at (417) 548-2333 and ask for Dustin, Misti, or Clay. GUARANTEE All heifers are guaranteed bred and to remain pregnant for 30 days from the sale date. Calving dates provided are estimates; actual calving may occur within a two-week window on either side of the projected date, even when females have been artificially inseminated at the same time. The consignor guarantees bred heifers to be safe in calf at the time of sale. If a heifer is proven by veterinary exam within 30 days after sale not to have been pregnant, the consignor will replace the heifer or make a financial settlement with the buyer. If any issues occur, the consignor must be contacted prior to any action taken. The guarantee is an agreement between the buyer and the consigner and not the University of Missouri Extension or other organizations or individuals involved in the sale. In case the buyer and seller are unable to reach an agreement over a heifer, an arbitration committee may be asked to hear both sides and render a decision. Calves of Show-Me-Select heifers are warranted to be free of genetic defects for a period of six (6) months from date of purchase. Heifers that give birth to an affected calf (exhibits the genetic defect), which is subsequently proven by diagnostic lab or DNA testing to be a genetic defect will have the full purchase price of the heifer plus the DNA testing charge refunded to the buyer by the seller. TAGS All heifers in the sale are identified by a special yellow tag displaying the Show-Me-Select (SMS) trademark and name, indicating they have fulfilled all requirements of the Missouri SMS Replacement Heifer Program. Some heifers have a white SMS tag, marking them as Tier Two heifers; see the requirements section in this catalog for full details. The Show-Me-Plus Heifer designation applies to heifers that have been tested with a genomic prediction panel approved by MU Extension. Currently, no special tags are used for these heifers.
CONTRIBUTORS The sale committee and consignors want to thank all those who have contributed to the success of this program. Your faith in our ability to make this program work is appreciated.

Show-Me-Plus Classification:
This logo shows the farm is Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Certified. BQA offers U.S. beef producers guidance on best practices in cattle management, focusing on husbandry, handling, facilities, transport, record keeping, and herd health. With BQA certification, farms demonstrate commitment to food safety, animal welfare, and beef quality. While MO Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program producers are encouraged to be BQA certified, it is not required.
Heifers tested with a heifer genomic prediction panel approved by University of Missouri Extension will be given the designation of a Show-Me-Plus Heifer. These include breed association GE-EPD, GeneMax Advantage, Igenity Beef, Inherit Select, and Method Choice tests. Heifer DNA samples must be submitted and paid for two months prior to sale date. Genomic panel results must be sent to Regional Coordinator and State Beef Geneticist prior to tagging.
Using Catalog EPD information Expected Progeny Difference (EPD): Provides the best means for comparing animals' genetic merit within a breed. It combines individual performance data with that from progeny and other relatives, using national sire evaluation information to factor in related traits and herd mate differences. EPD’s predict how offspring will perform relative to the breed average; it shows whether progeny are expected to do better or worse than those of average parents but does not indicate “good” or “bad” performance. Breeders should assess which traits matter most to their program and use EPDs accordingly. EPD definitions will be discussed by breed of bulls represented to help in understanding catalog information Angus (for more info go to https://www.angus.org/tools-resources/national-cattle-evaluation/epd-value-definitions) Calving Ease Direct (CED): is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire's daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk): is a predictor of a sire's genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf's weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Functional Longevity EPD (FL): expressed in number of calves, is a predictor of the number of calves a sire's daughters are predicted to produce by 6 years of age compared to that of other sires' daughters. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction indicating more calves produced on average. Mature Weight EPD (MW): expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires. Marbling EPD (MARB): expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE): expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M): an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. Beef Value ($B): a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. Combined Value ($C): an index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.
Using Catalog EPD information (continued) Gelbvieh/Balancer (https://gelbvieh.org/genetic-technology/epd-info/epd-definitions)
Calving Ease Direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers. Stayability (STAY): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Mature Weight (MWT): Body weight of cows adjusted to six years of age at body condition score 5. MWT is reported in pounds and is computed from a genetic model that leverages information from weaning weight, post-weaning gain, and mature weights of cows. Reported weights are adjusted for both age at observation and for body condition. Ribeye Area (CREA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MARB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Maternal Profit Index (MPI): In this production scenario, Gelbvieh bulls are mated to Angus-based cows with surplus calves marketed at weaning, with replacement heifers retained from the calf crop. Feeder Profit Index (FPI ): Envisioned as a completely terminal index, FPI assumes all calves are marketed as finished beef carcasses priced on a value-based grid. Total Profit Index (TPI): Combining replacement female retention from the herd with carcass endpoint for marketed surplus heifers and all steers, TPI balances both maternal and terminal selection criteria. Hereford (https://hereford.org/genetics/breed-improvement/trait-definitions/) Calving Ease Direct (CE): is based on calving ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age. Weaning Weight (WW): estimate of pre-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. Maternal Milk (MM): of a sire’s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires’ daughters’ progeny due to milking ability. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): predicts how easily a sire’s daughters will calve at two years of age and is measured on a percentage. Mature Cow Weight (MCW): designed to help breeders select sires that will either increase or decrease mature size of cows in the herd. Ribeye Area (REA): reflects differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Marbling (MARB): reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$): is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Hereford x Angus cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards Certified Hereford Beef. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$): is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls are mated to mature commercial Angus cows where all progeny will be targeted for Certified Hereford Beef after the finishing phase. Red Angus (https://redangus.org/genetics/ranchers-guide-to-epds/) Calving Ease Direct (CED): predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. Weaning Weight (WW): predicts differences in 205-day weaning weight. Milk (MILK): predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. Stayability (STAY): predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd-calve every year-through 6 years of age. Marbling (MARB): predicts differences in marbling score – amount of intramuscular fat measured at the 13th rib. Ribeye Area (REA): predicts differences in square inches of ribeye area measured at the 13th rib.
Using Catalog EPD information (continued) Red Angus (https://redangus.org/genetics/ranchers-guide-to-epds/) (continued) Profitability and Sustainability (ProS): is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. HerdBuilder (HB): is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. GridMaster (GM): is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the postweaning phase of production.
