Kendall Breaks Ground On Facility Expansion reported by Greg Kishbaugh A t the beginning of September, Kendall Packaging an- nounced it would dramatically expand its Pittsburg, Kansas, facility. The company, with headquarters in Mequon, Wisconsin, officially broke ground at a ceremony on Septem- ber 21 at the Kansas site, which will see a $10 million, 59,000- square-foot expansion that will double its size.

Flexible Packaging Continues To Grow The global market for f lexible packaging is expected to be valued at $238.5 billion by the end of 2016 and $358.7 billion by the end of 2024, with a projected CAGR of 5.2 percent from 2016 to 2024 in rev- enue, according to a new report fromTransparency Market Research. Leading The Way Stand-up pouches are expected to remain the leading product type manufactured in flexible packaging. By the end of 2024, stand-up pouch products are expected to generate a revenue of $85.9 billion. Its leading demand is attributed to the ease of storage of stand-up pouches, superi- or extension of shelf life for fluid contents, and above average abilities of taking on flexographic print. “Over the past few years, a large number of new products that were launched came in flexible packag- ing. In developed economies, more than 70 percent of the commercially available fresh fruits and vegetables are now stored in flexible packag- ing,” stated a TMR analyst. For exclusive content and breaking news please visit www.flexomarketnews.com

The expansion will make room for a new a 10-color flexo- graphic printing press, a solventless laminator, a slitter and other ancillary equipment, with $6 million allocated to the new equipment. The expansion will also have 1,400 square feet allocated for a new on-site wellness center. “This is our second major expansion in three years,” said Eric Erickson III, Kendall Packaging President and CEO. “Between the Pittsburg plant and our facility in Jefferson,Wisconsin, we have invested approximately $17 million in improvements.” (Cont’d on Page 12) Members of Kendall Packaging, including Pittsburg Plant Manager Jack Trostle ( far left ) and company President and CEO Eric Erickson III ( third from right ), break ground on the new facility.

W&H, Sun Chemical To Co-host Color Event

On the eve before PACK EXPO, Sun Chemical and Windmoeller & Hoelscher will co-host a special event — TransformYour Packaging with COLOR — for brand owners, converters and designers that will review trends and showcase the impact of color on packaging for shelf standout. Held on November 5th from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at R5 Chicago, a new consumer insights and innovation lab located in the heart of Chicago’s West Loop, the event will feature four guest speakers who will: • discuss trends that support the importance of color in package design, • show how color can be used effectively on packaging, • talk about the importance of color in the initial design concept, • explore key factors that should be discussed with a printer during the package design process, and • explain what tools a printer relies on to ensure precision with each project. Charles Murray, President of North American Inks at Sun Chemical, will be one of the speakers at the event as well as Ronald DeVlam from the packaging design agency, Webb deVlam; David Luttenberger from the marketing intelligence agency, Mintel; and Tom Apple from Windmoeller & Hoelscher. The pre- sentation will conclude with a Q&A featuring a panel of design and printer/converter professionals. Vetaphone Plans To Double Size Vetaphone owners Frank and Jan Eisby launched a program of growth for the company back in 2012 that would see the business double in size by 2020. Sales figures over the past four years have shown the target to be achievable with the addition of extra staff, but left a need for expanded facilities. The company has announced that architects have finished the design of a new building that will effec- tively double the size of the current headquarters in Kolding, Denmark, and allow production to be in- creased to meet the demand that those sales targets require. The new facility will add 1,500 square meters of floorspace, divided between sales and administration offices, and a canteen facility, with 350 square meters devoted to a dedicated showroom and test facility for customers. The existing 1,100 square meters building will be refurbished and commissioned exclusively for LEAN manufacturing and production.

Packaging Market To Surpass $1 Trillion Mark By 2026 The overall value of the packaging market is set to rise at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 3.8 per- cent from $806.3 billion in 2016 to $1.162 trillion in 2026, according to market research firm Smithers Pira. Packaging design will play a major part in facili- tating this growth. The report, The Future of Packag- ing Design: Long-Term Strategic Forecasts to 2026 , stated the future of the packaging industry, as any other, will be shaped by general political, economic, social and technological factors. Meanwhile, the spe- cific future of packaging design to 2021 and 2026 is predicted to be determined by supply side techno- logical trends and demand side consumer trends. Factors such as convenience, consumer income, health and wellness, and single-person households on market demand, and on resulting packaging de- sign trends were taken into account when conduct- ing the research. “The political environment will affect the packag- ing industry and packaging design via initiatives, leg- islation and regulation affecting environmental affairs such as sustainability, food packaging labelling and packaging safety,” said Ashley Gange, report author. “Sustainability has become a particularly important

consideration in many areas over the past decade. This is especially true in packaging where it is a major issue since packaging materials are extremely visible to the consumer. This is because packaging as a single-use product faces intense and growing pres- sures from consumers, retailers, suppliers, govern- ments, regulators, NGOs, environmental groups and others for the development of environmentally friendly solutions.” Changing Workforce For the first time the European labor market saw more workers retired than joined in 2010. The im- pact of this trend on the printing industry will be- come more evident with time, as the gap is predicted to widen substantially. In a decade, larger countries including Canada, China and South Korea will have more people at retirement than working age. By end use, greatest actual growth was recorded by food packaging, which increased in value at a CAGR of 3.6 percent from 2010 to 2015. Its share of total packaging value rose by 1.7 percent over this time. The rate of growth in food packaging is forecast at a CAGR of 3.8 percent from 2016 to 2021, resulting in an increase in total share of packaging value of 0.2 percent over this time.

Ryerson Receives Esko Flexo Plate Imager

Esko has donated a new Esko CDI flexo plate im- ager to Ryerson University's School of Graphic Com- munications Management (GCM), Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The gift in kind donation of an Esko CDI Spark 2530 flexo plate imager, replacing the one they have had for a few years, will help Ryerson students continue to learn and practice f lexographic platemaking processes. It will be used in conjunction with a complete Esko packaging workflow that is also in place at the university. The Ryerson School of Graphic Communications Management (GCM) offers Canada’s only degree- granting program for the printing industries. In re- cent years, the number of students at GCM going to packaging companies has increased rapidly. Throughout the program, students network with potential employers and gain practical experience in the industry through formal internships or part-time work. They also work alongside dedicated and knowl- edgeable faculty members in a state-of-the art facility equipped with industry leading equipment. Offering Solutions “Esko always tries to offer solutions to top tier graph- ic, design and packaging schools so that their students are working with the latest technology and ready re- sources for the industries we serve,” explained Larry Moore, Esko Vice President, North American Partner Programs.“Ryerson, in my opinion, is an extremely im- portant and valuable resource for packaging compa- nies across Canada. I have met many Ryerson graduates and they have always been key players.” The CDI Spark 2530 flexo plate imager images digital flexo plates up to 25 inches x 30 inches and comes with an incorporated plate loading table and an Easy- Clamp II drum for easier and faster plate loading. “This major donation will allow our 600+ GCM stu- dents to learn platemaking on the most up-to-date equipment. The process creating packaging requires challenging, evolving technology and the tools our students use are on the cutting edge,” said Natalia Lumby, Associate Professor at the School of Graphic Communications Management at Ryerson University. “Students are introduced to platemaking in their first year. By the third year, they produce flexo plates on the CDI on their own.” GCM this past year introduced a brand new cur- riculum with a packaging concentration and will be launching consumer packaging courses—including workflow—this academic year. The curriculum en- compasses the theory of design and production.
