QUALITY PERFORMANCE AWARDS HIGHLY COMMENDED: Energy Efficiency Project GEDA/WSI JOINT VENTURE AUGHLISH WPS UPGRADE, CRAIGAVON Judges were impressed by the technical delivery and substantial energy savings achieved at Aughlish WPS, awarding a close second to GEDA and Water Solutions Ireland. The project aligns with NI Water’s ambitious targets to achieve net zero operational energy by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2040. Through ISO 50001-aligned energy analysis, Aughlish was identified as one of its highest energy-consuming pumping stations, with significant optimisation potential. A reuse-first approach was adopted, retaining 96.8% of existing infrastructure, which avoided 31tCO2e of embodied carbon and diverted 250t of waste from landfill. Demonstrating a scalable model for low-carbon infrastructure delivery, the Aughlish WPS upgrade has generated annual energy savings of £96,000.
WINNER: Energy Efficiency Project H&A GROUP NIHE LOW CARBON PROGRAMME
Setting a new benchmark for social housing, the Low Carbon Retrofit Programme is led by the NI Housing Executive, with H&A Group as a lead partner. The region’s largest whole-house retrofit initiative, it combines air-source heat pumps, solar PV, battery storage, enhanced insulation, high-performance glazing, airtightness improvements and upgraded ventilation systems. To date, H&A Group has completed over 200 of the homes targeted for upgrade, contributing to reductions of 37% in the average household energy bill and over 60% for carbon emissions. Judges said the scale, evidence-based delivery, independent oversight, positive resident outcomes and investment in industry capability distinguished this project from an extremely strong field.
