QUALITY PERFORMANCE AWARDS WINNER: Design Excellence DORAN CONSULTING & ARUP BELFAST GRAND CENTRAL STATION Doran Consulting and Arup exemplified the spirit of Design Excellence in their exceptional collaboration to deliver Belfast Grand Central Station. Arup was the client’s engineer for the station, its surroundings and the wider masterplan in collaboration with Doran Consulting as D&B engineer. The two firms combined their engineering expertise to create Ireland’s largest integrated transport facility, which meets modern standards of efficiency, accessibility and environmental performance. Technical challenges were approached as a team with a solutions-focused mindset, as were complex issues such as Covid, war and supply chain inflation. The team demonstrated genuine innovation through advanced modelling, BIM and integrated design, translating technical expertise into tangible project benefits.

Over 24 months, 241 safety leadership interactions have ensured consistent on-site presence and direct engagement between senior leaders and frontline teams. Competence and wellbeing are prioritised through over 16,000 training hours delivered in two years, supported by occupational health programmes. The company’s skills development strategy combines targeted recruitment and inclusive workforce initiatives. Early careers are a key priority with annual recruitment of apprentices and graduates, alongside significant investment in continuous professional development. Key initiatives include securing waste exemptions to safely manage coal tar asphalt while supporting infrastructure delivery, and recycling approximately 25,000 tonnes of concrete roof tiles into high-quality secondary aggregates. Reducing reliance on primary cement through lower-carbon alternatives, water stewardship has been strengthened through enhanced metering and digital monitoring. Carbon management is embedded into daily operations. Site teams actively manage KPIs such as energy intensity, fuel use and recycled material inputs. This disciplined approach has already delivered a 14% absolute emissions reduction against a 2021 baseline.
