BSG CIVIL ENGINEERING MEADOWLANE WWPS, ARMAGH

GRAHAM CULMORE TRUNK SEWER PROJECT

Overcoming the challenges of a constrained urban setting through exceptional stakeholder collaboration and innovative engineering solutions, BSG Civil Engineering impressed judges with its delivery of Meadowlane WwPS. The £10.5m scheme has replaced an ageing asset to deliver a modern, resilient solution that improves service reliability and environment protection for the Portadown community. Facing complex ground conditions, obstruction risks, limited land and strict noise and vibration limits, BSG rigorously assessed all tunnelling options before selecting a closed-face slurry tunnel boring system. Early contractor involvement allowed alignment of resources and integration of objectives with NI Water and project manager McAdam to successful manage multiple stakeholders.

As the largest and most advanced sewer rehabilitation project undertaken on the island of Ireland, GRAHAM’s Culmore Trunk Sewer Rehabilitation Project has set a new benchmark for engineering innovation and sustainable performance. More than 1.7km of trunk sewer was restored, without interrupting full public access or the flow of 30,000 daily vehicles along Queens Quay in Derry. GRAHAM adopted digital assurance, lean construction and UV cured trenchless technology, eliminating the need for disruptive open-cut excavation and significantly reducing environmental impact, traffic disruption and carbon emissions. Installing liners in long continuous lengths, under live flows exceeding 1,100 litres per second, required meticulous planning, specialist capability and precise digital assurance.
