INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT
WINNER: Infrastructure Project above £10m PIPERHILL CONSTRUCTION PROJECT PEGASUS TERMINAL EXTENSION, BELFAST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Piperhill Construction’s terminal renovation and extension at Belfast International Airport, accommodating the mandatory introduction of C3 cabin baggage scanning, has been adopted as a template for roll out across VINCI Airports. The 7,300sqm two-storey extension was safely delivered while more than 10,000 people daily passed through the third of the building remaining operational. Collaboration and meticulous planning were key to the project’s success, with the build completed in 20 phases including significant out-of-hours working. Innovation engineering solutions included piling works to avoid deep excavations around the live departures terminal structure. Early supply chain engagement enabled the security hall to open 10 months ahead of overall project completion.

FLYNN HILDEN & LAMBEG SLUICE GATES REPLACEMENT
FLYNN’s project replacing the Hilden and Lambeg flood gates demonstrates how investment in modest, unseen infrastructure can deliver huge, lasting benefits. Providing critical flood protection to nearly 2,500 residential and commercial properties in South Belfast and Lisburn, the project replaced ageing infrastructure with modern mechanical winches and telemetry stations. A 250t-capacity crane was manoeuvred through a private residential driveway and new stone lane to lift prefabricated structures, including a new nine-tonne gate, into place in a flowing river. FLYNN’s rapid, proactive response averted crisis when three major storms hit during works, causing the failure of an upstream weir and flooding of the construction site twice.
