Publisher’s Letter

Welcome to the very first issue of VINCE: Six Weeks to Fitness for Adults 40+ Lifestyle Magazine.

When we envisioned this digital magazine, we didn’t just want to create another wellness publication. We wanted to build a sanctuary—a vibrant, trusting community where adults over 40 can find the genuine support, inspiration, and tools needed to completely reclaim their health and vitality. Transformation doesn't happen in isolation; it happens through collaboration, shared stories, and the collective energy of people lifting one another up.

I had the absolute honor of sitting down with a true visionary: Vincent Ferguson, the creator of the legendary Children’s Choice Awards. Our conversation took an unforgettable turn as we looked back at a moment of pure magic: the year Michael Jackson was named the honoree and stunned the world by appearing in person. Vincent shares the raw emotion, the behind-the-scenes energy, and what it felt like to witness an icon connect so deeply with a cause. It is a heartwarming, nostalgic journey that reminds us of the power of dreaming big and showing up fully.

"Transformation is a collaborative journey. When we align our shared experiences and support one another, the potential for personal renewal is limitless."

That same spirit of dedication and excellence is what we are pouring into this magazine and its digital counterpart. To truly stay connected and dive deeper into your wellness journey, I personally invite you to explore our companion website, www.vincemag.press. We will do what we can to earn your trust.

Q&A

WITH VINCENT FERGUSON

INSIDE THE 1994 CHILDREN’S CHOICE AWARDS IN NY In 1994, the Caring for Kids Children’s Choice Awards gave youth a powerful voice, crowning Michael Jackson as their favorite artist amidst intense media scrutiny. In this exclusive interview, Vincent Ferguson takes us behind the scenes of that historic night when Michael appeared to accept his honor. Question : “The unique premise of the Children’s Choice Awards was that the winners were chosen entirely by youth balloting across the tri-state area. When the votes were tallied and you realized 100,000 children had overwhelmingly chosen Michael Jackson for the ‘Caring for Kids Award,’ what Answer: Once it became clear that he would accept the award, I was excited, not just because of his celebrity status, but because it meant that the voices of those 100,000 children would be heard and respected on a very public stage. This was always about giving our children a voice to be heard and they chose Michael Jackson. was your immediate reaction, especially amid the intense public and media scrutiny taking place at the time?”

By Glenna Gonzalez, MBA

That's what our sponsors believed in, and that's why they supported the program long before Michael Jackson's name was ever mentioned. Was it a difficult decision? Absolutely. On one hand, I had a responsibility to stay true to the mission of the organization. On the other hand, I understood there could be serious financial consequences if we went against the wishes of a major sponsor. But this wasn't a decision I made alone. I brought the issue to our Board of Directors, and after discussing it, the vote was unanimous. We agreed that if the Children's Choice Awards was truly about honoring the voices of children, then we had to respect their choice, regardless of any potential backlash. In the end, we chose principle over pressure, and I've never regretted that decision.

JULY 2026

INSIDE THE 1994 CHILDREN’S CHOICE AWARDS IN NY (CONT.) Question : “Because your awards show strictly required honorees to accept their awards in person, there must have been immense anticipation. What was the atmosphere like backstage right before Michael Jackson arrived? What were the security logistics and the energy of the staff like?” Answer: Yes, one thing that made the Children's Choice Awards different from many other award shows was that our honorees were required to appear in person to accept their awards from the children. Because of that, there was always excitement, but when Michael Jackson was scheduled to attend, the anticipation was on another level. Backstage, the atmosphere was electric. Everyone was excited, focused, and hoping everything would go smoothly. There was a real sense that we were about to witness something special. As for security, my brother, Bernard Ferguson, who was a New York City police officer at the time, coordinated our 15-member security team. They handled Michael's arrival at New York City Center, escorted him safely through the venue, and accompanied him back to his waiting limousine after he accepted the Caring for Kids Award. It was a highly organized operation, but you could definitely feel the excitement in the air. Question: “We have these incredible original photos of you standing right beside Michael Jackson at the event. What do you remember about your personal, face-to-face interactions with him that day? What did he say to you about the award, and what surprised you most about his demeanor?”

Answer: It was exciting for me to meet Michael Jackson in person, but at the same time, I was focused on making sure the event ran smoothly. As the producer, I had a job to do. One moment that stands out is when I first met Michael and escorted him toward the stage. He asked me, "Who's in the audience?" I told him, "Lots of children and their families, and they love you." When he heard that, he smiled. It almost seemed as if he felt relieved knowing he was about to be surrounded by children who genuinely appreciated him. After he accepted the Caring for Kids Award, I escorted him off the stage. He thanked me for the award and then, in a very soft voice, asked, "Which way do I go?" I took him by the arm and guided him toward our security team, who escorted him to his waiting limousine. What surprised me most was his demeanor. Here was arguably the biggest entertainer in the world, yet he wasn't commanding or larger than life behind the scenes. He was humble, soft-spoken, and surprisingly meek. That was not what I expected, but it was the impression he left on me that day. Question: “When Michael walked out onto the stage at the Children’s Sports & Fitness Expo to accept the award from the kids, what happened inside the room? How did the children and families in attendance react compared to the broader public narrative that existed at the time? Answer: The reaction inside the room was incredible. The children and families were absolutely ecstatic. They were cheering, screaming his name, and hanging on his every word. One moment I'll never forget was when a young girl shouted, "I love you, Michael!" Without hesitation, Michael responded, "I love you too." The crowd erupted.

1994 Magic: The Night the Children's Choice Awards Honored Michael Jackson

Next-Gen Looks

12

When much of the mainstream media and corporate sponsors turned their backs on the King of Pop in 1994, an unexpected group of people stood up to make their voices heard: the children. Often lost in the shadow of major televised award shows, this incredible rare footage captures the night Michael Jackson was presented with the "Caring for Kids" Award at the Second Annual Children's Choice Awards in New York. This wasn’t a Hollywood-engineered marketing stunt—this award was driven entirely by a massive grassroots vote of 100,000 inner-city youth who wanted to honor MJ's profound impact on drug prevention and youth welfare programs. Watch this beautifully restored piece of history to see Michael Jackson right where he felt honored—surrounded by the love, truth, and joy of the next generation. It’s a powerful reminder of the legacy he left behind outside of the recording studio.

INSIDE THE 1994 CHILDREN’S CHOICE AWARDS IN NY (CONT.) The joy in that room was genuine and unforgettable. What's interesting is that the atmosphere inside the venue was very different from the narrative being portrayed in much of the media at the time. The children weren't focused on headlines or controversy. They were responding to someone they admired and felt connected to. Many media outlets viewed the event through a different lens and often framed it with skepticism. But from where I stood that day, what I witnessed was 100,000 children making their voices heard and one of the world's biggest entertainers being embraced by the very audience the award was created to represent. Question: “Vince, you’ve shared that Michael’s longtime VP of Communications, Bob Jones, later reflected on your 1994 ceremony as one of Michael’s especially meaningful public appearances. From your perspective standing beside him that day, did you sense that receiving recognition directly from children and families carried a unique emotional weight for him?” Answer: He was going through a period of intense public scrutiny, yet here were thousands of children and families expressing their appreciation and support for him. From my perspective, it seemed to resonate with him because the recognition wasn't coming from industry insiders or the media; it was coming directly from the children. Michael was known for his desire to make a positive impact in their lives. I can't speak for what he was feeling internally, but I can say that he appeared genuinely appreciative of the honor. Afterward, Bob Jones told me how much Michael loved receiving that award, which reinforced my belief that it held special meaning for him

Question: “Looking back at these archival photographs decades later, how do you view that day in the broader context of your life’s work with Body Sculpt of New York? What message do you hope readers take away about courage, leadership, and listening to young people when the rest of the world encourages conformity?” Answer: When I look back at those photographs today, I don't just see Michael Jackson. I see a moment when our organization stayed true to its mission. Body Sculpt of New York was founded on the belief that young people deserve to be heard, whether we're talking about health, fitness, leadership, or choosing the role models who inspire them. The Children's Choice Awards was created to give children a voice, and in 1994 we were tested on whether we truly believed in that mission. Leadership isn't about doing what's popular or convenient. It's about standing by your principles when it's difficult. We knew there could be consequences for honoring the children's choice, but we also knew that ignoring their voices would have undermined everything the program stood for. The message I hope readers take away is simple: Never underestimate the wisdom of young people. When adults take the time to listen, children can teach us a great deal about loyalty, compassion, and courage. Sometimes true leadership means having the courage to stand apart from the crowd and remain faithful to the values that brought you there in the first place.

INSIDE THE 1994 CHILDREN’S CHOICE AWARDS IN NY (CONT.) Question: “In 1994, you were impacting communities locally through live expos and fitness events. Today, you’ve launched the Six Weeks to Fitness w/ Vince community on the Skool platform, bringing wellness coaching, expert interviews, accountability, and fitness gamification to people across the country. How has building this digital community allowed you to scale the same mission of empowerment and health that you started decades ago?” Answer: The mission has remained the same for more than 30 years: helping people live healthier, more empowered lives. What has changed is the way I'm able to reach them. Back in the 1990s, we impacted communities through our Children's Choice Awards programs. In the 2000s, we impacted communities through our Children's Sports & Fitness Expos, youth fitness programs, and other special events throughout New York City. Those programs were powerful, but they were limited by geography. If you weren't in the room, you missed the experience. Today, through the Six Weeks to Fitness w/ Vince community on Skool, I'm able to reach people wherever they are. Members can access wellness coaching, fitness challenges, expert interviews, accountability, and support from their phones or computers. Instead of helping hundreds or even thousands of people at a single event, I can now help people across the country every day. What excites me most is that the technology has changed, but the purpose hasn't. Whether it was empowering young people through the Children's Choice Awards,

helping families become more active through our fitness expos, or building an online wellness community today, my goal remains the same: to help people take control of their health, build confidence, and add more life to their years. Question: “Your Skool community thrives on interaction, shared accountability, leaderboards, and celebrating victories like weight loss, increased energy, and improved mental clarity. Why do you believe supportive communities are often far more effective for long-term health transformation than someone trying to tackle their fitness journey completely alone?” Answer: One of the biggest reasons people struggle to achieve their health and fitness goals is that they try to do it alone. Motivation comes and goes, but having a supportive community helps you stay consistent when motivation fades. When you're surrounded by people who are facing similar challenges, celebrating similar victories, and encouraging one another, you realize you're not alone. That sense of connection can make all the difference. In the Six Weeks to Fitness w/ Vince community, we celebrate more than just weight loss. We celebrate increased energy, better habits, improved confidence, and the small daily wins that eventually lead to major transformations. The leaderboards, challenges, and accountability tools help keep people engaged, but it's really the support and encouragement from the community that drives lasting change.

JULY 2026

INSIDE THE 1994 CHILDREN’S CHOICE AWARDS IN NY (CONT.) I’ve learned over the years that people don't just need information—they need inspiration, accountability, and a sense of belonging. When those elements come together, transformation becomes much more sustainable than trying to do everything on your own. Question: “After decades in wellness leadership, what do you think people still misunderstand most about the connection between encouragement, accountability, community support, and long-term health success?” Answer: I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that health transformation is simply about willpower. People often believe that if they just try harder, they'll succeed. But after more than three decades in wellness leadership, I've learned that lasting change is rarely a solo effort. Most people already know what they should be doing—eat better, move more, manage stress, and get adequate sleep. The challenge isn't a lack of information; it's maintaining those habits consistently over time. That's where encouragement, accountability, and community come in. Encouragement helps people believe they can succeed. Accountability helps them stay committed when life gets busy. Community support reminds them they're not alone in the journey. I've seen people accomplish things they never thought possible simply because they had someone cheering them on, checking in on them, and believing in them when they didn't believe in themselves. That's why I believe long-term health success is less about willpower and more about having the right support system around you.

When people feel supported, they stay engaged. When they stay engaged, they stay consistent. And consistency is where real transformation happens

Question: “Your newest book, More Life to Your Years: How to Stay Strong, Energized, and Fully Alive as You Age, directly challenges the idea that aging automatically means decline. After spending decades training others and watching the fitness industry evolve from the 1990s to today, what inspired you to write this book now? What is the major mindset shift you hope readers experience when it comes to longevity, vitality, and healthy aging?” Answer: After more than 30 years in the fitness and wellness industry, I've watched countless people accept decline as an inevitable part of aging. They assume that low energy, loss of strength, reduced mobility, and dependence on others are simply the price we pay for getting older. What inspired me to write More Life to Your Years is that now that I'm getting older myself, this topic has become even more personal. I'm no longer just coaching people through the aging process—I'm living it. And what I've discovered is that while aging is inevitable, decline is often accelerated by the choices we make every day. I wrote this book because I wanted people to understand the difference between lifespan and healthspan. Lifespan is how long you live. Healthspan is how long you live well. My goal isn't just to help people add years to their lives; it's to help them add life to their years.

17

VINCE MAGAZINE

JULY 2026

INSIDE THE 1994 CHILDREN’S CHOICE AWARDS IN NY (CONT.) The major mindset shift I hope readers experience is moving from a mindset of decline to a mindset of possibility. I want them to understand that they have far more influence over their future health than they may realize. Through movement, nutrition, mindset, purpose, and consistent daily habits, we can remain strong, energized, independent, and fully alive for far longer than many people believe. Getting older doesn't mean your best years are behind you. In many ways, they can still be ahead of you. Question: “When people look back on your career decades from now—not just the events, the celebrity moments, or the fitness coaching, but the overall impact— what do you hope your true legacy will be?” Answer: When people look back on my career, I hope they don't remember me primarily for the celebrities I met, the events I produced, or even the fitness programs I created. I hope they remember me as someone who empowered others to believe in themselves and take positive action in their lives. Whether it was giving children a voice through the Children's Choice Awards, helping families become more active through our fitness expos, coaching adults to improve their health, or encouraging people to embrace aging with strength and purpose, the common thread has always been empowerment. I've always believed that people are capable of far more than they realize.

Sometimes all they need is someone to encourage them, challenge them, and help them see what's possible. If my work has inspired someone to live a healthier life, overcome an obstacle, pursue a dream, serve their community, or simply believe in themselves a little more, then I will consider my life's work a success. At the end of the day, I don't want to be remembered for the moments I created. I want to be remembered for the lives I helped change and the hope I helped inspire.

That's the legacy that matters most to me.

Learn How to Prevent Heart Disease and Strokes: with Vince and Dr. Ford Brewer Is weight gain really just a part of getting older... or could your medications be playing a role? Many adults over 40 assume that gaining weight is simply an unavoidable part of aging. But what if that's only part of the story? In this episode of the Six Weeks to Fitness Podcast, wellness coach, author, and healthspan advocate Vince Ferguson explores the surprising connection between certain medications and weight gain. You'll learn why some prescriptions may contribute to increased appetite, fluid retention, lower energy levels, or changes in metabolism— and why understanding these potential side effects can help you have better conversations with your healthcare provider. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, yet it remains a silent threat, especially in women. Many people are unaware of the significant risks they face, particularly because CVD often presents without clear symptoms until it's too late. In women, the risks of heart disease and strokes are frequently underestimated, despite the fact that they can be just as vulnerable as men. Prevention, therefore, plays a crucial role in managing cardiovascular health, with a focus on lifestyle changes rather than just treatment after an event occurs. Dr. Ford Brewer’s approach to preventive medicine emphasizes the importance of early intervention, advocating for lifestyle changes such as improved diet, regular physical activity, and stress management as keys to long-term health. Understanding and managing risk factors is vital for preventing cardiovascular issues, and early detection can make a life-saving difference. Key risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes contribute to the development of heart disease and strokes. However, lifestyle choices, including smoking, poor diet, and lack of exercise, also play a significant role in accelerating these risks. Through preventive strategies, individuals can reduce the likelihood of these conditions manifesting and significantly extend their lifespan. By addressing risk factors early and making sustainable lifestyle modifications, individuals can enjoy a healthier, longer life, even into their 60s, 70s, and beyond. Important: This video is for educational purposes only and is not medical advice. Never stop taking prescribed medications without first consulting your healthcare provider. If you're over 40 and looking to improve your health, lose weight safely, build strength, increase energy, and enjoy a longer, healthier life, this episode is for you. High-Impact Growth for Nonprofits: How to Build a Thriving Community That Fuels Your Mission

The organizations that thrive are not always the ones with the largest budgets—they are the ones that build the strongest communities. Technology has transformed how nonprofits engage supporters, recruit volunteers, educate the public, and raise funds. While grants and annual fundraising campaigns remain important, sustainable nonprofit growth now depends on something even more valuable: creating an engaged community that believes in your mission and willingly shares it with others. Over the years, I have worked with nonprofit organizations on marketing, public relations, strategic growth, and fundraising initiatives. One strategy has consistently produced long-term value: building an authority platform that combines storytelling, digital media, educational content, and community engagement. When people feel connected to a mission, they don't simply donate—they become ambassadors.

BY GLENNA GONZALEZ, MBA

Every successful nonprofit begins with a purpose, but purpose alone does not create momentum. People support organizations that inspire them, educate them, and consistently provide value.

Community building creates opportunities to: Increase donor retention Recruit passionate volunteers

Attract corporate sponsors Build strategic partnerships Expand media visibility Increase recurring donations Create long-term advocates

LEARN FROM VISIONARY LEADERSHIP One remarkable example of community-centered leadership comes from Vincent Ferguson. Long before social media transformed communications, Vincent understood that meaningful recognition and authentic relationships could inspire lasting impact. In 1994, he founded the Children's Choice Awards, an event that honored children while bringing together celebrities, educators, families, and community leaders around a shared purpose. 20

The event famously honored Michael Jackson, demonstrating how influential voices can elevate a mission and inspire broader public engagement. While few organizations will host celebrity events on that scale, the lesson remains timeless: people are drawn to organizations that celebrate others, tell meaningful stories, and create experiences that unite communities around a common cause.

Today's nonprofit leaders can apply that same philosophy using modern digital tools.

Your Organization Is More Than a Cause~ It Is a Media Company

One of the greatest opportunities available to nonprofits today is becoming their own media platform. Instead of waiting for newspapers or television stations to tell your story, you can publish it yourself. Organizations that consistently produce valuable content establish credibility while improving search engine visibility and donor confidence. Every piece of content becomes another opportunity for someone to discover your mission.

Examples include:

Volunteer spotlights Podcasts Community newsletters Digital magazines Resource directories Live webinars

DIGITAL MAGAZINES One fundraising strategy I have successfully implemented with nonprofit clients is the creation of digital magazines. Unlike a traditional fundraiser that ends after a single event, a digital publication becomes a long- term marketing asset.

A nonprofit magazine can feature: ~Donor recognition

~Volunteer appreciation ~Community success stories

~Sponsor advertisements

~Financial literacy

~Housing assistance

21

CREATE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

No nonprofit can achieve its fullest potential alone. Strategic partnerships enable organizations to expand their reach, increase their credibility, and amplify their impact without significantly increasing their operating budgets. By collaborating with businesses, community leaders, educational institutions, healthcare providers, and mission-aligned organizations, nonprofits can access new audiences, share valuable resources, develop innovative programs, and create mutually beneficial relationships. The most successful nonprofit leaders understand that partnerships are not simply about asking for financial support —they are about building long-term alliances that advance a shared mission while creating measurable value for everyone involved.

Growth accelerates when nonprofits collaborate rather than compete.

Consider partnering with: Local businesses

Colleges and universities Faith-based organizations Government agencies Community foundations

Jessie Founder, Soul Serenity

Reconnecting for True Healing

Hello Everyone, I'm Jessie, founder of Soul Serenity.

My passion is helping others find peace, balance, and healing on their personal journey. Through Reiki energy healing, guided meditation, herbal teas, therapeutic bath soaks, and personalized self-care experiences, I create nurturing opportunities for relaxation, renewal, and overall well-being. I specialize in Distance Reiki sessions for both people and pets, allowing healing energy to be shared regardless of location. This flexible approach makes it easy for clients—and their beloved animal companions—to experience the calming and balancing benefits of Reiki from the comfort of their own environment. If you're new to Reiki, think of it as a gentle, non-invasive energy healing practice that promotes relaxation and helps support the body's natural ability to heal. During a Reiki session, I use light touch or work just above the body—or, in the case of Distance Reiki, connect energetically across any distance—to help encourage balance and the flow of energy. Many people experience a sense of calm, peace, and deep relaxation during and after a session. I believe true healing begins when we take time to reconnect with ourselves—mind, body, and spirit. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by life's demands, seeking emotional balance, coping with stress, or simply looking for a moment of calm, Soul Serenity offers a welcoming space where you can pause, breathe, and restore your inner peace. Every service and product I offer is created with intention, compassion, and a genuine desire to help others feel supported, empowered, and cared for throughout their healing journey. My mission is to provide a safe, peaceful environment where healing can unfold naturally and where each person feels valued and encouraged to embrace their own path to wellness. At Soul Serenity, my goal is simple: to help you nurture your soul, embrace your wellness, and discover the peace that already exists within you.

Salford Magazine

Meals Healthy Clean eating is all about embracing whole, minimally processed foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. Instead of counting calories, the focus shifts to fueling your body with nutrient-dense ingredients—like vibrant vegetables, crisp fruits, hearty whole grains, and lean proteins— while cutting back on artificial additives, refined sugars, and heavy processing. It’s less of a restrictive diet and more of a sustainable lifestyle that celebrates fresh, wholesome ingredients that make you feel energized from the inside out.

A perfectly seared, golden-brown salmon fillet takes center stage on a bed of hearty, nutty ancient grains, promising a rich and savory bite. Nestled beside it is a vibrant medley of roasted broccoli, sweet bell peppers, and tender red onion, all caramelized to bring out their natural sweetness. A crisp, refreshing garden salad tossed with juicy cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, and creamy avocado adds a bright burst of freshness, while a squeeze of zesty lemon from the water glass on the side ties this wholesome, color-rich plate together into the ultimate guilt-free comfort meal. This vibrant, wholesome dish features tender slices of herb-marinated grilled chicken breast served over a bed of al dente whole-wheat penne pasta. It’s tossed with a colorful melody of roasted vegetables—including blistered cherry tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, and zucchini—alongside crisp, nutrient-dense broccoli florets. Finished with a sprinkle of fresh basil, a light dusting of parmesan, and a bright squeeze of lemon juice, this dish perfectly balances comforting, savory Italian flavors with clean, fuel-focused nutrition. 41

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL

Timeless Charm: Why St. Augustine is Florida’s Ultimate Weekend Getaway

When people think of a Florida getaway, they usually picture neon-lit South Beach strips, sprawling Orlando theme parks, or the laid-back, margarita-soaked keys. But nestled on the northeast coast lies a destination that subverts every classic Florida trope. St. Augustine, affectionately known as the "Nation’s Oldest City," offers a European-style escape right in the Sunshine State. Founded by Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565, this compact coastal jewel seamlessly blends 450 years of history with a booming culinary scene, pristine beaches, and undeniable romance. Whether you have 24 hours or a full long weekend, St. Augustine is the ultimate drive-to destination. 44

St. Augustine's scenic waterfront along the Matanzas River serves as the picturesque eastern border of the historic district. Dominated by the sprawling seawall and the iconic Bridge of Lions, the harbor offers breathtaking views of sailboats gliding past and dolphins playing in the wake. It is a vibrant hub where history meets leisure, allowing travelers to stroll along the Matanzas Bay path, catch a sunset charter, or relax at a breezy outdoor cafe while enjoying the Atlantic trade winds. The Treasury—located in the heart of historic St. Augustine, Florida—is a premier venue renowned for its architectural grandeur and rich history. Originally built in 1927 as the First National Bank, it stands as a stunning example of Mediterranean Revival architecture, complete with towering ceilings, ornate columns, and its centerpiece: the massive, authentic 1920s bank vault that now serves as a unique backdrop for events. Today, the space has been meticulously converted into an elegant, upscale venue for weddings and private galas, blending old-world historic charm with modern luxury. Built in 1891 by Henry Flagler to look like a grand hotel rather than a prison, the St. Augustine Old Jail hid a dark and harsh reality behind its Romanesque Revival facade. For nearly 60 years, it housed some of Florida’s most dangerous criminals under brutal, maximum-security conditions. Today, visitors can take guided tours led by actors in period dress. Find out more about St. Augustine in our online magazine site, HERE.
