ACHIEVING LONG-TERM FINANCIAL AND CARBON SAVINGS FOR HOMEOWNERS WITH EFFICIENT, INNOVATIVE HEATING PRODUCTS THAT ARE EASY TO INSTALL AND WORK SEAMLESSLY TOGETHER… Grant’s award-wining heating technologies continue to lead the way in 2024

F or more than 45 years, Grant’s innovative heating solutions have been helping to address the problem of rising energy costs and reduce carbon emissions, contributing to a greener future. As we enter a new year, the drive towards sustainable home heating is more important than ever, and Grant continues its focus on developing highly efficient, innovative heating products that are easy to install, work seamlessly together and ensure long-term financial and carbon savings for the homeowner.

In recent years, Grant has largely transformed to a renewable heating company with its portfolio including ranges of HVO biofuel boilers, condensing wood pellet boilers, solar thermal panels, underfloor heating, hot water cylinders, aluminium radiators, and air-to-water air source heat pumps. The consistent demand and interest among the trade for Grant’s heat pump technology has been reflected primarily through the impressive numbers of heating industry professionals that continue to attend Grant heat pump

training courses at the manufacturer’s HQ in Birr, Co Offaly, as well as online via the Grant eLearning Academy. A popular choice for the heating system of a new-build property, the Grant Aerona 3 heat pump range offers cleaner, more environmentally friendly performance and can help achieve relevant compliance under building regulations. With an ErP rating of A+++ and a SCOP of up to 5.4:1, the Grant Aerona 3 is available in outputs of 6kW, 10kW, 13kW and 17kW. The 13kW and 17kW models are also recognised for their

including SEAI Best Renewable Heating Product and Heating Product of the Year at Ireland’s Plumbing & Heating Awards, and was a finalist in the sustainability category at the Irish Times Innovation Awards. With multiple award wins for its forward-thinking Vortex technology, the impending launch of a new sustainable heating product to market, and its ever-expanding training opportunities for plumbers and installers to ‘upskill’, Grant is on course to make 2024 just as successful as ever. “Our R&D team continues to advance our product ranges, and we will very soon be announcing new additions to our portfolio.”

quiet operation by the internationally acclaimed Quiet Mark. “This year will see further innovation for the Grant Aerona 3 heat pump range,” said Barry Gorman, National Renewables Sales Manager at Grant. “Our R&D team continues to advance our product ranges and we will very soon be announcing new additions to our portfolio.” More plumbers and installers across the country are turning to Grant’s multi award-winning Vortex condensing boiler range to futureproof existing properties with its ability to run on 100% HVO biofuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). All boilers within the range come HVO- ready and older Grant condensing boilers can be adapted to run on HVO, with required modifications being carried out by a service engineer during an annual service. This adaptability of the Grant Vortex range is helping homeowners reduce carbon emissions by 87%, and avoid the high costs and disruption to

daily life caused by deep retrofitting. Commenting on this innovation and how it will help to further reduce carbon emissions in 2024 and beyond, Barry Gorman, National Renewables Sales Manager at Grant, said, “As an indicator of Grant’s foresight, Grant Vortex boilers sold since 2012 were designed for use with biofuels, only needing minor adjustments presently to use 100% HVO biofuel. The HVO biofuel-ready Grant Vortex is enabling rural and hard-to- heat homes to affordably transition to a renewable alternative with minimum disruption. “To put this in perspective, if all homes in Ireland using kerosene converted to HVO today, the emissions from the liquid fuel heating sector annually could reduce by almost 90%, which would be a significant help to achieve carbon targets set for 2030.” The Grant HVO biofuel compatible Vortex range has received many accolades

MANUFACTURER - ROCA

Horizon 900mm vanity unit with Marquina Black cast marble countertop and Matt Black countertop basin.

ROCA IRELAND’S LATEST COLLECTIONS DELIVER ON ALL LEVELS SAYS GLENN CAMPBELL, HEAD OF ROCA IRELAND... Furniture and basins to suit every bathroom

W ith more than 100 years of experience in the bathroom industry, Roca is now recognised worldwide as a leading manufacturer of bathroom solutions. The Horizon vanity is available in two sizes, 700mm and 900mm, and features a deep main drawer and hidden top drawer, making it a great solution for both family bathrooms and stylish ensuites.

COUNTERTOP BASINS TO MATCH

For every stylish vanity unit, Roca has a huge selection of countertop basins to choose from in all sizes, shapes and designs. Harnessing the power of Roca’s Fineceramic® to create ultra-thin but super-strong ceramic pieces, the elegant Terra and Bol basins both have beautiful circular designs and are available in Matt White, Gloss White and Matt Black. In fact, on-trend Matt Black has found its way to several of the basin collections, including the Ohtake basin. Designed by the late famed architect Ruy Ohtake, the collection has been newly extended in his honour with a Matt Black finish. Also made of Fineceramic®, the colour perfectly accentuates the slender walls and sculptural shape. The Ohtake basin is also available in Gloss White, Matt White, Pearl, Beige, Coffee and Onyx. Finally, the Horizon collection makes a striking monochrome statement in a choice of Matt White, Gloss White or Matt Black, which pairs beautifully with the warm wood tones of the Horizon slatted furniture. These highly contemporary basins (measuring 600 x 420mm) have a striking angled shape and the option of both tap deck and countertop-mounted tap designs.

models that measure 1200mm. As more bathrooms are being squeezed into homes and additional cloakrooms are becoming increasingly popular, small-space solutions are more necessary than ever. However, this doesn’t mean we should sacrifice aesthetics and functionality in pieces that are suitable for cloakrooms. After all, this is the room that most guests will see and use. A great example of a small-space solution is the Mini Pro vanity with an integrated washbasin. It measures just 465mm(w) x 258mm(d), yet it still provides enough space for useful cupboard storage and an open shelf at the bottom. It even includes a handy integrated hook on the side for hanging towels. Additionally, the door and washbasin are reversible, allowing for maximum design freedom in compact spaces. A SPLASH OF COLOUR In the past, bathroom furniture was only available in white. However, nowadays people are looking for something that

can serve as a striking focal point in their bathrooms. Roca is at the forefront of this trend with its range of The Gap vanities, which are available in a selection of colours and finishes. This includes four new colours, one of which is a standout shade of Matt Blue with contrasting Matt Black handles. Blue is a calming and timeless colour that also works well with a range of colour schemes, making it a versatile choice. TREND-LED SOLUTIONS Along with colour, consumers are craving more interesting finishes in the bathroom too. For instance, the popularity of slatted and fluted finishes remains strong in the home, and the bathroom vanity unit is the perfect place to incorporate this texture. Roca has nailed the trend for slatted furniture with the Horizon range. It features a slatted front in a dark-oak finish combined with a choice of white or black basin and cast-marble countertop for a look that oozes high-end contemporary sophistication.

Update:

AMID GREAT CHANGE, THE BASIC UNDERLYING SKILLS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP OF THE TRADE REMAIN THE SAME, SAYS THE ASSOCIATION OF PLUMBING & HEATING CONTRACTORS IRELAND (APHCI), OFFERING ITS OUTLOOK FOR 2024…

Pivoting towards a low-carbon future

A s a busy 2023 draws to a close, we look forward to the years ahead with a sense of trepidation and excitement. The trade as we know it is undergoing a period of great change, probably the greatest since electricity became available to all. Yet all remains the same in that the basic underlying skills and craftsmanship of the trade remain unchanged. Yes, every day there are new designs of equipment and materials, but they are all intended to carry out the same basic functions as always, be it heating, cooling or transporting water, air or other fluids. They all have to be installed, jointed, secured and insulated in accordance with the current standards and manufacturers’ instructions; all based on the trade skills of old. Looking forward, we all must recognise that we all have to conserve energy and pivot towards the low carbon future where possible, and ensure all installations are as efficient as they can possibly be. Things like the old rule of thumb of watts per square metre or BTUs per cubic foot should have been long ago consigned to history and replaced with proper heat loss calculations. Energy sources, controls, zoning and

hot water storage need to be optimised for each installation and customer, while the correct attention to insulation is also required. In the case of pipework, the days of 9mm or 12mm wall foam pipe insulation, with open joints is long past. The minimum requirement is the correct thickness of insulation depending on pipe size and location with all joints sealed and all fittings properly insulated. Now more than ever, we all need to play our part in the success of our trade into the future. It is a team effort. Everyone needs to have pride in their work and resist the urge to sacrifice quality for speed. Our customers, large and small are putting their trust in us and spending their hard-earned money on an installation that they hope will last many years, if not their lifetime. They deserve the best. Suppliers need to ensure they stock only good quality materials and resist the lure of increased margins and cheaper prices offered by equipment of inferior quality. At national level, the powers that be need to resist the urge to reduce the training requirements for our apprentices. Our craftspeople are among the best trained and qualified in the world, and this pays dividends in the long run. However, they

do need to increase the availability of apprenticeship training for off-the-job phases, which is a serious issue at the moment. The availability of additional courses for those who wish to upskill also needs to be addressed. Monitoring of materials offered for sale both at wholesale and retail level for compliance with standards is also desirable. For our part, APHCI will continue to support contractors and trades people and their interests in a proactive manner at all levels. We have recently relaunched our website and plan a regular podcast from early 2024: watch out for details. We work on a completely voluntary basis and need your help. Join up now if you have not already done so. Wishing you all the best for 2024, The APHCI team

H&A GROUP HAS REBRANDED TO REFLECT ITS DIVERSIFICATION OVER THE YEARS FROM BUILDING WORKS, KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS TO CYCLICAL MAINTENANCE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS… 30 years of taking pride in a job done right

A steady growth trajectory shows no signs of abating for H&A Group as it marks 30 years in business with a rebrand to reflect its expanding remit over the years. Initially focusing on the core discipline of mechanical services, the last three decades have seen the family business diversify into electrical, renewable energy and building maintenance services. Founded by Hugh and Anne McWilliams as H&A Mechanical Services in 1993, the firm has steadily built a client base ranging from private installations to social housing projects throughout Ireland, government schemes aimed at combating fuel poverty

and commercial/industrial work for blue chip companies. While offices have opened in Clane, Co Kildare, Mallusk, Co Antrim and the Pennyburn Industrial Estate, Co Derry to facilitate its expansion over the last 30 years, H&A retains its headquarters in Draperstown. The majority of its workforce operates from two sites in Draperstown, with smaller teams at the satellite offices and others largely on the road, working out of their vans. The team has expanded from six people in 1993 to more than 200 staff, but H&A remains a family firm with Carlus McWilliams assuming a leadership role alongside Martin Collins after Hugh died suddenly

from a heart attack in August 2020. “When my father passed away, it left a huge hole for us as a family and as a company,” said Carlus. “He was our go-to man and someone a lot of people looked up too. Daddy was a big supporter of the community and did a lot of work to support it. It’s something we try to carry on and pride ourselves on.” Indeed, H&A’s 30th anniversary celebrations this year have featured a series of fundraising events, including a Rampage mud run at The Jungle NI in May, golf day at Moyola Park in August and a family fun day at the Draperstown headquarters in September. A total of £30,000 was raised across the events and split between
