EB Gas Services, located in Newry, saw a 20% surge in productivity with BigChange’s mobile workforce system. This cloud-based solution improved job allocation and completion rates for its gas equipment services across Ireland and the UK. Implementing BigChange led to a 20% increase in routine service job allocation and a 30% boost in engineer efficiency using mobile devices linked to the back-office system. Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) apprentice Frank Moffit from Ballynacargy, took home the gold in the Jones Engineering sponsored Plumbing category of the Worldskills Ireland 2023 final. He won his competition under the mentorship of lecturer Shane Kelly, based on the Athlone Campus. The three-day event, held in September at the RDS Simmonscourt, Dublin, showcased the opportunities available for students looking to pursue a career in a skills-based job. Frank joined 160 students and apprentices to go head-to-head to compete for the prestigious DFHERIS Silver medal, alongside the chance to represent Ireland at Worldskills Lyon in 2024. The event hosted 24,000 students – a record amount– from schools across ROI. GRANT SWITCHES ITS FLEET OF VEHICLES FROM DIESEL TO HVO
Grant has recently made the move and transitioned several of its distribution lorries to be fuelled by renewable biofuel alternative hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), helping the company reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%.The announcement reinforces Grant’s commitment to a sustainable future and its continued focus on decarbonisation within its innovative heating technologies and operations. The move also supports the Government’s ambition to reduce transport carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.At present five, 18-tonne lorries are being fuelled by HVO biofuel as they deliver Grant home heating products to merchants throughout Ireland. With HVO biofuel a complete drop-in fuel replacement for diesel and kerosene, the lorries did not require any modifications to be made before the change to HVO biofuel. Niall Fay, CEO, Grant said, “Every mile our lorries travel fuelled by HVO biofuel will now have 90% less carbon emissions when compared to conventional diesel. The best thing of all is that HVO biofuel can also be used in home heating as a replacement biofuel for kerosene.” www.grant.ie

Pipelife Ireland recently welcomed 32 students from TU Dublin – Blanchardstown Campus to its cutting-edge Renewable Training Centre in Mulhuddart, Dublin 15, for an informative training programme. The sessions, led by Pipelife’s Technical Sales Manager, Mike Geary, spanned two weeks, divided into blocks of eight. Mike showcased Pipelife’s extensive range of home heating solutions, highlighting Hitachi & Midea air- to-water heat pumps, underfloor heating and heat recovery units. Denise Tuffy has been appointed Director of Specialist Contracting for the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), taking over the role vacated by Sean Downey. Her previous position as CIF’s Specialist Contracting Executive provided support to the Mechanical and Electrical Contractors Association (M&ECA) during which time she led M&ECA initiatives such as the formation of M&ECA Working Group on Apprenticeships and Recruitment. The M&ECA as an organisation, represents M&E contractors at government level to ensure their voice is heard. This task spans across a range of government departments and activities. Morgan Finney, a third-year plumbing apprentice at NRC Newtownabbey, has competed at the SkillPLUMB UK final at WorldSkills UK 2023. An employee of Hanna Mechanical Services in Carryduff, Morgan attended the event over November 14-17 at Oldham College in Greater Manchester. SkillPLUMB is an annual skills competition designed to promote standards and skills, developing competence into excellence. Talented young plumbers test their expertise in a series of challenging practical tests. Following an induction day, finalists competed over two days, with the final day of the event including a debrief, skills celebration and awards ceremony. Peter Lynch, Plumbing Lecturer at NRC Newtownabbey, congratulated Morgan on his selection. He also thanked Plumbmaster for its continued support in helping to provide an enriched apprenticeship curriculum, which allows both students and staff to keep up to date with current industry trends and changing technologies. Held at its Enniskillen training centre, the intensive one-day course combines theory and practical application to upskill participants in the fundamentals of heat loss and hydronics, alongside access to ongoing guidance and support as required. NEG8 Carbon, based in Waterford, has teamed up with Jones Engineering Manufacturing (JEM) to speed up the creation of a new Direct Air Capture (DAC) system. The partnership between NEG8 Carbon and JEM, an engineering company known for Integrated Modular Solutions, is a step towards combating climate change. Pivoting towards a low-carbon future
A s a busy 2023 draws to a close, we look forward to the years ahead with a sense of trepidation and excitement. The trade as we know it is undergoing a period of great change, probably the greatest since electricity became available to all. Yet all remains the same in that the basic underlying skills and craftsmanship of the trade remain unchanged. Yes, every day there are new designs of equipment and materials, but they are all intended to carry out the same basic functions as always, be it heating, cooling or transporting water, air or other fluids. They all have to be installed, jointed, secured and insulated in accordance with the current standards and manufacturers’ instructions; all based on the trade skills of old. Looking forward, we all must recognise that we all have to conserve energy and pivot towards the low carbon future where possible, and ensure all installations are as efficient as they can possibly be. Things like the old rule of thumb of watts per square metre or BTUs per cubic foot should have been long ago consigned to history and replaced with proper heat loss calculations. Energy sources, controls, zoning and
hot water storage need to be optimised for each installation and customer, while the correct attention to insulation is also required. In the case of pipework, the days of 9mm or 12mm wall foam pipe insulation, with open joints is long past. The minimum requirement is the correct thickness of insulation depending on pipe size and location with all joints sealed and all fittings properly insulated. Now more than ever, we all need to play our part in the success of our trade into the future. It is a team effort. Everyone needs to have pride in their work and resist the urge to sacrifice quality for speed. Our customers, large and small are putting their trust in us and spending their hard-earned money on an installation that they hope will last many years, if not their lifetime. They deserve the best. Suppliers need to ensure they stock only good quality materials and resist the lure of increased margins and cheaper prices offered by equipment of inferior quality. At national level, the powers that be need to resist the urge to reduce the training requirements for our apprentices. Our craftspeople are among the best trained and qualified in the world, and this pays dividends in the long run. However, they
do need to increase the availability of apprenticeship training for off-the-job phases, which is a serious issue at the moment. The availability of additional courses for those who wish to upskill also needs to be addressed. Monitoring of materials offered for sale both at wholesale and retail level for compliance with standards is also desirable. For our part, APHCI will continue to support contractors and trades people and their interests in a proactive manner at all levels. H&A GROUP HAS REBRANDED TO REFLECT ITS DIVERSIFICATION OVER THE YEARS FROM BUILDING WORKS, KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS TO CYCLICAL MAINTENANCE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS… 30 years of taking pride in a job done right
A steady growth trajectory shows no signs of abating for H&A Group as it marks 30 years in business with a rebrand to reflect its expanding remit over the years. Initially focusing on the core discipline of mechanical services, the last three decades have seen the family business diversify into electrical, renewable energy and building maintenance services. Founded by Hugh and Anne McWilliams as H&A Mechanical Services in 1993, the firm has steadily built a client base ranging from private installations to social housing projects throughout Ireland, government schemes aimed at combating fuel poverty
and commercial/industrial work for blue chip companies. While offices have opened in Clane, Co Kildare, Mallusk, Co Antrim and the Pennyburn Industrial Estate, Co Derry to facilitate its expansion over the last 30 years, H&A retains its headquarters in Draperstown. The majority of its workforce operates from two sites in Draperstown, with smaller teams at the satellite offices and others largely on the road, working out of their vans. The team has expanded from six people in 1993 to more than 200 staff, but H&A remains a family firm with Carlus McWilliams assuming a leadership role alongside Martin Collins after Hugh died suddenly
from a heart attack in August 2020. “When my father passed away, it left a huge hole for us as a family and as a company,” said Carlus. “He was our go-to man and someone a lot of people looked up too. Daddy was a big supporter of the community and did a lot of work to support it. It’s something we try to carry on and pride ourselves on.” Indeed, H&A’s 30th anniversary celebrations this year have featured a series of fundraising events, including a Rampage mud run at The Jungle NI in May, golf day at Moyola Park in August and a family fun day at the Draperstown headquarters in September. A total of £30,000 was raised across the events and split between

Air Ambulance Northern Ireland and Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke. With his family firm since 2012, Carlus has served as a director since 2016. Martin has been with H&A since its inception, starting out as a plumber but quickly progressing up the ranks as the firm grew. “Martin has played a huge part in H&A over last 30 years,” said Carlus. “He has been with the business from the start as a plumber and worked his way up through the company to become a senior manager. He has now been a director for over 17 years. “One of H&A’s strengths is we have a really good senior management team and group employees who all strive to do the best job they can.” The 30th anniversary rebrand, in March, represented a significant investment by the firm, including new uniforms for its workforce, signage across its locations and decals for its fleet of more than 100 vans. “We are always investing in the
company, be that new vehicles, plant or equipment,” said Carlus. “It is ever moving. “As a family-run company, we have a strong personal stake in every project we undertake, so we take pride in a job done right. “The ‘getting it right first time’ approach is a fundamental approach to our business.
