Future Proofing Aptus Mental Health Moment

Welcome... to the latest edition of Connections.

In this issue, we shine a spotlight on apprenticeships, with our people director Natasha Clarke outlining the many benefits of recruiting apprentices and the vital role they play at Aptus. In my team we recently welcomed two apprentices who have quickly made their mark and become an integral part of how business development functions. On page 9 we speak to Chloe Amstrong , who started her career with us as an apprentice seven years ago and is now managing a team in her role of gas administration supervisor. This issue also features an overview of our experience in handling projects that have been novated following a business deciding to withdraw from the multi utility sector. Aptus is adept at taking on and completing such projects and we always welcome discussions about how we could work together. As well as the latest news from our business, this edition also features a piece focusing on women in construction. Although the number of women working in construction is increasing, there is still a way to go, and at Aptus we’re always working to change perceptions and showcase the many rewarding roles available in our sector. As always, we’d love to know if there’s anything you’d like to see included in future editions of Connections.

Best wishes Dan Owen Business Development Director

VIEW P INT For more than ten years, Aptus has been committed to recruiting and developing apprentices, establishing an Aptus Academy and offering a wider range of programmes than ever before. In this edition, our people director Natasha Clarke discusses how apprenticeships are helping to address skills shortages.

WHY CONSIDER APPRENTICESHIPS I’d encourage all businesses to consider apprenticeships. One of the key advantages is that their skills can be developed according to the needs of your particular business, so even if you’re recruiting into a niche role, training providers may well be able to tailor their programmes to suit your exact requirements. They’re an excellent way to grow talent from within and we’ve found that many have remained extremely loyal, staying with us for a number of years following their training. INTEGRAL TO OUR BUSINESS It’s great to see that the number of companies taking on apprentices is on the increase. For Aptus, they have become integral to our business and are a key part of our recruitment strategy. If you’re considering taking on an apprentice for the first time, my advice would be, go for it!

Figures for the 2023/24 academic year show that apprenticeship starts in England were up 7% compared to the previous year, with under 19s accounting for 32.7%. This is a positive trend and one that is in line with the growth of our own scheme. Over the past decade our apprenticeship programme has grown and grown and now encompasses everything from finance, business administration and multi-utility, to HR and warehousing. ADDRESSING THE SKILLS GAP It’s been widely reported that there is a skills gap in the utilities industry, and apprenticeships can help address this. They are an excellent way to encourage people to gain qualifications and begin careers in industries where we need them most. As an employer, taking on apprentices is hugely rewarding. It’s great to see people embarking on their first steps on the career ladder, with this often coinciding with many other significant life events, such as passing driving tests and gaining further qualifications. BENEFITS TO WIDER TEAM For our other team members, welcoming a new cohort of apprentices is always an exciting time and there’s a real buzz in the office. Day to day, they bring opportunities for others to supervise and mentor, developing their careers, too.

COMPANY ROUND UP

Safety Stand Down is a key date in the Aptus calendar and we kicked off 2024 with events in Bolton, Newcastle and Cannock. The event gathers our 300+ workforce together to hear an update from the directors on the company’s performance and ambitions for the year ahead. Health & Safety is top of the agenda and as well as looking at our performance over the previous year, colleagues are invited to share ideas for safety improvements. We hope that by reinforcing messages around health and safety we can continue to drive our high standards. Driving is one of the most high-risk activities our employees undertake, so we invited Road Risk Consultant, Andrew Drewary from Road Safety Smart, to deliver driver awareness training. He was joined by Specialist Criminal & Road Regulatory Lawyer, Charlotte Le Maire, from LMP Legal. The presentation included an interactive element in which audience members were invited to wear a virtual reality headset which simulates the effects of being under the influence of alcohol. This was an effective aid in showing how alcohol negatively affects our perceptions and ability to perform simple tasks.

With around 200 vehicles in our fleet the session was an informative and engaging way to raise awareness of the risks our drivers face and their legal rights. We were delighted to see so many of the team participating in the interactive activities at the North West event and look forward to rolling the training out to all our depots.

Aptus App launches

We are thrilled to launch our new Aptus Employee App! The user-friendly, employee-only app brings together employer information on one platform, giving colleagues access to a wealth of information.

The platform also allows two-way communication in several areas, including allowing employees to make suggestions for improvements and nominating colleagues for recognition. We have received positive feedback so far and will continue to look at ways we can develop the app to support our business needs in future.

COMPANY ROUND UP National Apprenticeship Week

We take every opportunity to celebrate our amazing apprentices and they had the spotlight once again during National Apprenticeship Week! More than 70 apprentices have joined us on a variety of apprenticeships since 2012, and we are proud to have supported their career development. Last year we added T Level Industry Placements to our training offer and have been impressed by the results. During the week we took to social media to share our apprenticeship stories and highlight the success of our T Level students - you can read more about this on pages 10 and 11. As members of The 5% Club, we are continually exploring ways to support skills development in our industry and through Aptus Academy, which is spearheaded by our people director Natasha Clarke . During NAW2024 Natasha attended an Apprenticeship Employer Breakfast Event hosted by the University of Bolton. The event included a discussion on how employers can utilise the Apprenticeship Levy to generate their pipeline of talent and featured guest speakers from the Co-op and Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.

The event underlined the collective commitment from the educational sector, national organisations and local industry to drive the adoption of apprenticeships by employers which will address potential skills crises by ensuring the development of future talent.

Blue bin donations support record year at Cash for Kids

toy donation and fundraising campaign, which our colleagues generously donate to each year. To support the charity’s amazing work, we are encouraging people to bring their unwanted clothes and accessories to our recycling bank where clothing that’s good enough to be reused will go to help people who are living in poverty, and anything else will be recycled to be used in carpet underlay, insulation or fuel to generate electricity. To find your nearest Cash for Kids recycling bank or to apply to become a host, visit: https://

Supporting our local community and doing what we can to protect the environment are important to Aptus, so in Greater Manchester where our head office is based, we are pleased to have played a small part in helping both through our Cash for Kids recycling bank, which saw 910kg of clothing diverted from landfill and raised £263.50 for the charity in 2023. The charity makes a vital difference to children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds or living with an illness or disability, as well as providing a lifeline to many organisations and community groups by funding essential services and life-changing equipment. According to their reports, 2023 was a record- breaking year as Cash for Kids raised £23.7 million across the UK and helped 583,957 children. This includes their Mission Christmas

Q: Why did you join the Aptus Academy? A: I was looking to improve my knowledge, albeit later in my career than most who joined the academy, and saw it as a good opportunity to progress. Q: What would you say to someone considering joining the Aptus Academy? A: I would highly recommend joining as Aptus is a company that always puts your best interests first. No stone is left unturned, and the highest quality training is provided. Q: Tell us about the journey you’ve gone on at Aptus? A: I initially started at Aptus ten years ago as a pressure tester/chlorinator. The function was originally outsourced but I built it up over a period of two years and also helped to train three members of staff. It was a successful department which I was proud to have overseen. Following this however I felt like I needed a change and became a trainee water designer – a completely different path to the one I’d started down! After that I qualified as a water designer before being appointed as a team leader in the Midlands. The changes didn’t end there What I’ve Learnt In each edition of Connections, we catch up with a member of the team to learn more about their experiences at Aptus and find out what they’ve learnt along the way. Here we speak to regional design manager, Liam Pearson , who joined Aptus in 2014 and will be celebrating ten years with the company in April. Liam was also enrolled into Aptus Academy when it launched in 2022.

though, as following a restructure in the design department, I became design manager for region 2 in the North West. It’s been a great journey so far. Q: What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry? A: I’d say it’s really important to be open-minded when approaching all utilities and to try and take in as much information as possible from all aspects of the business. From estimating all the way through to operations and understanding the processes involved, it’s really helpful to keep learning. Q: What are your aims and objectives for the next ten years? A: To help Aptus grow within the industry and be a part of the company’s expansion across the country. I’m also passionate about helping to further improve the processes within the water sector, in-line with the latest needs of the industry. Q: And finally, what do you enjoy doing outside of work? A: I have two daughters – aged two and six – who I love spending time with along with my fiancée. I also regularly watch Preston North End and enjoy going to the gym.

It’s Gold again for Aptus Aptus wins RoSPA Gold Medal after securing fifth consecutive Gold for health and safety. We are proud to have maintained our outstanding safety record by achieving a Gold Medal in the internationally renowned Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) awards. The award celebrates the company’s fifth consecutive Gold Achievement Award following assessment of our health and safety performance in 2023. Entering the awards demonstrates to our workforce and customers that the welfare and safety of people is at the forefront of our business and allows Aptus to benchmark safety performance year on year, ensuring consistency across all our sites and offices. The award looks at all aspects of health and safety, from strategy, communication and training to the processes we have in place to ensure our workforce is fully competent to fulfil their roles. Ongoing education around raising awareness of physical health and wellbeing, mental health, driver safety and other essential areas also ensures that our efforts to support employees and their families extends well beyond the workplace. A huge amount of work has gone into maintaining our RoSPA gold status over the last five years. Since 2020, our comprehensive Health and Safety Strategy has transformed the way we lead and deliver our Health, Safety, Quality and Environment (HSQE) programme. We have also established dedicated Safety Committees which have strengthened engagement with our HSQE programme and initiatives, and encouraged new ideas and suggestions to improve our processes, procedures and performance. We are delighted to have rewarded several colleagues through our Recognition and Rewards Scheme, which celebrates individual contributions to health and safety.

As part of our efforts to promote best practice we regularly share our health and safety learnings among our colleagues and contractor partners, and each year have a company-wide safety stand-down which is an opportunity to reinforce everyone’s role in our HSQE programme. We are honoured to be part of the global RoSPA community who are dedicated to shaping safer, healthier workplaces and keeping people safe from accidental harm and injury. A massive thank you to our HSQE department for their leadership and to our whole team for their continued commitment to deliver our high standards. HSQE manager, Delicia Maxwell, said:

Congratulations to the whole team on achieving the RoSPA Gold Medal, which demonstrates the fantastic engagement and participation in our Safety Values across our organisation. “Health and Safety is at the heart of our business and we will continue to focus on ways we can promote our Aptus Safety Values within our culture to drive improvement and reward our colleagues for positive safety behaviour.

A spotlight on Novation Novation is the term used when a company transfers a project to another provider before it completes – either because it has gone out of business, decided to exit the market or there is mutual cancellation. In this edition of Connections our business development director, Dan Owen , discusses novation in more detail and outlines why Aptus is perfectly placed to take over projects when a company can no longer fulfil requirements. Recently, Aptus has noticed a growing number of novation agreements taking place when a project is transferred to another company. With more and more Independent Connection Providers entering the market, without correct due diligence when appointing contractors, problems can often arise as a project develops. Here at Aptus, we have the skills and experience to step in if a contract is being novated, having completed a range of novations comprising hundreds of developments and thousands of connections – we have been approached directly or via recommendation from network operators based on our credentials and reputation. A STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS Early engagement is key, allowing us to assess what is required and provide a clear strategy for the next steps. From there we endeavour to gain a thorough understanding of the scheme overall, engage with the Distribution Network Operator and the adopting IDNO for full transparency, review approved and as laid drawings, and provide a full ‘cost to complete’ proposal based on the requirements to complete the scheme. We have a proven track record of doing this and are proud to have been chosen by multiple companies to successfully novate a range of contracts. TRUSTED PARTNER We were contacted directly by Western Power Distribution (WDP) when they were undergoing a controlled exit from the multi-utility market.

Although the project comprised dozens of existing developments of varying scope, we were able to provide a seamless resolution for WPD’s customers in a timely and professional manner. Aptus has also completed over 50 schemes for Clancy Docwra too, highlighting our credentials to successfully novate projects as a trusted Positively, and thanks to the expertise we have demonstrated when novating projects so far, we have further novation schemes in the pipeline. Although it can be a challenging and disruptive time when a provider can no longer fulfill their obligations, rest assured that Aptus is on hand to help companies finish projects on-time and to the highest standards. Getting to know you

Chloe Armstrong joined Aptus in 2016 on a business administration apprenticeship through Bolton based independent training provider, Alliance Learning. Chloe was placed within the operations administration team, responsible for ordering plant, equipment and other materials for site, along with other duties. Today, Chloe is a gas administration supervisor, and this year she celebrates eight years with Aptus. Here, we talk to her about her role and some of her career highlights to date.

Q: Talk us through a typical day A: A typical day consists of overseeing all the tasks we undertake in the gas admin team which are booking in gas connections for all regions, writing the procedures for the gas connections on site, and auditing the completion packs we get back in from the teams and engineers once the gas connections have been completed. There are four of us in the team who undertake all these roles and we are all cross trained as we like to change things up and help and support each other as and when we can. My typical day also consists of providing support and guidance and any training that is required to get the best out of my team. Q: You’ve been at Aptus for seven years now – what has been your career highlight? A: My career highlight so far is getting the role I am currently in. As an apprentice I started off as an admin assistant ordering all the materials and plant needed on site. After I came back from maternity leave, I saw a job opening within the gas technical admin team and thought a change would be good for me to learn new skills and further my knowledge in the utility industry. I started in the gas technical team as an admin assistant and in 2022, became the gas administration supervisor within the gas technical team. I have never looked back since. I love my job and am excited to see where it takes me in the future!

Q: What would you say to anyone considering undertaking an apprenticeship? A: To anyone who is thinking about starting an apprenticeship, I would 100% recommend going down this route. Learning while you earn is so beneficial as it motivates you to work hard and gives you some independence too! Q: Finally, what do you enjoy doing outside of work? A: Outside work I love to spend time with my family (partner, six-year-old daughter and our Cocker Spaniel Rosie). We love to go on days out, out for nice meals and long walks when the weather lets us!

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2024 International Women’s Day on 8 March provided a great opportunity to showcase the talented women who make up our diverse multi-utility construction business and show our appreciation. The campaign theme for 2024, #InspireInclusion, provides an ideal platform for us to talk about the action we are taking to promote careers and encourage women into our industry.

20% of our workforce are women and during the year our numbers increased by 6% 14% of Group Board roles are held by women 43% of Executive Team roles were held by women 29% of our apprentice intake were women 36% of those on individual learning plans are women

The growing number of women in construction: – now at its highest since official records began – is encouraging, yet women still only account for 15 per cent of the workforce . Multi-utility services also remain largely male dominated, but we are working hard to change perceptions and show that there are rewarding roles for women. We are pleased to be making progress too, with our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report showing that in 2022/2023 we increased female representation to 20 per cent across our business, which is a rise of 6 per cent .

Women also occupy influential roles, including our two female directors who serve as fantastic role models for any women that are considering joining our team. Looking to the future, nearly one third of our apprentices are female, signalling our commitment to attract young women to start their careers with Aptus.

10 APTUS CONNECTIONS // ISSUE 16

The Lighthouse Club Construction Industry Charity were also active during the first week of March, promoting Women in Construction Week. The annual campaign raises awareness about the achievements of women in construction roles and advocates for equal opportunities within the industry. More information on the campaign and how your organisation can support Women in Construction is at www.constructionindustryhelpline.com/ women-in-construction-week.html In Connections we regularly shine a light on our female talent by featuring articles, interviews, and expert insights from our project managers, engineers, designers and other skilled teammates. In this issue we are proud to introduce Chloe Armstrong , a former apprentice who now has a lead role within our gas team – you’ll have read more about her story on page 9. By giving visibility to all those who contribute to our success, we hope to inspire more women into our industry. Our commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) sets out our ambitions to shape a more diverse and inclusive future for people and businesses in our sector, which you can find here .

Natasha Clarke , people director, commented:

International Women’s Day is a day to take stock and reflect on achievements towards gender parity across the board. Whilst female talent must be nurtured throughout the year, IWD is another way to shine a spotlight on positive female role models doing brilliant things so that those new to the industry are inspired and can see a clear, achievable career path. As a business with a female managing director, this is especially important. Change is happening in the utilities and construction sector but there’s still a way to go and that’s why it’s so important to Inspire Inclusion. We’re set to face huge talent shortages in the next decade, and encouraging more female talent is one way to address this. Raising awareness of the huge range of career opportunities is essential in making females feel included.

This year, almost 30 per cent of Aptus Academy candidates are female, studying for apprenticeships and qualifications covering everything from utility design and business administration to project management. We’d like to see this grow even more in the years to come. We still have work to do to encourage and support more women in site-based roles but we’re moving in the right direction.

Future-proofing Aptus: Apprenticeships and career pathways

As a leading employer in the utility industry, it is essential that we offer attractive training and professional development opportunities to meet the diverse needs of our workforce. From award-winning apprenticeships to career support for colleagues ambitious to progress, our multi-faceted learning pathways allow us to build a business for the future which is equipped to adapt within a constantly evolving sector. We are proud of our apprenticeships and the pipeline of talent they have produced. With more than 70 apprentices recruited in business administration, finance, multi-utility, warehousing and other key roles, they have been critical to our success. By designing clear career pathways and supporting our apprentices to learn a variety of skills across different areas of the business, we are helping to develop a generation of young professionals trained in innovative areas of technology and modern construction processes. Take our business administration apprentice Georgia who works in our street lighting team. In this environment she is able to acquire the practical office experience that will lead to an NVQ qualification, and at the same time she is gaining valuable insight into a highly technical area, learning directly from more experienced colleagues. Georgia is loving her apprenticeship and says it has allowed her to gain experience “ you could only obtain in the workplace ”. She is enjoying learning more about streetlighting and already has her eye on progression. “I would love to become a manager in a career I am passionate and knowledgeable about. Right now, I am enjoying the street lighting path and learning CAD, and would like to progress in these. ”

Last year apprentice Leo joined the estimating department and is thoroughly enjoying his experience. Leo is also focused on progression and says his business administration apprenticeship “ has opened up different career options that I didn’t even realise would be possible to achieve due to the variety of topics [it] covers and the number of transferrable skills I learn. ” He adds, “ hopefully one day I’ll have the title ‘Lead Estimator’ next to my name! ” On the other side of this story is lead estimator Eleanor who nearly ten years ago was in Leo’s position and has progressed to become one of our most valuable assets. Recently awarded a promotion to lead business development in one of our key growth regions, Eleanor’s achievement shows the level of support apprentices will receive at Aptus if they have the right attributes, passion and commitment to learn and progress. You can read more about our apprentices’ journeys with Aptus here .

It’s not all about Apprentices! Apprenticeships aren’t the only route to a rewarding career with Aptus. We have taken on trainees in project management, utility network design, cable jointing, human resources, and quantity surveying, as well as warehouse operatives, water technicians, and more. Along with signing up to The 5% Club, the launch of Aptus Academy in 2022 tester in 2014 before training as a water design engineer and progressing to design team leader. His training has continued throughout his career with Aptus and after completing an HNC in Civil Engineering, Liam graduated from Aptus Academy and has recently been rewarded for his commitment with a further promotion to regional design manager. If you want to know more about Liam’s career journey you can catch up with him on page 6. T Levels success T Levels are one of the recent training standards to emerge and we embraced this new learning opportunity by offering industry placements to two engineering students from Bolton College. These have been a great success, and we were delighted to offer Tom Daly a position within our CAD department when he has completed his T Level in Mechanical Engineering - congratulations Tom! If you are interested in exploring careers and apprenticeships with Aptus, visit https://aptusutilities.co.uk/careers . formalised our commitment to supporting our colleagues on different learning pathways. Inclusive and rewarding

One of our mottos as an employer is to be inclusive and rewarding, and all our colleagues can be assured that they will be offered support in their professional development at every stage of their career. A case in point is our project development manager John Goulding who will soon achieve his 10-years’ service with Aptus. John has advanced through roles as a multi-utility supervisor into project management, to a senior role in which he oversees the delivery of an extensive portfolio of contracts for our clients in the North West. John’s tremendous commitment and ambition have been continually recognised and rewarded by Aptus and he recently embarked on an ILM Level 5 Leadership and Management course. This forms part of training Aptus has been rolling

out to senior managers to

ensure our team are equipped to support the future business growth. John’s son Ethan is another outstanding example of our successful apprenticeship Ethan qualified as a multi-utility operative with distinction in 2021 and is keen to follow in his dad’s footsteps. With the feedback we have received on Ethan so far, he is clearly one to watch! recruitment programme.

Corporate challenge launched to BOOST mental health and wellbeing In our Mental Health Moment, we regularly talk about the connection between physical health and mental health – to support this we set up a Race At Your Pace Corporate Challenge and invited colleagues to walk, run, or cycle 3,000 miles in 29 days.

Thirty-seven team members joined in the February wellbeing challenge. They set personal exercise goals which included to improve their health, to train for various sporting and fundraising events, and as motivation to get outdoors in winter. The competition featured some impressive performances including our North East regional manager Stephen Chesworth , who finished top of the cycling category after clocking up more than 550 miles!

The corporate challenge went down well with our team, and it was great to see people spur each other on to smash our group target by travelling nearly 4,500 miles . The feedback shows that more than 90% of those who took part reported improvements in mental health and physical wellbeing. We hope everyone has been inspired to keep going! As an additional incentive, Race At Your Pace offer to plant a tree for everyone who enters the challenge – we were delighted to receive a certificate confirming the planting of 39 trees in Canada following the event.

We had 10 walkers who each racked up over 100 miles . Among them was Karen

from our Yorkshire depot who averaged more than 8 miles a day, trekking 241 miles overall.

Top of our runners’ leaderboard was water design engineer Lewis Higham , who added an impressive 193 miles to the total during his preparation for a half- marathon in May.

14 APTUS CONNECTIONS // ISSUE 16

It was interesting, and I enjoyed that we completed tasks during the presentation - it prompted more people to pay attention in order to execute the tasks at hand. Very informative and quite eye- opening as to the damage the lack of exercise can have on the body and it was interesting to work out my BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate).

At our Academy workshop in February, we continued the wellbeing theme and invited personal trainer Ryan Maksymow to speak to members about health, fitness and diet. Ryan is a quantity surveyor at Aptus and is also a qualified personal trainer. During the session Ryan focused on what he refers to as the ‘ Pillars of Health ’, covering sleep, diet, hydration, and exercise. Ryan had a fantastic approach, incorporating practical tasks into the talk and ensuring everyone remained engaged throughout the session. Ryan shared a wealth of interesting statistics and the group left armed with some practical ways to look after their physical health.

It was eye-opening and inspired me to be more motivated.

The Mental Health Foundation says that physical activity is a great way to improve our mental wellbeing. They suggest that even 10 minutes’ brisk walking can improve our mental alertness, energy and mood. For more information visit www.mentalhealth.org.uk/explore-mental- health/a-z-topics/physical-health-and-mental- health Corporate challenges can promote team bonding, boost wellbeing and inject fun into the workplace. For more inspiration visit www. raceatyourpace. co.uk/ corporate- fitness- challenge- ideas

We were delighted to receive excellent feedback on Ryan’s session, with comments including:

Brilliant, a really good speaker - you could tell a lot of effort went into it. Really got me thinking I need to start doing something about my physical health.
