In 2024, I am excited to announce that our College will introduce a Learning Coach Program based on our focus of explicit learning, student goal setting and reflection. This will replace the current Home Group system. The role of the Learning Coach will primarily be to gather, interpret and communicate student academic and wellbeing data on a regular basis directly to students in order to improve their individual learning growth and achievement.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT

MEET AND GREET DAY – JANUARY 30, 2024

ROLE OF THE LEARNING COACH

The Meet and Greet session will begin this journey of developing student goals and targets. Goals set will be both academic and wellbeing focussed. The Learning Coach will be the classroom teacher on the Primary Campus. On the Secondary Campus, this role will be allocated based on a system where students and teachers can develop authentic relationships based on learning advocacy needs. This change will mean that the Learning Coaches will be the FIRST POINT OF CONTACT for all students, parents/ carers on ALL student related issues including learning progress and wellbeing matters.

A Learning Coach is a and a motivator who helps to further stimulate learning and establish a suitable structure for the school day. guide, a supporter, Coaching may be described as a process that aims to enhance performance and place emphasis on learning in the ″ now ″ rather than the past or the uncertain future . The primary goal of education is to impart new information and abilities to students. The primary goals of coaching are the enhancement and expansion of one ’ s knowledge and abilities through an emphasis on learner growth. The goal of Learning Coaches at The Lakes is to support all students to have agency over their learning to enable them to grow and achieve whilst having the ongoing support of a trusted adult who is deeply knowledgeable about the student as both a person and a learner. The successful implementation of the DET Tutor Learning Program and the Year 10 Middle Years Literacy and Numeracy Initiative are also drivers of this adaptation for changes to our operations.

The expectation will be that both parents/carers and students attend the session either in person or online.

PARENT/CARER–TEACHER INTERVIEWS 2023 / STUDENT AGENCY DAYS 2024 As our College implements our goal of ‘ High Expectations ’ for all learners, we will be renaming Parent/Carer - Teacher Interviews to ‘ Student Agency Days ’. These interviews will be data driven, with both the student and Learning Coach sharing progress on academic assessment results and work dispositions: attitude, effort, attendance/punctuality and collaboration. Students will be required to attend and lead these discussions about themselves as learners as we build genuine student agency and capacity to take ownership of their learning and educational aspirations. SCHOOL PRIDE – WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2024 I am pleased to report that works continue in the refurbishment of College facilities. The Prep - Year 1 toilets are nearing completion. The Year 6 portable and the Secondary PD room has had a new air conditioning installed and new carpeting across the remainder of the learning street will be installed over the next holiday period. We are erecting new signage at the front of both Campuses, and are excited with the upcoming installation of the new synthetic basketball court on Primary. On the Secondary Campus, we are in the process of finishing our student locker upgrades and installing new fencing across Jardier Tce. Thank you to our wonderful School Councillors for their amazing volunteer work and assistance to the upgrades.

The key aspect of the role will be to:

1. Gather data from a range of school - based and official DET sources in order to create a clear understanding of each learner and their ongoing needs. 2. Regularly communicate this information with students and parents/carers to enhance transparent and on time communications and feedback beyond scheduled meetings.

COLLEGE LEADERSHIP SUPPORT

The Learning Coach Program will be led by our three newly appointed Learning Specialists on both campuses. They will be supported by two Leading Teachers for Teaching & Learning and a manager for Data Achievement across the College. Additional middle managers on both campuses will be appointed to work with the Learning Coaches, support staff, students and parents/carers. In 2023, we have contracted the highly respected educator, Dr Jane - Louise Collins from Ed Partnerships to introduce our College community to the concept of Learning Coaches and set up structures and processes that will enable us to create the vehicle that markedly improves student performance.

Beginning next year, our College will implement a refined protocol for School Pride focussed on professional appearance. Front office administration and PE staff will wear College uniforms, and teaching staff will adhere to a minimum dress code. Furthermore, in line with our community expectations, we will transition towards addressing our educators and school personnel by their surnames. This symbolic change serves as a symbol of our commitment to fostering a professional environment. It underscores the importance of positive working relationships between students, families and teachers while emphasising the distinction that exists between the two, reinforcing the notion that a professional and respectful relationship is paramount. Structurally, our facility enhancements are in line with the transition to a Primary and Secondary College framework. This transition has resulted in a reduction in team - teaching and a greater emphasis on individual subject instruction. As a result, we have introduced sound - reducing partitions to foster a more conducive learning environment. Furthermore, we have championed and made substantial investments in comprehensive professional development programs for our educators and support staff, with the primary goal of promoting ongoing learner growth, engagement, and the facilitation of excellence in specialised subject areas and leadership roles throughout the College. Additionally, we have elevated our student leadership programs, designed to shape the ethos of student collaboration, amplify their voices, and empower authentic agency, setting the stage for a harmonious and purposeful learning environment. 2024 will be very exciting for our students, staff and our College. Our commitment to deliver on our four pillars: Academic Rigour, High Expectation, Positive Culture for Change and School Pride are the keys to our success and we will deliver with fidelity and purpose. Together with School Council and your important support as parents/ carers, we are on this journey together!

Stay safe and enjoy the Cup weekend!

VICTORIAN CODING CHALLENGE CADE, DUNCAN, TRE & JAGGER YEAR 5 & 6 STUDENTS

On Tuesday the 31st of October, a team of seven Year 5 and 6 students went to St Oliver ’ s Primary School in Pascoe Vale, to compete in the second stage of the Victorian Coding Challenge for 2023. We competed in a variety of different coding challenges against other schools. We started with a Halloween themed mathematical challenge which we did in our teams. Then we opened our laptops and completed a series of Scratch coding challenges. After lunch and a play on the playground, we used a barcode scanner to crack a code and had another Scratch challenge, called The Elevator.

“ The best part was the Scratch challenge because it had a variety of different kinds of problems, so everyone could contribute in it and it challenged my thinking of code. ” Cade

“ My favourite part was the Elevator challenge because you had to code to make it hold more people and also make it faster. ” Tre

“ I loved the yummy food, the challenges, playing in the playground and having fun with friends! ” Jagger

“ I enjoyed solving all the problems they gave to us. ” Duncan

Thankyou to Kitty and Emily for taking us to such a great experience. We hope to go again next year!

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter CURRICULUM

The nature of Mathematics has changed over the years, today students are taught to understand patterns, concepts about place value and problem - solving strategies. Students are encouraged to take risks, learn from their mistakes and come up with several solutions to a problem. They are also asked to provide reasons and evidence as to why their answers are correct. Gone are the days of rote learning and drills - based maths tasks. HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD AT HOME? HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH MATHEMATICS AT HOME

Expose your child to a wide variety of mathematical experiences at home such as cooking, counting objects, analysing shapes, estimating time, reading clocks, talking about the seasons, months of the year.

Praise effort and try not to criticise errors.

Encourage your child to show you how they worked out a problem. For example, you could ask your child, ‘ How did you figure that out? ’ or ‘ Is there another way to figure this out? ’ You could both do the same maths problem and compare how you worked out the answer. When shopping, observe prices, discuss rounding to the nearest dollar, ask the child to compare prices or to “ get the 2 L pack or the 500 g box ”.

Discuss the dollar sign $, decimal point, % sign, ½ price sales etc.

Encourage your child to identify coins, notes and make different amounts – e.g. What coins can we use to make $1 for Zooper Doopers?

Do lots of measuring (spacing seedlings 30 cm apart), estimating lengths, half a cup etc.

Encourage your child to play Card games to learn basic number facts, monopoly, snakes and ladders, share items equally, estimate length, height and weight of objects.

Ask about the maths topics your child is learning at school and talk about how maths can help with everyday activities.

• Support your child to practise counting by a variety of numbers to support their development of counting and times tables knowledge.

• Encourage your child to try different ways to solve maths problems, especially when they get the wrong answer. Learning maths isn ’ t just about finding the right answer – it ’ s also about learning different ways to solve problems.

Your feelings about maths influence how your child thinks about maths. Even if you ’ ve grown up thinking that you ’ re not very good at maths, you can show your child that you appreciate how maths helps you to do everyday activities and things that you enjoy – for example, cooking, sports and playing card games.

FREE LITTLE ANGLERS KIT FOR YEAR 5 STUDENTS

The Victorian Government is investing $1.5 million from the Recreational Fishing Licence Trust Fund to provide up to 95,000 Little Angler Kits to Primary school aged children in Victoria. The free kits provide a wonderful school holiday activity for children with their families and help ease the cost of living, providing a fun activity close to home. Year 5 students at all Victorian schools, including ours, will be offered the opportunity to receive a FREE Little Angler Kit. Year 5 students have been selected based on the Victorian Curriculum focus, movement and motor development, and safety considerations. The program is entirely voluntary. Parents/carers of Year 5 students can advise the school if they do not wish their child/ren to participate for any reason whatsoever. We support parents/carers in making decisions that align with their family values and beliefs.

The roll out of kits will occur through the second half of 2023 (16 October - 4 December) so that all participating children will have a kit in time for the summer school holidays.

The kits include a rod, reel with line, tackle tray, some tackle and information on how to use them to catch a fish. Please note that the tackle tray includes fishing hooks. The tackle tray will be wrapped in cardboard and placed inside a pocket inside the fishing kit bag, which will be sealed with a cable tie to discourage students from opening their kits until they are with a parent or carer. Kits will be handed out to students to take home with them as soon as the school receives them. Teachers will tell students not to open the kits until they are safely at home with a parent or carer, however parents/carers can contact the school and request to collect their kit from the school themselves if they prefer. The Victorian Fisheries Authority will create a Little Angler hub on their website, which will be live when the kits start being distributed. It will have useful information, instructional videos and online resources about where and how to fish linking to existing resources from Fishcare and new resources to be produced just for the Little Angler Kits program. This initiative aims to grow recreational fishing participation in Victoria by actively encouraging primary school aged children to learn how to fish, as well as learning more about marine life and the natural environment.

Please advice the office if you DO NOT wish for your child to receive the Free Little Anglers Kit.
