said Steven Roberts, President. “The last five years we’ve averaged about 20 percent growth a year and folding carton has been a big part of that. Up until 2020 our commercial side of the business seemed to be growing as well. With COVID we’ve still continued to grow, but it has been heavily folding carton.” Even before the global pandemic, Roberts recognized an opportuni- ty to diversify capabilities by investing in an MGI JETvarnish 3D digital embellishment press from Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. and a PPCTS DGM Smartfold 1100SL Ultra X2S folder-gluer. Both machines were installed last year. These purchases were part of a bigger plan to expand the business and gain a competitive advantage, especially in folding cartons. “There was definitely a strategy. Being a finishing company I need to be able to do everything that my commercial, folding carton and envelope ac- counts can’t do,” Roberts explained. Corrugated Industry Recognizes 416 Plants For Safety Achievements The Fibre Box Association (FBA) and AICC – The Indepen- dent Packaging Association will recognize 416 corrugated industry plants for safety achievements in 2020. Safety Awards are given based on data compiled for the recently released 2020 Corrugated Container Industry Annual Report of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses. Participants appreciate the ability to recognize their plants’ dedication to safety. “This is very meaningful to our teams,” one award winner wrote. For the calendar year 2020, the associations will pres- ent 151 Perfect Plant Awards to plants achieving zero in- cidents. An additional 265 facilities will receive Safety Excellence Awards for achieving no lost workdays due to job-related injury or illness. The report provides detailed data for more than 169 million hours worked at 723 participating plants. It also in- cludes trend information presented in graphs for record- able cases, restricted duty cases, and days away from work. Award winners are presented as a percentage of total plant participation and the Safety Award Winners page serves as a great summary of achievement including a count of winners by category, number of Perfect Plant Awards, number of Safety Excellence Awards, total awards given, and the percentage of plants awarded.

Participation in the report was voluntary and open to all corrugator or sheet plant facilities manufacturing corrugat- ed products. Participants can view the full report on either of the association’s websites, www.fibrebox.org or www. aiccbox.org . 40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE

Design & Production

Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate

Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.

This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.

The system’s main advantages are as follows:

• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”

6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

It offers a wide range of set- tings. The loadi g pressure can be varied, the number of shoes can be lifted in accordance t the line speed. The outer shoes can be lifted in accordance to the paper width. The shoe bars will be delivered pre-assembled for a short installation time. —Liftable for easy paper infeed and for cleaning of the machine —Position adjustable in paper direction to avoid grooves in hotplate Press Productivity Issue—Poor Heat Transfer Rollers are usually limiting the heat transfer, since they often have contact mainly on the edges of the plates due to wear or bent plates. They also cause often loss of caliper and bearing need to be replaced frequently. Airpressure actuated systems can only supply a limited pressure and have com- pared to shoe systems a closed surface. Pressure Shoe

Rondo-Pak Continues To Expand Through Equipment Investments

Rondo-Pak, LLC, a provider of folding cartons and printed components for the pharmaceutical, medical device and consumer industries, has continued to enhance its capabilities and expand capacity at its primary facilities in Camden, New Jersey and San Juan, Puerto Rico, through extensive equipment investments. The latest additions will allow Ron- do-Pak to meet the heightened market demand for specialized packag- ing, which has been accelerated by a need for COVID-19 related prod- ucts including vaccines, adjuvants, test kits, pain relievers and treatment medications. The newly-added equipment is highlighted by a Heidelberg 10-color Offset Press, which is scheduled for installation to begin in the second quarter of this year. Capable of production speeds of 18,000 sheets per hour in straight printing or perfecting mode, as well as continuous pro- cess optimization through artificial intelligence, the machine will allow Rondo-Pak to increase capacity to meet the continually expanding de- mand, said the company. The company has also added a Xerox Versant 4100 Press. A press with smart automation for virtually touch-free quality control, the ma- chine is reportedly capable of printing 100 pages per minute, allowing for fast, high-quality output with many features for automating and sim- plifying operation. Expanding on this investment, a Xerox Nuvera EA/MX Production Sys- tem has also been added to the Rondo-Pak equipment line up, which features the ability to merge variable images and data at the same speed as its print engine. Lastly, Rondo-Pak has purchased a Kongsberg X20 Cutting Table said to enhance the entire structural design process. All machines have state-of-the-art features and operator-friendly ele- ments which increase productivity and minimize downtime. The four new equipment pieces are part of a $6.5 million-dollar total equipment investment by Rondo-Pak over the past six months. Installa- tion of the equipment has taken place in first quarter of 2021 with com- pletion of the Heidelberg installation expected by Summer 2021. Rondo-Pak, LLC is a joint venture with Körber Pharma, with locations in Camden, New Jersey; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Allschwil, Switzerland; and Ejpovice, Czech Republic. Both the San Juan and Camden facilities are Tier-1 Diverse supplier locations as part of the nationally certified SBA HUBZone program, allowing customers to apply Tier-1 spend from either location. June 11: SuperCorrExpo 2021 Box Manufacturing Olympics Deadline AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, and TAPPI are combining their respective design competitions for the first time into the Box Manufacturing Olympics, being held in conjunction with AICC/TAPPI SuperCorrExpo, August 8-12, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The competition, open to all AICC and TAPPI members, features 43 categories for corrugated, folding carton, and rigid box packaging manufacturers. The breadth of cat- egories provides a wide reach into the entire packaging market and a greater diversity of ideas. Member compa- nies can show they are the best of the best. Packaging schools and universities are also invited to par- ticipate in the competition and have their own categories. Submissions are being accepted through Friday, June 11. More information and submission instructions are avail- able at www.SuperCorrExpo.org . ACTEGA, Koenig & Bauer Partner For Product Development ACTEGA, manufacturer of coatings, inks, adhesives and sealing compounds for the print and packaging industry, and Koenig & Bauer, suppliers of press solutions, have maintained their product development program, design- ing, testing, and rolling out new solutions from a dedicated Koenig & Bauer Customer Experience Center throughout the pandemic. “In March 2020, Koenig & Bauer and ACTEGA an- nounced that our partnership would be extended. As it happened, this news broke just a few days before COVID-19 really took hold of the world, disrupting ev- ery aspect of business and everyday life,” explained Eric Frank, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Koenig & Bau- er. “As a result, it quickly became clear that our partner- ship was now more significant to our customers’ success than ever before. Time-to-market was suddenly even more critical for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical sectors, for example, and the brands that our customers serve had to adapt and keep pace as consumer buying habits changed overnight.” Utilizing the capabilities of the Koenig & Bauer Customer Experience Center, the combined R&D teams were able to replicate the environment of individual customer sites. This enabled them to test new ACTEGA products and Rap- ida press configurations. New Rapida press users can take advantage of an ACTEGA starter kit. This kit was developed to optimize the print produced on any Rapida press, for premium applica- tions or everyday products in a variety of market sectors, including commercial print, folding carton, and corrugated packaging.

AF&PA Releases Paper Industry Capacity, Fiber Consumption Report The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) re- leased the 61st Paper Industry Capacity and Fiber Con- sumption Report, indicating overall U.S. paper and paper- board capacity declined 1.6 percent in 2020, compared to the average decline of 1.1 percent per year since 2011. Notably in 2020, containerboard capacity expanded, continuing a decade-long trend, and reaching a record high of 40.4 million tons. Tissue paper capacity has also been trending upward, increasing for the past five years, as well as eight of the last 10 years. Meanwhile, U.S. mill consumption of recovered fiber reached the second-highest level in the past decade. The increase was driven by mill consumption of corrugated, the largest grade of recovered fiber, which reached a re- cord high of 22.8 million tons in 2020. Boxboard was the only packaging grade to decline last year, however survey responses indicate a slight rebound in 2021. Experiencing continued secular decline from displace- ment by electronic communication, capacity for newsprint and printing-writing papers decreased in 2020, with ca- pacity for both grades declining in the past decade. Some machines that historically produced printing-writing pa- pers have been and are being repurposed to produce containerboard and packaging paper.

Survey responses indicate total paper and paperboard capacity will remain essentially flat, decreasing less than one-half of one percent in 2021. The survey reports U.S. industry capacity data for 2020 and 2021 for all major grades of paper, paperboard and pulp, as well as fiber consumption, based on a compre- hensive survey of all U.S. pulp and paper mills. Survey data includes responses from companies representing more than 86 percent of U.S. paper and paperboard industry ca- pacity, with estimates completing the data set. With the new Smartfold folder-gluer, Roberts says he was looking for added efficiency and versatility. The gluer can run a wide range of sub- strates for his customers, including E- and F-flute corrugated and 24 pt cartonboard. It has 20 glue guns from W. H. Leary. “If somebody has a six- pack beverage carrier or six-corner box with an inner cell, this gluer with this type of glue head capacity gives me an advantage,” he said. In addition to the Smartfold, EPF also has a Bobst Media folder-gluer, three Bobst BMA foil stamping machines and a 1060 Masterwork platen diecutter as well as conventional coaters, stitchers and the new MGI machine. The Ultra X2S is an extended version folder-glu- er with two crash lock bottom sections and three back folding axes. It has motorized carriers for full and sec- tional job/memory recall that includes recovery of machine operational settings for fast and repeatable changeovers with minimal startup waste. It is powered with a low con- sumption multiple servo drive system for precise carton compression section shingle control through inching, pro- duction, acceleration and deceleration speed changes, as well as high-speed precision servo back folding systems which allows minimal carton separation. The electronics is based on non-proprietary technology for easy machine

servicing and with remote diagnostics capabilities. Additional features include a wireless operator remote control for machine operations and carrier positioning, dual pivoting human machine interface (HMI) operator touch screens, pre-folding of 6 corner cartons and other Standing in front of the MGI JETvarnish 3D digital embellish- ment press is from left: Steven Roberts, Danny Stone, Bryce Poremba and Devon Hornsby. specialty work, a long “universal multi-function section” with crash/auto lock bottom and integrat- ed “bump & turn” capabilities, left and right upper driven folding belts, as well as an additional servo driven back-folding axis. When asked about efficiencies gained with the Smartfold, Roberts said, “I can give you a perfect example. We were running a neutraceutical pack- age on the Media at the same time we were set up and ready to run it on the Smartfold. We were running at about 6,000 pieces an hour on the ex- isting gluer and we produced it at 38,000 piec- es an hour on the new gluer. We could run that same structure at about 50,000, but the problem is I can’t pack it that fast. It has been a very good investment so far.” Stunning Effects With the new MGI JETvarnish 3D, EPF can offer quick finishing solutions without the conventional overhead of dies and/or screens. Roberts says the machine takes contoured hot foil and raised spot UV coatings to a new dimension. “Everyone who sees and touches this work is completely overwhelmed by the vision and touch senses. We had a client tell us the product pretty much sells itself.”

The new PPCTS DGM Smartfold 1100SL Ultra X2S folder-gluer.

Ideal for operations with offset and/or digital presses up to 25- x 47-inch format, the JETvarnish 3D is an alternative solution for 3D or traditional flat spot UV coating and vari- ous hot foil effects on runs from one to thousands. Printers can gain new customers and profitable margins by pro- viding clients with customization not available through tra- ditional and analog foil and/or spot UV coating methods,

When JB said the XL-UP upgrade would improve our productivity by a minimum of 20%, I was a bit skeptical. However, in just 2 days we went from 4,500 sph at 100% dryer power to 7,000 sph at 80% dryer power on coated paper. That’s a 55% increase in productivity with a 20% reduction in power consumption!”

U.S. Display Group Invests In Barberán Digital Press

Simply Cartons, Nottingham, UK, has installed a Golden Eagle Cold Foil module, produced by Eagle Systems, Inc., a U.S. based developer and manufacturer of foil enhancement equipment, on the company’s KBA 8-color 106 press. The instal- lation, which was completed last August in the converter’s expanded 7,500-square-meter facility, has enabled Simply Carton to launch EnviraMet, a new recyclable foil branded solution designed as a sustainable alternative to traditional metalized boards, as well as to revitalize their post-press ca- pabilities. Eco-Friendly Cold Foil Simply Carton’s EnviraMet replaces plastic lam- inate on metalized boards with a coating so that packag- ing can be easily recycled in the home. Without traditional metalized materials, there is no need for white overprint, allowing for a single printing pass of multiple metallic col- ors, eliminating the need for offline processes, according to the company. This reportedly saves time, materials, de- sign constraints, and more importantly, the environment. With numerous applications in mind for the cosmetics, fragrance, food and luxury drink, horticulture and health and beauty markets, EnviraMet is made possible by Ea-

gle Systems’ advanced cold foil system tabbed “Golden Eagle”. Eagle’s new system offers newly developed fully automatic features, as well as the “Eagle Cares” package complete with auto-doors and an on-going video feed. At the console monitor, the operator can view stop and start Eagle Systems President Mike King (L) and Simply Cartons’ Chief Executive Craig Mather finalize the installation of a Gold- en Eagle Cold Foil module on a KBA 8-color 106 press with a handshake.
