The CIPP’s Graduation Ceremony 2017 Celebrating the success of our students!

CIPP graduates were recognised for all their hard work and achievements at the Graduation Ceremony on Friday 10 November 2017. Family members, friends, tutors, CIPP staff and dignitaries all came together to celebrate the success of our students at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

In today’s unstable economic environment, obtaining professional qualifications are what distinguish individuals as true leaders in their industry.

So why are professional qualifications necessary? In payroll and pensions, they are important because of the need to update skills and knowledge according to ever-changing government legislation and regulations. Employers also have certain expectations and they demand that the professionals they employ have the ability to do their jobs to the highest standard.

The Institute’s achievement of Chartered status will help demonstrate the valuable contributions that payroll and pensions professionals provide not only within business but also to UK society as a whole.

The Institute would like to congratulate all the graduates and wish them the best in their future endeavours. And remember, education does not have to stop here – we encourage you to keep up to date with all the latest legislation changes by involving yourself in continued professional development.

The CIPP would like to thank our sponsors

Opening address

Eira Hammond FCIPPdip Chair, CIPP

I extend a very warm welcome to all of our guests here today, both on the stage, and in the audience. More importantly, I want to give a very warm welcome to each and every graduand who has joined us here today to receive their academic degree. Nelson Mandela said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. You might not be changing the world here today, but you’ve certainly taken steps to change the part of the world you inhabit, through your extra learning. You have definitely changed ‘your’ world! You have all worked to achieve the academic success we are celebrating today. I graduated with the CIPP back in 2002 and I know personally just how much you deserve to receive this recognition. You have every right to feel proud of your achievements. I am sure I speak on behalf of everyone here when I say we are honoured to be able to share this very special day with you. As a tutor having seen many students progress through the Foundation Degree, I have no doubt that during your studies you have come to value the network of fellow students and tutors, for support and advice. I hope you forged those relationships both in social settings as well as during tutorials, and I really hope that these are friendships that will continue as you progress further into your careers and beyond. Networking amongst payroll professionals is invaluable, as I’m sure you appreciate. I would like to mention those special individuals who are also here today. Family, friends, tutors and, in some cases work colleagues. I not only want to thank them on your behalf, I also want to thank them on behalf of the CIPP, for all the help and support they have given you during your studies. They have been on the same emotional rollercoaster as you; they know all the ups and downs you’ve been through; they’ve been there for you when you were frustrated or emotional; they’ve acted as a sounding board or proof reader when you’ve needed them; they’ve given you encouragement in order for you to succeed. So thank you all for that support, it was really appreciated by all our graduands. In giving that thanks, I’m delighted that so many of you have come along today to celebrate that success and to see your family and friends honoured for their fabulous achievement. I know that if all the graduands in the auditorium today were standing where I’m standing right now, they would want to thank all the people who have supported them during their studies.

Be proud, smile, and take just a moment when you get here to look around and just consider your fantastic achievement.

“‘You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting so… Get on your way!”

Dr Seuss said that, and you know what? As you walk across this stage to receive your all-important honour, don’t be nervous; hold your head up high, stand tall, be proud, smile, and take just a moment when you get here to look around and just consider your fantastic achievement, and most importantly, congratulate yourself. As you collect your certificates you will be ready to go off and climb your mountain! Finally, to our audience – remember this is a celebration – cheering, clapping and whooping is not an option, it is mandatory. And to our graduands – congratulations, and I hope you thoroughly enjoy your moment.

Ken Pullar FCIPP Chief executive officer, CIPP CEO address

Good afternoon and welcome to graduands, friends, family, tutors and other guests. We are here to celebrate and to support you graduands who have achieved a major milestone in your payroll/pension careers. We are here to celebrate your success – so please all stand up and give everyone around you a big round of applause for your achievement. Your learning was like a train journey – you had a destination in sight, a goal. Each different module was like stopping at another station and then onto the next until you reached that main goal and here you are today. Knowledge is power, and you are here today to celebrate your achievement and to join an exclusive group of true professionals who continue to play their part in raising the profile of our payroll and pensions professions. Along this journey, not only have you faced challenges but you will have experienced personal transformation and change. I say this as I am sure you are not the same person now as you were when you commenced this journey. You are now equipped with a significant range of knowledge and skills and your qualification shouts out that you can do exactly what it says on the tin and more. Your designatory letters demonstrate your qualification and professionalism to the world. Make sure you continue your membership with the CIPP in order to use these well-earned letters after your name. These letters not only demonstrate that you have achieved your qualification, but that you have access to the latest information and support relating to changes in the industry and that you are a payroll or pensions professional worth having on the team. Now that you have reached a major destination it may be your ultimate goal, but you may be already thinking about the next destination. For those of you who are already planning the next goal there are further steps you can choose to take in the form of the BA (Hons) top up to your Foundation Degree or the MSc in Business and Reward Management. This is your choice and your personal destination. There’s more. At our Annual Conference last month, the board was proud to announce the introduction of Individual Chartered Status. Your Foundation Degree, coupled with your continuing professional development, forms part of the main application criteria. So it is important to make sure you keep your membership up to date and keep those all-important letters, as you have earned them.

Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and

most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.

Whatever you do next, remember learning is a life-long journey both personally and professionally but where ever your journey takes you I want to wish you the very best.

My final words to you are ‘don’t forget to complete your continuous professional development’; and as Pele, who played for Brazil and is probably the most famous footballer on the planet, said: “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.”

Enjoy your day and congratulations once again.

The CIPP’s Graduation Ceremony 2017

Guest address

Helen Livesey MBA MREC CertRP Business director, Hays Payroll Management

Firstly, please allow me to pass on my warm congratulations to all of you here today to celebrate your achievements – well done on all your hard work. Secondly, there are continued career opportunities for payroll and pensions professionals throughout the UK and I see no sign of that changing in 2018 and I will now tell you a little more about why that is. For the last seven years, it has been the busiest period in the history of the payroll and pension profession. Here in the UK we have all been dealing with real time information, automatic enrolment, shared parental leave, gender pay reporting, IR35 to name a few, and these continued regulatory and legislative changes have kept the payroll and pension profession extremely busy and therefore in demand. The heavy workload of pension and payroll professionals is set to increase further as the economy continues to grow and employers hire more or even just different staff. We have not seen a downturn in recruitment despite all the political upheaval of the last 12-18 months. Indeed, in our new Hays Salary Guide Report for 2018, which we are just in the middle of launching, 95% of organisations tell us they expect their business activities to increase or remain the same – and nearly 60% of accountancy and finance employers said they plan to recruit over the next 12 months. Therefore, holding onto good professionals will be critical during this time, and supporting professional studies is a great way to show staff you value them and are looking to invest in them particularly as employers now hold the CIPP qualification in higher regard than ever before. Here at Hays we are seeing a real demand in candidates looking for new employers to sponsor them during their CIPP studies and this is certainly one of the ways both to attract and retain the best candidates. Everyone in this room celebrating today has worked hard to gain their CIPP qualification and to add another dimension to their career choice as a payroll or pensions professional. At Hays, we believe that employers and the payroll and pension profession need to work together to find ways to open-up this function as a career choice to a broader range of people, including school leavers into apprenticeships, and graduates, as this will help the profession have more choice of candidates in the future, plus growing the CIPP and payroll community. To summarise, you will find that your payroll and pension skills will stay in massive demand throughout 2017 and into 2018, putting pressure on employers to address the shortage of suitable candidates. Employers are keen to keep their payroll and pension professionals, so are increasingly making counter-offers to individuals who have secured another job offer. In order to retain good people, it is also important for payroll professionals to feel confident that their current employer is committed to investing in their future over the medium-to long-term – offering training and degrees through the CIPP is an absolute must for any organisation wanting to stand out as an employer of choice.

Employers now hold the CIPP qualification in higher regard than ever before.

Congratulations again and enjoy your celebration.

Guest address

Carsten Staehr CEO, Cintra HR & Payroll Services

Unfortunately Carston was unable to attend the ceremony but provided the following address:

Studying for a qualification takes a tremendous amount of drive and dedication, and the fact that most of you will have achieved this whilst juggling a full time job, family responsibilities and the many other commitments that our incredibly busy lives throw at us, is outstanding. This level of commitment leaves me in no doubt that you as graduands are the payroll stars of the future and your employers should be very proud of you. The CIPP do a fantastic job of making sure that the payroll profession achieves the recognition it deserves. It responds to the changes and pressures the industry faces and provides courses that equip you to be the very best that you can be. The introduction of Individual Chartered Status, launched last month, is another example of how the CIPP is enabling its members to demonstrate their commitment to compliance and best practice within payroll and pension’s administration and management. Your success here today and your commitment to continuing professional development is a springboard towards achieving the Holy Grail of Individual Chartered Status. In our industry we are constantly alive to new challenges and experts at shooting at moving goal posts. Pensions, in particular is an area that continues to keep us on our toes and will no doubt continue to do so moving forward. The volume of entrants to auto enrolment has increased dramatically, with all smaller employers now ‘embracing’ their responsibility and indeed many organisations facing the challenge of re-enrolment. In fact, come the New Year the term ‘staging date’ will be a thing of the past! With hindsight, it would have been great to have developed a standard interface for all pension providers, rather than the multiple ones we are now faced with…but we are where we are, and, as payroll professionals, we will get the job done and it will be done well! Common to everyone in this room, and demonstrated by your willingness to invest in continuing your education, is the desire to do a good job, to have the expertise and knowledge that enables you to face these and future challenges with confidence. Cintra are staunch supporters of the CIPP: as industry bodies go it really is at the top of its game. The information sharing, courses, networking…they are all first rate. But what really makes the institution great is you – its members! You are the heart of the CIPP: the drive, professionalism and thirst for knowledge that you demonstrate today is what really sets it apart. The CIPP undoubtedly has the most dedicated members of any institution I have encountered. With your commitment and enthusiasm I know the future of the payroll profession is in good hands! Fresh challenges are always around the corner: most recently gender pay gap reporting with the General Data Protection Regulation following hot on its heels in May 2018.

The CIPP undoubtedly has the most dedicated members of any institution.

I hope you take pride in the achievements we celebrate today and I hope you continue to evolve with the help and support of the CIPP and your fellow professionals.

Cintra HR & Payroll Services is proud to support this event and I, personally, am truly proud of each and every one of you and wish you continued success in the future.

The CIPP’s Graduation Ceremony 2017

You are now distinguished, in that you are among the first new graduates to be able to apply for Individual Chartered Status in association with the CIPP as you progress along in your career. You have achieved your foundation and honours degree through an almost unique blend of teaching and independent study that encourages direct application to the workplace. As you have handed in each assessment for each unit you have learnt, acted, reviewed and renewed your practice. You are the Kolb Learning Cycle personified. You have also balanced and prioritised more than most, with full-time work alongside your books and blogs. Along the way, you have probably welcomed the support and patience of those who are here today. They were there with encouragement and belief. Let’s raise a round of applause to them. Your studies have not just been about specific payroll and pension policy and practice, but also its people. Your studies in management theory and team dynamics, (from Belbin to McGregor) has given you further insight into how people respond and behave in work situations. You know the best ways to motivate people and how to avoid a work environment that can just as easily de-motivate them. We can identify our actions and style in the light of these theories. This naturally leads to greater reflection, so you begin to see and understand things slightly differently, with more perspective. One of those most illuminating perspectives is of yourself. What we have learnt of ourselves arises less direct, perhaps. Something that can creep upon us, almost. For just as we recognise features of Belbin’s team roles in those around us, so we do in ourselves. As you see good examples of those theories put into practice, you began to explore your own limits and ideas. Employing those theories, we can change our approach or adopt different ones. As we begin to experiment in areas we lack confidence in, we find that hidden strengths and talents emerge. You, more than many other higher education graduates, have increased your capacity to learn, through own study and research skills, equipping you with the ability and discipline to study independently. This will allow you to readily update your knowledge, such as changes in legislation or continue your professional development, for you have learnt how to learn. Hopefully, you have already had and, more importantly, taken the opportunity to apply your studies. To lead a team, or under your own initiative, bring a direct improvement to your organisation, in performance or practice. In these circumstances you can best combine what you know and your skills in applying it, with your very own unique approach, or style. The potential of learning is one I hope you share with others. I trust you to become its advocate, a testament to its value. Guiding and supporting others to unveil their hidden strengths and talents, as they seek to become, like yourselves, distinguished. Peter Robinson MSc Assistant principal - higher education and standards, Heart of Worcestershire College Guest address

You, more than many other higher education graduates, have increased your capacity to learn.

On behalf of all at the Heart of Worcestershire College, I congratulate you on your graduation and wish you a great day today and a prosperous future.

Congratulations to 2015’s highest achievers 7 ‘

Apprentice of the year 2017

Student: Nathan Ogilvie Assessor: Sandra Lingwood

This award recognises the incredible development of an apprentice who began their payroll career just two years ago.

This individual has completed both their level two and three apprenticeships in that time and has developed into a competent payroll officer who already processes a headcount of around 4,000 employees.

The employer said: “They have a true thirst for knowledge and I like to call them ‘the sponge’, the amount of payroll knowledge they have soaked up is quite incredible. I couldn’t have dreamed for a better apprentice and I truly believe they are a worthy winner.”

“When I was first told about this award, I never thought I’d even be considered, let alone win it! I would like to say a massive thanks to Cintra, who took me on at age eighteen and taught me everything I know about payroll, and to my tutor, Sandra Lingwood as well, who has been invaluable over the past two years. I am honoured to be the CIPP apprentice of the year.”

Foundation Degree in Payroll Management Best Work Based Project Award 2017

Student: Jill Swift Tutor: Pete Statham

The work based project is a substantial and challenging piece of work; students are required to negotiate a project within their organisation which focuses on a deep study of a live issue/ problem in the organisation.

This student was a high achiever getting an A in her first assignment and A+ thereafter.

The tutor of this individual said: “it was a well written and well-presented report, with good use of bullet points, sub paragraphs and in particular tables, diagrams and graphs which enhanced the presentation further. It’s been a pleasure tutoring this individual through the Foundation Degree and I wish her good luck in everything she does going forward”.

“I was very surprised and grateful to receive the award for the best work based project. I’ve loved the course from start to finish and am very grateful to my tutor Pete Statham and the tutor group for their encouragement and support over the three years. I worked hard on the project so to receive this recognition is the icing on the cake.”

The CIPP’s Graduation Ceremony 2017

Foundation Degree in Payroll Management Student of the Year Award 2017

Student: Deborah Ellul Tutor: Devila Rabadia

This award is presented to a year three graduate each year, and recognises the effort and fortitude of the individual for overcoming work or personal issues that could have stopped them continuing with their studies.

“This student joined my tutor group in year two and completed her studies earlier this year. She started off as a quiet and reserved student but once she got to know the group she actively contributed to tutorial discussions.

“This student had a pro-active attitude throughout the two years and her planning and organisational skills have most definitely helped ensure each submission was on time and to a good standard.“

“It was a tough year but I was always determined to complete the Foundation Degree despite being on maternity for the final part. Lots of planning meant I was able to complete most of the work based project during my babies nap or feeding times. I had great support from my loved ones and I feel privileged to win the award.”

Foundation Degree in Pensions Administration and Management Best Work Based Project Award 2017

Student: Callum O’Hagan Tutor: Lynne Miller

The work based project is a substantial and challenging piece of work; students are required to negotiate a project within their organisation which focuses on a deep study of a live issue/ problem in the organisation.

“The project was very well structured. An issue was identified in great detail and the conclusions and recommendations were clearly derived from their findings. The recommendations could clearly be linked back to the data analysis chapter. They were practical recommendations and could be easily implemented.

“This student has always been engaged, and made great contributions to the tutorials and continually produced a high standard of work that was a pleasure to both read and mark.”

“Thank you to everyone at work who supported me with my work based project, filling in my questionnaires and participating in interviews, and my managers for giving me all the guidance I needed. It was a great surprise to win the best work based project award.”

Congratulations to 2015’s highest achievers Foundation Degree in Pensions Administration and Management Student of the Year Award 2017 7 ‘

Student: Callum O’Hagan Tutor: Lynne Miller

The recipient of this year’s award has participated knowledgably, throughout the three years of the course, applying themselves extremely well and delivering consistently high quality work.

“They have shown commitment to their studies with excellent attendance at module review days and tutorials and always provided a valuable contribution. During the module review days and tutorials they were always focused and interactive, asking many valid questions and challenging where they felt it was necessary and it was a pleasure to see their development grow.

“They always made sure they understood the main objective of the assignments, and were never afraid to ask for clarification where applicable.

“Their assignments were always submitted on time and were well-presented and well-structured to a very high standard throughout the qualification and clearly showed the additional and extensive research that was undertaken for each module.

“The winner has been an excellent student and it has been a pleasure to have been their tutor”.

“I did not expect to win one award, let alone two, so it was a massive shock and honour to be called up a second time for the Student of the Year Award. It was a tough three years but well worth it in the end. Thank you to everyone who supported me along the way, particularly my tutor Lynne Miller.”

BA (Hons) in Applied Business and Management (CIPP) Best Work Based Investigation 2017

Student: Emma Fryer Tutor: Sue Smith

The marking and moderation team at the University of Derby said: “This piece of work demonstrated excellent organisation and layout. The work was well structured, showed a depth of understanding and flowed coherently making it a pleasure to read. The gathered data and analysis for best work based investigation award 2017 was extremely thorough, thus providing a clear link between the data, the findings and the recommendations. In practical terms it was evident to see the relevance to the student’s organisation.” This student has shown great determination and ability in completing their dissertation to such a high standard and we know they surprised themselves because they asked the University to reconfirm their grade. The work based investigation is titled: Leadership styles and their impact on employees during a merger. “I was very proud to have graduated with my degree but I was even more astonished and honoured to receive the award for BA(Hons) best work based investigation 2017. My fellow graduates and I worked extremely hard balancing home life and work schedules and with the added addition of studying to this already hectic mix means we should all be proud of what we have accomplished. “I would like to thank my partner, family, colleagues, fellow students, the CIPP and tutors for all of their guidance, support and above all patience throughout the duration of the course. I look forward to being able to fully utilise the skills I have learnt throughout the course and to continuing my professional development.”

The first to achieve Individual Chartered Status

Michelle Crook (1973–2016)

“Michelle passed away suddenly, just a few days after the CIPP graduation ceremony last year. Her passion for payroll was instrumental in bringing to life the introduction of Individual Chartered Status. She would have been proud to know that she had played such an integral part in this significant accomplishment.

“The legacy Michelle has left will make a long-lasting difference to the Institute, as well as to the membership.

Eira said: “On behalf of the CIPP board of directors, I am proud to announce that the very first holder of Individual Chartered Status is the late Michelle Crook. I am delighted that Michelle’s husband, Rob Crook is here to accept the award on her behalf.“

Final words, close of ceremony and final bidding

Eira Hammond FCIPPdip Chair, CIPP

Wasn’t that a wonderful ceremony in such a fantastic venue? I’d like to offer sincere thanks to Elaine and the whole education and events team for organising such a fabulous day. Thank you also to Ken, Helen, Carsten and Peter for their thought provoking and inspirational addresses. And thanks to our sponsors: Cintra HR & Payroll Services, Hays Payroll Management and the International Association of Bookkeepers. Thank you to all the CIPP tutors, and the high level of commitment they continuously show, in supporting their students through their studies, often until late in the evening, and at weekends, when students are most likely to be studying. We know most of our tutors have their own day jobs, and the CIPP really appreciate all the work they do. Thank you also to our founding members and the CIPP board. On your behalf, I would once again like to thank your friends and family for the support they have given throughout your studies and for joining you here today. Most importantly I want to thank you for all your hard work and dedication. Remember, today is for celebration and congratulations, so take just a moment to congratulate others sitting around you, give each other a handshake of admiration – and, after we leave the auditorium, remember to find and speak to those to whom you want to say a personal thank you, or congratulations to, over a celebratory drink. Make sure you also get their contact details for those ongoing networking opportunities. Next week, when you return to the office, don’t forget that your certificate should take pride of place. Be proud, and remember to show it to your boss and colleagues, pin it on the notice board, or display it, framed, on your desk. You deserve the recognition and congratulations. Soon after I graduated, I enquired about becoming a tutor myself, to give something back to the payroll industry, and encourage other payroll professionals to study; I’ve been tutoring ever since. Perhaps some of you are considering the same, or perhaps embarking on a further academic qualification? Get in touch with the qualifications team, anytime in the future, if you feel you would like to support others in their development, or continue with your own academic studies. Another way you can keep on learning is to continue to support us, the CIPP, your Institute. Stay involved, keep your CPD up to date, and keep your full membership status now you have earned it. We welcome you most warmly to our family, and when you are ready to take your next learning experience, remember the success you feel today, and whatever that is, you know you will be able to take on the challenge and enjoy it. Whatever part of your learning journey you are on, whether you have already achieved your graduate status or are part-way through your journey, there are some challenges for the future for all of us: ● to stay at the top of our profession ● to use what you have learnt as a stepping stone for the future – to better both yourself and your profession ● to encourage others to follow in your footsteps.

When you return to the office, don’t forget that your certificate should take pride of place.

Cherish this moment – we, in the CIPP, honour and applaud your effort, and take pride in any small contribution we have given to you, in achieving all of this.

The CIPP’s Graduation Ceremony 2017

The CIPP’s education history

The CIPP has been providing payroll and pensions support to individuals and businesses since 1980 when the Association of Pensions and Superannuation Administrators (APSA) was formed. In 1998 APSA merged with the Institute of British Payroll Managers (IBPM), which was formed in 1985, and became the Institute of Payroll and Pensions Management (IPPM). Following research and feedback from members the IPPM became the Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP) in 2007 and was granted Royal Chartered Status in March 2011.

Our qualifications programme was launched in 1991 when just under 500 students enrolled; all research had indicated that we would be fortunate to get 100 so this was a tremendous achievement.

The oldest graduate in those early days was a 63 year old gentleman who said he wanted to show the world that he could do the job.

Since then, the CIPP has been the single largest provider of part-time, professional payroll and pensions education. Our qualifications are accepted as the industry benchmark and, thanks to the support provided to students, the CIPP has an outstandingly high pass rate for blended learning study methods. In order for a qualification to count, it needs validation and legitimacy. In the early days our qualifications were accredited by Edexcel/BTEC, and now we work with Heart of Worcestershire College, the University of Worcester and the University of Derby to provide the only university approved payroll and pensions qualifications in the UK. From around 30 volunteers helping to deliver tutorials and mark papers when we first started, the CIPP now has almost 120 tutors who work tirelessly to deliver a high quality service and qualification. CIPP tutors are all highly experienced practitioners with extensive working knowledge of the profession. The Institute has come a long way since the early days when we dreamed of creating a recognised qualification for the profession, and with more than 20,000 CIPP qualified individuals in the UK, and the introduction of Individual Chartered Status encouraging more to undertake formal qualifications – that number keeps growing and growing.
