Phil Weaver Executive Director, All-Star Games
As all-star season approaches, this is a good time to review the responsibilities of coaches at every stage of the process—from supporting selected players, to making nominations, to serving as an all-star coach. Following these guidelines helps ensure a smooth and successful experience for everyone involved.
Part 1 – Your player is selected: It seems I can’t address the subject of the duties of coaches who have a player in an all-star games enough. If you have a player in the basketball or soccer events coming up please remember: 1. If you’re a NCCA member, you may be our guest at the Sunday night banquet . Your spouse or children will need to pay. Tim Via ( tvia@nccoach. org ) or Malea Jones ( mjones@nccoach.org ) are your contact persons. 2. When you nominated or agreed to ask your player to complete the Acceptance Form , you automatically agreed to: a. Sit down with your player and complete the Acceptance Form by the deadline. I have little patience with coaches who don’t seem to be able to do this. This office can do nothing until the head all-star coach can solidify a roster. b. Keep in contact with your athlete to make sure they will be attending on time and stay with us for the entire period. c. Make certain the athlete has transportation to and from the game. d. Make certain a physical and concussion statement, valid through the game, are sent to Ms. Jones. e. Act as our point of contact until the game coaches take over. f. You will be introduced with and escort your player during the roster introductions before the game. Reggie Peace ( Reginaldpeace@lee.k12. nc.us ) will coordinate for basketball and Brent Walston ( walston4@hotmail.com ) for soccer. You’ll be hearing from them.
Part 2 – Nominating: For all head football, basketball, and soccer coaches who plan to nominate for next year’s games; please note the following: 1. Only NCCA member head coaches may nominate. 2. Associates and non-members should have their AD or another school’s NCCA member head coach nominate for them. We’ll correspond with you alone if the player is chosen. Only after the rosters are announced do we contact the player directly. We depend on you to get us to that point quickly. 3. You may nominate as many players as you wish but remember you’re telling our all-star coaches that the player is one of the state’s best and is of high character. As an example, coaches who nominate three players for the NC/SC games and whose team has a mediocre record, lose credibility. Better to push one great player than toss in too many names. 4. Please take the few minutes required to nominate by the deadline. I send a spreadsheet of the nominated players to the all-star coaches the day after the deadline. If you miss it, your nomination is separately sent later and not on the spreadsheet for easy reference by our coaches. 5. Be prepared to follow-through on the items in the Part 1 of this article. 6. Football is different since the Shrine Bowl picks their team first, but these items still apply. 7. Any player nominated, but not selected, will remain an active alternate.
See “ Notes from the Games Desk” on page 5
NC Coach • Summer 2026 • Page 4 • nccoach.org
Notes from the Games Desk
5. You must be willing to work with players’ home coaches to immediately replace any dropped players and notify Malea and me of any drop and their projected replacement. 6. Ms. Jones will be your contact person once you finalize the roster. I’m available if she’s not or to answer policy questions. 7. You will be expected to participate in a Zoom or in-person meeting before you make your team selections. Football coaches will meet at the NCCA offices after the NCFCA clinic concludes that morning. Basketball and soccer coaches meet by Zoom currently, but I think these meetings are not very productive. We may return to bringing these coaches into Greensboro. 8. Players are not considered All-Stars until they’ve completed the Acceptance Form. You need to harass, if necessary, player’s coaches to get them to work with the player to accept. 9. You should remain in regular contact with the all- star players so you don’t have last minute surprise drops.
Part 3 – Coaching in an All-Star Game: 1. The Board of Directors selects all the all-star coaches for the next calendar year at their July meeting. Any NCCA member or an athletic director may make nominations through me or to a Board member. All nominations remain active for at lease three years. 2. If you are chosen, I will be contacting you pretty soon after your clinic sessions end. I like to have all 28 coaches onboard by the Monday after the Clinic. 3. Immediately after accepting an All-star coaching position you should begin working on player selection. Contact other high school coaches, talk with college coaches, and watch games. 4. The head all-star coach is responsible for turning in a final roster and for keeping up with it as there might be a declining player or one who must drop out for a good reason. But, head coaches are expected to consult their assistant(s) in formulating the roster and player alternates.

there is confusion related to pictures and session attendance. When you pick up your packet, one of the cards has NCCA at the top and two lines for you to put your name and school. This is ALL YOU NEED to get into any clinic session. You can get your picture made later when the lines may be down a bit – we all know Monday is the busiest day. NCCA This year, we decided to add sessions for Flag Football and Men’s Volleyball , two sports recently sanctioned by the NCHSAA. This is a trial – we really want to see how many people will attend these sessions to see if we need to keep them for 2027. Both will be on Wednesday, July 22. Flag Football will be in the Odeon Theater on Wednesday morning for three sessions. Not hard to get to as you walk out the side doors of the Special Events Center like you are walking to the parking lot and make a left. You’ll past the Special Events Center and Coliseum and the signs for the Odeon Theater are on the left. As a matter of fact, you can park in the area next to the Odeon Theater and the Terrace. Men’s Volleyball is on Wednesday afternoon in Meeting Room 1. I know we have coaches doing both Women’s and Men’s and I’m sorry about the overlap, but we just don’t have the room space on another day. I’ve already talked with some Volleyball coaches about creative scheduling if we keep this session. _______________ _______________ 2026
Here we go for 2026! The entire clinic schedule and clinician descriptions are up at www.nccoach. org . If you don’t read but one thing – READ THIS – Just because your school paid to register you, if you don’t show up to the clinic and pick up your packet, you ARE NOT a member/associate and receive no benefits for the year. This column is all about navigating the clinic so I hope these suggestions help. Registration reminders: Everyone knows that Monday morning is the busiest time of the week. Registration opens at 8am and we will have people standing in front of the Special Events Center by 6:30am. The registration lines are busiest from 8-11 on Monday and the picture lines in the Trade Show don’t calm down until around 3. If you are going to be at the clinic for 2-3 days, get your picture made at a time when the line is shorter. We will have 8 preregistration lines and 3 new registration lines . We are going to try it out and see if it helps with congestion. The lines are divided as such: A-Bu, By-Du, Dy-Ha, He-K, L-Mi, Mo-Re, Rh- Sz, T-Z. We looked at the preregistered numbers and alphabet for a couple of years and tried our best to divide equally. We will open after lunch at 1:45 as opposed to 2:00 to give extra time for folks to get to the 2pm sessions. Pre-registered Gold Card Members will be able to skip the pre-reg lines and come directly to the right side of registration to pick up their packet. Even though we open registration at 8am and start sessions at 9:50 on Monday, we believe that

Notes from the Clinic Desk
Back in February, I was contacted by Tim Stevens and he said via email: Thank you for taking the time to review Pick Up Your Bed and Walk: The Lessons of Cyclone Country. I truly believe it would be time well spent for the coaches attending the N.C. Coaches Association Convention. For 48 years, I had the privilege of covering high school athletics for The Raleigh News & Observer. Along the way, the NCHSAA honored me by naming its media award after me, and I was inducted into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame, the National High School Hall of Fame, and the NCHSAA Hall of Fame. Those recognitions mean a great deal — but what I value most are the decades spent around coaches and players across this state. Since retiring, I have focused on documentary storytelling. This is my first sports-centered film — though it is not really about football. It is about boys becoming men. These former players, now in their 70s, reflect on the demanding standards of their coach and the lifelong impact of lessons learned on the practice field — resilience, accountability, teamwork, perseverance. I attended the Coaches Association convention for many years, and I understand the influence this gathering has. My hope is that this film affirms coaches in the work they do every day — work that often isn’t fully understood until decades later.
On Wednesday afternoon, I’m going to show “Pick Up Your Bed and Walk” in Meeting Room 2 beginning at 2:30. It’s only about an hour long documentary and I really enjoyed it. So if you are interested, stop by and “sit a spell” as Andy Griffith would say. We look forward to a fantastic clinic in July as that always is a great start to a new sports year for our coaches, student-athletes and schools. As I always say, don’t ever underestimate what a profound effect you have on the young people for whom you mentor, support, challenge and inspire. Thanks for being a coach! Together, we are keeping the title “Coach” one that is respected and admired – and that can last a lifetime. See you soon. Old Timer’s Lunch The Old Timer’s Lunch for Lifetime Members of the Association will be held on Tuesday, July 21 , at 12:30 pm in Meeting Room 4. RSVP to mmorris@nccoach.org by July 9 if you plan to attend.

A New Column is Here: Coaches Do and Say The Darndest Things We’re beginning a column of great coaching stories because we know every school has many of them. Send your best true story to ncca@nccoach.org and we’ll have a committee select the best for the next issue.
Lewis McCall was a baseball coach at Grimsley in the sixties. He had a particularly obnoxious parent, we’ll call Mr. Jones, who loved to offer advice from the stands; and not quietly. McCall won two 4A state championships in 11 years, so he was no slouch as a coach. One game there were runners at first and third with one out and McCall called for a double steal that backfired badly. The Mr. Jones lit him up from right behind home plate. As luck would have it the same situation arose a few innings later. “Time” McCall yelled and strode to home plate. But instead of addressing the umpire, he pivoted and walked towards the stands behind the plate and loudly asked: “Mr. Jones, it’s first and third and one out, what do you want me to do.” Mr. Jones quickly left and attended no more games that season. Phil Weaver, Grimsley HS
We were discussing football endzone dances and the like in the office one day before such things became so prevalent. Marion Kirby, who greatly opposed them, had it pointed out to him that he’d had a player do it. Marion responded: “You know, it doesn’t look nearly as bad when it’s your kid doing it.” Marion Kirby, Page HS
NC Soccer Coaches Association Supports Move to Truist Point The NCCA thanks the NC Soccer Coaches Association for contributing funds to support moving the soccer matches to Truist Point in High Point , the home of the Carolina Core professional men’s soccer club’s field. This is a renewal of the help the NCSCA gave us for the continuance of the matches years ago. The Carolina Core is also committed to seeing how we can work together to promote both our organizations and the sport of soccer. Maverick Awards Becomes Ring Supplier We have changed our ring supplier to Maverick Awards. We have the same contract elements with free rings for state champion coaches (regardless of membership in the NCCA), free rings for our All-Star Coaches, and a donation to our Scholarship Fund by Maverick each year based on state-wide sales. Because of the late signing of the agreement, we can’t promise when any of the rings will be available.

Press Box Perspective
I saw a shining example of the problem when I used to be allowed to attend all-conference meetings. I once sat with a group of coaches who were arguing back and forth about the selection of their team. They set down some rules that limited the number of players a coach could nominate. There was a coach whose team had enjoyed a less than successful season, and he was adamant that in spite of the limits on nomination, his athlete absolutely deserved to be nominated. And that’s where the problem comes from. You as a coach have invested hours on the practice and game fields and courts with these athletes. Some of them may not be talented, but they have the heart of a lion and the character of Lincoln and you love them to death. And that’s why when it comes time to make these choices, you feel they deserve recognition. So let’s pick two quarterbacks instead of one, four wide receivers instead of two, 10 offensive linemen instead of five. We go from a pie with six slices to one with 20. It’s a nice gesture, but it’s not fair to the truly great athletes on your “all” team. Ever watched the Oscars? There are multiple nominees in each category, but when they tear open the envelope, only one person or movie goes home with the golden statue. It should be the same with “all” teams. I’ve got no problem with second and third teams. That’s what they were made for, to honor more athletes, and to do it in a reasonable way. I don’t expect this column to lead to a wave of “all” teams in 2026-27 that will be closer to the actual on-field number in that sport, but at least give it a thought. Earl Vaughan Jr. Press & Social Media Coordinator on X: @EarlVaughanJr
As we dive into summer and look ahead to the return of competition in the fall, I want to plant a seed for all the coaches and athletic directors out there. For years, dating back to my earliest days as a sports writer in the 1970s, I’ve had a cause that’s been a source of concern for me, one that apparently isn’t shared by many other folks that can do something about it. Granted, this is far from a hot button issue and isn’t going to be something that will get anybody arrested, fired or sued. But it’s definitely a sore point with me. If you think I’m nuts, no problem, you’re entitled. Many have. But I think I’ve got a case here and if you’ll just give me a few paragraphs I’ll lay it out for you. It’s my humble opinion that we’ve made the honor of making most of your all-conference, all-region and all-state teams that are selected these days less of an honor than it should be. The reason? With incredibly rare exception, every team I see picked has far too many athletes on it. I realize the coaches, and the media that select their own teams, are trying to honor as many deserving athletes as they can. And that’s a good thing. But there’s another issue to consider here. How many people are actually on said first team? If you tried to put this all-star team you picked on a field or court, you’d forfeit the game. I’ve seen actual cases where some of these teams had twice as many, sometimes more, players than a normal lineup in that sport allows. If you’re picked to any kind of “all’’ team, you should clearly be a few notches above all the other starters in your sport. But I realize what the problems are. The biggest is you don’t have to make a tough choice between good or great candidates.

“Press Box Perspective”
*I’ve been silent after the huge flap in North Carolina track and field this year when Mallard Creek lost a state championship then was allowed to share it after an incident involving an athlete making an inoffensive gesture on the track before his race ended. I think the final decision was the correct one, and I applaud the action taken by the NC High School Athletic Association to reverse the original call. But I think a lot of the criticism initially voiced was misdirected. The basic problem was not the ruling made by the track official that first cost Mallard Creek the title. The rule as I read it was badly written and should never have been put into the National Federation of State High School Association’s rule book. Basically, the rule said you weren’t allowed to make any kind of gestures before a race comes to an end. And it gives the official the freedom to call it as he or she sees it. There were multiple media reports of athletes making similar gestures during the same track meet where no penalty was assessed. Folks, that’s as old as sports. Different officials judge things differently. Just look at an umpire’s strike zone. No two are alike. Any rule that allows that kind of flexibility in making a call is going to cause a problem. Unfortunately, whenever you get a group of people together in a room to write rules, you’ll often find one person who has some obscure issue they have a concern about, and if they’re persuasive enough they get a majority of people in the room to agree and bang, you get a screwy rule.
Two words need to prevail every time any group gathers to put rules on paper. Common sense. What does the rule accomplish and how is the clearest way to write it. If we’d follow those two guidelines, rulebooks would make life easier for all of us. One final comment on track and field in general. Anyone who’s ever been to a track meet, and I covered a few NCHSAA state finals back in the day, know it’s got more moving parts than Apollo 11. Track and field rules are the abominable snowman of sports, wild and mysterious. I covered a regional meet one time where a relay team had competed all season long without incident, and was disqualified because their shorts didn’t match. Former Texas Sports Information Director Jones Ramsey was right. The quote “The only thing worse than track is field.’’ is attributed to him.
