Demand For PS Labels Trends Upward D emand for pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA), or self-adhesive labels, is expected to rise 3.5 percent per year to $15.1 bil- lion in 2021, according to a new report from The Freedonia Group. Demand for pressure sensitives, which accounted for 76 percent of total label demand in 2016, will benefit from greater demand for value-added types and smart labels. The almost exclu- sive use of PSAs in fast-growing markets such as the secondary and mailing and shipping segments will also drive growth.

For exclusive content and breaking news please visit www.flexomarketnews.com The company was able to identify the alleged counterfeit Avery products after receiving consumer complaints about defective labels purchased online. The products came boxed in what ap- peared to be Avery packaging, but did- n’t perform like genuineAvery labels. Western Shield Acquires DAC Labels Western Shield Label Company, a label manufacturer headquartered in Rancho Dominguez, California, has ac- quired DAC Labels & Graphic Special- ties, Inc., a flexo label converter in Dallas, Texas. as sophisticated marketing and track and trace tools, leading to growth for value-added label types.“Ongo- ing improvements in converting techniques and printing technologies will lower costs and increase penetration of these higher value labels,” said analyst Ellen Kriz. Pressure sensitive labels will continue to displace glue-applied labels going forward, though at a slower pace than that of the last decade, the report con- firms. Emerging opportunities, in addition to the aforementioned anticipated growth in the pastic and film label segment, include specialized labels, such as RFID-enabled varieties and extended content labels. Variable information labels in secondary and mail- ing and shipping applications are expected to post strong growth, the report reveals. Gains in secondary labels will be largely driven by value-added track and trace labels in transportation and distribution mar- kets, as well as increased retail activity. “Mailing and shipping labels will benefit from the continued growth of e-commerce,” Kriz says.“Address labels for individually packaged items instead of bulk shipping to stores, as well as a trend toward printing return labels, will boost demand.” Windmöller & Hölscher has confirmed Apex Inter- national to be certified partner of aniloxe rolls for the flexo printing presses in the showroom. SCIENCE of flexo rollers and sleeves

The

Skilled flexo printers know any variation in temperature, humidity, substrates and a host of other conditions will affect the quality of their work. Cleanliness of lines, accuracy of colors and softness of shades can make or break a job. But if you want to maximize profits, you need to optimize uptime, speed and quality. The anilox rollers and sleeves in your presses are only as good as the science behind them—the technology of precision . ARC rollers and sleeves are built to exacting OEM dimensions, with cell geometries engineered for efficient ink usage and precise volumes. Sonoco, Clemson Partner On Packaging Initiative Sonoco, Hartsville, South Carolina, reportedly one of the largest global diversified packaging companies, has launched a new research partnership with Clem- son University. The Sonoco FRESH (Food Research Excellence for Safety and Health) initiative will develop new tech- nologies and new forms of packaging to optimize the fresh food lifecycle. “Sonoco is committed to serving fresh brands, using packaging to tackle the challenges they face,” Sonoco President and CEO Jack Sanders said in a news re- lease. “Optimizing fresh food packaging to extend shelf life and maintain quality makes fresh produce more accessible to communities and helps brands and retailers extend sales opportunities and elimi- nate food waste. “Each year,” Sanders continued, “the food industry loses $15.6 billion due to food spoilage at retail. Mod- ifying packaging design to extend shelf life by even one day can recover $1.8 billion of that loss — while feeding more people and reducing waste to landfills.” To establish the multidisciplinary hub for innova- tion and research to advance fresh food packaging and distribution, Sonoco will contribute $1.725 mil-

lion over five years. The company also will sponsor business-driven research projects totaling $1 million over that period. Sonoco FRESH is an extension of the partnership that created the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics at Clemson.

Koenig & Bauer Donates To Doctors Without Borders Marking its 200th anniversary, Koenig & Bauer re- quested guests instead of bringing gifts to make a do- nation to the global aid organization Doctors Without Borders / Ärzte ohne Grenzen e.V.The donation sum was then doubled by the printing press builder so that the Nobel Peace Prize holder, honored for its emergency medical aid, was presented with a dona- tion of EUR 60,300. The check was ceremoniously presented on No- vember 29 at the company’s parent plant in Würzburg, Germany. Claus Bolza-Schünemann, Chair- man of the Board, Koenig & Bauer AG, and Dagmar Ringel, Head Corporate Communications & Market- ing, Koenig & Bauer, presented the check to Carmen Heeg, a volunteer for Doctors Without Borders who has worked in countries like Malawi and Nigeria. She emphasized the exceptional nature of a donation of this scale and thanked Koenig & Bauer profusely: “Many, many thanks for your generous donation which will enable us continue helping people in need across the globe." Doctors Without Borders provides medical aid in cri- sis and war zones, and in the wake of natural disasters.

Koenig & Bauer, Esko Strengthen Partnership

Koenig & Bauer and Esko recently agreed to further strengthen their partnership. To this end, color man- agement and workflow solutions from Esko were in- stalled at the Koenig & Bauer demo centre in Radebeul, Germany, and are available with immediate effect for live presentations. Koenig & Bauer sees Esko as a strong partner when it comes to process-integrated workflow solutions. Accordingly, it is pleased to be able to show users the Equinox color management technology, which en- ables printing with an extended color gamut, with the necessary RIP architecture being provided by Esko’s Imaging Engine. Flint Announces Packaging Inks Price Increase Increased, incremental cost escalation has forced Flint Group to raise the prices of its Packaging Inks products. Raw material markets for many compo- nents within Flint Group’s Packaging Inks products have experienced price escalation, said the company. Many raw material markets remain highly volatile.
