MIYC Book Club Thursday, April 28th, 12:00 noon Our April book selection is Empire of Pain, by Patrick Radden Keith. A grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin.
The history of the Sackler dynasty is rife with drama—baroque personal lives; bitter disputes over estates; fistfights in boardrooms; glittering art collections; Machiavellian courtroom maneuvers; and the calculated use of money to burnish reputations and crush the less powerful. The Sackler name has adorned the walls of many storied institutions—Harvard, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Oxford, the Louvre. They are one of the richest families in the world, known for their lavish donations to the arts and the sciences. The source of the family fortune was vague, however, until it emerged that the Sacklers were responsible for making and marketing a blockbuster painkiller that was the catalyst for the opioid crisis. Please join us for an informative and entertaining presentation by Kathleen Douglass and a book-themed luncheon creation by Chef Jono. Final 2022 MIYC Book Club Selection - May (20th) The Daughters of Yalta , by Catherine Grace Katz. Carol Comeaux, presenter. Please note – Due to the Memorial Day Holiday and prior speaker commitments, May Book Club will be on FRIDAY – May 20 th . Our Presentation and lunch/table discussions begin at noon, followed by dessert and group Wrap-up. Please feel free to invite your friends!

New Chairs for the Harbour Room and Dockside Lounge
On Friday, March 19th, 150 new chairs for the Harbour Room and Dockside Lounge were delivered to the Club. On hand to help with unloading, unpacking, and moving the chairs into the Club were: Mark Felbinger, Tom Jobe, Deb Melges, Ellie Everitt, Neil Bretthauer, and Val Bilbray. The new chairs for the Harbour Room have gray-tone patterned silk upholstered back with a gray-tone tweed fabric seat to coordinate with the updated color scheme. The chairs for the Dockside Lounge have the same gray-tone tweed fabric on both the chair and seatback. The chairs can be used in both locations interchangeably if the need arises.
Thank you Mariners Fund for purchasing these lovely and comfortable chairs.

Getting to Know You: Our New Dockmaster -- Missy Duffy
Missy was born and reared in Boca Raton, FL. She has lived in the BVIs, Bahamas, Connecticut, Nantucket, and South Carolina. She attended FAU as an undergrad majoring in Latin American literature, and earned her M.A. in Philosophy of Literature from the University of South Carolina. As well as English, she speaks Spanish and Italian. Her husband is Evan Duffy, and they are the proud owners of five cats and three bunnies, all rescue pets! They just moved to Goodland, FL, and are looking forward to making new friends there.
Missy Duffy
Missy bring a lot of prior experience to the job, including yachting, sailboat charters, as an instructor for powerboat and sailing, as a 100-ton captain, and was the dockmaster/Waterfront Director at four Clubs. Obviously, her management skills, boating experience, and preventative marina maintenance focus will be much appreciated and utilized. Her days are already quite busy with clean-up, taking transient reservations, dock inspections, planning meetings, and other tasks as needed. In the next year, she would like to see MIYC host a regatta! When not at MIYC, Missy likes to sail, hike, and swim laps. Her favorite vacation spot is the Faroe Islands, and she would like to visit as many of the world’s remote islands as possible. She loves old Rock n’ Roll music, non-fiction Florida history books, and (guilty pleasure) Cadbury Chocolates! Her causes focus on domestic animal rescue (cats and rabbits) and coral reef rehab on the East Coast of Florida and the Florida Keys. Her personal motto is a critical one: “Measure once; cut twice!”

What a Team! Debbie Rhattigan and Karen Esala From February 22, when Mike Davey left, until March 21, when our new Dockmaster Missy Duffy began, the MIYC was without a dockmaster! Not to worry! Both Debbie and Karen voluntarily stepped up to fill in the void! From Debbie’s perspective, this was an opportunity to get to know and learn
Karen
Debbie
first-hand the ins and outs of marina operations. She jumped right in to assume responsibilities such as scheduling (and re-scheduling due to weather) transients and reciprocals and setting up the various leasing arrangements. She was on the dock to guide boats safely into their slips and then secure the lines, assist with pump-outs, and clean our docks to welcome our guests. Incoming boats usually arrived in the afternoon, on their way to Marathon Key, and then on to Key West. She also came in on Sundays to accommodate FCYC transients. Debbie also was handled the responsibility of transitioning from handwritten scheduling of boats and tasks to implementing our new NorthStar system. Her goal was to make the transition seamless, which she accomplished. Karen stepped in to take over Debbie’s Marina Accounting functions, taking care to not let any of her other accounting tasks drop. She was able to gain an understanding of the “Big Picture,” which includes our daily operations as well as the Marina functions. According to our General Manager Mark, “She was very thorough, and allowed nothing to fall through the cracks. “
If needed, we know we can call on Karen, Debbie, and Chris (MIMA) to fill in.

Chairman I don't know about you, but I think the number of people visiting Southwest Florida this "Season" is significantly more than in recent memory! Grocery stores and restaurants are full...nearly all the time! Driving has been a challenge, with long lines of traffic coming onto the island in the morning and leaving the island in the afternoon. And we certainly feeling the impact at our Club! We are effectively operating at our membership cap. We have the calendar filled with member events, Club activities, and outside banquets. And getting a dining reservation at the Club can be a challenge at times. At the same time, the Club is seeing increased costs for food and other materials. Some suppliers are telling us they don't have enough staff to make timely deliveries to their customers. We are asking our own staff to work more overtime to cover staffing shortages. And the continued rise in prices for fuel, food, and essentials is adding to the stress on all our employees. I can imagine you might be wondering what are we doing at the Club to try to manage through this time? From a financial perspective, and due to the Board's and Finance Committee's leadership, we are on very sound financial footing. Our Balance Sheet is the strongest in the history of the Club. Our operating margin remains strong due to the increased membership and continuing to watch our expenses. This gives us the financial flexibility to consider some key initiatives. We have been working hard to increase our staffing levels. In the past month or so, we have added six full or part time employees to the payroll. And we are continuing to look for additional staff. We have also increased our regular complement of contracted wait staff from the staffing services we use. Unfortunately, we have also lost four full or part time employees in the same period. The
general market conditions make it financially attractive for employees to look for other jobs.
We have, in the past couple of months, introduced an employee referral bonus to help find new employees and retain them. We have recently introduced a temporary travel bonus for those employees driving longer distances to work to

help offset the higher cost of fuel. We are improving our advertising for positions to help prospective candidates understand we offer good benefits and a good working environment. And we participate in 'roundtable' discussions with other clubs in the area to make sure we are competitive in our wages and benefits. What does all this mean for our members? Our staff is working very hard to continue to provide the desired member experience. Despite everyone's best efforts, there will be times when we do not meet our own expectations of service and support. When that happens, I ask that you be tolerant and recognize the effort and commitment of those who staff our Club. Hopefully, we will see some relief as we move beyond April. But in the meantime, I would ask you to be sure to remember to say "Thank You" from time to time. I know it will be greatly
appreciated. Dave Everitt

Commodore Your Yacht Club is a wonderful place to go for a great meal, drinks with friends, perhaps an elegant Sunday Brunch, always with friendly staff, a fabulous view of the water and beautiful boats, and that certain feeling of being someplace very special. Too bad we can’t pack all this goodness up and take it along as we journey around Florida on our boats…or can we? It turns out that we can, through the magic of FCYC! FCYC, the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, was founded in 1961 to do just that. Now, MIYC Members can visit all the FCYC Yacht Clubs in Florida, and enjoy their marinas, dining, sports and other facilities just the same as their members do, with reciprocity between the Clubs. When you dine at, say, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, you won’t need a credit card. Just sign the chit, and your MIYC Membership Card will ensure that you are billed back at our club for all charges. Ride a horse from the Equestrian Center at the Tampa Yacht Club. Get tennis lessons and play a game or two at the internationally acclaimed Tennis Center at the Field Club in Sarasota. Play croquet and soak up the history of the Championship Croquet Ground at The Florida Yacht Club in Jacksonville, (white croquet dress required, please!), established in 1875. Meet an Astronaut at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club, near Cape Canaveral (at least 4 are members). Watch the finish of a transatlantic sailing race at the Halifax River Yacht Club in Daytona Beach. Prefer getting away from it all? Enjoy first-class luxury on small oceanfront islands surrounded by pristine natural beauty (like we have here at home) at the Captiva Island Yacht Club, the Carlouel Yacht Club on Clearwater Beach, the Key Biscayne Yacht Club (where you can play a round of golf as well), the Marathon Yacht Club, or FCYC’s newest Member Club, the Oyster Bay Yacht Club on Fernandina Beach. Almost everywhere you go throughout Florida, whether you go by boat, by car, or by motorcoach, there is likely to be a magnificent and welcoming Yacht Club for you to explore and enjoy, courtesy of your MIYC Membership! (Some reciprocity restrictions may apply, check with individual clubs for details). I’m pleased to announce that your Marco Island Yacht Club will have the honor of hosting a meeting of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs this May 13 th -15 th . Delegates, alternates, spouses and General Managers from all 37 FCYC clubs will be here with us, to marvel at the beauty of our island paradise, and to share ideas and best practices for running top-notch Yacht Clubs. MIYC Members will have the chance to meet our FCYC friends at Happy Hour on Friday, May 13 th , and again at the dinner on Saturday, May 14 th , subject to availability. Since so many delegates from the other clubs will be coming, space will be extremely limited, so watch your email for the chance to get your reservations in. FCYC is not the only way to get reciprocity with other great clubs. World travelers can enjoy amazing adventures at Yacht Clubs everywhere with a Letter of Introduction from our Club to the club you want to visit. Using one of these, Past Commodore Jeff Comeaux and wife Carol visited the world-famous Club de Monaco in Montecarlo last summer, and were given the VIP treatment. Your MIYC Membership makes you a Yachtsman, and makes you welcome in Yacht Clubs throughout Florida and worldwide. Enjoy! TomWentworth

Vice Commodore The March Sunset Cruise was an outstanding success -- great weather, beautiful evening, and a great dinner back at the Club. Seven captains volunteered their boats and carried about 65 members into the sunset.
The next Sunset Cruise is on April 27. Watch for the eBlasts next month for more sign-up information! We hope more captains will volunteer to participate in this event. Also, please support Past Commodore Jeff Comeaux's Day Cruise events -- the next one is going to the historic and interesting Rod and Gun Club in Everglades City. Rear Commodore Paul Soden is getting things together for this year's popular Scavenger Hunt, which is on April 4th. New members, this is a really fun event, so sign up with Paul to enter your boat and crew, or sign on as a passenger. You may recall that last summer, a large yacht grounded in the Marco River channel entrance, resulting in the Coast Guard placing temporary buoys which narrowed the channel. A proposal for dredging will be brought up at City Council on April 4 at 5:30 pm, and many of the boating organizations and marinas, including members of the MIYC bridge, will be present to support the issue. The Daylight Savings Time change and approaching summer will be altering our time schedule for future events, but as always, the MIYC Bridge promises you a unique boating experience! Membership We listen to the Club Membership and make changes based on how you use your Club! Brunch Adjustments Brunch has been so interesting for us this season! We thought with the marina now open that we would have folks boating by for lunch, so we added hours to Sunday. You will see that we are going back to our basic Brunch hours 10 am-2 pm for Sundays, and we are having a buffet through May 15 th as you all are coming to Brunch early and often. Chef Jono is also offering a few popular a la carte items so if you do not want the buffet you still have some lovely brunch-lunch options. Thanks to our Board for greeting at Brunch. We brought back our tradition and you are giving the Board your feedback, which we appreciate! You will also see some Bridge Members greeting at Brunch in the coming weeks. Greeters are available from around 11:00 am through 12:30 pm at Sunday Brunches. Feel free to give them your comments about any and all things happening around your Club! Open Fla-mingle Table
Vicki Bretthauer Bretthauer
With the new system in place for reservations we are now evaluating a new way to manage our Open Table on Friday Evenings. If you want to have dinner with other members, we now have a Club Event for an Open Fla-mingle Table of eight at 7:00 pm as well as 7:30 pm on Fridays. You can go to the website or your phone app now. You can also call the Receptionist and say that you would like to sit at the Open Table. Be sure to tell her if you would like the 7:00 pm table or the 7:30 pm table. As with any new procedure we will have some growing pains so be patient! Our Membership Coordinator Many of you may know Cynthia Hultquist, our Membership Coordinator. Some folks have asked me if Cynthia is still with us as we have capped some memberships. I can safely say that Cynthia is as busy as ever! We will be having Summer Memberships available, as well as Full Memberships if someone also joins Freedom Boat Club AND we will have Equity Memberships available until we sell all of them. Also, many new residents to the area are still asking for tours of our Club. We have a waitlist for Full and Social Memberships. Membership Updates With our Club getting to our cap on membership as well as everyone returning for season and with trying to get to our full staffing levels, we will slow down on our acceptance of new members. We want to give all our current members the best service possible. Please welcome the following new members to our Club! Miles & Penny Milligan joined MIYC and Freedom Boat Club on March 4 th . Richard & Linda Watson joined MIYC on March 30 th as Equity members referred by the Sergis. As you can see, the Member Recruiting Members is still in effect so bring your friends who want Full Membership and Freedom Boat Club or Equity Membership to your Club! Calendars for Summer and Next Season Mark your calendar for our Semi-Annual Meeting on Tuesday April 26 th . There will be more information about this meeting during the month. Be sure to click on the links for the rest of season calendar as well as next year’s draft calendar! We want you to be able to attend as many of our Club Events as possible! We also will be adding other events to FY2023 as you all really like the Fla-
mingle Progressive Dinners. We are looking for more dates for those events now! Enjoy the rest of the season and we look forward to seeing you at your Club!

Safety & Training
“Plug it Up!” Have you ever had a water pipe in your house break? How about a toilet hose connection or even an outside water sprinkler line? Quite a mess, right? But not life threatening! Now how about a hose or hull breach in your boat? Did you know that a 2-inch hole in your boat only 1 foot below the waterline would fill a 55-gallon drum in 40 seconds?! While we can’t prevent the unexpected due to equipment failure, collision, or other forms of impact such as running aground or hitting a foreign object, we can be prepared by having yet another emergency tool at our disposal should the occasion arise. I am speaking about the very small, inexpensive, and potential lifesaving TAPERED WOODEN PLUG.
Jim Rich
These plugs come in a variety of heights and diameters to conform to even the most irregular and unpredictable shapes of a hose or hull breach. Made of tapered soft wood for a snug watertight fit, these are often drilled for permanent attachment to your fittings. Tether a sized wooden plug to each fitting, ready to pound into place in case of failure or leakage. Have other (non-tethered) plugs available for emergency in the event water would enter a circular, oval, or irregular hole caused by maintenance failure. These are available from any marine store or online from Amazon. A package containing a variety of sizes will cost you less than $20. In addition, I recommend keeping at least one other type of plug on board. It is a much larger plug made of a foam material that is completely flexible. Rather than pounding into place, the user compresses it by hand into the hole, stopping or greatly reducing the inward flow of water as the foam returns to is original shape. This material can also be cut and forced into elongated openings using a putty knife, inserted into the ends of broken pipes by twist compressing before inserting, and easily plugs leaking hoses. There are two companies that manufacture a similar product: “TruPlug” and “StaPlug”. Both are available on Amazon for $19.95. Until next time, Happy and Safe Boating! Ship’s Store Greetings from the Ship’s Store staff of Deb deVries, Ellie Everitt, Michele Niblack, Kerri Pakalnis, Joanne Chute, and Cloe Gerri. I can’t believe it’s April! We are thinking about the last year and deciding what to do for the rest of this year and beyond. Here are some key learnings: • We wanted to have the most merchandise when the most people were here -- this was challenging as I wasn’t really sure how much merchandise to order in the first place! While we tried to focus on vendors where we could get additional items easily, not all vendors worked that way. • Different than last year, we want merchandise and the store open all year. • As the season winds down we will continue to keep “staples” in the store: caps, polo shirts, towels. • Honor System is the only way we are able to stay open when the club is open. • Women have better handwriting than men -- or all of the men who are members are doctors or a doctor taught them how to write. Women will write out the SKU perfectly and the men will not. What can we do to make that better? Would taking a picture of the tag and sending it to the Ship’s Store email be easier? • Men shop in the store-who knew? • We are excited to have our new Dock Master Missy on board. We are going to have Jeff build some shelves in her office and display a selection of Riverside Marina logoed items as we think boaters will buy items when they come to dock and need to see her. • We are doing a fair amount of “special order” items -- usually items in a size we are out of or sometimes a different color. We can’t guarantee that we can get you the item you want but we will certainly try. We are looking into easier ways to let us know what you want like sending to a Ship’s Store email. Thanks for your support and patience this year! Deb deVries

Club Calendar Building 101 Many folks know that I manage the Club Calendar. Some of you have asked how we plan it each year. Our General Manager Mark Felbinger, Dining Room/Food & BeverageManager Carrie Brooks, Dining & Banquet Manager Pam Dorr, and Chef Jono Osburn all are key players in this process! So how does the Club calendar for the next year get built? The day after Blessing of the Fleet in mid-February is when the process begins for the next fiscal year! The first thing done is to place Annual Yacht Club Events on the Calendar: • Colors, mostly the 3rd Friday of the month except for Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, and St. Patrick's Day. Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day make sense, but you ask, “Why St. Patrick’s Day?” Well, the Colors ceremony for March is always later so it does not conflict with St. Patrick's Day Happy Hour. This was done years ago by a Commodore to maintain the solemnity of the ceremony. So, as you can see, our Bridge Events take priority! Next, all Club Cruising Events are placed on the calendar. This is where the conflicts begin! Day Cruises and Extended Cruises get added to the calendar. Dockage constraints influence the dates of these cruises as well as other challenges! A planned extended cruise rarely goes on its initially planned dates because so many outside factors influence it. Marco Island Events are placed on the FY2023 Calendar (Holiday Boat Parade, Holiday Street Parade) along with the standard holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, and Easter. Some sunset cruises then get moved due to where Thanksgiving and Christmas fall . • Commodore’s Ball • Blessing of the Fleet • Boaters' Night (1st Wed of the month) • Sunset Cruises (4th Wed of the month) Next, we start filling in with our Signature Events blocking dates so that Pam knows what dates she has available to sell for outside banquets. Weddings sometimes are planned out for more than a year, so we need to honor commitments we have already made. Angela Holt, Chair of Member Events, then asks for dates available for planning events. She has to quickly book entertainment NOW as performers are already booking for Season 2023. We have to support our Clubhouse, non-Boating Membership and Staff. We have to make sense of who will attend events and when. So, that is how we then plan Wine & Dine and other dining events. Chef gets consulted to see if he can have dining upstairs or downstairs while still having a Club Event. Try fitting in Twilight Golf, Couple’s Bridge, Men’s Bridge, Book Club and Fishing Club (monthly sub-groups) and then add in weekly activities of Mah Jongg, Ladies’ Bridge, Ladies’ Canasta, and Mexican Train and you see how complicated it gets! The calendar is an ever-changing document so that is why we present you one for the month and the outlook so you can plan when to be at your Club! That is why we have dining events like Seafood Fun, Cooking with Chef or Fla-mingle Progressive Dinners popping up now that Covid protocols have relaxed. The April calendar, the April through the rest of the season calendar and the DRAFT for our Fiscal Year 2023 (Oct 2022- Sep 2023) are all available as links within this Anchorlines email . We want you to plan to be at as many Club events as possible! The calendar on the website will be updated soon for FY2023. It has many of the planned dates now! Know that you can download the calendar from the website right into your personal calendar! Vicki Bretthauer

There’s a Daytime Activity for Everyone at MIYC! A q u a f i t a t M I Y C Aquafit classes take place at the MIMA pool at 10:30 am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. Contact Coordinator Peggy Frazier with questions or if you need to change the time. frazier@chartermi.net

C OMMUNITY S ERVICE – F OR T HE L OVE OF C ATS Some of you may have heard of For the Love of Cats. They are the no-kill rescue organization that is celebrating 20 years of caring for the cats on Marco Island and throughout Collier County. The vision of the organization is to see a world where all cats’ lives matter. They began their mission by fixing the thousands of free roaming cats on Marco Island and the surrounding communities, rescuing and adopting the kittens and abandoned house cats. Their programs expanded over time to meet the current needs of the underserved community. These programs include a fund for urgent and wellness veterinary care, spay/neuter costs for rescued cats and kittens, a county-wide adoption and promotion for senior cats, a pet food pantry, and an FGCU scholarship fund.
For the Love of Cats was founded by Jim and Jan Rich. They continue to be fulltime volunteers of the organization. With the help of a wonderful family of volunteers and the financial support of the community, the organization continues to add to their impact that includes rescuing and adopting over 2,600 cats and kittens, preventing the birth and suffering of over 575,000 kittens in the wild, sterilizing over 2,400 cats throughout the county, saving the lives of over 400 cats
in urgent need of veterinary care, assisting in the adoption of almost 200 senior cats countywide and providing over 50,000 lbs. of dog and cat food for families in need. Last year, For the Love of Cats funded a partial year scholarship for an FGCU biology student on a career path in veterinary medicine with the help of corporate partners. They plan to expand the program to pay for a full year in 2022. This year, the organization also plans to initiate partnerships with other animal organizations in the county to develop large scale spay/neuter events for communities in need. For the Love of Cats is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is completely funded by the generosity of the public. Donations can be made through their website www.fortheloveofcatsfl.com or text LOVECATS to 44321. Jan and Jim say, “Purrs of thanks!”

Mariners Fund The Mariners Fund is a way to finance extraordinary MIYC needs; things outside of the normal budget; Club enhancements that will make the member experience better and up to date. For example, the Burgee Bar renovation was made possible entirely by member donations. The bar was expanded, new drop-down window covers were installed and attractive curtains and valances were added. The Mariners Fund also paid to upgrade the Club’s sound system and supported the installation of a new dimmer system to enhance lighting in the Harbour Room. All these improvements were made possible by the generous support of our members. A donation to the Mariners Fund is a symbol of MIYC member commitment. How Can I Donate? You can make a general donation or donate for a specific project. We have identified a number of needs and wishes, which are listed in a binder just below the recognition plaque in the lobby. If you’d like to donate, please download the Mariners Fund Donation Form, on which you can indicate the project you wish to support, the amount of donation and how you wish to pay (separate check, credit card or Club monthly statement.) If there is something special you would like to see happen and would like to financially support, please let any member of the Mariners Fund Committee know. Mariners Fund Recognition Levels A Mariners Fund recognition plaque in the lobby hallway honors the cumulative contributions Members have made. Bronze $ 500 Silver $ 2,500 Gold $10,000 Platinum $20,000 Diamond $50,000 Sapphire $100,000 Final Voyage – If you have enjoyed the Club, please consider a gift from your estate.
