Hub Labels Invests In DuPont Technology

FINAT Launches Recycling Initiative FINAT, the European self-adhesive labelling industry association, has launched ‘CELAB-Europe’, a new ini- tiative designed to create a circular economy for self-adhesive label mate- rials in Europe. By establishing a rep- resentative value-chain organization, CELAB-Europe will work to identify and collectively scale recycling and re-use solutions for the self-adhesive label liner and matrix materials. The initiative aims to develop a sustainable and circular business model for more than 75 percent of the used liner and matrix materials in Europe by 2025. Circular Economy The CELAB-Europe consortium is part of CELAB, a wider global self-ad- hesive industry initiative to create a sustainable self-adhesive labeling industry by offering solutions and providing education to enable matrix and liner recycling. CELAB-Europe was created earlier this year by four labelstock suppliers (Arconvert-Ritrama,Avery Dennison, Herma, UPM Raflatac) and FINAT.

Global Sleeve Labels Market To Reach $18.6 Billion The global sleeve labels market is estimated to value more than $18.6 billion in terms of value by the end of 2027 and it predicted to grow at a Compound An- nual Growth Rate of 5.4 percent during the forecast period of 2019 to 2027, according to Coherent Market Insights market study. Expanding personal care and cosmetic industry is projected to show lucrative growth opportunity to the market of sleeve labels. According to the LoudCloud- Health.com, the cosmetic industry is growing faster today than ever before with an estimated market value of almost $805 billion by 2023. It is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.14 percent from 2018 to 2023. Therefore, the growing personal care industry will favor market growth over the fore- cast period. Growing competition from China-based sleeve la- bels manufacturers as sleeve label manufacturers presence is increasing China due to which interna- tional players are experiencing stiff competition from these players. This factor is expected to restrict the market growth. According to the Coherent Mar- ket Insights, China-based sleeve label manufacturers quote 15 percent to 20 percent lower prices than

those quoted by established players in the market. This factor is negatively affecting the market growth of the sleeve label. On the basis of End-use, the food & beverages domi- nated the global Sleeve labels market in 2018 with a 65 percent of market share in terms of value, followed by health care and personal Care, respectively. Paper-Based Packaging Promotion Program Renewed The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has pub- lished the results of the continuance referendum vote for the Paper and Packaging Board (P+PB). In the referendum, 64 percent of manufacturers and importers voting, who represented 76 percent of the volume of paper and paper-based packaging voting in the referendum, were in favor of continuing the program. “In its first six years the program established a united brand presence for the paper and packaging industry, drove engagement with our industry’s products, and even launched our lovable character ambassadors,” stated MaryAnne Hansan, President of P+PB.“In the fu- ture, the campaign will help educate consumers about the industry’s strong story of sustainable practices.”

Innovations in Wastewater Treatment from the Zero-Discharge, Closed-Loop Experts

Nearly 20 players from across the label value chain in Europe have since committed to support the initia- tive, including raw materials producers (papers, films, silicones, adhesives), labelstock producers, and label companies. FINAT will host the project, with manage- ment undertaken by SLOOP Consulting of The Neth- erlands (who were also involved in the foundation and management of the flexible packaging consor- tium CEFLEX). CELAB-Europe welcomes all partners from across the broad recycling and logistics industry value chain, as well as brand owners and retailers. CELAB-Europe has created a set of deliverables to be completed by 2025 which have been assigned to four interconnected ‘workstreams’: Data mining : Geographical ‘heat mapping’ of mate- rial usage to identify where materials become waste, and in what quantities. Recycling solutions : Identifying, proving, and sup- porting the development of sustainable end markets for repurposed/recycled liner and matrix materials. Logistics : Connecting with the European transporta- tion and recycling sector to develop and optimise col- lection systems for liner and matrix. Legal framework :To monitor and advocate the de- velopment of regulations and guidelines that support the development of a sustainable business model for recycling in Europe.

Jesse Hood, Quality and Continuous Im- provement Director explains,“We had a lot of variables that were causing our plates to have inconsistencies which effected people downstream and their output. The DuPont Cyrel® Dryer is used to complete the plate making process.

Hub also used the opportunity to invest in additional plate equipment including the Esko Crys- tal CDI,Crystal XPS Exposure, Print ControlWizard and Crystal Screening. With the upgrade in July 2020, Hub Labels has been able to achieve print quality that rivals offset and digital print quality. FTA Europe Hopes For Standardized Flexo Press Test FTA Europe is inviting flexo printers to be part of its project on developing a standardized test form that checks the quality of flexo printing presses. “We would like flexo machine operators to com- plete a short survey,” the association said, “that takes no longer than five minutes to complete, answering questions related to their machinery and the checks they currently perform. The results of this survey will help the project team to pin down the most important aspects for a new standardized, European test form.” A standardized test form for printers will help to compare the quality of different presses, evaluating technical features, detecting defects, and verifying out- put quality. “Our team of experts includes all the key machine suppliers in Europe,” said the association, “as well as printers and flexo experts. We need the input from printers across Europe in order to design a test form that best suits their needs.”
