SUMMER 2026
A Note From Our Director Hello and welcome to the Summer edition of The Connection! I hope this issue finds you well and enjoying the sunshine and longer days of summer. Summer at the library is one of our busiest and most exciting seasons, and we have a wonderful lineup of programs and events planned for all ages across the Cabell County Public Library system. I cannot wait to see our libraries buzzing with energy and community all summer long. One of the things I look forward to most each year is our Summer Reading Program. There is something for everyone at the library for every age. I encourage you to stop by your local library, attend a program, register for Summer Reading, and discover everything your library has to offer. Studies consistently show that children who read during the summer months are more likely to retain their reading skills and academic progress, while some even improve over the break. Preventing “summer learning loss” is incredibly important, and libraries play a vital role in helping children continue learning in ways that are engaging, creative, and enjoyable. I would also like to take a moment to warmly welcome our newest Branch Manager, Tera Merritt, to the Barboursville Library team. Tera brings a wealth of library knowledge, experience, and passion for public service, and we are thrilled to have her join the Cabell County Public Library family. I hope you will join me in giving her a warm welcome. We are excited to announce that preparations are underway for our annual Library Gala, our largest fundraiser of the year. This year’s theme, Into the Woods: A Grimm Affair, promises an enchanting evening inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Save the Date information is listed below, and we would love for you to join us. We are also seeking corporate sponsors and community partners, with every dollar raised supporting literacy efforts, educational programming, outreach initiatives, and welcoming spaces for our community. Thank you, as always, for believing in your public library!
Stop by the Main Library this summer and strike a pose with our new “Unearth Your Story” dinosaur photo backdrop. Snap a photo, tag us on Facebook, and sign up for Summer Reading while you are here. We cannot wait to see everyone’s prehistoric adventures. Check out the staff photos below for inspiration!

It’s Been An Honor and a Privilege. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as President of the Friends of Cabell County Public Library for the past two years. Preparing this message provided a welcome opportunity to reflect on our journey together. I was a relatively new board member when I stepped into this role, and following Jim Casto – a long-term pillar of our board—was admittedly intimidating. I am profoundly grateful for Jim’s consistent support and guidance during my tenure. Our success is a testament to the work of our dedicated volunteers, the generosity of our donors, and the partnership we share with our library staff. Together we have strengthened our library to continue to provide vital services to our community. Because of your support we were able to: • Fund Summer Reading Programs for both children and adults • Sponsor Bolt for Books in support of the Tri-State Literacy Council • Host successful book sales in February, June, and October • Launch Friends Social Media Page Our new Development Committee is already hard at work on creative ideas for membership growth and new tiers to better serve our supporters. I am thrilled to welcome Jan Flinchum as our next board president. With Jan as president and Sarah Walling as vice- president the board is in incredibly capable hands. I look forward to supporting them in my new capacity as past president. I encourage you to continue exploring our resources and supporting our mission. Our next book sale is June 5 and 6, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing you there! Thank you for the privilege of serving. Cheri Lindberg, President Friends of the Cabell County Public library
