CELEBRATE AMERICA’S 250 TH Constitution Week September 17 – 23
A Note From Our Director Hello, everyone!
I hope you’re ready for a wonderful fall season! As you flip through this issue of The Connection, you’ll find plenty of exciting programs and events planned by our staff. More importantly, I hope you’ll be reminded of something we never want our community to forget: your public library is here for you through every season of life. Maybe you’re bringing your little one to storytime, looking for homework or research help, searching for a quiet place to study, joining a book club, learning something new, or simply looking for your next great read. Perhaps you need a computer, Wi-Fi, printing, or another service, or maybe you just want to browse the shelves and stay awhile. Whatever brings you through our doors, there is a place for you at your library. For some members of our community, that need may be more immediate. Our Information & Referral staff at the Main Library help connect community members with resources for food, clothing, shelter, rental assistance, and other basic needs. Sometimes, knowing where to start is the hardest part, and your library can be that starting place. With students of all ages heading back to school, fall is also the perfect time to rediscover everything your library has to offer. September is Library Card Sign Up Month, and if you don’t have a card, now is a great time to get one. A library card opens the door to books, digital materials, research tools, programs, technology, and resources throughout our library system. Already have a card? Encourage someone you know to get theirs, too. And while I have your attention, I have to invite you to one of my favorite nights of the year! On Saturday, October 24, beginning at 6:00 p.m., we’ll host our annual Library Gala, Into the Woods: A Grimm Affair. Step into the wonderfully dark and whimsical world of Grimm fairy tales for an evening of dinner, drinks, dancing, entertainment, and surprises. Come dressed in costume or cocktail attire and join us for a magical night. The Gala is our largest annual fundraiser, with proceeds supporting programs, equipment, furnishings, resources, and other needs throughout our library system. Tickets are on sale now, and sponsorship opportunities are still available. We’d love to see you there! There’s plenty to look forward to beyond this fall, too. Our Library of Things will continue to grow, with more opportunities to borrow items you might not expect to find at a library. We have some fun things coming! Finally, I hope you’ll remember that supporting your library doesn’t always mean making a donation. Using your library supports your library. Check out a book, attend a program, bring your child to storytime, download an eBook, become a Friend of the Library, or tell a neighbor about something we offer. Or simply stop by to say hello. Because at the end of the day, these libraries belong to you. We hope you’ll spend part of your fall with us. There is always a place for you at the Cabell County Public Library. NSF Graduate Research Fellow who has worked on research projects with the Green Bank Observatory and Deana White is Executive Director of West Virginia Alliance for STEM and the Arts. Small Town Universe explores life in the remote town of Greenbank, West Virginia and the grassroots effort of the community to preserve the Greenbank Observatory for future generations. Appalachian Strings Initiative Concert Friday, September 25, 4:00 p.m. Join us for a live concert by Appalachian Strings Initiative, a performance ensemble that brings high quality string music performance to community spaces in southeast Ohio and surrounding areas of the Appalachian region. Featuring Barboursville native, Lily Chongswatdi, this concert for children and families is sure to be a hit with your little ones!
Santa Muerte & Day of the Dead Monday, October 26, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Presented by Road Scholar, join religion scholar Brian Carwana (via Zoom) for an introduction to this devotion centered on Saint Death – or the “Bony Lady” – a female figure often likened to the Grim Reaper. This lecture also explores the Day of the Dead. Together these practices offer insight into how death is understood, commemorated, and given meaning in Mexico and other Latin American cultures. Expect a fun learning experience with live Q&A, good conversation, and refreshments.

The Cabell County Public Library invites the community to step Into the Woods: A Grimm Affair for its 23 rd Annual Gala. For one enchanting evening, the library will transform into a mysterious forest inspired by the timeless tales of the Brothers Grimm. The evening will feature charcuterie, signature cocktails, entertainment, and dancing. Guests are encouraged to attend in costume or cocktail attire and prepare for an evening unlike any other.

The Main Branch National Library Card Sign-up September A library card gives you free access to much more than books, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, Streaming Music, Movies, online learning, and research databases. A Note from Your New Friends President Hello all and welcome to fall! First, I would like to thank everyone for welcoming me as your new Friends of the Library President. I am excited for the year ahead and look forward to working with all of you to support our library and the wonderful things it does for our community. The Friends are working hard for the book sale coming soon, so come find the book you have been searching for or find one you never knew you wanted. Georgia could always use help getting ready for the sale every Monday morning, so if you have some time to spare, we would love to have you help. The book sale is always a great way to find some treasures while supporting the library at the same time. Friends, please read through this Connection and attend as many wonderful programs as you can. There is always something happening at the library, and your support and participation mean so much. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Summer Reading program, it rocked as always! We have the Gala in October and fun is an understatement for the wonderful evening!
