In this FUTURE journal, we travel to Napa Valley, where each harvest is an act of faith in what lies ahead. Grapes are gathered at their peak, yet their story is only beginning. rough time, crasmanship and patience, they become vintages destined for dinners, celebrations and journeys still years away.

Napa Valley Uncorked

A seven-night route through château terraces, historic

cellars, sunrise skies, vintage railcars and intimate inns —by Denise Copeland

“Wine is meant to be with food. That’s the point of it.” — Julia Child

N apa Valley runs north through California in orderly rows of vines, pale stone cellars and sun-warmed hills, with cool mornings giving way to dry aernoons scented with rosemary, earth and oak. e landscape appears peaceful, but Napa rewards a little ambition. Wine waits behind iron gates and inside mountain caves. Breakfast may arrive beneath a Baccarat chandelier. A sunrise balloon rises while most vacationers are still negotiating with the snooze button. is itinerary begins at home, with a ight search open on one screen and a rental-car reservation on another. It then moves from the southern edge of the valley to Calistoga, trading airport uorescent lighting for sparkling wine, Cabernet, chef-prepared breakfasts and a rental car that spends most tasting days parked with dignity. First Things First: Booking the Flight San Francisco International Airport is the practical starting point for this trip. SFO sits about 58 miles from Napa Valley, and the drive to downtown Napa generally takes one to two hours, depending on trac. Oakland International is slightly closer at 51 miles, while Sacramento International is 63 miles away. Sonoma County Airport is only 45 miles from Napa Valley, though ight options tend to be more limited. Travelers with a convenient connection into Sonoma County should certainly compare it before committing.

For the broadest choice of schedules and rental cars, book a nonstop ight to SFO if one is available. Aim to land before noon. An early arrival provides time to collect luggage, retrieve the car and reach Napa before aernoon trac begins behaving like aernoon trac. Reserve the rental car when booking the ight. A premium sedan or compact luxury SUV suits the trip better than a convertible. e convertible sounds glamorous until luggage, wind, sunscreen and a winery purchase all demand the same small patch of trunk. A comfortable vehicle with good climate control, supportive seats and adequate cargo space wins this argument. At SFO, the Blue Line AirTrain operates around the clock and connects every terminal with the airport’s centralized Rental Car Center. Complete the rental company’s online check-in before departure, add an additional driver if needed, and photograph the vehicle before leaving the garage. None of this is romantic, but neither is discussing a mysterious wheel scratch at 6 a.m. on departure day. Keep the rental car for airport transfers, hotel changes and sober sightseeing. On wine-tasting days, hire a private driver. Beau Wine Tours builds customized chaueured itineraries and can help coordinate winery appointments and dining reservations. is costs more than appointing one member of the party as the permanently thirsty chaueur, but it is considerably more gracious.

e valley stretches approximately 35 miles from American Canyon to Calistoga. at sounds compact until a tractor, roadwork or an irresistible vineyard view changes the schedule. Napa’s pleasures are best approached with two winery appointments per day, a proper lunch and enough space between reservations to prevent the vacation from resembling a corporate retreat. Day One: A So Landing in Napa Aer leaving SFO, choose the route according to appetite and available daylight. e drive across the Golden Gate Bridge oers the grander introduction, though it can add time. e Bay Bridge route is usually more direct. If hunger has already become a voting member of the group, take the practical road. e scenery begins to change north of the city. Concrete gives way to open hills. Eucalyptus and oak appear beside the road. By the time the rst vineyards come into view, the airport feels farther away than the mileage suggests. Check into e Setting Inn Napa Valley, a quiet property between Napa and Yountville. Its Deluxe King rooms include vineyard views, outdoor terraces, replaces, heated bathroom oors and soaking tubs. Breakfast from Bouchon Bakery is delivered daily, which means the rst major decision each morning may concern a croissant rather than a boarding group. continued

Plan a casual dinner at Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa. e 40,000-square-foot market gathers independently operated food businesses beneath one roof, including Hog Island Oyster Bar, e Fatted Calf, Ritual Coee, Model Bakery, an artisan cheese shop, chocolate, empanadas and gelato. is is an excellent rst-night arrangement because no one has to agree on a single cuisine. One traveler can pursue oysters, another can investigate charcuterie, and a third can announce that gelato is a reasonable entrée aer a long ight. Napa does not judge. Napa simply oers another spoon.

with cheese, charcuterie or caviar. Guests with theatrical instincts can reserve the Art of Sabrage, which introduces the ceremonial opening of a sparkling-wine bottle with a saber. It is an unusually rened way to handle a cork. Do not hurry away aer the nal pour. e broad staircase, château façade and vineyard terraces provide much of the visual grandeur people associate with Napa. Morning light also tends to be kinder to both the landscape and the photographer. e driver then heads north toward Oakville and Far Niente, a 19th-century stone winery surrounded by gardens, cork trees and hillside caves. Visits are by appointment, and the private Legacy Tour provides a thoughtful introduction to the estate. e route moves through the historic winery and caves before a seated tasting of Far Niente Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, paired with local cheeses. For a larger splurge, the Cave Collection tasting draws from rare library wines and adds seasonal food pairings prepared by the estate chef.

Return to the inn early. e serious appointments begin tomorrow.

Day Two: Bubbles, Caviar and Old Stone e private driver arrives aer breakfast, which is when the rental car receives its rst full day of rest. e opening appointment belongs at Domaine Carneros, where a château overlooks the rolling hills of the Carneros region. e southern end of Napa is cooled by air moving inland from San Pablo Bay, creating favorable conditions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Tastings at Domaine Carneros are seated and hosted. A ight of sparkling wine on the terrace oers an elegant start, particularly

on the gardens, cellars and hospitality. e visitor’s role is simpler: admire the stonework, pay attention to the wine and resist pretending to understand every vintage variation aer the second Cabernet. Dinner takes place in Yountville at Bouchon Bistro, omas Keller’s French bistro. Its zinc bar, mosaic oor, antique xtures and hand- painted mural create a Parisian atmosphere without asking anyone to board another ight. e menu is built around French standards such as oysters, steak frites, roast chicken, croque madame and lemon tart. Order with the condence of people who have employed a driver. A shellsh platter makes a polished beginning, followed by steak frites or roast chicken. Lemon tart provides a clean nish. Aer a day devoted to sparkling wine and Cabernet, coee is less an aerthought than an operational necessity. Day Three: Napa From the Air and the Rails e alarm rings at an hour usually reserved for bakers, vineyard workers and vacationers who made bold promises several months earlier. Napa Valley Balloons collects passengers in Yountville before sunrise. Coee, tea and Bouchon Bakery pastries are served before the group departs for the launch site. Ballooning is weather-dependent, and the nal launch location can change according to wind conditions. e adventure begins with bursts of ame and the gradual ination of an enormous fabric envelope. On the ground, the burner sounds dramatic. In the air, the sensation becomes surprisingly calm. e basket rises above vines, country roads and geometric blocks of farmland while the mountains frame the valley on either side. At this height, Napa’s famous estates become small details in a much larger agricultural landscape. Vineyards form precise stripes across the earth. Morning mist collects in low areas. e rising sun changes the hills from gray to gold. continued

Once back in Napa, dinner can be as small as cheese, fruit and bread in the room. Aer a multi-course train lunch, declaring an emergency need for another large meal may be enthusiasm speaking rather than hunger. tasting that placed California wine beside respected French bottles and changed the international perception of Napa Valley.

A modern visitor center frames the vineyard views through stone and glass. Tastings focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and the distinctions among the estate vineyards. Parts of the visit may enter caves maintained at approximately 50 to 55 degrees, so carry a light sweater even on a hot aernoon. Cashmere has never had a more responsible assignment. Lunch follows at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch in St. Helena. e kitchen’s menu draws on estate-grown wine, olive oil, honey, produce and grass-fed beef and lamb. Depending on the season, lunch might involve burrata with estate olive oil, wood-grilled vegetables, meatballs with creamy grits or a grass-fed cheeseburger. e aernoon appointment is Joseph Phelps Vineyards, reached along a winding road east of St. Helena. e estate’s historic Guest Center looks across vines and hills, and its tastings range from a seated introduction featuring Insignia to library-wine programs with seasonal food pairings. Reserve the Collector’s Tasting for access to current and library selections, including Insignia, accompanied by two culinary pairings. Guests who want a more food-centered appointment can choose Taste of Place, built around seasonal ingredients and estate wines. Two substantial tastings are enough. Napa may be one of the few destinations where spitting is regarded as evidence of excellent judgment. It is also acceptable to leave wine in the glass. e goal is to appreciate the aernoon, not defeat it. Dinner is at e Charter Oak in St. Helena. e restaurant serves family-style food built around local ingredients, including vegetables grown at its own 3.5-acre farm nearby. e hearth anchors the kitchen, sending out grilled meats, seafood and vegetables with little unnecessary decoration. Start with the restaurant’s bread and cultured butter. Add raw farm vegetables, a salad and something from the hearth. e dining room’s warm wood, brick and open re suit a day spent

Pedaling through vineyard country gives the landscape a scale that disappears behind a windshield. e air changes near shaded trees. Irrigation lines, old barns and vineyard workers become visible. Aer arriving at the hilltop winery, follow a self-guided route through the property while sampling three wines and learning about Sterling’s winemaking. e tasting concludes with two additional wines and a cheese board on the Southview Terrace, weather permitting. For a more formal option, the Hilltop Experience includes ve winery- exclusive wines paired with local cheese and charcuterie. Every tasting includes the round-trip gondola ride, as ride-only tickets are not oered. Book well in advance and choose a morning appointment during warmer months. e gondola closes when temperatures exceed 100 degrees. Aer descending the hillside, spend the aernoon at Indian Springs Calistoga. of four vintages of Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. e exercise demonstrates how the same wine changes with age and vintage conditions. For additional movement, book the Estate Walking Tour or Vineyard Tour. e pairing of Schramsberg and Chateau Montelena creates a satisfying progression from underground caves to a hilltop château. It also provides enough visual material for an entire travel feature before anyone photographs lunch. Return to e Francis House for the pool, sauna or salt room. Dinner is two blocks away in walkable downtown Calistoga, allowing the rental car another quiet evening. Lovina serves dinner in a historic house and operates as a tip-free restaurant, with menu prices supporting employee compensation and benets. Return to e Francis House for one nal evening around the re pit. Sterling has already supplied ve wines, a trip above the vineyards and one of Napa Valley’s nest views. vineyard views and contemporary privacy. e Francis House is the luxury nale, especially for travelers who prefer a small property with a pool, wellness amenities and elaborate breakfast. Practical Planning Notes Reserve the trip in this order: ights, lodging, balloon, Wine Train, private driver, winery tastings, restaurants and spa treatments. Harvest season generally runs from August through October and requires the earliest planning. Spring oers green hills and budding vines. Winter brings quieter tasting rooms, green slopes and yellow mustard owers. Most of the wineries in this itinerary require reservations and admit only guests age 21 or older. Policies, prices and available programs change, so conrm every detail when booking.

Do not schedule a morning winery visit before the ight. Wine luggage, freeway trac and boarding deadlines form a trio with very little charm.

e rental car that spent the week moving north now retraces the valley in a single sweep. Calistoga gives way to St. Helena, Oakville, Yountville and Napa. Familiar signs pass in reverse. e vineyards continue their daily work, unconcerned with checkout times. Napa Valley’s luxury is easy to see in château staircases, private tastings and glass-domed railcars. Its deeper pleasure comes from contrast: cold caves aer a hot road, a bicycle aer a chaueured sedan, a quiet eight- room inn aer a busy dining room, and mineral water aer several days of Cabernet. at balance turns a wine trip into a full account of the valley, with enough adventure to justify the alarm clock and enough comfort to forgive it. A Few Alternate Inns Worth Considering For travelers who want more traditional bed-and-breakfast character in Calistoga, Embrace Calistoga oers ve individually designed rooms in an 1873 European-style inn. Weekend brunch is served on the porch, while weekday guests receive breakfast vouchers for local restaurant partners. Each evening includes a gathering with local wine and cheese, sometimes accompanied by live music or a visiting winemaker.

Bring layers. Balloon mornings are cool, aernoons can be hot, and wine caves remain cold throughout the year.

Limit appointments to two wineries per day. Generous tasting pours accumulate quickly, and several programs include food.

Use the rental car for airport travel and hotel transfers. Arrange chaueured transportation for tasting days. Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars specically warns that rideshare service can be unreliable at its property. Leave suitcase space for wine, or arrange compliant shipping through the wineries. Six bottles purchased separately have a curious habit of becoming a case.

Inn St. Helena remains the best choice for Main Street convenience and a true breakfast-chef B&B atmosphere. e Setting Inn works well for

And somewhere between the rst signs of fall and the realization that anksgiving is only a few months away, singles everywhere start wondering: Who am I going to spend the season with? Welcome to what has become known as cung season! e time of year when the desire for companionship tends to move to the front of the line.

paper will be the right t in real life. Sometimes the person who surprises you becomes the person you cannot imagine living without. Sometimes attraction grows as you get to know someone’s personality, values, humor, and character. at does not mean ignoring incompatibility or forcing something that isn’t there, it means being willing to look beyond the instant gratication of modern dating and give the right connection enough room to reveal itself. September is also a good time to take an honest look at how you have been approaching dating. If you have spent months swiping, matching, chatting, and starting over without nding the relationship you want, doing more of the same is unlikely to produce a dierent result. If you

have been waiting for the right person to simply appear, perhaps it is time to become more proactive. And if you have been limiting yourself to the same type of person, the same places, or the same dating routine, consider the possibility that your next relationship may require a dierent approach. is is where professional matchmaking oers something that an algorithm cannot: a thoughtful, personal process focused on compatibility, not just convenience. e goal is not to introduce you to as many people as possible. It is to introduce you to people who have the potential to t into the life you actually want.

ere is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting someone special to share the season with. e problem begins when the season starts making the decisions for you. Cung season can create a sense of urgency that encourages people to choose availability over compatibility, settle for a connection that is merely convenient, or rush something that would have been better given time to develop. Aer working with thousands of singles, we’ve learned that the biggest dating mistake isn’t always choosing the wrong person. Sometimes, it’s waiting so long to start looking that every new

connection suddenly feels like it has to become something immediately. Nobody wants to realize in December that their dating strategy was essentially “hope for the best.” at is exactly why September can be such an important month for your dating life. September gives you something December cannot: time without pressure. If you meet someone now, there is an opportunity to actually get to know each other before the holidays arrive. You can have a few dinners, discover what you have in common, learn how you communicate, and see whether the connection continues to grow. You are not trying to nd someone simply to ll a seat at anksgiving dinner, you are giving a relationship the chance to become something real. Attraction may happen quickly, but compatibility, trust, comfort, and genuine connection take time. e best relationships are rarely built because two people were racing toward a deadline. Perhaps that is one of the biggest misconceptions about modern dating: that you should know immediately whether someone is “the one.” A rst date is not a nal decision, it is an introduction. Not every promising connection begins with reworks, and not every person who looks perfect on

So enjoy everything that fall has to oer! Go to the dinners. Attend the parties. Make the weekend plans. Enjoy the football games and the holiday traditions when they arrive. Don’t let the calendar pressure you into choosing someone simply because you want someone. Instead, use this season as an opportunity to be thoughtful about who you want beside you—not just for the holidays, but for everything that comes aer them. Cung season may be seasonal, but your relationship shouldn’t be. As September begins, we encourage you to stop waiting for the perfect moment and start creating opportunities to meet the right people. e holidays will arrive whether you are prepared for them or not. Your love life doesn’t have to be le to chance. Call. Start. Love. A cross two acres in Jupiter Farms, Dr. Amanda Pike has cultivated a landscape with an impressive résumé. It feeds her family, supports her work in art therapy, welcomes children and community groups, and demonstrates how an ordinary Florida yard can become far more productive. More than 200 species of edible plants grow throughout the property alongside chickens, quail and beehives. Together, they form a working ecosystem that provides an estimated 70 percent of the Pike family’s groceries. Instead of devoting the acreage to expanses of lawn and purely decorative landscaping, Pike has created a place where beauty and usefulness grow side by side.
