QUÉBEC MISSING PERSON CASE HAS HAWKESBURY LINK

Guy Salicco, a resident PGUIF7JMMBHFPG4U&VHÍOFJO&BTU)BXLFT - bury Township, related during the Friday press conference his story of an encounter with woman who he thinks may have been Bergeron. Salicco was living in Hawkesbury in 2009, near the corner of Lansdowne Street and Cameron Street. In the early-morning hours one night in December, the doorbell rang. 8IFOIFHPUVQUPPQFOUIFEPPS 4BMJDDP found a young woman, wet and cold from the rainy weather that night, standing on his doorstep. She was dressed in jeans and a white T-shirt and wearing a small jacket. The woman asked for directions to Cham- berland Street and then asked if she could use Salicco’s phone. She made a call but got no answer. She stayed long enough to towel her hair dry but declined an offer for a ride over to Chamberland Street, saying she would walk. She apologized to Salicco for disturbing him so early in the morning and left. It wasn’t until Salicco later saw an article, with photos, on the Internet about the Bergeron missing persons case that he realized it might have been Marilyn Bergeron who had appeared on his doorstep that night. The woman had blonde hair instead of brown like Bergeron, but he said that other than that, the woman
looked like Marilyn Bergeron. Salicco called the local OPP detachment to report the incident. The report was forwarded to the Québec City police who sent investigators in March 2010 to interview Salicco about his possible encounter with the missing woman. Salicco later contacted the family to report what he had seen. The mystery The CCTV footage February 17 from the ABM kiosk shows the missing woman looking over her shoulder several times. A detailed brief provided to media notes that Bergeron phoned her mother February 10, saying she is «afraid of staying at her apartment» but she never explains why, even after she arri- ved at the family home the next day. Marilyn Bergeron has been missing for more than a decade but her family thinks she may have gone to Hawkesbury soon after she left her home in Québec City. “They believe their missing daughter was seen in the Hawkesbury area a few years ago,” said Marc Bellemare, during a press conference with regional, provincial and national media October 29 at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex in Hawkesbury. Marilyn Bergeron, 24, was last seen February 17, 2008, when she left the house in Québec City where she lived with her parents, Michel Bergeron and Andrée Béchard. She said she was going for a short walk and would be back in a few hours. Her family still waits for her return. «They have been searching for her for the last 15 years,» said Bellemare, a Québec City lawyer and former provincial justice minister and attorney general, who is helping the Bergeron family with their efforts to find the missing woman. The investigation A Québec City police investigation has evi- dence documenting Bergeron’s movements after she left the house up to the point when a CCTV camera captured images of her trying to withdraw money from a caisse populaire ABM on the morning that she left the house. Later in the afternoon she bought a coffee at a café, paying for it with her credit
card. Since then there has been no further information about her whereabouts. The police investigation is limited to the Québec City area. The family has lob- bied, without success, to have the case turned over to the Québec Sûreté, which has more resources available to conduct a province-wide missing person investigation. Meanwhile the family, with the aid of Belle- mare, have worked on publicizing the case of their missing daughter through the regular news media and also through social media. During the period from 2008 to 2019, more than 170 reports have come in about either sightings of Bergeron or tips on her possible whereabouts. More than half of those reports are from around Québec. Prostate cancer • There are three main risk factors for getting prostate cancer, all of which you cannot change. They are: • Getting older: men over the age of 50 are more at risk • Family history: just like breast cancer, if someone in your family has had prostate cancer, it may increase your risk • Your race: Black men are more likely to get prostate cancer. Experts are unsure why but suggest it might be linked to genes The NHS list the following as symptoms of prostate cancer: • Needing to pee more frequently – especially during the night • Needing to rush to the toilet • Difficulty in starting to pee • Straining or taking a long time while peeing • Weak flow • Feeling that your bladder has not fully emptied • Blood in your urine or semen • These symptoms do not mean you have prostate cancer.
However, if you have any of the symptoms listed above, or if something doesn’t seem right, go see your doctor. Seeing your doctor for a simple prostate exam is the best way to check everything is ok or catch it early.
Having a prostate exam might sound like a scary concept, but remember, early detection is essential for treating cancer.
What is ‘Movember’? In the 80s, moustaches (for good or bad) were the fashion accessory for your face. Now, not so much. However, in the month of November, we travel back in time. Men across the world grow don impressive (in some cases) moustaches and for a great cause – Movember Movember has established itself as the leading charity when it comes to raising awareness of men’s health issues. It’s not just awareness that the charity raises; they also raise vital funds through annual events. Started in 2003 by two friends in Australia, Movember was born. The pair managed to get 30 people involved, and since then, it has become a global movement. Today, more than 6 million people get involved, and the charity are raising million and million dollars for men’s health. Some of the men’s health issues that Movember focuses on include prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health/suicide prevention.

Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends face a health crisis that isn’t being talked about. Men are dying too young. We can’t afford to stay silent.
MAURICE GUERIN Having those conversations is the first step to bettering your mental health. If you know someone who may be struggling and you’re Men have a harder time talking about their issues, often keeping things bottled up. For this reason, Movember’s focus when it comes to mental health is to get more men talking. Not only did being in lockdown put a severe strain on our mental health, but it also made it more challenging to get the expert help needed. Many people are on the waiting list for mental health support or treatment. Sadly, the suicide rate in men is significantly and consistently higher than their female counterparts across the world. Data from Statista shows that in 2020, the rate of suicides per 100,000 was 15.4% among males, compared to 4.9% among females. Separate data from the Office for National Statistics revealed that males aged 45-49 have the highest suicide rate. Testicular cancer Worldwide, around 70,000 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer each year. Thankfully, the survival rate for men with testicular cancer is very high – 95%. As we mentioned above, early detection is vital, so it’s essential to regularly check for anything that doesn’t feel right. The Macmillan website has a dedicated page, showing you the proper way to check for lumps. If something doesn’t seem right, make sure you visit your GP. Although survival rates are high, long-term side effects from treatment can take their toll. Movember focuses on helping men get back to living life to the full and supporting them going forward. Mental health Mental health has become even more of a topic for discussion following the lockdowns.
How to ‘save a bro’ Make sure you keep an eye on your local activities for Movember to find out more. If you want to do your bit and raise some money for fantastic causes, here is how you can get involved. The first is simple; just don’t shave this November – your top lip, that is. Simply sign up, grow a moustache and raise vital funds while raising awareness of men’s health issues. For those looking to get active, there is Move for Movember. The challenge is to run or walk 60km across the month of November – that’s 1km for each of the 60 men lost to suicide across the world each hour. Of course, you can also get creative. Whether it’s hosting an event or completing a challenge, your support makes a difference. If you want to find out how the money you raise is being used, check out the Movember financial page for a breakdown. Movember is transforming the way research into men’s health happens, and the way health services help men. We are changing the face of men’s health, and saving men’s lives. And we’re not going to stop until we’ve fixed the crisis in men’s health.
