From the President’s Desk
ALOHA! I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits as you enjoy the festive month of July. In celebration of Independence Day, I want to take a moment to share with you the rich history and significance of the Walter J. Macfarlane Memorial Canoe Regatta, an event deeply rooted in our Club’s heritage.
teams from various clubs and organizations come together to test their mettle on the pristine waters of Waikīkī, vying for victory in this prestigious race. As we gather to celebrate this year’s festivities, let us reflect on the significance of the Macfarlane Canoe Race and of OCC’s rich history in general. Our historical roots are what ground us and it’s important to remember the unwavering dedication of those who came before us. This specific race is an opportunity for us to honor the shared heritage we hold dear and to express our gratitude for the beauty of our Hawai‘i home. Cheering on the paddlers, witnessing the power of unity in motion, and reveling in the joyous atmosphere that envelops our Club during this remarkable event brings us together as a Club, a community, and a family. I look forward to seeing you all at the Club on July 4th and beyond. And I encourage everyone to continue the proud tradition of the Macfarlane Regatta and create new memories by participating in other beloved OCC traditions.
The Macfarlane Regatta, held annually on July 4, serves as a reminder of our Club’s commitment to the ancient Polynesian sport of outrigger canoe paddling. This race commemorates the legacy of Alexander Hume Ford and Walter J. Macfarlane, two pioneering figures who played a pivotal role in establishing the Outrigger Canoe Club as we know it today.
Alexander Hume Ford, a visionary and advocate for Hawaiian culture, was instrumental in founding the Club in 1908. His passion for preserving traditional Hawaiian water sports, including canoe paddling, inspired the formation of the OCC that we know today. Ford firmly believed that embracing these cultural practices would foster a sense of community and connection with the ocean, a sentiment that continues to resonate within our Club. Walter J. Macfarlane, a prominent member of the Outrigger Canoe Club, furthered Ford’s vision by actively participating in and promoting outrigger canoe racing. He was a remarkable athlete who displayed exceptional skill and dedication to the sport. In 1943, the Macfarlane Canoe Race was established to honor his contributions and to showcase the artistry and athleticism of outrigger canoe paddling. Since its inception, the Macfarlane Regatta has become a cherished tradition within our Club and the wider community. This commitment to perpetuating the spirit of aloha and embracing the oceanic heritage is what defines us. Year after year,
Aloha,
Curt DeWeese, President

ALOHA OCC ‘OHANA! There truly is no comparison to our summer days at the Club! Whether you're out making waves on the water or comfortably nestled under an umbrella with a good book, OCC offers the perfect summer retreat.
Beyond these, the website offers countless other gems—every issue of the Club’s magazines, from the Forecast to the Outrigger to Ama —the history of the Outrigger logo, and a collection of over 33,000 images of our friends and family over the years. With an incredible number of monthly views, the website serves as a reminder of our Club’s past and helps highlight the present. You could spend hours or even days engrossed in the content of this site and still find more to explore. OCC’s sports website constantly reminds us of our Club’s rich history, and we are fortunate to have such a comprehensive and well-maintained resource. Please join me in sharing our heartfelt gratitude to Marilyn Kali and the entire Historical Committee for their dedication and hard work in preserving our legacy. This site is really one of a kind, and I would strongly recommend that you spend some time visiting it!
I would suggest that the next time you’re reading under an umbrella or scrolling on your phone, you take some time and look up the outriggercanoeclubsports.com website. Impressive doesn’t even begin to describe this website! Curated by one of our esteemed Life Members, Marilyn Kali, this website offers a comprehensive view into every aspect of our
Club’s history, including; its Olympians, the Winged “O”, ODKF, canoe racing, various sports both on land and sea, archives, photos, and so much more. Fun fact from the website: Our Outrigger members have brought home a total of 37 Olympic medals (18 gold, 13 silver, and 6 bronze)? This incredible accomplishment exceeds that of many countries! It’s a testimony to the sheer talent, commitment, and relentless drive of these athletes, and the dedicated coaches who guided and believed in them. Many of these acclaimed athletes continue to call the Outrigger Canoe Club their home. Through more than 140 oral history interviews available on the site, you can hear first-hand accounts from members like John Cline Mann, Fred Hemmings, Elizabeth “Liz” Perry, and Tri Bourne, to name just a few. Our koa canoes—the Kakina, the Leilani, the Kaoloa, the Ka Mo‘i, and the Stephanie—carry not only us but also the heritage of our Club. The website features articles about their history, the evolution of fiberglass canoes, and the meaningful process of naming each canoe, all eloquently explained by our Life Member and Winged “O” Kawika Grant.

Ready to Race The 2023 blessing of the canoes was held just in time for the first race of the regatta season. ➳ Last month, the Club continued its beloved tradition of blessing the wa‘a. The Friday night sunset celebration was one to remember. Coaches, paddlers and their families gathered as Kahu Kordell Kekoa blessed the Club, its members and the fleet. After the moving ceremony, eager paddlers picked up their jerseys and joined teammates and other members to enjoy a screening of the documentary “Waterman” on the volleyball courts. The koa canoes—Kakina, Kaoloa and Leilani—continue to write OCC history and simultaneously connect us to our past and present. We look forward to watching as ‘Iwalani and Manu o Kū—the newest additions to our racing fleet—make their mark.

Reading ’Riggers
Reading ‘Riggers’ enjoys a mix of history, fiction, mystery, poetry, and in one case, spirituality, all in the name of Hawaiiana. Past, Present and Future
By Gerry DeBenedetti
➳ PAST This year began with the second volume of Jane Good- sill’s “Voices of Hawai‘i —Vol. 2: Preserving Island Culture One Story at a Time.” Lots of OCC members have been interviewed in both volumes, and Jane is currently working on Vol III. Then in February, we celebrated a late OCC member, Marjorie Jane Putnam Sinclair, rumored to have written some of her material in the OCC bar. Two bagpipers from the Caledonian Society of Hawai‘i came dressed in full regalia in March to help us present “The Story of Scots in Hawai‘i” by late OCC member Rhoda Hackler. And in April, former State Attorney General David Louie shared both his political remembrances and his unknown (to us) woodworking and restoration talents with “From The Desk of the Attorney General: A Memoir.” In May, we read the spiritual title, “Change We Must” by Nana Veary. Joan Rodby and friends reminisced about the author and we ended up with a “wow” presentation. Then, we read “Seeking the Sacred Raven: Politics and Extinction on a Hawaiian Island” by Mark Jerome Walters and got to speak with resource presenter Megan Laut from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. PRESENT A brand new book by local author and surfing news reporter Mindy Pennybacker is our title: “Surfing Sisterhood Hawai’i: Wahine Reclaiming the Waves.” OCC members Kai‘ulu Downing and Evie Black, both featured in the book, join Mindy for a presentation on
women surfing. It’s a very timely title considering the summer swells! FUTURE Another stretch for Reading ‘Riggers is coming in August with “Great Circle” by Maggie Shipstead. Our resource presenter will be OCC member and pilot Don Machado because he flies airplanes, as does the subject of this book. According to Time magazine we can expect “two plane crashes, a sunken ship and several people dead.” Plus, there’s a chapter set in Hawai‘i. In September, we’re reading Richard White’s “Who Killed Jane Stanford: A Gilded Age Tale.” It’s about a murder that occurred in the Moana Hotel and is the story of Stanford University’s co-founder who died under mysterious circumstances. Non-resident OCC member Sandy Miller, who is a Board member of the Cantor Museum at Stanford, will be our resource presenter. We’re still figuring out October, so watch this space! For November, author Chip Hughes will be present to talk about his series on fictional surfing detective Kai Cooke. This Reading ‘Riggers will have six easy reading titles, “Murder on Moloka‘i,” “Wipeout!,” “Kula,” “Murder at Volcano House,” “Hanging Ten in Paris Trilogy,” and “Barking Sands.” In December, we’ll read “Lei Aloha: Celebrating the Vibrant Flowers and Lei of Hawai‘i” by OCC members Meleana Estes and Jennifer Fiedler, both will be present. It’s a perfect book for gifting!

“It’s always been a goal of mine to seek out new ways in which technology can open new avenues for exploration in the ocean. Foiling, kiteboarding, windsurfing: They all serve that same purpose for me.” –Kai Lenny
The Kai Life OCC member Kai Lenny continues to redefine what’s possible. ➳ If you haven’t seen the first season of the Red Bull Media House’s “Life of Kai,” you’re going to want to catch up. Now in its third season, new episodes of the docuseries started releasing in late February, showcasing the extraordinary life of one of the Club’s—and the world’s— most progressive waterman.
This season of “Life of Kai” gives more unique access to Kai’s inner workings, daily routines and to his support team. “Expect this season to have a different perspective and approach compared to previous episodes. It will all be fresh and in the moment. That’s what I’m really excited for you all to see!” says Kai. Follow his latest adventures via the docuseries, and perhaps you’ll run into him over at the Snack Shop waiting for his chicken quesadilla or chocolate milkshake after a casual inter island trip from Maui to O‘ahu on his foil board.
and support the next generation to pursue their passions and ambitions in life, through positive experiences and lessons in the ocean, in the community and throughout the world. You may remember Ama interviewed Kai for the September/ October 2021 issue. Since then, he’s continued to chase his aquatic dreams, and also became an author (his hardcover book, “Big Wave Surfer: The Greatest Rides of our Lives” was published by prestigious New York publishing house Rizzoli shortly after that interview), got married, and became a dad to twin girls.
As the mission of this Club is to perpetuate the sports of old Hawai‘i, Kai is undoubtedly one of the most prolific members doing just that. He kiteboards, windsurfs, stand- up paddleboards, foils and surfs some of the biggest waves in the world. “It’s always been a goal of mine to seek out new ways in which technology can open new avenues for exploration in the ocean. Foiling, kiteboarding, windsurfing: They all serve that same purpose for me,” said Kai, the youngest inductee to Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation’s Hawai‘i Waterman Hall of Fame. THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PADDLE
Distance can seem gapingly vast
“ I now have so many friendships that span across various age ranges, backgrounds, and things in common,“ — Taylor Doherty
when you’re not at the place your heart feels most at home—even if home is just an island hop away, as it is for 22-year-old Taylor Doherty. The Hawai‘i Island native left the comfort of home and an expansive group of family and friends to move to O‘ahu in pursuit of a graduate degree at Chaminade University. Nevertheless, the local girl took another leap of faith, seizing the opportunity to join the Outrigger Canoe Club’s paddling program. The decision has proven to be worthwhile: “I
waters. Paddling with Outrigger has allowed me to explore the ins and outs of O‘ahu’s ocean, particularly the South Shore.” With life beyond the Club currently saturated in academic rigor and intellectual demand, Taylor appreciates the challenges put forth by training with the novice crews. “I really appreciate the coaches presenting us with difficult situations, conditions, workouts and races that we can rise up to accomplish together as a team. When they push me as a paddler outside of my comfort zone, but still offer enough guidance to do so safely, I feel like that is where I grow the most.” The people that make up the Novice crews—those who’ve only been paddling for three years or less—include local and international faces, parents, divorcees and long-time couples, football players, military members, vegans, a welder, a cancer survivor, lawyers; a roster of individuality. Leaving behind their ‘real world selves,’ the dedicated hui have already grown exponentially in their paddling abilities, and in so many other ways, too.
now have so many friendships that span across various age ranges, backgrounds, and things in common,” notes Doherty of her time with the crew. “I’ve enjoyed having quality conversations with my teammates—throughout practices, get-togethers, and at races—that I normally wouldn’t have outside of paddling.” Discovering a natural inclination towards navigation, Taylor’s time as steerswoman has allowed her to get to know another aspect of paddling: the aquatic landscape of the Island. “Paddling has helped my knowledge of O‘ahu’s oceans grow tremendously. Being raised on the Big Island, I was used to knowing every reef, shoreline, current and more. Even after living on O‘ahu for a few years, I was having a hard time learning the intricacies of this Island and its

Together, these crews have endured gym workouts, swim tests, OC-1 practice to Black Point, OC-1 races in Waimanālo and Lanikai, as well as OC-6 practices in the ocean off Diamond Head and Waikīkī, and regularly in the Ala Wai. Though last year’s Novice teams faced fierce competition and adversity early in the 2022 regatta season at Kailua and Nanakuli, the dedicated crews saw burgeoning success as the season went on. In fact, both the Novice A Men and Women won States. This year, the Women’s Novice A team— which includes Doherty, Carly Bargiel, Rachel Geicke, Lindsey Lowe, Becky Needham and Sandra Walter—have started the season off strong, coming in first place at the first two races of the season, the Clement D. Pai‘aina Regatta and the King Kamehameha Day Regatta.
Paddlers are all smiles as they get OCC’s Leilani into the water for the King Kamehameha Day Regatta. The storied canoe’s first race was in 1936. Bottom: Other paddlers and members alike show their support by cheering and welcoming racers out of the water.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PADDLE
“The ocean can be a very fickle place. If you fight it, you go nowhere fast, but if you are able to feel it, and go with the flow, it’s fast and fun. So being a steerswoman, Taylor is the one who chooses the direction the crew paddles in, the one that will get them to the desired location fastest—even if that means it’s not the straight line and includes twists and turns. That’s kind of how life works, too,” says Novice coach Harry Newhart. Taylor is one of the many who not only brings talent, but her lighthearted attitude to the Club’s Novice program, which is rich with enthusiastic newcomers hailing from diverse backgrounds. The eclectic bunch of newbies were drawn to the sport for reasons as unique as every one of them. For instance, Becky Needham signed herself up for paddling in the wake of COVID lockdowns. Having made a bunch of new friends, she encouraged her husband to get involved and he soon followed. Together, the Needham’s utilized the lessons from the crew and began paddling together from the Club to Black Point, getting exercise and building a newfound love of paddling together. Former Notre Dame linebacker Carlo Calabrese recently moved to the Aloha State. Longing for the competition and camaraderie that comes with team sports, Calabrese discovered paddling and the New Jersey native now finds himself just as at home on the Pacific as he is on the football field. Then there’s Jonathan Kam, who grew up in the Bay Area of California, who followed his heart to the Islands. The University
Novice B paddlers Chandler Grant and Trevor Smith share a moment of instruction before their race.

Eileen imagined. Through OCC’s paddling program, she says she’s become friendly with, and closer to, people of all ages. “I’ve known Liz [Perry] since hanabata days, but it’s been great to get to know her as Coach Liz,” she notes. “Oh, and my core is definitely stronger!” From that very first stroke of the paddle in the Pacific, these members discovered the passion, the challenge, the fortitude, and the ‘ohana that unifies every paddler. Their different backgrounds, experiences, and life dynamics have successfully fused with that of each of their Novice crew teammates. Doherty was quick to note, “Nothing beats a Saturday morning practice! A challenging workout on the ocean in the morning sun and maybe some dolphins if we’re lucky—it’s the best way to start the weekend!” Then added, “Although I usually need a nap right after.” Whether the members sought to accomplish a fitness goal, were looking for a new hobby or wanted to better understand the Club’s history (just some of the benefits of joining OCC’s paddling program), the colorful group that make up the Novice crews prove there’s no one-size-fits-all to paddling—in terms of people and motivation. The common thread, and perhaps the most rewarding aspect, is undoubtedly the comradery and community that’s gained by taking the leap and hopping into the canoe.
of Oregon grad was looking for exciting ways to get into shape, so he hesitantly tried paddling. Turns out he found a new addition to his healthy lifestyle, and a way to celebrate his alma mater (his canoe is painted U of O Duck colors, yellow and green). First year Novice B paddler, Chandler Grant was encouraged to join by his neighbor-turned-friend, who just happens to be longtime Coach Liz Perry. It took little to convince his partner Trevor Smith to hop in the canoe too. “I started paddling to make a deeper connection with the Club and its members. I wanted to apply the weight training I’ve been doing in the gym over the last 10 years to a sport where I could gain more functional fitness,” Chandler says. Thus far, after only a few regatta races in, he’s unlocked his membership. “I’ve gained many new friends, felt the competitive spirit and passion, and definitely improved my functional fitness and coordination.” Eileen Perry, a 70-year-old first year paddler, admits she doesn’t have much competitiveness in her—she’s always been into solo athletics like walking and golf—but she shows up to every practice, supports her teammates and spreads positivity. The social aspect has been more than "I’ve gained many new friends, felt the competitive spirit and passion, and definitely improved my functional fitness and coordination. ” — Chandler Grant

Surf Jam 2023 With a healthy turnout and the largest swell in a month, the ocean provided a memorable action-packed day. By Tai Sunnland ➳ The annual Outrigger Canoe Club Surf Jam was blessed with a fresh 3-to 4-foot swell and breezy trade winds on the last Saturday of June. Notable standouts were Toa Pere and Jackson Bunch. Both surfers entered the Under-14, Boys 15-18, and Open Men's division. Toa took first place in both youth divisions and finished second in the Open Men's. Jackson finished second and third in the youth divisions. This year we also held the first Beach Services heat, and the beloved Sam Clemens took first place. The Canoe Surfers didn’t fail to entertain the beach spectators. The crews were sending it on the biggest sets of the contest. Jimmy Austin and his crew of two placed first, even after taking the biggest wipeout of the day. The beautiful wooden trophies were handcrafted by Peter Balding, Jr. and the shirts were designed by Clemens. Congratulations to all competitors. A big mahalo to the OCC Athletics, Beach Services, Food & Beverage, and Maintenance teams; member volunteers; water photographer Tommy Pierucki; and Pacific Ocean Patrol without whom this would not have been possible. ■

➳ As a crew and a group of friends, I, along with two other experienced watermen, embarked on a journey to French Polynesia to race in the 2023 Tahiti Pearl Regatta. We entered the Holopuni division, thanks to the help of Polynesian Voyager and Holopuni World Champion Teiva Véronique-Gatata with his Holopuni sailing school. We met with the other crews in Huahine where we got our hands on Matari‘i, our canoe for the race. On our first day sailing we left the south of Huahine, and headed to Raiatea to the marae of Taputapuātea, where we were hosted by Tahitian priests and cultural practitioners for a welcome ceremony. The 36-mile crossing took us 6 hours in very light wind conditions. We ended the day sailing all the way to the other side of Raiatea, to top off the mileage at 47 miles. After a well-deserved day off—spent discovering the island, the local food and spending time with our local family—the first day of the race was upon us. It was a 31-mile sailing battle between the islands of Taha‘a and Raiatea. Unfortunately, we took the last place after some issues with our Holopuni and a total lack of knowledge of the local waters and race course. On day two, the winds died, and the 30- mile course was shortened by half. What was supposed to be a sailing race became a real paddling battle. We ended the day ranking in second place, just a minute behind Véronique-Gatata. At that point, we realized that our chance to finish second in the event was going to rely on our paddling advantage.
Three experienced watermen embarked on a journey to French Polynesia for the 2023 Tahiti Pearl Regatta.
Since day three was a total doldrum, the original course was modified from a loop around the island of Taha‘a to a 15-mile race up and down on the east side of the island. However, after 45 minutes into the race the commissioners informed all the sailing canoes that the race would stop after a short 5-mile battle due to the total absence of wind. We placed second, just a couple minutes behind Véronique-Gatata and his experienced crew, which secured us an overall second place win. This trip was definitely an experience of a lifetime for us. We covered more than 120 miles in five days, met amazing people who became friends, reconnected with family, were immersed in a new culture, and set a foot down in French Polynesia for future Holopuni races. At that point, we realized that our chance to finish second in the event was going to rely on our paddling advantage.

A Splendid Season Nā Kama O Kapua (NKOK) finished strong at the Moloka‘i Channel Relay.
Three OCC relay crews and their coaches camped at Hale O Lono beach on the south shore of Moloka‘i and paddled back to O‘ahu. They took home first, second and third place wins in the Junior Girls Division. In addition, partners Sabrina Graves and Eva Sandvold won first place in the overall Women’s Relay Division. Congratulations to all the girls for a great 2023 solo craft season!
Tri Bourne won gold at the 2023 AVP New Orleans beach volleyball tournament back in April—with new partner Chaim Schalk— and his sister Britta Lau was right there with him to celebrate. “It’s so cool to see things come full circle. My sister was around for so much of my early years of volleyball at Outrigger, so it was pretty special to get the win at the first event she’s seen me play at, outside of Hawai‘i,“ said Bourne.
