100 – not out! PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE IS CELEBRATING ITS 100TH ISSUE…

W hen we launched our magazine back in 2001, little did we know that we would hit our 100th issue milestone during such an extraordinary year. A global pandemic, lockdowns, zoom calls and remote working - just like the rest of the plumbing and heating industry, we had to pivot and adapt to continue to operate during these unprecedented times. But we’re used to change. We’ve come a long way since our first issue. Originally known as Plumbing & Heating in Northern Ireland, the magazine was aimed specifically at the trade in the province. We launched a sister publication in 2008 to cover the Republic of Ireland market before merging both titles into Plumbing & Heating Magazine. Since then, we have become the voice of the plumbing and heating industry across the whole of Ireland. But we are more than just a magazine. The added value of our annual trade show and also

our awards ceremony have helped to boost the local industry while our digital and social platforms spread the achievements of our readers and advertisers globally. Karen McAvoy, Managing Director of KMP Ltd, - publishers of Plumbing & Heating Magazine - said, “We continue to listen to what the industry wants – that’s the secret to our success. This is a time of massive flux in the industry brought on by issues like new climate change regulations, Brexit and Covid-19 restrictions. We look forward to hearing the views of our readers and advertisers on how we can continue to evolve to reflect these changes. “If you feel we need to be covering a specific issue, please let us know. This is your magazine.” Jacqui Fairley, Publication Manager added, “These are unprecedented times, but we will continue to provide the perfect platforms for the industry to grow and focus on the many positives that exist right across the plumbing and heating sector.”

g The future potential for renewable gas is the subject of a new research project, which is being funded by The Centre for Advanced Sustainable Energy (CASE) with support from Phoenix Natural Gas and industry partners Agri Ad and EnerChem Solutions. Hosted by Queen’s University, CASE funds collaborative, industry-led research also at Ulster University and government-backed research body, the Agri- Food and Biosciences Institute (ABFI). The new partnership will seek to quantify the opportunity available to harness biomethane from agricultural waste across Northern Ireland for injection into the natural gas grid locally, creating a renewable gas home-heating solution. Biomethane injection into the natural gas network has been proven in countries right across Europe, demonstrating the ability of the natural gas infrastructure to transport and deliver a blended form of home-heating fuel. CASE is funded by Invest NI, and has recently launched a call for new project applications. Switching users from kerosene to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) can result in an immediate reduction of 88% in carbon emissions.

The future for biofuels is real and gatheringpace

THE INCLUSION OF BIOFUELS IN NI’S NEW ENERGY POLICY COULD BE THE SOLUTION TO EXPENSIVE RETROFITTING MEASURES, WRITES OFTEC IRELAND MANAGER, DAVID BLEVINGS...

W ho would want to be making energy policy decisions in Northern Ireland currently? After the RHI debacle, politicians will be ultra-cautious of any proposal that is presented for their approval. But the reality is with energy being a devolved matter, our local politicians will have to step up to the mark and make some decisions on future energy policy later this year. The Climate Change Act 2008 Order 2019 has a target for a 100% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions for the UK, but it does not apply to individual nations. Northern Ireland has a target of 80% reduction by 2050, with an interim target of 35% by 2025,

but this is not set in legislation. However, DAERA recently held a consultation on a potential climate change bill, so watch this space. Climate change is a highly emotive issue with people on both sides of the argument; climate change deniers and ‘climate activists’ are poles apart, with many in between. But most people are now aware of climate change. Many would cite it as a major concern and would like to do something about it. But how far does that concern go? It is one thing to say you are concerned and want to change the way you do things but another to take the step and transform your lifestyle to reduce your carbon footprint. To put it in perspective, we are highly dependent on fossil fuels

“For most off-grid homes with a low

So, is there an alternative? OFTEC believes so. We have proposed that a technology neutral approach is the correct one; some houses will be perfectly suited to a heat pump, or easily upgraded to take a heat pump, and that is correct for them. But for most off-grid homes with a low thermal efficiency, it is cheaper and easier to move the user from burning kerosene to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) with an immediate reduction of 88% in carbon emissions. Biofuels can be a near drop-in replacement for kerosene, and existing equipment can be retained with only a few cost-effective adaptions being made to burn the new fuel. We are pushing hard to have biofuels included in the new energy policy as consumers can reduce their carbon footprint significantly with no capital cost compared to the large sums of money required to retrofit a house to make it suitable for an alternative heating source. The future for biofuels as a viable and realistic option for decarbonising the liquid fuel sector is real and gathering pace. For more details, watch the video at https://www.oftec.org/future-heating/ making-the-switch-to-hvo-in-northern- ireland. thermal efficiency, it is cheaper and easier to move the user from burning kerosene to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) with an immediate reduction of 88% in carbon emissions.”

in Northern Ireland with over 65% of homes heated by oil and approximately 25% of homes heated by natural gas. Carbon emissions from home heat account for around 14% of total CO2 emissions and government would like to see this quickly reduced. It is a tough challenge as a recent report by ARUP (an independent firm of consultants) indicated that of the circa 800,000 domestic properties in Northern Ireland, over 50% of dwellings have some cavity wall and loft insulation and over 85% have double glazing but less than 50% of houses have an Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) Band C or above. That is not good news if you are pushing electrification and heat pumps as the sole solution for carbon reduction as they are unlikely to meet the required comfort levels in these homes without substantial retrofit works. ARUP’s modelling suggests that we need to ‘up’ the number of retrofit measures from the current 16,500 per year to 30,000 buildings annually if Northern Ireland is to align with the UK’s 2030 energy efficiency target. It goes further and suggests we need an annual retrofit programme of over 50,000 buildings in the next decade if

we are to meet the 2050 target. So, what are these retrofit costs?

According to BEIS, the average cost to bring an EPC Band E oil-heated home up to an acceptable Band C is reported as £12,300, and from Bands F and G to C, £18,900. If that is achieved, then they could be heated by an air source heat pump – average installation cost in 2020 was £10,918. Homeowners could be looking at a bill of between £20,000 and £30,000 - who is going to pay for these retrofit measures? Government or the homeowner? We have seen a reluctance from consumers to take on ‘debt’ to retrofit homes, and grants have tended to be for those on lower incomes and/or means tested. There is talk of ‘Green Mortgages’ and ‘pay as you save’ products but unless grants are realistic and easily accessed by the ‘working population’ consumers are not going to rush to retrofit their home when they have a perfectly good heating system in place. OFTEC carried out a poll with consumers in the Republic and just over six in 10 (62%) adults claim they would be unwilling to pay any more to “decarbonise” home heating, with 30% claiming they would only be willing to pay less than €250 per year.

HEATING SYSTEMS

“Grant’s heat emitter range has been developed to suit all types of modern or traditional builds.”

Grant’s Afinia range offers easy installation and adaptability.

RENOWNED FOR ITS FORWARD-THINKING APPROACH TOWARDS THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE HEATING TECHNOLOGIES, GRANT CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WAY WITH ITS HIGHLY EFFICIENT HEAT EMITTER RANGE... Grant’s range of highly sustainable heat emitters can increase property efficiencies

S electing the correct heat emitters to best suit a property is an extremely important step when planning a heating system for a new build or upgrade project. It is essential that a heating system is selected to suit the individual requirements of the property and those who dwell within. Once the main heat source has been selected, specifying the most efficient heat emitters for each individual room is essential to evenly distribute heat effectively throughout the property. When working on a new build or retrofit project, careful consideration should be given to understanding the requirements of the property, in terms of the heat loss of each room and ensuring

the heat output of the radiators is at the correct ΔT (Delta T). GAS CHAT IRELAND

A Worcester boiler was kindly donated by Greenline Plumbing Supplies.

The annual Christmas raffle has raised over €27,000 for Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

GAS CHAT IRELAND’S, MARK RYAN, GIVES THANKS TO IRELAND’S GAS INDUSTRY AND PRAISES SUPPORT FOR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CHARITY RAFFLE... Latest update fromGas Chat Ireland

T his month, we thought we would acknowledge the support we received over the last few months for our annual Christmas raffle. It’s mind-blowing how it’s taken off and has become a fundraising behemoth, with many companies in the industry bending over backwards to support our cause without any canvassing on our part. The most recent raffle was the biggest yet, which was completely unexpected, with the pandemic surrounding us. It just goes to show the generosity and charitable nature of the guys and gals involved in our industry. Our chosen beneficiary, Crumlin Children’s Hospital, has this time around received €27,608. This year it will be split between St. John’s Ward and the Heart Centre. St John’s looks after children with cancer of all types and the Heart Centre deals with congenital heart defects. Both do amazing work, and a lot of us here in Gas Chat Ireland have experienced their care either directly or indirectly at one stage or another. Since the raffle’s inception in 2017, we have raised a massive €61,308 for Crumlin, all through raffle ticket sales. None of this would be possible of course without the prizes readily donated by

the very generous suppliers, merchants and manufacturers that are members of our Facebook group. We can’t thank you enough for both your support, and involvement with the group. Last year was tough on everyone, and many small businesses were at risk of doors closing, but still the prizes rolled in, and the tickets sold by the thousands. We’re very proud to share our platform with such generous people.

Pumps, Grant Engineering, AKA Diamond Tools, K&S Safety Superstore, Testo, Mascot Workwear, Gasequipment. ie, Shower Doctors, Accura Diamond Tools, and Carlito Sunglasses. We as an industry will continue to support your businesses throughout these challenging times and look forward to brighter days as the vaccine is rolled out across the country. For now, stay safe, support local, and look out for each other. If you are an RGI or work in the gas industry and would like to join our pressure-free forum, search for “Gas Chat Ireland” on Facebook for help, advice, member deals and a bit of craic. PROJECT

HINCHDISTILLERY, BALLYNAHINCH, CO. DOWN

McCORLEY MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL CRANK UP THEIR MAJOR M+E PROJECT DELIVERIES WITH A BESPOKE INSTALLATION FOR BRAND NEW HINCH DISTILLERY... McCORLEY FIRES UP HINCH DISTILLERY

M cCorley Mechanical and Electrical’s recent project at the £15m Hinch Distillery, Ballynahinch showcases the outstanding quality of M+E works carried out by the company. The 30,000 sq ft, two-storey building includes a large whiskey and gin distillery producing the Craft Hinch Irish Whiskey and Ninth Wave Gin brands. It also features an interactive visitor centre, coffee shop, retail area, outside courtyard space and multi-purpose events spaces. McCorley’s mechanical team was tasked with installing 3 x 20 tonne Calor BioLPG tanks and laying and connecting the mains pipe work to the building. Calor BioLPG was specified by the architect to reduce carbon emissions and increase the distillery and visitor centre’s environmental performance. The air conditioning and ventilation system

had to be fire-rated and ATEX compliant because of the highly flammable and potentially explosive environment within the still area. Working with Titan Air Conditioning, McCorley sourced the fire- resistant and explosive-proof equipment, including fire-rated fan motors. Further works included putting in the main water pipe and delivering a substantial fire ring to the building. Previously known for their mechanical works, McCorleys added an electrical division in 2016. Under the guidance of their new Electrical Contracts Manager, Stephen O’Loughlin, the division is growing in size and scope. From maintenance to full electrical installations, McCorleys is fully resourced to fulfill schemes large and small. The electrical works amounted to 75% of the Hinch Distillery scope carried out

by McCorleys. Stephen said, “This was a highly bespoke job involving specialist process control, ATEX and LEL compliant equipment along with bespoke architectural lighting. The project required the full domestic installation of general power and lighting, low voltage switchgear, fire alarms, intruder alarms, CCTV, door access controls and so on. “The biggest challenge was in the ATEX area that houses the stills. This was obviously a potentially explosive environment so precautions needed to be taken. Suitably rated and protected electrical equipment was used throughout to prevent the possibility of ignition from a spark, or other source of heat. “Also, the installation of internal lightning protection in addition to external protection was required to safeguard against potential explosive reactions.”

PROJECTTEAM... Client: Hinch Distillery Ltd Main Contractor: Corramore Construction Mechanical Contract Manager: John McCorley (McCorley Mechanical and Electrical)

produce and bottle their own gins. Commenting on the successful job, John McCorley, Director said, “It was a complicated project but well designed and thought-out by Semple McKillop pre-construction, which simplified the installation. We are delighted to include this prestigious project into our portfolio. It illustrates how far the capability of our relatively young electrical division has developed. From small to large M+E schemes, we now have the resources to scale up or down to deliver world-class installations – both mechanical and electrical.”

A sophisticated process control system added to the complexities of the project, as did the building’s architecture. “There were a lot of architectural features that didn’t lend themselves to be serviceable, which meant on-site co-ordination was paramount,” said Stephen. “We met weekly and then fortnightly with the design team and closely collaborated with the main contractor, Corramore Construction, which helped build strong relationships between us. There was a lot of co-ordination and collaboration with Corramore who were great to work with. They implemented stringent Covid-19 measures and controls during the restrictions period, which ensured the site was a safe environment to work in, with limited downtime due to these measures.” This high-profile project is a serious feather in the cap for McCorley Mechanical and Electrical. It’s expected to become a major tourist attraction, able to accommodate more than 100,000 visitors a year. Trained guides will bring visitors on an interactive and informative journey that will include a history of Irish whiskey and its unique distilling process, tutored tasting sessions, a specific gin tour and the opportunity to
