attract the attention of patients and their families. “Of course, the tremors are the most easily recognizable symptoms,” added Trottier. “But not all patients will suffer. Besides, one of the first symptoms that occurs is the loss of the sense of smell.” Other symptoms include muscle tightness, slowness of movement, balance loss and muscle pain. Patients with Parkinson’s disease may also experience sleep disturbances, constipation and loss of memory. “It is important to specify that memory impairment experienced by patients with Parkinson disease are not the same as those with Alzheimer’s disease,” highlighted the coordinator. “This scares a lot of people, but in the case of Parkinson, memory usually comes back and there is no change in the individual’s personality.” It is important to know that all the symptoms will not apply to all patients, since Parkinson’s disease develops differently from one person to another. “This can be a challenge for medical teams to reveal the diagnosis of Parkinson patients,” said
Trottier. “It is not uncommon for patients to live with the disease for several years before we can truly identify it as such.” Although there exists no current treatment for Parkinson, experts continue to research the disease and are hoping to create some sort of treatment for patients. Moreover, for some patients in advanced stages of the disease, brain surgery is possible. “The operation has a success rate of 100 per cent since the selection criteria are very rigorous,” explained Trottier. “Patients that are in wheelchairs can drive their car again.” Advice for living with Parkinson daily Following the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, it can be difficult to know where to turn for help. According to Parkinson Canada, it is important to first learn about the disease from reliable sources and find a doctor you trust. Communication with family and relatives is therefore key. «It is important to maintain an active social life, to eat well and exercise regularly,” advised the coordinator. “Patients should also avoid stress as much as possible.”

The bottles of sauce were flying during the year’s Wing It for Kids Sake. The second annual event, organized by Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), pitted several different restaurants against each other, to see who exactly has the best chicken wing sauce. “In all, we have eight different restaurants participating,” said BBBS Executive Director Amanda Brisson. “We also have some Littles serving tonight. It’s going to be great!” Esca Pizza, Schnitzels, Boston Pizza, Deke and Squeaks, Shoeless Joes, Sheep’s Head Bistro, Scores and the Propeller restaurant were all participating in the event. Around 200 members of the community participated in the chicken wing event, making it as successful as last year. “All the funds we get from tonight go directly back into the seven programs we offer,” stressed Brisson. Paramedic Services Week
The City of Cornwall and Cornwall SDG Paramedic Services are celebrating Paramedic Services Week fromMay 22 to May 28. Paramedic Services Week is a special time set aside to honour and recognize the dedication of paramedics and staff in our community. Paramedics work diligently every day to save lives, promote recovery and treat injuries in an emergency. This week is recognized nationally and promotes paramedics and staff with the national theme, Enhancing Care, Changing Lives . In 2016, paramedics in Cornwall and SDG responded to over 14,000 calls. Ambulances are constantly moving throughout the city and counties day and night to ensure safe and rapid response to any call for service. In addition, paramedics are providing valuable in-home care through the Community Paramedic Program. “Each shift, paramedics go to work prepared to meet the unexpected. They equip themselves both mentally and physically to deal with the challenges they will face in serving the community and its citizens,” said Paramedic Services chief Myles Cassidy. — supplied photo
Des centaines de résidents ont entouré l’Académie de hockey le 26 mai dernier, afin d’observer les pompiers de la ville au travail. Ceux- ci tentaient d’éteindre les flammes qui assaillaient l’édifice. Selon le chef de pompier de Cornwall, Pierre Voisine, le feu aurait pris naissance vers 18 h dans l’une des chambres des élèves. Il n’a été maîtrisé que vers 21 h. Personne n’aurait été blessé. L’édifice, qui servait de dortoir pour plus de 80 élèves, serait une perte totale. Les élèves, qui proviennent de divers pays, ont été en mesure de terminer leurs cours au cours des jours qui ont suivis. Nous avons choisi le thème Français un jour, Français toujours pour la Semaine française 2016, car c’est le fondement même de notre réalité. » Le lendemain, soit le 29 mai, les petits tout comme les grands se sont sucré le bec lors d’un déjeuner de crêpes, qui avait également lieu au 510, chemin Second. « Ça fait plusieurs années que je
participe à la Semaine française, a expliqué René Chisamore, qui portait fièrement plusieurs macarons de l’événement. Il y a plusieurs années, ma femme et moi-même participions aux danses dans les rues. Mais maintenant que je suis un peu plus âgé, je préfère les petits concerts. » Sur ce, l’homme montre du doigt l’horaire qu’on lui a remis à l’entrée. « J’ai bien hâte de voir la tournée des scouts, a-t-il confié. J’étais moi-même scout lorsque j’étais plus jeune. » Le déjeuner a été suivi de deux spectacles, ceux d’Estelle Farfadelle- Mission Pyramide
et d’André Thériault. « Nos enfants apprennent le français à la maison et nous espérons qu’ils l’utiliseront toute leur vie, a dit Mme Hart. Mais, il est essentiel de les inspirer à être fiers d’être francophones. Les traditions, les arts et la culture nourrissent l’âme d’un francophone. » Les activités se poursuivent tout au long de la semaine. The Knights of Columbus organized a spaghetti lunch and supper to help a good cause, on May 27. The funds collected during the event will be donated to the Red Cross and will serve to help the victims of the Fort McMurray fire. Hundreds of residents of Cornwall came together at the Knights of Columbus Hall in order to have a great meal, while chatting away. It took the Knights several hours of hard work to ensure everything was ready for the hungry residents. “We’re hoping to get around 300 to 700 people here,” explained Columbus Club President André Barrette. “We do a spaghetti supper every last Friday of the month. But for this month we thought, why don’t we help Fort Mac?” The doors opened at 11 a.m. but the event took place on two different storeys. “We’re having the lunch in the basement and, later on, the supper on the third floor,” said Barrette. “We even have a live band performing. Tel un phénix, le Centre culturel de Cornwall renaît des flammes, et ce, encore plus grand. C’est le 27 mai dernier qu’a eu lieu une dégustation de vins et fromages pour souligner l’ouverture officielle des nouveaux locaux du Centre, maintenant situé au 510, chemin Second, à l’intérieur de l’ancien site de l’hôpital. « Les propriétaires du bâtiment voulaient un organisme communautaire, a souligné la présidente du Centre culturel, Lucie Hart. Nos locaux sont bien plus grands qu’avant. Nous allons donc avoir bien plus d’activités! » Parmi celles-ci, la Prison hantée, organisée chaque mois d’octobre, deviendra l’Hôpital hanté. « C’est l’une de nos activités les plus populaires », a fait remarquer Mme Hart. Une centaine de personnes ont exploré le nouveau Centre, un verre de vin à la main. Les grands locaux ont aussi permis de réintégrer le Corrid’Art au sein du Centre culturel. « C’est un endroit exceptionnel », a déclaré la peintre Carolyn Davis. Winners of science fair
Two projects from area high school students won bronze medals at the Canada-Wide Science Festival in Montreal, Quebec. Audrey Millette and Alexa Villeneuve won a bronze medal in the Junior division for their project « Santé »-vous bien quand vous dinez? Gabriel Valin won a bronze medal in the Intermediate division for his project Une alternative verte. Both projects are from l’École secondaire publique L’Héritage. As winners of a bronze medal, Valin, Millette and Villeneuve were also each awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Western University. Audrey, Alexa, and Gabriel were joined by Emytt Fetterly and Maclean Machan from Seaway District High School. The five students comprised the United Counties Science Fair Delegation when they were awarded the all-expenses paid, week-long trip to the Canada-Wide Science Festival at the United-Counties Science Fair, which took place in Cornwall in April.
