VISION IN ACTION Term 1 - Week 8

Here are some comments from our teaching team, when asked the question, ‘What makes a good

A word from the Principal

Learning Conversation?’: Primary School Teacher:

Learning Conversations – A key relationship opportunity We are coming up to

“Good Learning Conversations… being on time, willingness to listen, a couple of questions up your sleeve, remembering we’re on the same team and in partnership, seeing the big picture, valuing the whole child and all aspects of growth, remembering the context of the whole class – children are one of many, being willing to support and ask the question “what else can I/we do?” Middle School Teacher: “A good learning conversation does cover a student’s progress in particular learning areas, but as (or maybe even more) importantly it is a chance for families and teachers to connect, to celebrate success in the broadest sense of the word, to hear about hopes and interests in and beyond the classroom and to work together to overcome any challenges. I also like asking parents for tips about raising kids with my own growing family.” Senior School Teacher: “In the Senior School, Learning Conversations are a valuable avenue for students to share in a discussion about their learning with their parent and their teacher together. It’s a great forum for a three-way conversation about the student’s learning achievements, challenges and goals. Being together for this conversation continues to build the partnership that we have with families, it can bring other reporting formats like Canvas to life and address any concerns before the finality of semester reports.” Your child’s teachers will share affirmation and a pathway for growth that includes insight, feedback and feedforward regarding your child’s learning. We hope that after the Learning Conversations you’re thinking, ‘It’s been great to come along.I know how I can encourage my child to continue striving to do their best. I feel just a little bit more connected. This has been worth the effort.’

Learning Conversations. You will have received an email with some information

and a link to make bookings. To book a session , access Parent Lounge via the desktop and follow the process highlighted in this tutorial video. We encourage you to come along and use these rich opportunities to connect with your child’s teacher/s and to understand what is occurring in your child’s educational life. Whilst our Primary School parents and caregivers will meet with their child’s classroom teacher, our Secondary School Learning Conversations are designed as a three-way conversation between you, your child’s teachers and your child. We appreciate the commitment by parents and teachers to make Learning Conversations work well and I welcome your comments about this topic. Why and how has a Learning Conversation gone well? Can we improve the way in which we do this? You are welcome to email me. Please consider any questions you may have for the teachers in preparation for the interactive discussions. We also encourage you share a particular insight about your child that affects their approach to learning / schooling / life that could be helpful for your teacher to be aware of. It is a delight for teachers to gain insight from you as parents and ways in which we can work together to support your child in their learning.

We are doing a new thing … Mid-Year Reception Intake! In 2024, we will be offering a second transition point into school in a stand-alone class. This will provide two transition points into school as children turn five. We are committed to providing a holistic education that creates a safe environment and nurtures children as they learn through play, grow socially, and develop their love of learning. Our Mid-Year Reception intake program is no exception, with a focus on setting the foundations for your child to thrive in the first years of learning. This distinctive independent 6-month journey offers a comprehensive play-based program using the Australian Curriculum Framework and The Early Years Learning Framework to form the foundation for future learning. We develop a culture of active and engaged learning through providing the children with experiences in inquiry and play-based learning to investigate and explore the world around them, nurturing their ability to think creatively and flexibly, problem solve, build oral language skills and develop a positive attitude towards life-long learning. We invite families to join us on this exciting new journey, where your child can experience a warm and welcoming beginning at TVCS in Becoming Reception. Our Mid-Year Reception Program provides children who turn five between May 1 and Oct 31 the opportunity to begin school at the start of Term 3, 2024. If you are seeking a nurturing environment for your child’s educational journey you will find our program to be an excellent choice. As you consider this opportunity, we encourage you to reach out to your Kindergarten Director for information about your child’s kindy enrolment. Please contact our Director of Admissions, Julie Dow julie.dow@tvcs.sa.edu.au to enquire now. Exciting days ahead! Emily Brookes Principal

PRIMARY SCHOOL

It’s been another exciting few weeks in the

These skills are vital to managing our emotions and thriving at school so we are so glad the Year 6 buddies are there to help the little ones learn and grow (and of course they are growing in these important skills too). Our new building continues to progress. We can start to see the shape coming together now and can see the double storey aspect. We ask for your continued prayers for our Primary school and look forward to all God has in store for us. Caroline Duell Primary Deputy Principal

Primary School! Our Year 6 classes had a wonderful time on their camp to Wirraway, despite having to cut the

camp short a day due to extreme weather in the hills. Nevertheless, the camp personnel worked with us to ensure all

the children still got to ride a horse and experience as many different activities as possible. We were thrilled to hear them say how polite and respectful our children are and how much they love having Torrens Valley Christian School come to Wirraway each year. The Year 3s and 5s have completed all their NAPLAN tests. They all showed such resilience, confidence and helpfulness as we moved them across to the Village each day to complete the tests in a relatively quiet environment. Completing the tests on the laptops introduces a whole new level of complexity that we didn’t need to consider with the paper tests, but the Year 3s and 5s rose to the challenge! Well done children. Our Year 2 classes led us in our Worship Assembly last week. This was the first ‘normal’ worship assembly we have had in a long time. We had some beautiful singing, learnt how God has made each one of us in his image, and celebrated with those children who received Believe, Belong, Become Awards this fortnight. The Year 4 classes have been learning about how God designed plants and the different parts of a plant. They have been growing their own beans and looking at different fruits. Our Year 1s partnered with a Year 6 buddy to learn more about what it means to be a good friend, how to calm ourselves when we get upset and ways to solve a conflict.

PRIMARY SCHOOL

Year 6 Camp Year 6 students had a fantastic time up in the Adelaide Hills at Wirraway Homestead. Students enjoyed riding the beautiful horses, competing in a low ropes challenge, herding sheep, night hiking and getting to know the cheeky goat named Anchovy. One of the highlights was seeing the most amazing falling star as we viewed God’s amazing Milky Way Galaxy. It was a trip we’ll never forget! Special thank you to Mr De Kok, Mrs Voy, Mr Hore and Mrs Thorpe for being our Supervising Teachers.

Possum Magic Picnic The Year Two classes celebrated their study of Mem Fox books by having a Possum Magic Picnic on the oval! We enjoyed sitting in the sunshine together, eating vegemite sandwiches, Anzac biscuits, lamingtons and minties. Some of us even brought in a little furry friend to share this special event.

Year 1 and 2 Fruit Tasting This term in Indonesian lessons, the Year 1s and Year 2s have been learning about and taste-testing tropical fruit. They enjoyed a small taste-test of guava juice and pineapple juice as well as papaya, lady finger banana, mango, rambutan, custard apple, jack fruit, watermelon, fresh coconut and pineapple and wrote their verdict in Indonesian. Special thanks to Rick and Maria’s Fruit Shop for donating some delicious fruit. We look forward to seeing the children’s reactions when we try durian (“stinky fruit”) next week!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

What a fun few weeks we’ve had in Middle school. Year 8s had

their camp which was a blast. They enjoyed growing in community, God, and themselves as they completed team and personal

challenges. Some bodyboarded and kayaked for the first time and reported a great sense

of achievement. They worked together as groups to build shelters, solve puzzles and destroy each other’s towers with sling shots. What a great time they had. This week we had our first Middle School assembly for the year. M17 put on a really engaging assembly with the theme of Harmony Week. There was a wonderful devotion that reminded us that we are all part of the body of Christ, and I challenged our students to ‘stand up and stand out’ for Christ. We had a Care Group Vs Care Group Kahoot and basketball match as well. It was a fun time. The year 9 students had their first challenge walk last week at Morialta. The day was a great success with students engaged in reflection of where they have come from and where they are going in adult life. We encourage each one of them to maturity in Christ and to take ownership of their actions and thoughts as they grow in to young man and women. Looking ahead the year 7 students will be on camp in Belair next week. This will be a fun and exciting program for this group of students and staff to grow and learn more about their place in community and God’s world.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

• I learned I can do lots of things if my friends are there with me. • My second favourite activity was kayaking, working as a team with friends, doing games and just kayaking in general was really fun. • My favourite activity was raft building because I got to work together with people I didn’t know very well and try to use items to make a raft. Even if the raft didn’t work very well in the end, it was still fun to put it together and try to push it out into the water. Not only did our students have a blast, but they also learned valuable life skills. Way to go year 8s!

Year 8 Camp

On Wednesday the 8th of March, the Year 8s headed down to the Adare Campsite at Victor Harbour for three days of tenting and outdoor activities. First stop was the Murray Mouth Inlet to sketch the Coorong landscape and then on to Victor. After setting up the tents it was time for the first round of team challenges. The camp was a time for students to focus on our thread of ‘being humble’ Philippians 2:1-5, part our Servant Leadership theme this term. The outdoor activities, tenting and mealtimes were great opportunities for students to work together, love others and show humility. What did the Year 8’s think? • Bodyboarding was my favourite activity because it was fun riding the waves and getting destroyed by them. • I am thankful for spending time with my tribe. • I am thankful for Mr David’s devotion because it really helped me think about my relationship with God and helped me connect with Him. • I got to know my friends even more when around the table sharing about our days and laughing and making jokes. • My favourite activity was Kayaking because I love going out on the water and just having fun. • Bodyboarding was so much fun and that feeling of catching a wave that took you all the way to the shore was just amazing and I didn’t want it to end. • Raft building was challenging because it was hard to stay on top of the raft when the waves came along. • Sleeping in a tent exceeded my expectations in a good way.

SENIOR SCHOOL

We have been having many conversations with Senior School students recently about celebrating

Work Experience Needed! Do you work in an organisation or run a business that would like to support this valuable learning opportunity for students? At TVCS, our Career Development Strategy recognises that our students benefit from a planned program of career development activities to: • Expand their understanding of a Biblical view of vocation; • Maximise opportunities to learn about the world of work; and • Build their personal capabilities to succeed in managing life, work and learning. This year we are reinstating our Year 10 Work Experience program after a 3 year Covid induced hiatus. Therefore in Week 9 of Term 2 , (Monday June 26th to Friday June 30th) our Year 10 students are engaging in a week of work experience. The program is intended to run for all 5 days, however a minimum of 3 days is also acceptable. The paperwork trail has been simplified from previous years offering organisations a greater ease to implement a placement. If you are in a position to offer support this important step in the learning journey of our Year 10 students, please make contact with Simon Golley (SACE, Career Pathways) on simon.golley@tvcs. sa.edu.au. This is a very valuable week in the life of our secondary students, giving them an opportunity to experience work at a business or organisation and gain skills in learning on the job in a variety of industries. Thank you for considering this and for your support of our Work Experience program.

community and the many ways we can connect with each

other. This week is Harmony Week which is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration

of migrants into our community. It is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. Individual classes have been participating in a variety of activities during the week and on Friday, students were allowed to wear their PE uniforms and an orange shirt or other orange additions as recognition of the day. Recently, all Year 10 students participated in “Courage to Lead”, a program which is built on the Bridge Builders concepts used in the Primary school at TVCS. It was as a strong Christian focus and covers topics such as Respecting Yourself, Facing your Fears, Connecting and Problem Solving. Following the workshop, we asked for volunteers to be involved in a mentoring program with the Year 7 students and we had 15 volunteers. Those students were involved in a mentoring session on Tuesday and will now mentor Year 7 students during lunch. We are so blessed to be in a Christian school that puts Jesus Christ at the centre of everything we do and to be able to spend significant times together in worship. This week, all Senior School students attended the second Revampt assembly for the term at Hope Valley Church. Thanks to the Revampt Band and the whole Revampt team, led by Mrs Garland, we are able to hear to God’s word, listen to important messages and worship in song together. SENIOR SCHOOL

Wheelchair Basketball Fun! In weeks 2-5 of term 1, the Year 11 Physical education class have participated in a wheelchair basketball unit. Led by the amazing Michael Neroni from Disability Sports SA, who not only has spina bifida but also plays in a league, the students got firsthand experience of the challenges and joys of wheelchair sports. As they learned the ropes of the game, the students also got a taste of what it’s like to navigate life in a wheelchair. Michael shared his personal experiences and daily struggles, inspiring the class to be more grateful for the little things in life. But the highlight of the unit? A school-wide tour in wheelchairs! With Michael leading the way, the Year 11s rolled through the yard, gaining a newfound respect for the incredible strength and resilience of those who rely on wheelchairs every day.. The year 11s were extremely respectful, thoughtful and quite talented.

Year 12 Kayaking The year 12 PE class had a splashing good time during weeks 6 and 7, as they hit the waters of West Lakes for a 2-day kayaking extravaganza. Not only did they earn their Basic Skills Certificates, but they also got a head start on their first assignment of the year, analysing the biomechanics of a paddling stroke. And who better to guide them than TVCS Old Scholar, Jack Tingey (‘19). He led them through forwards and backwards paddling, sweep strokes, and even deep water rescues. But the real test of their skills? Standing up in their kayaks away from the shore to show off their balance. The group also took on a one-hour continuous paddle around one of the islands in West Lakes, showing off their kayaking (and endurance) skills. Needless to say, Jack was blown away by their talent and how they handled themselves during the unit.

ACTIVITIES & ACHIEVEMENTS Ready, steady, run! What a spectacular day was shared by all at the Primary Athletics Day on Thursday 9th March. Thank you to the community for coming and supporting the children. The friendly rivalry and competition the day brings is great fun. It generates nervous energy, teamwork and a desire to do one’s best. Sincere thanks to all those who contributed to a special day. The tribe captains and vice captains displayed great leadership and motivation for the students. The Kathryn Poulton memorial trophy was awarded to Oscar F. He displayed outstanding team spirit, encouragement, and effort on the day. Special congratulations to two U7 record breakers. An incredible effort from our younger students. Record breaker: U7 long jump Kyle H Record breaker: U7 200m, 400m, long jump, and high jump Sophie K After eleven years, Benjamin tribe were announced as deserving winners during the presentation ceremony. Tribal scores from the carnival were as follows:

First Place - Benjamin Second Place - Ephraim

Third Place - Zebulun Fourth Place – Judah Congratulations to all the participants and Benjamin!

ACTIVITIES & ACHIEVEMENTS SA Tennis Championships Eli W, Nate W, Seema M and Alyssa N all competed in the School Sport SA (State) Individual Tennis Championships in March. At the competition in the Year 7/8 cohort, there were approximately 50 tennis players. Eli played 2 games and successfully reached the quarter finals. He played against a 4th seeded player but due to the interruption of the rain, the game ended, and the final score was 4-1 to Eli’s opponent. Nate played 5 games in the minor round and successfully won 4 of these games. As a result, he reached the quarter finals. Unfortunately, Nate was defeated by his opponent 6-4. Alyssa and Seema both faced extremely tough opponents in the first round (those two eventually finished 2nd and 3rd), so subsequently played in the Challenge Round. They both still enjoyed the experience as they learned a lot about their own games. Well done, what an achievement for all to compete in the School Sport SA (State) Individual Tennis Championships. It was also very exciting to hear Year 7 student Eli was invited by Sandon Stolle (once ranked No. 2 in world doubles) to train with the State U12 Tennis Squad (approx. 8 players are in the squad)! Congratulations Eli on this significant achievement. Congratulations also to his family, as without their support and investment, these standards are rarely reached.
