A strong, supportive community is essential to critically ill children and their families. During difficult times, families in the mid-Atlantic region rely on the Casey Cares Foundation, a non-profit organization that offers a variety of meaningful, family-focused programming.

The Casey Cares Foundation serves critically ill children with diagnoses such as leukemia, sarcoma, brain tumors, cystic fibrosis, blood disorders or lymphoma. The organization supports the children and their families with activities and programs like movie nights, pajama parties, tickets to sporting events and more. “Casey Cares knows that the best palliative care comes from continuous, ongoing support,” said Deputy Associate Director Erin Ritter. “Casey Cares’ bi-monthly customized programs give families dozens of opportunities to create positive family memories.” Such special work requires a special space, and the relationship between St. John Properties and the Casey Cares Foundation is unique: Six months after the non-profit lost its previous office to a fire, St. John Properties provided them new office space quickly. “They also allowed us to customize the space using the talents of our generous donors,” Ritter said. “We’ve been here for

on the phone,” Ritter said, “and usually see someone within the day they’re called.” The current Casey Cares location is centrally located and convenient for donors and volunteers to visit and for families to pick up promotions for special events. Additionally, the space comfortably accommodates 30 interns and volunteers, and each of the 10 full- time employees has a private office to keep families’ information confidential. In the case of St. John Properties and the Casey Cares Foundation, one community supports another. Casey Cares lifts the spirits of critically ill children and their families. That motivates countless volunteers and donors, including St. John Properties. “We are very much a community- supported organization,” Ritter said, “and we rely on small- and mid-sized companies to support our mission. Our location makes it simple for anyone to come in and see what we’re all about!”

I n this time of countless technological advancements, there are no limits. Unfortunately, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a neurological disease that weakens muscles and drastically reduces physical function, typically limits patients’ access to activities they love.

The current chapter location includes a conference room for physical and virtual meetings, the Equipment Learning Lab for instructing patients and caregivers about using medical equipment and personal offices for counseling with patients and families and for fundraising work. “Our office staff consists of nine full- time employees — care services profes- sionals, event managers, fundraisers, administrative staff and interns throughout the year,” Rush-Negri said. seekers is based on current demand that we gather through business partnerships and meetings, in addition to labor market research of trends,” Murray said. “We have a wide variety of initiatives and services that ensure every business and individual is receiving customized services to build their success.” All the varied business and job seeker services and staff are now housed in one St. John Properties facility. “In order to fulfill our mission, we needed a space that could accommodate both business and job seeker services all in one location,” said Move Project Lead Bekki Leonard from AAWDC. “With the new space, the Career Center acts as the hub for all workforce/talent services for the county.”

Large, flexible meeting areas are important to how workforce development operates. “The center has seven large rooms that are used for workshops, training spaces and for hiring events,” Leonard said. “The center also has a resource center where individuals can access computers, printers, phones and a fax machine to help with their job search. The Workplace Excellence Café also provides a comfortable open space where businesses or job seekers can bring their devices, connect to the center’s public Wi-Fi and work in a professional environment.” With this St. John Properties location, businesses can better meet their hiring needs, center staff can best serve clients and job seekers can learn invaluable skills to improve their careers and the communities where they live.

E veryone loves exploring the world, and should have the opportunity to do so. At The Arc Baltimore, which serves adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, people of all ages and abilities can explore their surroundings.

The Arc, founded nearly 70 years ago, pro- vides an array of services, advocacy and support to people with a wide range of intel- lectual and developmental disabilities, including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome and more. These individu- als and their families receive support and advocacy through training, day and residen- tial services, treatment foster care, respite care, family support and education, public The Arc Baltimore WINDSOR CORPORATE PARK 2545 Lord Baltimore Drive Suites L-N Windsor Mill, MD 21224 410.298.5688 thearcbaltimore.org

policy advocacy, assistive technology ser- vices and information and referrals. Seven years ago, The Arc needed a change for their Woodlawn location. “As a result of our efforts to support people in getting jobs and getting out into the community, we were looking to downsize from a center of roughly 25,000 square feet to a space less than a third of the size,” Christopher Knoerlein, director of communications and grants, said. “We approached St. John Properties because of our longstanding relationship with the company; they contracted with us to hire grounds crews at 14 of their locations, helping us employ several dozen people. Since we have always had a positive experi- ence partnering with St. John Properties, we knew that it was the best decision to approach them in our search for a more suit- able space.” The Arc’s location with St. John Properties focuses on senior community needs. “It is a hub of activity where people socialize, take art and educational classes, utilize computer tablets and participate in special activities,” Knoerlein said. “Most importantly, the staff support each person individually with devel- oping a meaningful schedule where they

can explore their interests with like-minded people out in the surrounding neighbor- hood. They attend the movies, go shopping or get coffee with a friend, participate in a cultural event or visit a museum.” The St. John Properties space is integral to The Arc’s work in making all participants feel welcome. “Because many of the people who attend the center in Woodlawn have mobility impairments,” Knoerlein said, “St. John Properties worked with our director of day services to retrofit three of the bath- rooms to improve their accessibility and safety. They widened the stalls, installed accessible sinks with temperature regula- tion and automatic sensor features and fit- ted grab bars throughout. In addition, they installed a ramp in the rear of the building and are working with us in installing a more accessible front sidewalk entrance.” The Arc continues its good work, offering resources and opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to explore the world around them in positive, meaningful ways. Looking to the future, St. John Properties and The Arc intend to work together cohesively to make the world an inclusive place for people with disabilities.

O ne of the greatest ways to serve a community is to encourage each individual to live up to their potential — investing in the future of people is an investment in the future of communities, small and large.

Family Partnership of Frederick County RIVERSIDE TECHNOLOGY PARK 8420 Gas House Pike Suite EE Frederick, MD 21701 301.600.2771 frederickcountymd.gov

Family Partnership of Frederick County understands this. As said in its mission statement, the organization leverages community support and “empowers individuals and families of diverse backgrounds to be stable and self-reliant by building on their strengths and skills.” As a family support center, Family Partnership of Frederick County offers intergenerational programming in a single location at St. John Properties’ Riverside Technology Park in Frederick, Maryland. The Partnership offers educational services (ranging from virtual schooling to language courses), employment services, nurturing parenting programs, leadership and parent advisory meetings, health education and responsible fathers and empowering mothers programs. When searching for a location, the flexibility of St. John Properties’ management and building is what convinced the Partnership to choose this space. “St. John worked closely with us to design the space we needed to provide our services,” Cindy Kokoski, office manager of Family

Partnership, said. “We are unique because we needed staff offices as well as program space to serve our participants and their young children. We also needed an outdoor playground that was safe and secure. It was important for us to have parking for our vans in the back of the building and ample parking for staff and participants in the front of the building. St. John Properties was very patient and worked closely with us every step of the way.” Family Partnership is conveniently located and offers van transportation for participants located within 10 miles of the center. Inside the facility, “the layout of our space is designed with child development classrooms, as well as classrooms and a computer lab to assist our parents and youth with their individual program goals,” Kokoski said. Family Partnership enjoys the wide variety of ways the space can be used for different projects and tasks. “We also have ample office space for our administrators, case managers and child development

staff and a conference room for small group and individual meetings,” Kokoski said. “There is also space provided for storage of education, child development and administrative supplies. Additionally, we have a playground area with proper fencing directly behind our building to provide a safe outdoor area for our children when weather permits.” The space also includes a kitchen and dining area where participants enjoy meals during their program day. “This dining room space also provides a place for us to host speakers and meetings to inform and assist our participants and staff,” Kokoski said. “We have a lounge area for our youth to relax between program sessions and a group room that allows for a relaxed area for small group meeting sessions.” With a superb location from St. John Properties, Family Partnership of Frederick County can offer entire families the resources and instruction they need to reach their full potential.

F or many veterans returning home, their futures can feel like blank canvases — both exciting and overwhelming. The future holds endless opportunities, but stepping back into civilian life brings challenges, and one employer in particular wants this blank canvas to demonstrate a time of hope, not despair.

Flags of Valor (FOV), established in 2015, aims to hire as many veterans as possible. The manufacturer is located in Ashburn, Virginia, where it focuses on being philanthropic, creating classic American woodwork made in the U.S. and, of course, hiring veterans. FOV has been successful — in just three years, the company has hired more than 50 combat veterans, improved American supplier systems and given hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities. All of this makes working at FOV a meaningful experience for veterans whose patriotism continues even after they return home. “We serve all Americans who value the symbolism embodied in our national colors,” said Brian Steorts, FOV co-founder. “The products we create allow customers to experience a tangible expression of the emotion, pride, service and sacrifice that resonates from the American flag.” FOV’s strategic location with St. John Properties places the company in the greater D.C., Maryland and Virginia metro area. veterans call this region home, and remaining close to many Fortune 500 businesses and branches of federal government allows FOV to achieve its goals for production, philanthropy and veteran employment. Similar to veterans’ lives when returning to civilian life, “Our space was a blank canvas when we first looked at it,” Steorts said. “St. John Properties worked with us to build it out in a way that would suit all of our needs. We’ve needed to make additional changes since then, and St. John Properties has always been quick to respond to our needs and offer a helping hand in seeing things through quickly and efficiently.” FOV has grown quickly in the three years since its founding, and FOV’s location has grown alongside the company. “Our space began as a manufacturing and fulfillment operation,” Steorts said. “As our operation grew, we reconfigured our current St. John Properties suite to include a showroom, meeting and office space, and R&D facility. Our corporate leadership, marketing partners and product specialists work there daily.”

FOV leaders knew they couldn’t go wrong with a location from St. John Properties for a variety of reasons. “St. John Properties offers a portfolio of properties in great locations that offer tenants flexible options to meet their business needs,” Steorts said. “This was huge for FOV since it allowed us to do light manufacturing in a well-manicured, customer- focused environment.” FOV has filled its blank canvas with an ideal location, strong goals and positive community connections, and the company hopes to bring similar benefits to veterans returning home.
