A birthday party like no other
The Trinity Anglican Church Hall was vibrant with the voices of happy kids on January 14, as the community rallied to celebrate Caydence Andre’s tenth birthday. But the gathering was much more than a simple birthday party. Young Caydence, who actively volunteers much of her time to various organizations, wanted her special day to be a fundraiser in the memory of well-known local sports leader Brian Tardiff, who recently passed away from Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS. “She wanted to be involved,” said Caydence’s mother, Rachel Andre. — photos Francis Racine
Young Caydence was all smiles during the event.

Innovation Task Force to Champion Digital Change
A group of young, forward-thinking entrepre- neurs have formed a collective to promote ideas centred on innovation, technology and positive community economic development. “We real- ized ideas discussed over coffee need concrete action,” said Ryan Seale of SealeProjects. The Innovation Task Force of Cornwall & Area (ITF) was born. In September 2016, the group hosted the area’s first Hackathon, followed by another in November. The ITF define their “hackathons” as gatherings of innovative thinkers who engage in collaborative projects using technology and creative thinking. Judges choose the best ideas and cash prizes are presented to the winning teams. In total, 33 people participated. “Any recent effort to expose local residents to technology and innovation has been extremely well received,” admitted Kelly Bergeron of Code Heroes.“There is a strong appetite in Cornwall to learn, and we are prepared to step forward and help create new opportunities.” – Francis Racine

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy was recently elected chair of the Eastern Ontario Mayors’ Caucus, an advocacy group representing 11 urban centres in Eastern Ontario, on January 6. Mayor O’Shaughnessy succeeds mayor Bryan Paterson of Kingston. The EOMC represents 11 municipalities in Eastern Ontario, stretching from Cornwall in the east to Peterborough in the west. The mayors of Prescott, Brockville, Gananoque, Kingston, Belleville, Pembroke, Smiths Falls, Prince Edward County and Quinte West also form part of the EOMC. “I am thrilled to be leading the caucus as we look to advance the interests of Eastern Ontario towns and cities at Queen’s Park and Parliament Hill,” said mayor O’Shaughnessy.
Major upgrade to Cornwall Regional Airport Cornwall Regional Airport is about to become a more popular landing choice for pilots. The Airport Commission has completed a major upgrade to its fuel system and can now offer Jet A fuel as well as 100LL avgas. “The sale of fuel is an important service and the new upgrades will mean that even more pilots can choose to fuel up at our airport,” said Frank Prevost, chair of the Airport Commission. “The proceeds from fuel sales help to pay for the operation and maintenance of the airport.” Jet A fuel is available for the first time following the installation of a 3500 gallon tank and fuel pump. A new chip and pin upgrade to the payment system means that pilots can fuel up at any time of the day or night. The airport had been receiving requests for jet fuel for some time, sparking the decision to invest in the system upgrades, which cost approximately $140,000. Avgas is used in spark-ignited engines common to many light aircraft. – Francis Racine

Cornwall’s first female snowplow driver
FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca
While many people would feel intimidated sitting behind the steering wheel of large trucks or other behemoths, Elizabeth “Liz” Wilkenson is quite accustomed to them, having spent her career driving and operat- ing large machinery. Born in Nova Scotia, she moved to British Columbia when she was four and then Yukon when she was 19. There, she worked in a mine, alongside several men… and women. “There are a lot more women in the mines than people think,” she said, smiling. “It was a dangerous job though.” There, she drove a 170-ton piece of equip- ment. This in turn led her to be quite at ease around heavy machinery. “The tires on it were much bigger than I am,” she recalled. But likemany other mines, the one where the woman worked at eventually closed. “It happens to a lot of mines,” she said. So how did Wilkenson end up driving snowplows in Cornwall? “My husband and I used to work for MarathonDrilling in Greely, so we had to move and we wanted to get a place close to our work, but not too close,” she said. “At the time, I worked in Toronto and drove back and forth,” added her husband. “I used to always stop in Cornwall. It’s a great town and I always loved it.” Wilkenson started working for the City in the summer with the hot asphalt. “It’s hard, hot work, but I like it,” she explained. Coincidently, she also might very well be the first woman to hold the job. “I’m not sure about that,” she said laughing. “But I haven’t seen any other women.” From there, Wilkenson decided to try her chance with snowplowing. “They welcomed me with open arms,” she said. “They were very nice during my training and they con- tinue to be supportive.” During her training, she had to sit next to another snowplow operator in order to learn the ropes of the job. Finally, she was given her chance to shine. “On my very first run, I was nervous,” she admitted. “But later on, it got easier.” Considering it’s Wilkenson’s first winter behind the wheel of the snowplow, she’s been tasked with cleaning the streets over- night. “The shifts are from 11 at night to

seven in the morning,” she said. “But I love it, because there’s a lot less people on the streets.” The woman cleans off some of the busiest streets in Cornwall, such as Sydney, Pitt and Cumberland Street, to name a few. Her biggest challenge consists of motor- ists who park their cars on the road, despite the warning from the City not to do so. “I just can’t understand why some people still park on the road, even in a complete snowstorm,” she said. “The fines don’t seem to scare them.” When there hasn’t been any recent snow- fall, Wilkenson and other snowplow drivers haul snow from several areas and clean up around parking meters. The woman stressed that streets can be slippery, even for the huge plows. “It’s all a matter of taking your time.” But even though Wilkenson is the first female driver to plow the streets of Cornwall, she’s quite humble about the whole thing. “Some city workers are very happy about
it,” she explained. “I just don’t like attracting too much attention.”
Menard Bros. partners with Holmes Approved Homes One of Cornwall’s long-standing home builders has partnered with Mike Holmes, the Toronto- area contractor turned reality-show celebrity, to champion proper building techniques. Mike Holmes became a household name due to the popularity of the HGTV home renovation show Holmes on Homes. With his philosophy of Make it Right , Holmes has been a strong advocate of the importance of proper construction practices. – Francis Racine

Autochtones : La PPO publie un rapport d’incident critique
CLASSIFIED ADS PETITES ANNONCES DEADLINE: FRIDAY — 3 P.M. HEURE DE TOMBÉE: VENDREDI — 15H
New tool to fight potholes The City of Cornwall now has a new tool in the fight against potholes throughout the city. This hot mix transporter is designed for small and medium patch jobs to road surfaces. This unit has heated compartments to maintain patch- ing material that creates a stronger bond to the affected road surface versus using a cold patch fill as previously used. City staff will be out using the new hot mix transporter in the near future.
