Hello to all our families,

SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST IN THIS ISSUE:

What a wonderful fortnight of celebration at The Lakes. A massive thank you to all staff, students and parents/carers who have in some way contributed to these special events across our college. Congratulations to our Year 3&4 students who for the past 3 days have been on camp. For some students, it was the first time being away from home. I hope it was a great experience for our students and staff who attended. Last week we enjoyed a wonderful celebration of Book Week 2023. For me, these types of activities and events are what school is all about. Dressing up on special days is such a fun way to enjoy and promote a love of reading. It was certainly a great parade, and the staff and student costumes were simply amazing. A big shout out to all our parents and carers for supporting our students to source or make costumes and getting fully into the spirit of the event. This is not always an easy thing to do but know that your commitment was worth it.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT

The Children ’ s Book Council of Australia presents annual awards to books of literary merit, for outstanding contribution to Australian children's literature. Congratulations to all the winners of the 2023 Children ’ s Book Council of Australia Awards. Many of the books are available in the school library for our students to enjoy. Book week is also a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and thank Megan De Marco for her work in our school library across our college. Her organisation with the annual book fair on the Primary Campus has been outstanding, providing families a chance to purchase a range of books. There is a strong reading culture on our Primary Campus, and we want to keep getting even better. Our reading data is improving all the time and we are seen as a leader or “ influencer ” in this area across our local schools. We have great teachers, a superb Library and of course a strong level of parent/carer support to encourage reading at home.

SO HOW DO WE KEEP WORKING TO ENSURE WE REMAIN A STRONG READING SCHOOL?

At school, we will achieve this through a very strategic and detailed professional learning plan based on ensuring high levels of staff knowledge around high quality teaching for reading and how we deliver this consistently across the whole school each day. At home, you can assist your child to find an extra 10 minutes a day to read. It might be as simple as 10 minutes less on technology or reading for 10 minutes before dinner. We know that you can become better at something if you focus on it more. Reading becomes easier and more enjoyable the more you do it! I have mentioned this before but have a think about this: If your child currently reads for just 1 minute a day, they will read 21,000 words this year. Increasing this to 10 minutes a day will lead to 321,000 words being read in a year. It also works for those students that are already reading for the suggested 15 minutes a day. Currently these readers would be churning through 1.8 million words a year. Ten minutes more would take this to over 2.7 million!

Help your child to choose different types of books to read and take turns to read with them. Talk about the book and look for words to pay special attention to. Most importantly, make the experience as fun and engaging as possible.

EMBRACING NEURODIVERSITY: UNDERSTANDING OUR UNIQUE STUDENTS

At The Lakes South Morang College, our school community is at the heart of everything we do. We are proud to have a diverse group of students, each with their own strengths, challenges, and perspectives. One important aspect of this diversity is neurodiversity, which encompasses the natural variation in brain function and neurological differences among individuals. Understanding and embracing neurodiversity is vital to supporting all our children's growth and development within our school community. Neurodiversity includes a broad range of neurological conditions such as autism, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and dyslexia (reading difficulty). It's essential for us as educators and parents/carers to recognise that these differences are not deficits, but rather variations in how our children perceive and interact with the world around them.

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

We believe in celebrating our students' strengths and interests while providing them with a supportive and nurturing environment. Instead of focusing solely on what our students may find challenging, we acknowledge their unique abilities and accomplishments. By doing so, we can foster an inclusive atmosphere that encourages all our students to reach their full potential. At The Lakes, as part of our wellbeing teaching, we focus on understanding diversity, celebrating differences, and showing respect to others. Teaching our students these values help to create an inclusive environment, where all students feel safe and valued. It will foster a culture of kindness and respect among all students. We celebrate differences and recognise that every child brings something unique to our school community. Our school vision states that we will be curious, creative, open to challenge and have a positive impact on all members of our community. We are committed to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

FATHERS & SPECIAL PERSONS DAY BREAKFAST

This community connecting event is run by our school and Fundraising Committee and will be held in front of the Music area from 8am – 8.45am on Friday 8 th September on the Primary Campus. Egg and Bacon rolls and a coffee cart will be offered free of charge to celebrate our Fathers and special males in our lives. This is a great time for people to spend some time together and celebrate with our kids.

Some events leading up to the end of Term 3:

Primary Parent/Carer Teacher Interviews – Tuesday 12 th September from 3.30pm - 8pm. This is a student free day for students. Students will be expected to attend their relevant interviews with their families. Footy Day – Thursday 14 th September. Students are encouraged to wear their footy colours with pride. Please check Sentral for the lunchtime special offered by the canteen on the day. End of Term Assembly – Friday 15 th September at 12 noon in our Primary Campus Gym. Students will be dismissed on the last day of term at 1.15pm.

Have a wonderful weekend.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

PRIMARY REFLECTION ELISE YEAR 3 SRC

Wow! The Year 3 students have had a crazy week. We left for Year 3 & 4 camp on Wednesday 30 th August, which was very exciting. We got to do lots of activities which included the flying fox, archery, traditional Bush Hut Building and Bush Survival Skills, damper cooking and low ropes course. We saw lots of animals, including horses, sheep, kangaroos and a wombat. We did lots of bush walking too, which was fun. We loved the food there, especially dessert and the snacks. We had lots of laughs with our teachers who went, and we can ’ t wait to go to camp next year, in 2024. The Year 3 students are counting down the days until Term 3 ends, 13 school days left.

SECONDARY REFLECTION ANHAD & AALIYAH YEAR 10 SRC

This term has been eventful and engaging thus far, marked by a couple of exciting highlights for the Year 10’ s. We had an invaluable visit to La Trobe University, where we got a firsthand glimpse of the dry labs and all the opportunities they offer. The university tour provided us with insights into potential academic pathways and expanded a lot of our horizons. Additionally, our full - day City Experience was a refreshing break from routine. Looking ahead, we are eagerly anticipating more hands - on experiences and learning opportunities that the rest of the year will bring, as well as further exploration and discovery within both academic and city contexts.

FAMILY MATH

Below is a link to play a great maths game with the family that involves many mathematical strategies such as: multiplicative thinking, addition, problem solving, area, perimeter, mathematical thinking, calculating, solving, visualising, formulating, explaining their thinking.

Land Grab (also known by other names, such as Multiplication Toss and Multiplication Paddocks) is a widely played game for exploring the area model of multiplication and consolidating student understanding of arrays. Using grid paper and a different colour marker/ pencils, each player takes turns rolling two dice (e.g., two 6 - sided dice; two 10 - sided dice) and marking out the associated array. For example, if a player rolls a 6 and a 4, they create a rectangle with these dimensions on the grid paper in their colour, record the associated number sentence, and claim this parcel of land (i.e., 24 squares; see Figure 1). Play continues until players have claimed all the squares of land on the grid paper. The player who secures the most land overall is declared the winner. Remember for lower grades you may play this game using alternative strategies such as addition or subtraction. A more challenging version of Land Grab would be to play with two 10 - sided dice and allow players to choose the 2 - digit number they create on their turn. For example, if the player rolled a 6 and a 4, they could create either the number 46 or 64. They would then need to attempt to claim this quantity of land by enclosing it in a rectangle (e.g., 64 = 8 × 8 or 16 × 4 etc.). This version would need to be played on larger grid paper (e.g., 37 by 27).

What are some other ways you can play this game?

Enjoy

SPORT: WHERE LESSONS EXTEND BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Reflecting on the integral role that sport, physical education, and health play in the holistic development of our students. SPORT: WHERE LESSONS EXTEND BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Engaging in sports isn't just about scoring goals or winning games; it's about building character, teamwork, and resilience. Whether on the field, court, or track, students learn to set goals, work collaboratively, and handle victory and defeat with grace. Sport teaches them the value of discipline, time management, and pushing their boundaries to achieve success. PHYSICAL EDUCATION: NURTURING WELL - ROUNDED INDIVIDUALS Physical education classes are essential for nurturing healthy bodies and minds. Regular physical activity not only has benefits for the body, it also boosts cognitive function. PE classes instil lifelong habits of staying active, which in turn, reduce the risk of various health issues.

HEALTH EDUCATION: EMPOWERING INFORMED CHOICES Equipping students with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their health is paramount. When students understand the importance of making informed health choices, they are better equipped to lead balanced lives and contribute positively to their communities.

WHY THE TRIO MATTERS

The synergy between sport, physical education, and health education creates a foundation for students to thrive academically, physically, and socially. Research consistently shows that active students tend to have improved concentration, better problem - solving skills, and enhanced self - esteem. By promoting a holistic approach to education, we set our students up for success in all areas of life.

GETTING INVOLVED

We encourage both students and parents to get involved in the school's sporting events, encourage regular physical activity outside of school hours, and engage in open conversations about health - related topics. Remember, our collective efforts make a significant impact on the well - being of our school community.

We have loved swimming! A lot! Let me tell you more about swimming. When we first started swimming, we felt excited because we wanted to meet our teachers. Everyone was so excited to swim! Some of us felt a little bit shy. When we saw all our friends swimming, we all felt happy to go into the swimming pool. We did lots of different things like - freestyle, backstroke, dolphin kick and push glide. For a reward, we used sinker toys. The best part of swimming is when we first get to hop in the pool because we go on our tummies and keep blowing bubbles. We have all loved swimming this year. We hope we get to do it again next year! Monica and Elisa, Year 2

PRIMARY SWIMMING PROGRAM This term students from Years 1, 2 and 3 were offered the opportunity to participate in the weekly swimming program at King Swim.

Policy—http://www.thelakes.edu.au/uploads/8/3/9/0/83901006/personal_property_policy_2022.pdf

The Lakes understands that students may sometimes like to bring items of personal property to school. The Department of Education and Training does not have insurance for personal property of staff, students and visitors. The Lakes does not take responsibility for items of personal property that are lost, stolen or damaged at school or during school activities. Damage to personal property brought to school is the responsibility of the owner of that property. The Lakes South Morang College encourages students not to bring items of value to school, or to obtain appropriate insurance for such items. If students bring items of value to school, they should be handed to school administration for secure storage at the office until the end of the day, when the items may be collected by the student and/or parent/carer.

SHARING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING: EDUTECH 2023

What an enriching experience it was to visit the 2023 EduTECH conference as I navigated through the expansive venue, engaged in discussions with vendors and reconnected with colleagues current and former. My first day was dedicated to exploring the trade show floor where I conversed with industry experts and kept up to date with the latest technological trends. With newfound inspiration, I am now contemplating strategies to enhance the technology landscape at The Lakes to maintain and enhance the dynamic and engaging experience we provide. My second day led me to plunge into rapid - fire learning sessions, akin to lightning rounds, each spanning 20 - minute durations but delivering impactful insights from the get - go. I also participated in more extensive sessions, affording hands - on experience with various tools and technologies, unveiling features and concepts for our existing resources that weren't on my radar. I can't wait to implement some of the things I learnt and share these discoveries with our staff! Justin I had heard great things from other staff about the EduTECH conference, but what I was not expecting was one of the greatest and exciting professional development sessions I have ever been to. Over the two days I was able to connect and interact with fellow staff and from other schools, view new and exciting ideas on how to implement technology across the whole school as well as work with new companies and programs to bring to The Lakes. I was particularly excited to see how other schools were including AI into their learning programs and how it was being managed. Between each learning session I wandered the stalls, talked to different companies about what they offered and even got to play with some VR and new robots. We are in a new age of technology where we have the opportunity to adapt, enhance and embrace a new way of teaching and learning. I look forward to sharing the new ideas with our learning community. Liam

The EduTECH conference experience was a fascinating blend of technology and education. It felt like stepping into a technology version of Comic - Con, with a seemingly endless array of stalls and innovations that left me in awe. What caught my attention was the exploration of Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. While virtual events can never replace the energy of in - person gatherings, they offer an array of unique advantages that left me both impressed and excited. On my first day, I found myself immersed in a multitude of conferences that delved into unlocking the potential of AI in education and incorporating VR learning experiences into classrooms. The possibilities seemed boundless. Witnessing educators and tech enthusiasts come together to discuss the merging of these technological advancements with education was mind bending. Day two was equally enthralling as I attended conferences that focused on reversing the decline in writing standards, integrating 3D printers for hands - on learning, and delving into the latest features in collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams. These sessions showcased how technology is becoming intricately woven into the fabric of education, enhancing engagement and learning outcomes. As the day progressed, I had the chance to traverse the stalls. From immersive learning platforms that transported students to forests, deserts and planes, to the unveiling of STEM Education Innovations that encouraged budding scientists and engineers, and the latest advancements in classroom management software that streamlined teaching approaches—it was an intellectual playground of possibilities. What struck me repeatedly was the emphasis on creativity and immersion in education, facilitated by technology in easily digestible fragments. The integration of AI, VR, and other tools wasn't just about using gadgets—it was about breathing life into lessons, sparking curiosity, and making learning a captivating adventure. I am excited to integrate the newfound insights and tools that I discovered during those two days and share it with the school. Stevce
