EAM-Mosca Announces $20.6M Expansion In PA

Hazle Township, Pennsylvania based EAM-Mosca Corp., one of Pennsylvania’s premier innovation-focused manufacturers, announced breaking ground on a new facility at its headquarters. The $9 million complete renovation of 525 Jaycee Drive is adjacent to EAM-Mosca’s existing headquarters at 675 Jaycee Drive. The new facility is part of a larger $20.6 million strategic initiative to expand the com- pany’s operational footprint within the state in the coming years. It allows for the retention of 157 employees statewide and the creation of 50 new positions. The planned addition will transform the current 165,000-square-foot, single-building headquarters into a 283,000-square-foot, two-building campus set on 50 acres. More than 30,000 square feet of modern, open office space will enable more collaboration within and across departments and 250,000 square feet will expand operations to meet customer demand. EAM-Mosca’s expansion project is gar- nering strong support throughout the state, including from the State of Pennsylvania.

Economic forecasts and impact of global politics only muddy the waters unless, of course, there is a keynote speaker who has the ability to “bring simple sensemaking to the complexities of the world econo- my, politics and technology.” Attendees of the global summit had the good fortune to witness a presentation from such a speaker. According to her impressive bio, Dr. Malmgren is an American tech- nology entrepreneur and economist. She has advised presidents and prime ministers, she served George W. Bush in the White House as a Special Assistant to the President National Economic Council, and her most recent bestseller, “The Infinite Leader,” won the International Press Award for the Best Book on Leadership for 2021. Her previous book, “The Leadership Lab,” was named Business Book of the Year CONTINUED ON PAGE 26 Dr. Pippa Malmgren delivered a compelling presentation to more than 150 global leaders at the ICCA/WCO Global Summit, which took place at the Fairmont Banff Springs in Banff, Alberta.

Core Competency

My administration will continue to aggressively compete for manufacturing projects like this one and make Pennsyl- vania an economic powerhouse.” Christian Wiethuechter, President and Chief Executive Officer at EAM-Mosca, said, “Part of the reason we were selected by the Governor’s Action Team is that these are higher technology jobs. There’s a true understanding of client needs and a lot of engineering rigor on the mechani- cal and electrical side to produce a highly automated solu- tion that meets an unmet need no one else has been able to satisfy, and that’s what’s made us successful.” Upon completion, the facility will be known as the Headquarters for the Americas, serving clients across Lat- in America, Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Jan Wessel, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Offi- cer at EAM-Mosca, said, “This is the largest step taken in our growth trajectory, and we see it not as an isolated in- vestment but as the continued evolution of our company.” The planned aggregate investment of $20.6 million will include the expansion and renovation of headquarter fa- cilities and product portfolio expansions, including Reiso- pack strapping machines and Movitec stretch wrappers. It will also integrate new automation and digitization tech- nologies and community-focused initiatives to fuel compa- ny pipelines with a new generation of talent.

2020 and is a critical step in the growth strategy and ex- pansion of the company. The existing headquarters build- ing currently houses all corporate functions, production of strapping and machinery, and all central services. The reconstruction will deliver on a multi-year plan to establish a dedicated Machinery Center of Excellence for highly automated strapping systems, focusing largely on product development and customization for end-of-line packaging equipment. The existing facility will retain com- pany executive offices and central services while further focusing as the Center of Excellence in innovation and production for fully recyclable strapping and consumables. The current expansion solves growing pains for the company and pays homage to a longstanding company legacy. EAM-Mosca, a family company, credits its dedicat- ed employees with helping to foster the strong company culture that enables its ongoing worldwide reputation as a

The building will also boast a first-of-its-kind customer showroom, making company headquarters in Pennsylva- nia a more convenient midpoint for clients throughout the Americas. The showroom will display many of the com- pany’s highly automated machines where customers are hosted from a sales and service standpoint. The reconstruction of the facility is scheduled to be completed with occupancy by February 2024. “This is not just a one-time investment or expansion. Since 2017, we’ve already invested over $20 million in our productive operations,” said Wessel. “This is just continu- ing our market success to reinvest and grow our business, bringing our total of recent investments in Pennsylvania to nearly $50 million in less than 10 years.” EAM-Mosca’s new facility was acquired in December

top industry leader in high-end, automatic strapping systems and other end-of-line packaging solutions. “What has built this company is its cul- ture,” said John D’Ottavio, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at EAM-Mosca. “The culture is here to give our customers exactly what they need, and in the process, we also have created a wonderful environment for our employ- ees.” At EAM-Mosca, employee tenure is measured in decades, not years. The new facility will boast several cutting-edge fea- tures and custom-designed spaces for its employees. Its 15,000 square feet of ren- ovated office space is designed to foster collaboration both within and across com- pany departments. The natural flow of fur- niture and space is expressly intended to reflect the company’s dedication to quality, focus on superior design, and high stan- dards of excellence. “Part of that over $20 million invest- ment is the realization that we need to de- velop training programs to build the next generation of folks that will be able to both design and produce our machines and the strapping products. That’s an investment in the community realizing that developing the workforce is critical to our future,” said D’Ottavio. In 1989, seven years after opening its doors, EAM-Mosca moved its company headquarters from Long Island, New York to Pennsylvania. The company leadership has sought to make EAM-Mosca an inte- gral part of its local community and estab- lish itself as a pillar of the larger Pennsylva- nia business community.

The Apstar HG2 Flexo Folder Gluer by Haire Group.

“I worked along with Derek Volk and his exceptional team to collec- tively identify the best machinery solutions for Volk's rapidly growing business,” said Haire Group’s Tim Wilson, Director, National Accounts. “Haire Group's Apstar line proved to be the best investment. As such, Volk Packaging is excited to announce that they will be installing two new, state-of-the-art Apstar machines. Haire Group and Volk Packaging have natural synergy through their shared focus on customer support. With the installation of the two new Apstars, Volk Packaging will be able to continue their nearly 60-year tradition of providing the best service in New England to their 1,000 plus customers.” With the purchase of two of Haire Group's Apstars, Volk Packaging CEO Derek Volk said that they will have the most impressive and versa- tile machine centers on the East Coast. “Cutting-edge machinery, fantastic customer service, and a commit- ment to customer success makes us who we are. The addition of these new machines will increase our capacity and further supports our com- mitment to customer success," Volk said. Volk Packaging will also be installing a high-speed production line uti- lizing equipment from WSA, Ringwood Ducker, AG Stacker, and Inspire Automation, that will include conveyors, transfer carts, robotics, bundlers, double-bundlers, unitizers, a bundle breaker, a stretch wrapper and more. “We purchased a new flexo in 2019 but never imagined our business would grow by almost 50 percent between 2019 and 2023. We need more machinery to live out my grandfather’s mantra that ‘our customers are our bread and butter,’” Volk said. “It is critical that we acquire the firepower and capabilities to provide the exceptional service that our cus- tomers have become accustomed to."

Domtar Shares Approach, Outlook on ESG Issues At MX.0 Southeast Event Fort Mill, South Carolina based Domtar, a part of the Paper Excellence group of companies, announced its appear- ance at the 3rd MX.0 Southeast Event where it shared its approach and outlook on Environmental, Social and Gov- ernance (ESG) issues. Paige Goff, Domtar’s Vice President of Sustainability, spoke to business leaders at the June event which fo- cused on data-driven, resilient and sustainable manufac- turing. When people talk about costs as a barrier to being more sustainable, Goff counters that it’s more expensive to do nothing. “There is an initial investment, but it pays off in the long run,” she says. “Our customers expect us to do the right thing and be responsible stewards of the environment. Our reputational risk is their reputational risk.” Similarly, she says, an effective ESG approach is import- ant for recruiting and retaining talent. The E in ESG gets the most attention, with the emphasis on environmental responsibility and care for natural resources. It’s an area where Domtar has been a leader, particularly in forestry. But the G also plays a crucial role in Domtar’s ESG ap- proach. Governance is how Domtar connects the dots from senior leadership to the frontlines of manufacturing, Goff says. Their ESG committee includes leaders from

across the organization with a diverse collection of roles and responsibilities. To lead efforts on the company’s six sustainability prior- ities, Domtar created working groups with subject matter experts in each area. These groups focus on putting into practice the improvements that will advance Domtar in water, waste, emissions, fiber sourcing, safety, community engagement, and diversity and inclusion. “Though carbon is the ‘it’ word right now,” Goff says, “We have long been focused on the bigger picture. Our ESG committee is deliberate about our environmental stewardship in a broad range of areas, including water management, responsible fiber procurement, transporta- tion and more. “These really take our efforts beyond just carbon and emissions — though that’s important — to see how we can improve in a number of areas. “Our social responsibility is important to us. We have a legacy of being a good neighbor in our communities, long before ESG was its name. We continue to invest in the places where we operate so that our employees and our communities will thrive together.” Domtar makes products that people around the world rely on every day. The company designs, manufactures, markets and distributes a wide variety of communication, specialty and packaging papers, market pulp and airlaid nonwovens. For more information on Domtar, its products and its initiatives, visit domtar.com .

Hebron, Kentucky based Zumbiel Packaging, a leading provider of innovative paperboard packaging solutions since 1843, announced its recent acquisition of an HP PageWide T470S Press. This investment not only enhanc- es Zumbiel Packaging's folding carton production capabil- ities but also represents the dawn of a new era in automat- ed production workflows for the paperboard packaging sector. and Best Book on Leadership in 2019 and won the Inter- national Press Award 2020 and the NYC Library Big Apple Award. She has been named one of the Fifty Top Inspiring Women in the UK and longlisted by Computer Weekly as a Most Influential Women in Tech for 2019, 2020 and 2021. To say Dr. Pippa Malmgren is well-credentialed and emi- nently qualified to present to a global audience of contain- erboard industry executives is an understatement. “Boxes are a wonderful indicator of what’s going on in the economy, but we are at a pivotal moment in history. So what will the demand for boxes be in this new digi- tal world?” she asked, intriguing her audience by replying that she sees an incredible rise in the demand for boxes, but to understand the hows and whys of it all, we will have to do some “horizon scanning,” and invited her audience to accompany her on a “tour of the world economy.” Globalization is not over, not by a long shot, Dr. Malmgren insisted. Instead of the old definition of global- ization – all the jobs and all the manufacturing are going to China – we have a new definition: supply chains are shortening, so all the jobs and all the manufacturing are going…everywhere! “This is a picture we haven’t seen before and is caus- ing the leaders of capitalism to become very creative,” she said. “What I see is a big uptick in the creativity, innovation and the creation of new businesses and products every- where in the world, ultimately resulting in the use of more boxes.” The United States is still the epicenter of where inves- tor interest lies. Everywhere else in the world, investors and entrepreneurs are trying to figure out how to get their interests in not only the U.S. but in North America's other countries, Mexico and Canada, both of which she said are quickly becoming the “new China.” Even Saudi Arabia is realizing that entrepreneurial cre- ativity is essential to the future of their economy. The coun- try is building a massive city state called Neom and along with the rest of the Middle East, is now creating business- es in a way we’ve never seen before. In addition, Africa is “booming and growing rapidly.” And yes, China continues to grow because it continues to interface with all of the other economies while pursuing its “belt and roads” strat- egy, which is about building supply chains so its economy can support itself and have access to raw materials and thus, finished products. Concurrently, Dr. Malgren noted, the world is experi- encing an incredible wave of entrepreneurship; people are realizing they’re going to be living longer and that they haven’t saved enough money. They are, however, excit- ed about new opportunities the new landscape presents. This was made abundantly clear by the Covid pandemic, which taught people that there are new ways to work. It’s clear from the data, suggested Dr. Malmgren, that more and more people are launching their own businesses

customers,” suggesting to her audience of box makers that this is really a great thing because the money is going everywhere, not only Silicon Valley. Dr Malmgren said that Austin, Texas is the new Silicon Valley. And so is Detroit and Nashville and Charlotte. But it’s also booming places like Nairobi and Lisbon and many other places where cap- ital is moving, which means a lot more innovation and a better future for all involved. Additionally, Dr. Malmgren noted, people both young and old are using Zoom to create value in ways thay hav- en’t before and they’re doing it with a mobile phone, which by the way, contains more computational power than we needed to get a human being to the moon! “NASA could only have dreamed of this power back in the 1960s and now everyone has one in their pocket,” she said. “There are those who know how to use it and those who don’t, but somebody does and we can count on the innovation coming from that.” Then came the “buckle your seat belt" moment. Dr Malmgren said there are innovations happening at the cutting edge of the world economy that she thinks will cre- ate a world where we don’t have to worry so much about whether the earth is going to be protected: the Moonshot. We are about to go back to the moon. Humanity is about to leap back into space. Why are we bothering to spend money on space? The answer is that there are many space-based solutions to

and the new wave of entrepreneurs don’t behave likethe old ones. People over 55, who are the are the fastest growing component of the labor market in most industri- alized countries, are bringing the skills learned over a life- time back into the economy again. So, it’s not just young entrepreneurs driving innovation and instead of working for one employer, they are working for many. They have multiple income streams. If something goes wrong with one revenue stream, there is another to replace it. And not everything is focused on Silicon Valley. Dr. Malmgren said there is a realization that the world is not only about software and Silicon Valley. (It didn’t want to touch manufacturing because that went to China.) But now Silicon Valley is realizing it has to build things again because when supply chains are shortened, manufactur- ing comes back, which means, she said, “Stuff is going to have to go in boxes, a lot of them. And this has created a new category of what is going in those boxes. It used to be we had hardware and software but now it seems that everything is a combination of the two. It’s the interface between the hardware and the software where the value lies and where the revenue models work. There is no word for this yet so I invented one. I call it ‘shardware.’” Peripherally, investors have stopped looking for “uni- corns,” they are now looking for “workhorses,” companies that “generates genuine, unimpaired cash flow from real

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

between inflation and innovation. “All of you will be con- cerned about inflation because that hits your business very directly. With new innovations in energy, resources, and connectivity, I think innovation is winning this race and personally, I see a lot of products in your boxes.” The idea of where we’re going in the box industry comes down to outer space. One would think that this has nothing to do with the box industry, but Dr. Malmgren pos- its it has everything to do with the box industry. “It also has everything to do with the mindset you bring to the work you’re doing. We’ve all been trained to think in terms of scarcity our entire careers. It’s the way things have always been. Prices are determined by scarcity. I’m asking you to think about a world where we may have abundance and what that would mean for the future of what you’re doing.” In conclusion, Dr. Malmgren said, “I’m not sure we’re going to need boxes on the moon but going to the moon means that a lot of people are going to be needing a lot more boxes. We’re at an extraordinary moment in history and leadership now is much more about imagination than it is about analytics. None of your analytics can capture what I’ve just described because it hasn’t happened be- fore. This is completely new territory.” Dr. Pippa Malmgren

pretty much all of our earthbound problems. We are go- ing to harness the power of the sun with something called “space based solar power.” Malmgren said that Cal Tech has proven with a prototype they can put mirrors on a sat- ellite in space, take the sun's rays, convert them into radio waves, beam them back to earth and produce an unlim- ited power supply for the electrical grid. “Cheap, green electricity, it’s a revolution.” Also, the Saudis have announced they are backing the British to build the first space-based solar power station over the North Sea to beam power into Great Britain. An- other revolution. Then there's the ability to harvest all the raw materials we need for all our high-tech products by asteroid mining. Dr. Malmgren said this all sounds like sci- ence fiction but she assured the audience this is real. The value of of the raw materials on the asteroid Psy- che is worth an estimated 10,000 quadrillion U.S. dollars! To put that number into perspective, the entire world econ- omy in 2022 was worth only $105 trillion. “We will be able to have all the raw materials we need without ripping up planet earth. Another revolution.” Then there is data collection. Every piece of hardware we own, from our cell phones to our automobiles to our televisions, even our refrigerators, are collecting data. All the time. Ultimately, all of the issues, from the race to con- quer space to those involving digital currency, is a race
