WENDOVER | The Summer Solstice is upon us and at the Papanack Zoo in Wendover native elders from across Eastern Ontario gathered to hold a traditional blessing ceremony in honour of the season.
The regional zoo and exotic wildlife reha- bilitation and breeding centre is home at present to three young bald eagles which are recovering from injuries they sustained in the wild.
The eagle is a powerful totem animal in many of the aboriginal myth cycles of Can- ada and is the reason for holding a summer solstice ceremony June 21 at Papanack Zoo this year.

Plus de 150 finissants et finissantes ont vu leurs efforts des quatre dernières an- nées récompensés lors de la remise des diplômes de l’École secondaire catholique L’Escale de Rockland, qui a eu lieu le 20 juin dernier à l’église Très-Sainte-Trinité. Michelle Tabor s’est démarquée en obten- ant la prestigieuse médaille de bronze du Gouverneur général du Canada, remise à l’élève qui a cumulé la plus haute moyenne académique. La moyenne de ses 30 meil- leurs crédits au secondaire est de 92,9%. Elle a obtenu également la médaille d’or de l’école ainsi que la bourse du Conseil sco- laire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien
d’une valeur de 1000$. De plus, elle a ob- tenu une bourse de 150$ de L’Escale et du Vieux chaudron pour la meilleure moyenne dans le cours d’étude de l’alimentation et la nutrition 12e année ainsi qu’une bourse de 250$ des Chevaliers de Colomb pour son leadership religieux. Adrienne Brassard, qui a terminé avec une moyenne de 91,9% pour ses 30 crédits, a remporté la médaille de bronze. Celle qui a eu l’honneur de présenter le discours d’adieu a remporté aussi une bourse de 150$ du Club Optimiste de Rockland pour la meilleure moyenne dans le cours Indivi-
dus, familles et sociétés de 12e année ainsi qu’une bourse de 500$ du Club Richelieu pour sa fierté de la langue française. De son côté, Eugénie Tessier s’est démar- quée par son engagement dans les activités scolaires et parascolaires en décrochant le titre de Grand Méritas lors du Gala du Méri- te. Ce prix était accompagné d’une bourse de 750$ présentée par Tim Hortons. À noter que 54 finissants ont obtenu le certificat de mérite scolaire de l’Ontario (moyenne de 80% et plus). De plus, l’école a remis une soixantaine de bourses à des élèves qui se sont démarqués dans leurs cours.

ARTour, a regional organization dedicat- ed to promoting artists and the arts in the Prescott-Russell region, announced its 2013 Young Artists Scholarships recipients. Kia Kortelainen of Rockland District High School, Shawn Duval of l’école secondaire publique Le Sommet, and Mylène Couture Upper Canada schools broaden Internet presence BROCKVILLE | The Upper Canada school district is increasing its presence on the Information Superhighway. The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has signed a collaborative agree- ment with the Eastern Ontario Network (EON). Together the two entities will pro- mote and share Upper Canada district school news, events and information through UCTV, the board’s own exclu- sive online video streaming channel, and through EasternOntarioTV.com, the EON streaming channel. EON staff will help the UCDSB commu- nications and relationship management department staff to produce both live and recorded broadcasts for UCTV, and also work with staff at district schools, along with students in the Grades 5 to 12 levels, on a curriculum that will teach students the skills involved in producing live and record- ed broadcasts. The goal is to create student-focused shows on sports, school life, student poli- tics, arts and other topics of interest to the overall school community. Some students with interests in online journalism and pho- tography may have a chance to produce feature content for EON’s news and infor- mation site at EasternOntarioNetwork.com. 20 ans de succès Le comité organisateur du Tournoi de golf de la Fondation Roger-Séguin est dans les bonnes grâces de Dame Na- ture. En effet, le soleil était au rendez- vous pour cette 20e édition le 21 juin dernier, première journée d’été.
Avec la contribution des commandi- taires et donateurs ainsi que les divers ti- rages et recettes de l’encan silencieux, le comité organisateur a remis un chèque de 37 000$ à la Fondation Roger Séguin. Même si on n’a pas fracassé le record de l’an passé (40 000$), les membres étaient très heureux de pouvoir remettre cette somme à la Fondation Roger-Sé- guin en cette année de réduction bud- gétaire. Au cours des trois dernières an- nées, le tournoi a permis d’amasser près de 110 000$, soit le tiers du montant cu- mulé des années précédentes. Le tournoi de golf est la principale activité de cueillette de fonds de la Fon- dation Roger-Séguin. Les fonds amassés contribueront à l’achat de biens maté- riels pouvant contribuer à l’amélioration des services offerts aux résidents du Centre d’accueil Roger-Séguin. Monique Cheff prend la relève de Da- niel Quinn à titre de présidente du co- mité organisateur. Elle lance l’invitation à tous pour la 21e édition, qui aura lieu le 20 juin.
