With the June 2 provincial election voting day less than a week away, one of the six candidates vying the for the GPR seat is worried about how the advance poll setup for Russell Township might affect the final voter turnout. “Something seems strange,” said Amanda Simard, the incumbent Liberal MPP, during a phone interview. Simard referred to the advance poll site for voters in Russell Township and also for those in nearby communities like the Village PG-JNPHFTJO5IF/BUJPO.VOJDJQBMJUZ BOE also the Village of Vars. In the last provincial election and others before then, the advance QPMMTJUFIBTBMXBZTCFFOJO&NCSVO5IJT year it is in Marionville at the village com- munity centre. The village is part of Russell Township, but it sits on the borders of the township, /PSUI%VOEBT5PXOTIJQJO%VOEBT$PVOUZ and the City of Ottawa’s eastern rural area. Simard fears that the distance to drive to Marionville for the advance polls may deter some people from voting this year if they are not able to access the online poll on June 2 voting day. She cited seniors and others who may not have their own vehicle or access to public transit as among those who may not be able to vote this year if they cannot get to the advance poll. “It’s 20 minutes travel time,” Simard said, regarding the Marionville advance poll location. “That’s a lot, especially with the price of gas.” She also expressed concern that any voters who did go to Marionville might be confused about the site for the advance poll since the village spans three municipalities.

Le débat en français des candidats aux élections provinciales dans la circonscription Glengarry-Prescott- Russell a permis de mettre en lumière les contrastes entre les trois candidats. Victor Brassard Le candidat du nouveau parti bleu Victor Brassard s’est présenté comme la seule alternative à la politique traditionnelle en lançant un appel à tous ceux et celles qui se sentent oubliés par le système. Monsieur Brassard s’est aussi prononcé plusieurs fois contre les dépenses gou- vernementales, s’opposant notamment à la reprise du contrôle de la route 174 par le gouvernement provincial ou encore aux investissements dans le développement de technologies agricoles plus vertes, qu’il a qualifiées de « dépenses inutiles ». Pour Monsieur Brassard, les problèmes économiques sont causés par des élites politiques déconnectées des préoccupations populaires et du monde rural. Le candidat du nouveau parti bleu s’est également opposé aux obligations vaccinales et aux restrictions sanitaires, affirmant que celles-ci briment les libertés individuelles : « Je suis contre les obligations et les restrictions, parce que je pense que ça enlève de la qualité de vie. On est sage. On est capables de suivre des règles à l’intérieur de nous. Chaque personne ici a la responsabilité de gérer sa vie, sa famille, sa communauté et le monde autour d’eux. La qualité de la vie est développée dans une communauté qui parle ensemble, qui agit ensemble, et qui marche ensemble, sans crainte, mais avec la liberté. » Thaila Riden Le candidat du parti vert Thaila Riden a eu de la difficulté à s’exprimer en français, mais son effort n’est pas passé inaperçu alors que le candidat progressiste-conservateur et la candidate néo-démocrate ne s’étaient même pas présentés au débat. Pour Monsieur Riden, la priorité du gouver- nement devrait être d’investir dans la tran- sition vers une économie plus verte. Selon le candidat du parti vert, le gouvernement devrait investir dans les petites entreprises, notamment dans le domaine de l’agriculture, en favorisant les exploitations familiales et en limitant l’expansion des entreprises agricoles industrielles. C’est en ce sens que le parti vert s’engage à faciliter l’accès à la terre pour la rendre plus abordable et à protéger les récoltes afin de garantir un revenu aux agriculteurs. Monsieur Riden a également souligné l’importance d’investir dans les systèmes de santé et d’éducation, qui ont été grandement éprouvés durant la pandémie. Il souhaite voir une augmentation du salaire des préposés aux bénéficiaires et s’engage à investir dans les soins à domicile, tout en s’opposant à la privatisation des centres de soins de longue durée. Monsieur Riden s’est aussi opposé à l’agrandissement de la route 174, en insis- tant sur l’importance de trouver d’autres alternatives plus écologiques, comme le transport en commun. Un autre citoyen a fait un lien entre l’ab- sence de Monsieur Sarrazin cette année et l’absence de Madame Simard lors du débat de 2018, alors qu’elle était candidate pour le parti progressiste-conservateur : « Moi aussi je veux féliciter les candidats de s’être présentés ce soir. Il semble y avoir un patron, parce qu’en 2018 le candidat progressiste- conservateur était aussi absent. » Un autre citoyen a posé la question suivante aux candidats sur Facebook : « Que vous inspire l’absence ce soir des conservateurs dans le contexte des coupes de 2018 ? » Madame Simard a d’abord dénoncé ce qu’elle qualifie de trahison du gouvernement Ford envers les francophones avant de dénoncer le manque de courage de son rival progressiste-conservateur : « Le candidat conservateur aime beaucoup parler dans les médias et attaquer les autres virtuellement, m’attaquer personnellement surtout, mais il n’est même pas capable de venir le faire ici ce soir. » Monsieur Brassard s’est présenté comme l’authentique candidat conservateur en l’absence de Monsieur Sarrazin : « Le vrai conservateur est ici! Je ne suis pas parti avec Ford pour une raison : je ne veux pas être avec Ford. Je suis le vrai conservateur. ». Pour sa part, Monsieur Riden a insisté sur l’importance de débattre en démocratie : « La participation dans notre démocratie c’est très important. Be careful to avoid the risk of Lyme disease from wood ticks now that the warm weather is here. Residents need to follow some steps to avoid tick bites when working in their gardens or going hiking in the woods. The black-legged tick may carry Lyme disease. People can reduce the risk of ticks around the house with a thorough yard clean-up, that includes any garden areas. Prune trees to allow sunlight through because ticks prefer shady areas. Get rid of all fallen leaves, tall brush and weeds along stone walls and wood piles. Create a gravel or wood chip border about a metre wide to separate the yard from wooded areas or brush. Set up playground equipment, including swings and sandboxes, on an elevated wood or mulch platform away from the woods. 8IFOPVUEPPSTVTFBOJOTFDUSFQFMMFOU DPOUBJOJOH%&&5BOE*DBSJEJOPODMPUIJOHBOE FYQPTFETLJO8FBSMJHIUDPMPVSFEDMPUIJOH that will make it easier to see any ticks that attach themselves. Il faut voir à ce que les moustiquaires des portes et des fenêtres sont intactes et ne présentent aucun trou permettant aux moustiques d’entrer dans la maison. Tondre les pelouses pour que l’herbe soit
courte et ne puisse pas constituer un lieu de reproduction potentiel après les averses EFQMVJF&UWFJMMFSÆDFRVFMFTHPVUUJÍSFTFU les drains du toit soient exempts de débris pour permettre à l’eau de pluie de s’écouler. Le bureau de santé conseille de garder les bacs à compost couverts pour empêcher les moustiques de les utiliser comme gîtes larvaires. Toute personne ayant un fossé de drainage près de sa maison devrait se procurer un larvicide approuvé dans une quincaillerie ou un magasin de jardinage pour le mettre dans l’eau. Ces larvicides contiennent une bactérie qui tue les larves de moustiques sans nuire aux autres insectes, animaux ou plantes. Toute personne qui va camper sous une tente doit s’assurer d’avoir une bonne moustiquaire. The team that wins this tournament qualifies for the OFSSAA tournament, which regroups the best teams in Ontario. The Ravens qualified for the semi finals of the tournament with a 5-0 against Rideau High School and a 4-2 loss against Notre- Dame High School in the qualifiers. The results of the semi-finals are unavailable at press time.
The Saint-Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School girls’ soccer team won the Prescott-Russell high school league in a 4-1 blowout against Le Sommet to qualify for EOSSAA. “They are ecstatic and I’m so happy as well” says the team’s coach, Francis Kwok. The Ravens had previously qualified for the tournament in 2019 but the tournament was cancelled because of COVID-19. The Ravens had a dominant season, scoring 35 goals

C’est avec tristesse que nous vous annonçons le décès de madame Lina (née Ouimet) Adam, décédée le 15 mai 2022, à l’âge de 88 ans. Elle était l’épouse bien-aimée de Hervé Adam (65 ans de mariage) et la fille de feu Donat Ouimet et de feu Eva Legault. Outre son époux, elle laisse dans le deuil ses enfants : Jean-Pierre (Carole Lacombe), Jocelyne, Mario (Chantal Genier), et Christian (Pauline Rozon); ses petits-enfants : Mathieu et Patrick; aussi, Joël (Stéphanie Bisson), Stéphanie (Michel Ayotte) et Macha (Robin Mainville) ainsi que trois arrière- petits-enfants : Adrien, Edouard et Henri. Elle laisse également ses sœurs : Rita (feu Robert Gibeault), Rollande (feu Fernand Bourgeois), Lucille (Rhéal Demers), Lise (feu Fernand Lafrance) et Jeannine (feu Gilles Racine) et son beau-frère Claude (Joanne Richer) ainsi que plusieurs nièces et neveux. Prédécédée par son frère, Albert (feu Madeleine Laflèche) et sa sœur, Alice (feu Euclide Lafrance). On aimerait remercier le manoir Laurier et le foyer St-Jacques d’Embrun, pour leur bon service lors du séjour de Lina. Une messe funéraire privée a été célébrée dans l’église Saint-Albert.
