Three fire departments responded to a Tuesday morning call about a house fire in East Hawkesbury Township. Just after 8 a.m., March 2, a call was re- ceived about a house fire at 3420 Greenlane 3PBEJO&BTU)BXLFTCVSZ5PXOTIJQ'JSFàHI - ters from the township fire department were KPJOFECZUIFJSDPVOUFSQBSUTJO7BOLMFFL)JMM and L’Orignal to try and extinguish a fire in a two-storey house during sub-zero weather conditions. “The wind wasn’t helping us at all,” said #SZDF-VLFS &BTU)BXLFTCVSZ5PXOTIJQàSF chief, during a later interview. “The wind was driving the fire.” Morning temperatures that day varied from minus 20 to minus 27 or lower, with the wind chill factor added. The damage to the house was so severe that a backhoe was brought in later to demolish the remaining structure. Lors des opérations des pompiers, la découverte d’un corps d’une personne ayant péri dans ce sinistre a été faite à l›intérieur d›un des appartements. L›identité de la personne n›a pas encore été révélée par le coroner à l›heure de la publication. Un tech- nicien en sécurité incendie a été dépéché sur les lieux pour analyser le contexte de l›incident et ses causes. Étant donné qu›il y a eu une mort dans cet incendie, l›enquête a été confiée par la Sûreté du Québec au Service des enquêtes sur les crimes majeurs. L›incendie a eu lieu sur la route 148 au coin de la rue des )JSPOEFMMFTEBOTMFTFDUFVS1PJOUFBV$IËOF de Grenville-sur-la-Rouge. L’édifice rasé par les flammes était l’ancien hôtel Gascon.
Les appartements incendiés sont une perte totale, l’identité de la personne décédée n’a pas été révélée. Il ne reste plus qu›un amas de décombres de l›immeuble à logements qui a pris feu vendredi 5 mars dernier à Grenville-sur-la- Rouge. L›incendie a été déclaré à 10h du matin. Le service d’incendie est arrivé pour combattre un feu généralisé et l’a combattu jusqu’à 13h avant de le déclarer maitrisé. Des ouvriers ont ensuite démoli les ruines de l’immeuble à l’aide d’une pelle mécanique. Ce dernier étant une perte totale suite au brasier.

Lundi matin, un incendie a fait six sans- abri à Hawkesbury. Les services d’incendie de Hawkesbury et de L’Orignal ont tous deux répondu à un appel concernant un incendie de maison sur la rue Sinclair à Hawkesbury. L’immeuble était un triplex de deux étages qui abritait six personnes. L’appel initial a été reçu à 2h35 du matin. Le chef des pompiers, Daniel Gascon, a déclaré que le toit «était entièrement impli- qué» avec des flammes visibles pour les pompiers lorsque le premier camion-pompe est arrivé. Les six personnes sont sorties du bâti- ment, mais un petit chien appartenant à une femme vivant dans l’une des suites est mort dans l’incendie. Le chef Gascon a rapporté que le propriétaire du triplex, qui vivait dans l’une des suites, a alerté le couple vivant à l’étage du danger mais qu’ils n’ont pas pu sortir car l’entrée du deuxième étage était bloquée. Le propriétaire a alors installé une échelle à l’extérieur de l’avant du bâtiment et le couple a pu sortir par une fenêtre du deuxième étage. Les pompiers ont lutté contre l’incen- die pendant les premières heures de la matinée et ont maîtrisé la situation vers 11h20. L’enquête sur le site a déterminé
que l’incendie avait débuté sur un balcon extérieur du deuxième étage puis s’était propagé au toit, et on soupçonne que des «matériaux de fumée jetés» sont à l’origine de l’incendie. Le chef Gascon a demandé à tous les propriétaires de s’assurer que leurs détec- teurs de fumée sont en état de marche et de s’assurer qu’il y a une voie d’évacuation ouverte en cas d’incendie. A final solution may be in sight for the illegal trash pile problem near the Village of St-Eugène in East Hawkesbury Township. Council listened with interest during its February 22 session to a proposal from Hadi Shamlah about a project that could see both the disappearance of an unsightly illegal dump site on County Road 14 and the addition of a new commercial enterprise to the township’s economic development profile. “I think you have a very interesting pro- ject,” said Councillor Simon Rozon, adding that he would like Shamlah to make a more detailed on-site presentation to council at a later date. Shamlah represents a Québec-based group that is interested in acquiring the 20- BDSFQSPQFSUZPOUIFPVUTLJSUTPG4U&VHÍOF The property used to belong to Sayed Abdullah Ahman, a Toronto developer, but was seized by the township for non-payment of property taxes. Ahman was partners with François Charlebois, a local developer, on a proposed recycling business for the site. Charlebois began collecting mounds of trash, including construction debris, plastic barrels and other items, on the site but the recycling business never went ahead. Charlebois had failed to get the necessary provincial approval for his project and the .JOJTUSZPG&OWJSPONFOU .P& JTTVFEB stop-work order on his trash collection. The ministry has also ordered Charlebois to clean up the site but taken no action yet to force him to do so. Shamlah’s group proposes a two-stage development for the site. First stage is crea- tion of a commercial greenhouse operation to provide working capital. He estimated the development cost for that at about $800,000 and noted that the group already has secured half of the money needed and will be looking into government funding aid for the remainder. The second stage for the project involves either building a small manufacturing facility on the property or the group might look at either leasing or buying other existing buildings in the municipality for use as a warehouse and manufacturing site for recycled-plastic building materials. Shamlah noted some reforestation work

TOWNSHIP CONSIDERS FUTURE STRATEGIES IN WORKSHOP

Attracting new businesses and boost- ing name recognition were among the priorities Champlain Township staff and councillors chose during a strategic plan workshop last week. Promotion and awareness, business and retail attraction, infrastructure improve- ments, a recreation review and advocacy for township-wide broadband were among key areas the council identified at the meeting with consultants MDB Insight on Tuesday. The suggestions, while non-binding, were designed to provide the consultants with areas to further the township’s strategic plan later this year. The township contracted MBD Insight to develop a corporate and economic develop- NFOUQMBOJO/PWFNCFSMBTUZFBS . According to the township’s website, Champlain did not yet have a strategic plan, which would provide a “long-term plan for attracting new jobs, retain business, and foster economic growth”. Such a plan was also required to help secure grants and external funding. KIA change son logo et son nom

Kia redéfinit son image cette année en présentant un nouveau logo plus moderne. Du coup, Kia a supprimé la mention « Motors » dans sa dénomination sociale pour démontrer que la société désire s’impliquer davantage dans différents secteurs d’activité, comme les véhicules électriques, l’énergie propre et les matériaux recyclables. En plus de ce repositionnement d’entreprise, Kia présente le tout nouveau Seltos et la nouvelle K5 en remplacement de l’Optima. Qui plus est, Kia dévoile la quatrième génération du Sorento et se prépare à introduire la troisième génération nord- américaine de la Sedona. Le Sorento est construit sur la nouvelle plateforme N3, qui se distingue par sa légèreté et sa rigidité. Par rapport au modèle sortant, la conduite du nouveau Sorento s’avère plus dynamique, tandis que l’espace intérieur et les capacités hors route ont été accrus. Deux moteurs classiques sont offerts, soit un 4 cylindres de 2,5 litres (191 ch) et un 4 cylindres turbo de 2,5 litres (281 ch). Il existe également des motorisations hybride et hybride rechargeable. La première combine un 4 cylindres turbo de 1,6 litre à un moteur électrique (59 ch) et une batterie de 1,5 kW, et la deuxième est constituée du même moteur à essence auquel les ingénieurs ont jumelé un moteur électrique (90 ch) et une batterie de 13,8 kWh. De son côté, la berline K5 affiche un style plus raffiné que celui de la défunte Optima. De même, la tenue de route et le confort lui sont supérieurs. Deux moteurs sont proposés : un 4 cylindres turbo de 1,6 litre (180 ch) et un 4 cylindres turbo de 2,5 litres (290 ch). La traction intégrale est optionnelle. Quant au Seltos, il s’agit d’un VUS sous- compact dont le look s’inspire de celui de son grand frère Telluride. Deux moteurs sont au menu : un 4 cylindres de 2,0 litres (145 ch) et un 4 cylindres turbo de 1,6 litre (175 ch). Le rouage intégral est équipé d’un différentiel à verrouillage central pour améliorer la traction sur les surfaces glissantes.

SUBARU dévoile une nouvelle BRZ

Plusieurs rumeurs circulaient à propos de l’avenir de la BRZ. Le coupé sport de Suba- ru allait-il avoir une descendance? Or, les amateurs de voitures sportives peuvent se rassurer, puisque la deuxième généra- tion de la BRZ arrive en tant que mo- dèle 2022. Par ailleurs, les autres modèles Subaru font cette année l’objet de quelques changements ici et là. Les plus importants s’appliquent au Crosstrek, qui reçoit des retouches esthétiques et un plus gros mo- teur. Fidèle au modèle original, la nouvelle BRZ demeure une voiture à propulsion (roues arrière motrices) avec un centre de gravité ultrabas. Cette conception tranche avec les autres modèles Subaru, lesquels se distinguent par un rouage intégral symé- trique à prise constante et une garde au sol surélevée. Cette deuxième génération étrenne un châssis plus rigide et un nou- veau moteur plus puissant de 2,4 litres à opposition horizontale de 228 chevaux dont la ligne rouge passe à 7000 tr/min. Deux choix de transmissions sont au menu : une boîte manuelle à six vitesses ou une boîte automatique à six rapports avec un mode sport. À l’intérieur, on trouve un nouveau tableau de bord numérique et un écran tactile d’infodivertissement de 8 pouces. Le Crosstrek étrenne cette année des roues, une calandre et un pare-chocs avant redessinés. Les versions Sport et Limited ouvrent leur capot à un nouveau 4 cylindres de 2,5 litres qui produit 182 chevaux et 176 livres-pieds de couple. Le moteur des autres variantes demeure le 4 cylindres de 2,0 litres et 152 chevaux. Par ailleurs, la déclinaison Sport est la seule qui est pourvue du dispositif X-Mode amélioré à double fonction avec para- mètres sélectionnables (neige, boue et sentier) qui optimise la motricité sur les surfaces glissantes. Parmi les autres changements, notons que les modèles Ascent, Forester, Legacy et Outback reçoivent des phares direction- nels à DEL de série.

NO SEASON FOR COUGARS AS NCJHL ABANDONS PLANS

The National Capital Junior Hockey League (NCJHL) has called it quits on trying to host a season during under COVID-19 restrictions. Late last month, the league, which in- cludes the Vankleek Hill Cougars and the Saint-Isidore Eagles, confirmed that there would not be a regular season in any form. In a statement, the NCJHL said the best-case scenario under the post-lockdown restric- tions was a modified scrimmage against a single partner team for the remainder of the season. “With the uncertainty of this continuing until the end of March in case there is an- other shutdown, the high cost to operate such a bubble and the safety concerns for players and coaches, it was felt that this was the proper way to go,” the statement read. “Some teams may continue to hold weekly try out get togethers within their own group.” In December, teams in the NCJHL had tentatively agreed to start the regular season on January 8. The shortened season would have featured 18 games, followed by playoffs in late March or early April. But the Ontario government’s lockdown in late December, followed by a new state of emergency and stay at home order in January, meant arenas were closed and teams were unable to meet, even for training sessions.
