Pressure Sensitive Labels Dominate W hile pressure-sensitive labels face competition today from other labelling and packaging options, in 2016 it still achieved growth of 3.9 percent over prior year — greater growth than that of the label market as a whole — and still commands a massive market share of 40 percent, according to a new report fromAWA Alexander Watson.

Liquid Paperboard Packaging Surges There will be steady increases in demand for paperboard materials for liquid products over the next five years, according to the latest in- dustry study from Smithers Pira. Production of liquid packaging board (LPB) and food/cupstock (FCS) boards combined surpassed the 7.7 million ton mark in 2015, ac- cording to The Future of Liquid Pa- perboard to 2022 . This has grown by over 3 percent annually on aver- age since 2012. Reaching 8 million tons in 2016, this segment of the packaging market was worth $9.5 billion to the paper mills. According to the study, through to 2022, demand for LPB will acceler- ate at 4.5 percent per year, driving a total market value of $4.69 billion in 2017 to reach $5.83 billion in 2022. Production of liquid paperboard materials is highly concentrated, ac- cording to the report, especially liq- uid packaging board, which is produced in only 10 countr ies around the world. Consumption of converted board products is spread

Global Pressure Sensitive Label Market By Region

As the report documents, Asia is now the leading region for pressure-sensitive label demand, eclipsing the developed mar- kets of Europe and North America, and is the format’s largest end-use market segment, globally, taking 27 percent of 2016 volumes, is food labelling — mostly for primary product labels. “Variable information print (VIP) labels are a strong growth area for the versatile pressure-sensitive label, in line with the increasing requirements of today’s transportation and logistics activities, in terms not only of track-and-trace and stock and in- ventory management, but also for product authentication — for example, RFID-enabled labels,” said AWA Alexander Watson Associates President and CEO, Corey M Reardon. “What is (Cont’d on Page 4)

“While glue applied labels still enjoy substantial usage globally,” Reardon continued,“the new sleeving technologies now enjoy a significant market share and continue to grow, while in-mold labeling remains a niche but growing market. Direct-to-container digi- tal print is an area to watch, and flexible packaging has the capability to revolutionize the whole product packaging market. across all global regions; however, in contrast to some other packaging segments, three-quarters of all converted LPB is still used in the Americas and Eu- rope, with Asia holding only a 17 percent market share in 2016. Demand for liquid paperboard is heavily dependent on a few segments, although there is scope to ex- pand into new areas, said the study. In 2016, more than 70 percent of LPB consumption occurred in the dairy industry, with juice packaging accounting for a further 20 percent plus. “Consumption of dairy products has slowed in Western Europe,” said Stephen Harrod, author of the report,“but Eastern Europe has enjoyed rapid growth in demand, sustaining volume demand for liquid pa- perboard. Globally, however, the industry is seeing growing competition from ‘alt-milk’ products, such as nut-based ‘milks.’ However, these products may actu- ally stimulate demand for LPB, as they open up new niche markets. LPB consumption will be maintained over the medium term, assisted by the healthy eating trend, together with growing consumption patterns in the emerging markets.” In spite of increasing competition from other alter- native beverages, including ready-to-drink tea and coffee, energy drinks and the like — especially among younger consumers — demand for LPB in the dairy industry will see continued good growth, with nearly 440,000 tons of additional LPB materials need- ed to meet demand growth between 2017 and 2022. An overall trend across the packaging industry is to minimize the environmental impact of packaging, which is stimulating both technical innovations and new business models across the value chain. This in- terest includes consumers, brand owners, converters, and regulators and spans a number of different means to realize the goal of furthering the use of sus- tainable, recyclable, and compostable packaging into the mainstream. Marketing to more environmentally aware con- sumers will increasingly be an important differentia- tor for packaging supplier s and Fast Moving Consumer Goods brand owners in the future. Anti-Counterfeit Packaging Market Shows Huge Growth The global anti-counterfeit packaging market in pharmaceutical industry is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 21.36 percent during the period 2017-2021, according to a new re- port entitled Global Anti-counterfeit Packaging Market in Pharmaceutical Industry 2017-2021 . The global anti-counterfeit packaging in the phar- maceutical industry is growing because of increasing initiatives by the pharmaceutical companies. Many global pharmaceutical companies are collaborating with several associations and launching safety initia- tives for the safe use of drugs. Rising Prices According to the report, one driver in the market is rising online purchase of medicines. With a growing trend of online shopping globally, people tend to pur- chase medicines online as well. However, it was found that, in 2016, more than 55 percent of the medicines purchased online globally were either of poor quality or fake. Moreover, it is found that most of the online pharmacy websites do not entail any valid prescription for selling medi- cines. Thus, initiatives are taken to fight against coun- terfeiting over the Internet. The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP Global) is helping con- sumers to protect them from illegal online drug sell- er s by providing access to legitimate online pharmacies. Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is rising price of prescription-based drugs. Be- cause counterfeit drugs are less expensive, con- sumers may purchase inexpensive drugs from any pharmacist who may not be licensed.

Mirmar now has three Mark Andy P5 presses and two P7s, all with 438mm web width.

Over the ensuing years, Mirmar has invested in 11 Mark Andy presses, with a total of more than 80 print units. The latest batch of eight-color Performance Series presses began to be installed in 2013 when the P5 that was demonstrated on Mark Andy’s Labelexpo stand in Brussels, Belgium, was delivered direct to the plant near Valencia, Spain, after the expo closed. Coin- cidentally, it was the 250th Performance Series press to roll off the line at the Mark Andy headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri, a number that now exceeds 650 worldwide in the eight years since launching. The three P5s and two P7s now at Mirmar all have the 17-inch web width and are variously fitted with corona treaters, web turn bars, delam/relam, cold foil, screen print units, QCDC, and AVT 100 percent inspection. The specification and capability of the P-Series is al- lowing Mirmar to expand from its traditional base of food, household, and beverage labels, into the more niche areas of homecare and cosmetics, and other high quality sectors, like the wine industry, where added value is required, and margins are significantly better. This is changing the company’s substrate base from largely self-adhesive papers and thermals to PP and PE.
