UCPR officials think the company’s technology could solve growing concern about garbage disposal for Prescott-Russell municipalities. The UCPR has asked member municipalities to provide statistics on their total waste and recyclable materials tonnage and landfill tipping fees. Don’t even think about another munici- pal amalgamation plan is the message from Prescott-Russell to the provincial government. The mayors for all eight municipalities in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) gave unanimous support, August 28, for a resolution from McKellar Township to Premier Doug Ford, about any ideas he or other members of the Progressive Conserva- tive government may have about a repeat of the Harris government’s 1998 municipal amalgamation project. “The (Harris) Conservative government forced many municipalities to amalgamate on the guise they would become more ef- ficient, effective, save money, lower taxes, and ultimately reduce the provincial deficit,” stated the McKellar resolution. “There has never been a valid evidence-based study that supported these outcomes, and forced amalgamation actually accomplished just the opposite.” The 1998 amalgamation process resulted in the creation of Champlain Township, which includes the villages of Vankleek Hill BOE-0SJHOBMXJUI8FTU)BXLFTCVSZBOE Longueuil townships; Clarence Township merged with the Town of Rockland to cre- ate the City of Clarence-Rockland; and the combining of both Alfred Township and the 7JMMBHFPG"MGSFEXJUI/PSUI1MBOUBHFOFU5PXO - ship and the Village of Plantagenet formed

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were kept busy in the Rockland area, from August 26, through to September 1. On August 26, shortly before 5:30 p.m., Russell County OPP officers responded to a
complaint relating to a threat on Du Parc Avenue in Rockland. The investigation revealed that an altercation occurred between a man and two women. As a result, a 16-year-old boy from Rockland and a 16-year-old girl from Hawkesbury were both charged with
an officer conducted a traffic stop on Richelieu Street in Rockland, resulting in the arrest of 24-year- old Pembroke man. Christopher Peter Gagnon was charged with one count of operating a vehicle while impaired, with a blood-alcohol concentration of 80 plus and one count of

Marthe Lépine is working to get her name on the ballot as the Green Party’s candidate for Glengarry-Prescott- Russell (GPR) in the October federal election. “I want to make a contribution with all my experience,” said Lépine, 77, who lives in the Village of Russell in Russell Township. “I feel I have some knowledge that could be useful.” Lépine, is a self-employed translator with a bachelor’s degree and university back- ground studies in commerce and econom- ics. Le gouvernement Ford a récemment dévoilé son nouveau programme d’édu- cation sexuelle qui ressemble de près à celui du précédent gouvernement libéral sous Kathleen Wynn. Après leur victoire aux dernières élections de 2018, les progressistes-conservateurs avaient annulé le programme qui avait été mis en place en 2015 par les libéraux, afin de répondre aux attentes des groupes reli- gieux et de parents qui considéraient que plusieurs notions enseignées n’étaient pas adaptées à l’âge des enfants. Le ministre de l’Éducation, Stephen Lecce, a expliqué dans un communiqué de presse émis récemment que le nouveau programme d’enseignement « permettra d’assurer la sécurité des élèves, tant dans la salle de classe qu’en dehors de celle-ci ». Dans ce communiqué, concernant les élèves de la première à la 8 e année, le gouvernement Ford propose ce qui suit : abstinence, 7 e année, inchangé par rapport à l’ancien programme; sexe oral et anal, 7 e année, aucun changement; orientation sexuelle, 5 e année, contrairement à l’ancien programme qui proposait la notion option- nelle en 3 e année; identité de genre, 8 e année et non pas en 6 e comme le proposait le programme de 2015 des libéraux; harcè- lement en ligne, 4 e année : ce programme était abordé de façon obligatoire en 7 e année auparavant.

Anne Jutras, directrice générale de Centre Novas-CALACS francophone de Prescott-Russell, avait convié la presse, jeudi dernier, afin d’annoncer la venue prochaine de l’évènement. C’est le 18 septembre que l’évènement aura lieu, mais, cette année, c’est à Wen- dover que toutes et tous se donnent ren- dez-vous, au Centre communautaire Lucien Delorme, à 18 h. 3. DON’T INTERFERE Keep in mind that your grandchildren’s parents may not raise their little ones the same way you would. Let them ap- proach parenting in their own way and provide input only when asked. 4. BE A POSITIVE PRESENCE Children are sometimes more comfortable opening up to their grandparents than their parents, and it’s important that you make the effort to listen to them and take them seriously. This will lead them to feeling loved and cared for and help them develop their self-esteem. Finally, do your best to find fun activities you can take part in together. While spoi- ling grandchildren with presents and sweets tends to be a part of the grandparenting gig, the most meaning- ful thing you can do is dote on them with your time, attention and love.
When it comes to becoming a grandparent for the first time, there’s so- mething of a learning curve involved. Here are four tips to help you thrive in your new role. 1. BE AVAILABLE Though family dynamics differ greatly from household to household, the most important thing you can offer is to be available for your grandchildren. In some cases, all that will be requested is that you watch them from time to time. However, some parents need a little more help. 2. RESPECT PARENTAL RULES It’s important to talk to your grandchildren’s parents to establish ground rules as well as aspects of their routine that should be maintained when they spend time with you. • Get enough sleep. If you experience insomnia, there are ways to beat it. Go to bed and wake up at the same hour every morning, use your bed only for sleeping and avoid caffeine, alcohol and naps. Above all, try to laugh every day, even if you have to fake it at first. Laughing lowers stress levels, decreases your risk of heart disease and may improve your memory.
Every year since 1991, the United Nations has recognized October 1 as International Day of Older Persons. It’s an opportunity to both reflect on the impact our elders make on society and to raise awareness about the issues that affect them today. Increasingly, seniors are striving to live healthy lives in order to more fully enjoy their later years. Here are some tips to stay sharp physically and mentally, no matter how old you are. • Eat well. Choose nutrient-packed whole foods over those that are processed or refined. If you have trouble preparing meals, ask for help. There are many companies and organizations that can deliver meals to you. • Stay connected. Studies show that seniors with active social lives have a decreased risk for dementia. Spend time with family, friends and acquaintances. Pets are also great companions. • Take care of your body. Get plenty of exercise, don’t smoke and only drink in moderation. Mentally stimulating activities help keep your brain healthy and may stave off dementia. Take a class, read a book or take up a new hobby. • Learn something new.

a vite répliqué avec un but de Labelle. L’atta- quant de Rockland, Cameron Last, a lui aussi compté, aidé de Lafrance et Noah Doyle. L’attaquant des Junior Senators, Maxime Blanchard, a marqué en troisième période, aidé de Vincent Velocci et du capitaine Owen Cole. L’assistant-capitaine des Nats, Cole Craft, aidé de Labelle et Last, a sauvé son équipe en égalisant le pointage avec seulement trois minutes de la fin du match. C’est en supériorité numérique que les Nats ont remporté le match. Avec moins de deux minutes à faire en troisième période, Smith, aidé de Scrivens et du capitaine Vermaeten, a réussi à déjouer le gardien d’Ottawa. Les Juniors Senators ont tout de même réussi à marquer en fin de troisième, grâce à un but de Mark MacPhee, aidé de Brendan Bays et Zachary Gravel. Rockland remportait donc son deuxième match par la marque de 4-3. « Nous avons joué un match très serré, a souligné Sauvé. Nous avons certaine- ment eu des moments difficiles dans notre zone défensive et notre niveau d’énergie n’était pas du tout pareil. Malgré ce fait, notre jeu de puissance a été exécuté au bon moment, tard dans le match pour nous donner l’avance. Nous n’avons pas joué notre style de jeu typique et structuré, mais c’est encourageant d’avoir ces résultats malgré ce fait. »
Les deux premières parties des Nationals de Rockland se sont avérées fructueuses pour le club. Les joueurs de Dan Sauvé ont pris d’assaut la patinoire de l’aréna CIH pour la première fois cette saison, le 6 septembre dernier, devant 1100 partisans. Ils faisaient face aux Grads de Navan. Les Nats ont pris de l’avance sur leurs adversaires tôt en première période, à la suite d’un but par Simon Labelle, aidé de William Collins et David Lafrance. Plus tard, en fin de période, Mason Goldie, des Grads, a réussi à égaliser le pointage, assisté de Jean-Sylvain Boyer et Luke Paquette. Le pointage était encore 1-1 au début de la troisième période, aucune des deux équipes n’ayant réussi à marquer en deu- xième. Navan a pris le dessus dans les premières minutes de jeu, avec un but de Will Murray, sur une passe de Curtis Fabbro. Cinq minutes à peine se sont écoulées avant que le joueur de Rockland, Gunnar Smith, à son tour égalise le pointage, 2-2, aidé de Lafrance et de l’assistant-capitaine Cameron Scrivens. Rockland a remporté la première partie 4-3. « Nous avons très bien joué à domicile vendredi soir, disait l’entraineur des Nats, M. Sauvé. Nous aurions pu prendre une avance de plusieurs buts, mais le gardien de but de Navan a été excellent. Nous étions la meilleure équipe et nous avons trouvé une façon de revenir dans le match avec
un but vers la fin du match. Il y avait une grosse foule et ceci nous a donné beaucoup d’énergie. » Rencontre mouvementée contre les Ottawa Junior Senators Le lendemain, les Nats affrontaient les Ottawa Junior Senators au Complexe sportif Jim Durrell.
