@WorldPool
About World Pool Victoria Racing Club, Tabcorp and the Hong Kong Jockey Club are excited to announce that Black Caviar Lightning Race Day at Flemington will feature the first World Pool on an Australian thoroughbred meeting. The World Pool will see SuperTAB combine with the Hong Kong tote pools for all races on the February 18 Group 1 feature meeting. The World Pool will likely become the largest pool on Australian shores, providing punters with greater pricing stability and access to larger payouts through exotic bets. The World Pool amplifies Black Caviar Lightning Race Day further onto the global stage. The best sprint race in the world is now part of the World Pool at the same time as world racing converges on Flemington for the Asian Racing Conference. It’s a fantastic outcome for Australian racing and most importantly punters who will have the option of placing bets into super-sized pools. A world pool creates additional options for punters and gives racing at Flemington additional global exposure.
8
Here’s how it works Let’s take a look at Nature Strip’s win in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2022. His dominant win was reflected in the wagering by Australians on the champion sprinter, with the World Pool on the Ascot meeting delivering a return for punters they would not normally have received for a Nature Strip masterclass. Nature Strip accounted for some 60% of the S-TAB Win pool which would usually mean a payout of around $1.50 with that size of Win tote investment. However, due to the huge international liquidity created by the World Pool, the return to punters normalises. Nature Strip paid $3.25 on S-TAB and the World Pool, matching the fixed odds payout of $3.20 and international bookmakers paying between $3.30 and $3.25. The liquidity created by the global pool provides greater odds certainty and better value. Customers get a better return thanks to the size of the World Pool as it combines betting from several different countries. VRC on the global stage VRC Chairman Neil Wilson said the VRC was proud to bring all stakeholders together at Flemington Racecourse for an Australian-first. “The VRC continues to expand relationships with our global partners and we are delighted to host the nation’s first World Pool,” Mr Wilson said. “TAB is a major partner of the VRC and the Club has an important strategic alliance with the Hong Kong Jockey Club so it is an important milestone to be working together to significantly increase the global reach of racing via the World Pool. “It is fitting to have the World Pool feature on a day where Flemington hosts the Black Caviar Lightning, the world’s highest- rated Group 1 sprint and we look forward to increased engagement with those on and off course.”

PERFECT PARTNERSHIP BY TREVOR MARSHALLSEA
Much of Peter Moody’s and Luke Nolen’s success as a duo has come from good old-fashioned loyalty, trust and friendship. It was 20 years ago in May that Peter Moody made a great mistake. A year after moving his young family from Brisbane to build his Caulfield stable, the driven 33-year-old was told by Luke Currie that he couldn’t make the weights for two of his horses on one of those bush missions, earning Moody a reputation among bemused city trainers. Pondering alternatives, Moody remembered a fellow relocated Queenslander, Shaun Nolen. He asked Currie, “What about this Nolen bloke?” Currie said he was “going all right” and passed Moody a number. The trainer rang it, engaged the jockey, and a few days later cheered at the TV from Caulfield as Umagold won at Sale, and Sydney’s Quest came second.

14
A full three weeks later, Moody saw Shaun Nolen and thanked him. The jockey said, “What are you talking about? It wasn’t me, it was my brother”. Luke Nolen still remembers the moment with a laugh and, in fact, his ride on Umagold, on May 3, 2003. “We were midfield in an awkward spot, but we got a lovely run through and won convincingly,” he tells us. It’s a little like how a punter never forgets a success. What makes that memory more remarkable, though, is Nolen has ridden in the vicinity of 850 winners for Moody since, a stretch bringing seven Melbourne premierships – four for the trainer and three for the jockey – dozens of Group 1s, and one of the greatest turf stories ever told, Black Caviar. That was a sliding doors moment for my life. I guess a lot of lasting relationships have a unique story as to how they met and started off, and Pete and I have ours. ” “ “It’s amazing how the world turns,” Nolen says. “That was a sliding doors moment for my life. I guess a lot of lasting relationships have a unique story as to how they met and started off, and Pete and I have ours.” They also have one particular epic tale that will last centuries, though their union is about far more than the unbeaten champion who now has the Group 1 she won three times named in her honour, the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, which comes again on February 18. Moody and Nolen won their first Melbourne premierships in the 2009-10 season, in which Black Caviar won just the first five of her 25. Before her, there was another mighty mare, each man’s best horse up till then. “Typhoon Tracy, what a mare!” says Nolen, who partnered her in her four straight G1 wins of 09-10, and again in a fifth (her sixth overall), in her last start in the 2011 Orr Stakes. “To think – we were both saying how amazing it was to have a horse like her, then Black Caviar comes along.”

Nolen and Moody became household names through that turf phenomenon, who famously clung on to win at Royal Ascot in 2012. But of all the pair’s triumphs, the now 42-year- old jockey picks one that doesn’t involve the mare. There were other blokes with superior records … but Luke was the perfect jockey for me, because we just had a great relationship. “Derby Day, 2009,” Nolen says. “Pete and I won two Group 1s – the Myer with Typhoon Tracy and the Coolmore with Headway. To do that at Flemington on one of the pinnacle days of the calendar, that’s the highlight for me.” Old stats are elusive, but if Nolen and Moody haven’t passed the most widely reckoned-on wins record of George Moore and Tommy Smith, they surely must some time soon. What’s also astounding is the monolithic nature of their union. As they neared 850 winners – it stood at 849 after Saturday, February 11 – Nolen’s second-biggest stable haul was his 75 for the old Hayes, Hayes and Dabernig stable. ” “
16
Moody’s number two jockey was Linda Meech, with 293 wins. To that point of this season, Nolen had 31 winners, 25 of them for Moody. Those sorts of stats baffle the trainer, who merely counts his blessings that Nolen is considered “unfashionable” by others. Whether it was “Bairnsdale or Flemington”, Moody says, Nolen gets the job done, as well as being a “team player” unhesitant to suggest another jockey if he felt it was needed. “As a rider, I’d back Luke against anyone,” Moody wrote in his autobiography. “There were other blokes with superior records … but Luke was the perfect jockey for me, because we just had a great relationship.” Nolen, who confesses to “not selling myself well enough” to other stables, concurs. “Everyone’s pretty quick to jump off each other, both trainers and jockeys, but we’re just very loyal to each other,” Nolen says. “We’re probably a throwback to the old ways in that a little bit. We’ve been down a long dusty road together, and into a few dusty dry creek beds in between the good times, but we’ve weathered the storms together. “But we’ve still got some unfinished business. I didn’t think we’d ever get to 850 winners, but now that’s only 150 off a thousand. While there’s a goal and a hunger together, we’ll keep going.”

Pin & Win campaign raises $490k for Australian Childhood Foundation
The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) is proud to announce that more than $493,000 was raised for its Pin & Win partner, Australian Childhood Foundation, during the 2022 Melbourne Cup Carnival. Australian Childhood Foundation is a leading not-for-profit organisation supporting children to recover from the trauma of abuse and family violence. The Foundation provides specialist therapeutic support to children and young people to help them heal and feel safe, as well as educating and empowering communities to safeguard children. The funds raised through the VRC’s partnership will be invested into the Foundation’s National Trauma Recovery program and support up to 50 children with counselling and care. VRC Chief Executive Officer Steve Rosich said the Club was delighted to partner with Australian Childhood Foundation in 2022. “We are very proud to announce almost half a million dollars was raised in 2022 for Australian Childhood Foundation through the generosity of Flemington members, racegoers, VRC sponsors and partners, including Lexus Australia, and the community more broadly. We are grateful to everyone for supporting the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s Pin & Win initiative. “The Club also supported the foundation and its awareness through naming rights to races on Australian Guineas Day, Sofitel Girls’ Day Out and TAB Champions Stakes Day. We look forward to continuing this important partnership with the Foundation in 2023 to support their important work helping children. ” “ Australian Childhood Foundation CEO Dr Joe Tucci said the 2022 Pin & Win campaign was one of the Foundation’s most successful fundraising events in its 35-year history. “Supported by Pin & Win ambassadors such as Olivia Molly Rogers and Lorinska Merrington, the campaign also provided a unique platform for the Foundation to engage with parts of the community that otherwise may not know about our work. The face-to-face selling and engagement with racegoers along with ambassador and media opportunities provided a significant opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of prioritising the protection and recovery of children impacted by the trauma of abuse,” Mr Tucci said.

Pin & Win Ambassadors L-R: Rachel Watts, Olivia Molly Rogers, Lorinska Merrington & Stefan Dennis
Pin & Win offered more than $131,000 worth of prizes in 2022, including a Lexus NX 350h 2WD F Sport Hybrid. The 2023 partnership between the VRC and Australian Childhood Foundation will kick off with the Love Letter to Racing event hosted by Ross Stevenson on Black Caviar Lightning Race Day, Saturday 18 February, where all funds raised will go to the Foundation. The official Pin & Win campaign will commence later this year, with pins available online and at Flemington and a range of retail outlets. Pin & Win is the VRC’s flagship annual charity fundraiser and since 1995 has given charities the platform to raise more than $7.4 million through the sale of Lexus Melbourne Cup pins, helping to change lives and support the community. About Australian Childhood Foundation For 35 years, Australian Childhood Foundation has supported children and families through times of uncertainty. Founded by a small — but passionate — group of professionals and community advocates, Australian Childhood Foundation was established to ensure the safety and care of vulnerable children traumatised by abuse, neglect, and family violence. Today, as a national organisation the Foundation remains just as committed to ensuring all children feel loved and safe, providing specialist support for over to 1200 young Australians at any one time. 94% of children and young people in Australian Childhood Foundation care show a significant reduction in trauma symptoms within the first 12 months.
