Counterfeiting Fight Intensifies by Greg Kishbaugh

Flint Group Acquires Advanced Color Flint Group, as part of its strategy to grow in strategic market seg- ments, has acquired Advanced Color Systems, Inc. (ACS) located in Tu- alatin, Oregon. Advanced Color Sys- tems manufactures and distributes water-based inks in North America and also exports to some countries outside of North America. Advanced Color Systems, Inc. was established in 2000 by partners Tim Becker and Reed Fowler. Headquartered in Luxembourg, Flint Group employs approximately 6,800 people. Revenues for 2014 were $2.8 billion. Pro Mach Acquires EPI Labelers Pro Mach, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio, an integrated packaging solutions com- pany, has acquired EPI Labelers, New Freedom, Pennsylvania. EPI Labelers is a dedicated manufac- turer of labeling products for packag- ing and promotional needs, providing for a large contingent of consumer snack food and bakery brands.

S ustainability may still monopolize much of the discussion in the packaging markets but there remains one key issue that will continue to grow in importance:Anti-Counterfeiting. Counterfeit goods pose serious threats to consumer welfare as well as the brand loyalty of many CPG companies. The suc- cess of CPGs hinges on nothing greater than its ability to con- trol the quality of its products. It is very difficult to gain goodwill among consumers, and once that goodwill is jeopar-

dized it is even more daunt- ing a challenge to regain it. Several reports suggest that the packaging markets will continue to grow by enormous margins as CPGs and retailers struggle to bring this epidemic under control. The Anti-Counter- feit Packaging Market size is projected to grow from

$82.05 billion in 2015 to reach $153.95 billion by 2020, at an estimated Compound Annual Growth Rate of 13.41 percent, according to a new report from MarketsandMarkets. The Anti-Counterfeit Packaging Market is projected to wit- ness significant growth in the future with the increasing popu- larity of the benefits of authentication technologies and the need for track & trace technologies, which are embedded in packaging. Developing markets such as China, Brazil, and India are emerging as growth frontiers for anti-counterfeit packag- ing, according to the report. Growing economies, globalization, and reduced trade barriers act as the main drivers for in- creased opportunities in these nations. (Cont’d on Page 12)

Corrugated Market To Experience Growth

Therefore, the demand for environment friendly and easily recyclable packaging material is increas- ing, especially in the non-durable consumer goods segment. Europe has the highest paper recycling rate (78 percent), while the developing countries are also aiming toward lowering of carbon foot- prints. China is expected to increase its paper recy- cling rate up to more than 72 percent by the end of 2015. Governments in the developing market are also providing a helping hand to the corrugated packaging material suppliers. Merging Industry The corrugated packaging market has witnessed large numbers of mergers and acquisitions (M&A), in recent years. The falling profit margin, particularly for small players have led to market consolidation in the devel- oped markets of NorthAmerica and Europe. Another report, this one from Technavio, forecasts the global corrugated box packag- ing market to grow at a CAGR of 4.8 percent through 2020, primarily as a result of the growth of e-commerce. The growing e-commerce market, which pri- marily includes online shopping, has witnessed an increase in the demand for corrugated boxes for the shipment of products sold through them. The ease of online shopping has made many customers switch from the tradi- tional method of shopping. Online retailers use different types of corrugated boxes according to the product transported. These boxes ensure the safety of the products which are being transported. In addition, the effective packaging is becoming one of the key business require- ments in the e-commerce marketplace, thus fu- eling the growth of the market. E-Commerce Revolution “Global e-commerce experienced a growth of around 23 percent from 2013 to 2014,” said Sriram Mohan, a lead packaging indus- try research analyst at Technavio. “In 2013, around 4.2 billion consumers shopped on- line, which amounted to $1.5 trillion in rev- enue. In 2013, Asian and Pacific Coasts (APAC) was the largest market for B2C e- commerce reaching a global value of $563.7 billion and the market is expected to flour- ish at the same rate during the forecast peri- od. The other key leading regions for B2C e-commerce market are Europe, reaching a value of $483.2 billion and North America, reaching a value of $454.2 billion.”

The global corrugated packaging market was worth $150.1 billion in 2014, and it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.6 percent during 2015-2020, according to a new report from Research and Markets called Glob- al Corrugated Packaging Market Size, Share, Devel- opment, Growth and Demand Forecast to 2020 - Industry Insights by Application . The processed food corrugated packaging dominat- ed the global corrugated packaging market in 2014, with 25.4 percent market share. Both the consumer and regulatory bodies have raised their concern to- ward the environment and sustainability, since the growing number of landfills is becoming more chal- lenging for governments in the developed countries.

Green Packaging Demand Transforms Flexible Market The flexible packaging coatings market is set to witness robust growth due to the increasing need to enhance the shelf life of products in the North Amer- ican food and pharmaceutical industries, according to a new report from Frost & Sullivan. Packaging coatings for the food segment holds the largest mar- ket trailed by the pharmaceutical sector. The latter trails as a result of the stringent regulations and long duration taken for product launch, making pharma- ceuticals a less ventured sector. Rising consumer preference for lightweight products and the need to improve the quality of packaged contents are open- ing new avenues for market expansion of flexible packaging coatings, said the report. The report stated that the market earned revenues of $1.44 billion in 2014 and estimated this to reach $1.97 billion in 2021.The study covers heat seal coat- ings, cold seal coatings, barrier coatings, co-extrusion primers and functional additives. “Approximately 50 percent of the US population aged between 18 and 35 prefers to purchase prod- ucts with labels that declare them to be environment friendly,” said Frost & Sullivan Visionary Science Team Leader Nandhini Rajagopal. “As this section of the population is willing to pay a premium for products with recyclable packaging.” FTA Forum To Highlight Flexo, Digital Opportunities Flexographic Technical Association’s (FTA) upcom- ing 2016 Forum will explore how digital printing technologies are driving the flexographic industry into a new frontier in a technical session titled En- hancing Digital Print with Flexography . The pre- sentations have repor tedly been designed specifically for those who are looking for the best of both worlds—the speed, efficiency and repeatability of flexo, and the unique variability and flexibility of- fered by digital printing. The session, chaired by Andy Knapp, Flint Group Flexographic Products, and John Hickey, Domino Printing Sciences, will take place onTuesday, March 8. The session will feature Mike Gore, Discount La- bels, speaking about The Power Duo: How Digital Solutions Enhance a Flexographic Platform , and Sharon Zampogna, McCourt Label Co. giving the pre- sentation, Introducing New to the Old: How a 120- Year Old Flexo Company Embraced Digital . Warning Labels Market To Reach $10 Billion By 2020 A new report from Technavio’s predicts the global warning labels and stickers market to surpass rev- enues worth $10 billion by 2020, posting a moderate growth rate over the next four years. In this report, Technavio covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global warning labels and stickers market for 2016-2020. “The global warning label and stickers market has witnessed many innovative products in the past few years,” said Sharan Raj,Technavio’s lead market research analyst for tags and labels.Vendors are launching prod- ucts such as clear-on labels that provide a no-label look, used in packaging premium products. These stickers provide absolute transparency, high aging resistance, good adhesion, and clean label positioning.” The market is witnessing a growing popularity of labeling processes such as UV-curing hot melt to pro- vide removable stickers. The use of acrylate-based pressure sensitive adhesives for providing trouble- free labeling at exceptionally low temperatures is a growing trend in the market. The top four key drivers for the global warning la- bels and stickers market, according to Raj, are: • Increasing demand for packaged food and bever- ages from consumers worldwide is the primary driver for growth in the warning labels and stickers market. The soaring global population, along with rising con- sumer income levels, has boosted the demand for pack- aged food and beverages. • The manufacturing of warning labels and stickers requires skilled manpower and high-end machinery to develop labels with specific properties, which will require increased R&D spending by manufacturers. Vendors use advanced technologies in the selection and processing of raw materials, the design of the label and the final printing process. Top companies 3M spent $1.77 billion in R&D in 2014. • There has been a significant shift in the percep- tion of consumers and manufacturers about packag- ing in recent year s. Market trends suggest an increased level of attention paid by consumers on the design of packaging, colors, and ingredients used, safety measures, and related warning labels. From the consumer goods manufacturers’ point of view, labeling has become a major branding tool. In highly cluttered markets, creating shelf appeal and visi- bility has become the most important strategy for man- ufacturers. Manufacturers are thus focusing on proper labeling to create appropriate product awareness to at- tract consumers. This in turn is contributing to the growth of the global warning label and stickers market. • High demand for colored labeling will increase.

Track & trace technologies, in addition to being used in the packaging industry, are also adopted dur- ing the manufacturing process.Track & trace can also be used to better secure the supply chain by allow- ing manufacturers to locate the package at any point during the delivery process. The segment for track & trace technologies is forecast to grow at the highest CAGR over the course of the next five years. The coding & printing technologies segment has in the past dominated anti-counterfeiting efforts and is still projected to hold the largest market share. How- ever, globally manufacturers are showing an in- creased preference for RFID technology, which offers the dual benefit of tracking and identifying the prod- uct throughout the supply chain. Taking that into consideration, the RFID segment is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. As China and India become increasingly urbanized, with the accompanying rise in disposable income and an increased awareness of the importance of anti-coun- terfeit packaging, the growth of the Asia-Pacific anti- counterfeit packaging market is seemingly inevitable. Rapid industrialization and imposition of strict laws pertaining to secure packaging, according to the re- port, are also major factors contributing to the growth of the Anti-Counterfeit Packaging Market. Rotoflex, St. Louis, Missouri, has released Vericut3, the next generation of its off-line finishing solution for digital and conventional printed web. Rotof lex said the new Vericut3 is 100 percent servo-driven for precise tension control and flexibili- ty, from unwind to rewind and all print and die-cut units in between, including the matrix removal unit. Motorized roll lift, innovative URC 2.0 proprietary control system featuring the exclusive Report Man- agement System (RMS), and biometric log-in offer ad- vanced operation and control. In addition, the redesigned unit features what is said to be an effi- cient web path for reduced set-up waste, a motorized capstan, and optimized operating speeds. Reportedly, the new version has sophisticated mo- tion control technology and delivers high accuracy and precision for many off-line applications and processes. Design is said to reduce material waste through the automated die-cutter and f lexo unit setup and addresses inspection rewind requirements to maximize digital workflows, accommodate shorter runs, and reduce costs.
