Thinking Outside the Box to Drive Results Submitted by: Corban Nichols Vice President of Restaurant Excellence, Piada Italian Street Food

Objective

To promote genuine hospitality and increase Net Promoter Score (a measure of customer loyalty).

The Problem

One of Piada’s Core Values is Genuine Hospitality, but that wasn’t reflected in the Net Promoter Scores. We needed a way to engage our workforce, provide training content that is memorable and sticky, and

Short, TikTok-style training videos utilize “edutainment” (education + entertainment) for increased engagement among learners.

get everyone back on the same page for serving our guests better. Obstacles included limited time allocated to training, a need for consistency across multiple restaurants, and the challenge of effectively reaching and communicating with Gen Z employees.

How it Works

We worked with a vendor to develop a customized training program that utilizes short, TikTok-style training videos that are humorous as well as informative. We used characters, such as “Captain Obvious,” who could remind employees to practice good hygiene by saying outright, “brush your teeth, shower, use deodorant,” which relieves managers from having to relay that information personally to a team member who may need reminding. Because the videos are hokey and fun, the training content is more memorable, engaging, and sticky for learners.

Results

Piada’s Net Promoter Score (NPS) went up 25% in a short period of time, rocketing up over the previous year (2022) scores.

NRO Trainer Casting Call Submitted by: Shannon Ciccotelli, Senior Training Manager, Nado’s PERi PERi

Objective

To provide successful training for a new restaurant opening in a short period of time with limited resources.

How an interview emergency ultimately led to a stronger training team and a new standard practice for group interviewing at Nando’s.

The Problem We needed to build a strong team of 10 trainers for a New Restaurant Opening (NRO) in just one week.

We decided to hold a group interview session in order to evaluate candidates quickly. We identified the key skills candidates needed to be successful on the NRO training team, and designed a day that brought all candidates together to assess their skills in less than 6 hours. How it Works The day started with an icebreaker that showcased candidates’ attention to

detail and ability to multitask. Then, we moved on to a training “how-to” activity to bring out leadership, mentorship, teaching ability, and organization. We incorporated games to allow candidates to show a variety of character traits and identify their individual strengths.

Results

We found that star candidates clearly stood out from the rest, and once selected, went on to contribute to successful restaurant openings—we saw above-average scores by our third opening using this method. Even more telling, the employees identified through this hiring process achieved a 27% promotion rate within the first six months. We believe this interview process has helped us identify emerging leaders in our organization quickly, easily, reliably, and inexpensively.

Making Updates Easy Through Master Word Dcuments Submitted by: Crystina Bukrinski

Objective

Use of Master Documents in Microsoft Word simplifies and streamlines updates that affect more than one training document.

Create a solution to update multiple documents at one time to ensure that all training materials remain current, and to reduce the time involved in manual updates.

How it Works

Because a single policy update may affect many different training documents, in the past, I would have to manually update all documents individually, which was time-consuming and led to errors and missed updates. By using Microsft Word’s Master Documents feature, I was able to create a linked document system that allowed me to manage materials for multiple brands and positions from a central document. This system supports syncing in both directions, so any changes made to a single document are also replicated back to the master.

1. Collect your documents in a folder.

2. Start a new document, click “View” then “Outline.”

3. Insert each of your individual documents into this main document.

4. Now your documents are linked together, and changes will sync both ways between the individual and master documents.

Results

Though there was a large upfront investment in time to organize and properly link the documents, the end result is a huge increase in efficiency whenever an update is required. Additionally, I can now ensure that the most current version of the document is the one being used.

Making Your Training Memorable with Music Submitted by: Jack Woznick, Director of Training & Development, Toro, Toro, Toro, Inc.

Objective

Music taps into emotions, aids recall, and can even help learners develop strong new memories. Plus, it’s fun!

To add music to training programs to incorporate a fun element and to help make training stick.

How it Works

Music has a unique ability to tap into our memories and transport us back in time. Almost everyone has a song that triggers a particularly intense memory like your first kiss, learning to drive, a dear friend, a special event, a pivotal time in your life, or a heartbreak. Music has deep connection with your brain and the ability to impact mood, memory, and it can even relieve illness and pain.

Two recent studies found that music not only helps us retrieve stored memories, but it can help establish new ones as well. Listening to music activates areas of the brain associated with reasoning, speech, emotion, and reward, in addition to memory. We wanted to tap into the power of music and it’s potential to create strong memories and aid recall by using it in a really fun way with our training videos.

We used music clips that connected with the training topic, such as an ingredient in a recipe that we were teaching. For example, a music clip of the iconic Beatles song “Strawberry Fields” plays during the training video for how to make a strawberry cucumber cocktail.

Results

Incorporating music into our training programs has been rewarding. Music has increased team member engagement and improved knowledge retention, due to developing a stronger connection to the content through music.

Game On: Boosting Training Retention with Gamification Submitted by: Alex Govea, Sr. Manager, Ops Support & Communications, Del Taco

Objective

How it Works Create a game where trainees can use teamwork to compete against each other and practice their newly learned skills. As an example, let’s pretend our team members are going through training on how to make a new menu item—a pizza that requires 6 pepperonis to be placed in an “L” shape. Use a fun game to inspire competition and comaraderie, plus improved retention of training objectives. To incorporate immersive training experiences such as games to help team members learn objectives while having fun.

A training game based on this new menu item might go like this: 1. Divide learners into 2 teams of 3 people each. 2. Have them line up along a table or counter, with pizza-making supplies in front of them. 3. When the trainer says “Go” the first person from each team grabs a pizza crust (we practiced with tortillas) and 6 pepperonis and quickly puts them into the correct shape. 4. When the first person completes their task, the second person can start, and once they’re done, the third can start. 5. The first team to complete the task successfully wins!

Results You can offer a prize to the winning team, but just the excitement of winning and bragging rights are usually great motivators on their own. Training games can be free and don’t take a lot of time, but they can really skyrocket your employee engagement and retention of what they learned.
