The Lakes South Morang College respectfully acknowledges that beneath the significant River Red Gums that feature across our school's landscape lay the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri-Willam people of the Kulin Nation. The evening was a fitting way to celebrate the end of Semester 1, providing students with the opportunity to perform for family, friends and the wider school community. Events such as these play an important role in building confidence, developing performance skills and fostering a strong sense of belonging across our College. Thank you to our staff, families and community members for their continued support of the Performing Arts program. Most importantly, congratulations to every student who took to the stage and contributed to such an enjoyable and memorable evening. Our Semester 1 Whole School Performing Arts Showcase was a wonderful celebration of creativity, collaboration and student achievement across our P–12 College. Centred around the theme Bands and Groups, the evening showcased the musical and performance talents of students from both the Primary and Secondary Campuses. From classroom music performances to instrumental ensembles and dance items, students demonstrated the skills, confidence and dedication they had developed throughout the Semester. The showcase highlighted the importance of teamwork and shared artistic expression, with every performance reflecting the commitment and enthusiasm of our students.

PRIMARY REPORT MARCUS ABNEY-HASTINGS PRIMARY CAMPUS PRINCIPAL
I would like to warmly welcome all students, staff, and families back to Term 3. I hope everyone had a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable break and is feeling refreshed for another exciting Term of learning, growth, and opportunity. As we begin the new Term, it is also a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the many achievements and successes from Term 2 and look ahead to the exciting experiences that await our students over the coming weeks. Throughout last term, our students embraced a range of exciting learning opportunities and extracurricular experiences. A major highlight was our Bands and Groups Musical Performance in Week 10, where students from Prep–4 showcased their talents, confidence, and commitment after weeks of preparation. It was a fantastic celebration of creativity and performance, and we are incredibly proud of all students involved. Thank you to our teachers, students, and families for their support in ensuring every student had the opportunity to shine. Throughout the Term, our students also represented the school exceptionally well in a variety of sporting opportunities. From the determination shown at Cross Country to the teamwork and resilience displayed by our Year 3/4 Hoop Time Basketball teams, Boys Netball team, and Girls AFL Football team, students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and school pride. Academically, our Year 4, 5 and 6 students completed VIA testing, providing valuable insight into student growth and achievement and helping our teachers plan targeted learning opportunities to best support every learner. We were also excited to see our Year 5 students participate in Transition Week on the Secondary Campus, an important opportunity for students to begin preparing for the next stage of their educational journey while building confidence and independence. One of the areas we are particularly proud of is the positive feedback received through our 2026 Attitudes to School Survey. The data reflects the strong culture we continue to build together as a school community, with particularly strong growth in students feeling safe at school, school connectedness, and respectful relationships and behaviour. Towards the end of last Term, I had the privilege of meeting with several Prep families to discuss their child's transition into our College. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, while also providing valuable suggestions about how we can continue to better support new families joining our school community. As a College, we deeply value parent/carer voice and believe your feedback plays a vital role in strengthening the educational experiences we provide.

As we look ahead to a busy and productive Term 3, there is already plenty to be excited about. Students in Years 1–4 will participate in our upcoming Swimming Program, providing valuable opportunities to build confidence, safety awareness, and essential life skills in the water. Our Year 5 and 6 students will be heading off to camp, which is always a highly anticipated experience. We are also looking forward to celebrating Science Week, including our Science Week Open Morning for families in Week 6, where families will have the opportunity to join us and experience the wonderful inquiry learning and scientific thinking taking place across our school. Thank you for your continued support as we begin another exciting Term together. I look forward to seeing our students continue to learn, grow, and achieve throughout Term 3, and I thank our families and staff for the ongoing partnership that makes our school community so special.
Prep A: Clare Hallahan
Term 3 is an exciting and busy Term for our Prep students as we celebrate 100 Days of School and reflect on how much we have learned and grown. In Literacy, students will revise correct letter formation and continue applying their letter sound knowledge when reading and writing. Through our text based units, students will learn to discuss rich and engaging texts using full sentences and correct grammar. In Mathematics, students will learn addition and subtraction, compare and measure length, mass and capacity, and develop their understanding of sharing and grouping. Learning will continue to be explicit and engaging ensuring high levels of participation and academic progress. During Term 3, students will explore the topics of Living and Non-Living Things through engaging integrated literacy learning experiences. They will develop their understanding of the characteristics of living things and learn to classify objects based on their features. Students will participate in Dinosaur Day activities, using their knowledge to ask questions, share ideas and create informative work. In Mathematics, students will work on more complex addition and subtraction tasks, applying a range of strategies to solve problems. In Literacy, students will continue to build confidence as writers by creating longer and more detailed texts, using improved sentence structure, vocabulary and punctuation. In Term 3, Year 2 students will explore how things move through their Inquiry unit on forces, learning about pushes, pulls and gravity. This will be supported by an exciting and engaging “Toys in Motion” incursion, where students investigate how different toys move in action. In Mathematics, students will begin learning about multiplication and division through hands-on activities involving equal groups and sharing. In Literacy, students will enjoy a variety of engaging texts and begin to learn how to write persuasive pieces, sharing their opinions and giving reasons to support their ideas. This Term will build curiosity, confidence and key foundational skills. During Term 3, our Year 3 students will enjoy a range of engaging learning experiences across the curriculum. In Mathematics, they will build their understanding of multiplication, division, addition and subtraction, while exploring angles, time, and 3D objects. In Literacy, students will study Charlotte's Web to develop their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. Our Inquiry unit will focus on the three levels of government in Australia, with students learning about the roles of local, state, and federal governments and participating in an exciting incursion to bring their learning to life. During Term 3, students will engage in a range of rich learning experiences across the curriculum. In Literacy, they will develop their writing through information reports and persuasive texts while studying the class novel Storm Boy to strengthen comprehension and explore the history and culture of Indigenous Australians. This learning will be enriched through an excursion to the museum. In Mathematics, students will build confidence with multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals through engaging problem- solving and real-world applications. Term 3 is going to be an exciting and engaging Term full of new learning opportunities. In Mathematics, students will develop their understanding of angles, fractions, decimals, measurement, and location through a range of hands-on and problem-solving activities. In Literacy and Inquiry, we will be exploring the fascinating topic of Space. Students will build their research skills by investigating planets, stars, and other features of our universe. They will use the information they gather to plan and write detailed information reports, focusing on presenting facts clearly and accurately while developing their writing and communication skills. In Term 3, the 5/6 VIA class will continue building their skills, confidence, and independence across the curriculum. In Literacy, students will explore Indigenous Dreamtime stories through the ABC series Dust Echoes, developing their comprehension by analysing symbolism, themes, and film techniques used to communicate meaning. In Numeracy, they will strengthen their understanding of fractions, angles, decimals, measurement, and location through engaging hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks. This Term, Year 6 students will continue developing their Literacy and Numeracy skills through engaging and challenging learning experiences. In Literacy, students will study the novel Once by Morris Gleitzman while strengthening their comprehension, note-taking, summarising and writing skills. They will also learn how to use relative clauses and subordinating conjunctions to enhance their writing and will plan and publish an information report. In Mathematics, students will build their understanding of fractions, decimals, angles, measurement and location and transformation. Through problem-solving activities, students will develop confidence, fluency and mathematical reasoning skills while applying their learning to real world situations.

SECONDARY REPORT BONNIE LEE SECONDARY CAMPUS PRINCIPAL
To further strengthen student outcomes, we are continuing with our recent introduction of the CAT and SAC Redemption Program, held on Monday and Thursday afternoons. This initiative provides students with structured opportunities to revisit and improve their assessment tasks, ensuring that learning is ongoing and that students are supported to demonstrate their best possible achievement. Additionally, we are excited to launch a refreshed Learner Coach program in Term 3. Students will now rotate through a range of targeted sessions led by different teachers, focusing on key skill development areas such as study strategies, collaboration, communication and teamwork. These sessions are designed to be engaging, practical and, importantly, enjoyable—helping students build the capabilities they need to succeed both within and beyond the classroom. This Semester we welcome Mrs Conversano to our team as an Assistant Principal of Disability Inclusion. We also wish both Ms Pande and Ms Ylias the best of luck as they postpone their return to The Lakes this Semester, both extending their family leave. In light of these staffing changes we will see the continuation of additional Mathematics classes across Years 7-9 to address our goal of improving Numeracy across the College. Additionally, we will see further increases of shared classes this Term, creating opportunities for students to have access to different teaching and learning styles and to see communication, collaboration and organisation directly modelled to them through experiencing their teachers working together as teams to ensure learning outcomes remain our highest priority. As we move through this Term, we encourage our students to embrace the opportunities ahead with curiosity and determination.
As we begin Term 3, we find ourselves at a point of transition—moving out of the cold of winter and into the renewal and growth of spring. Much like the changing season, our Secondary Campus is entering a new phase of energy, opportunity and growth in learning, knowledge, confidence and character, while remaining grounded in strong values and high expectations for success. Term 3 brings with it a number of exciting learning opportunities and experiences for our students. New elective subjects and specialist class rotations are now underway, providing students with the chance to explore new interests, develop skills and challenge themselves in different ways. At the senior level, Unit 2 and Unit 4 studies have commenced, marking an important stage in our VCE journey, where commitment, organisation and persistence are key. Our co-curricular and wellbeing programs also continue to play an essential role in enriching student life. We look forward to the upcoming Wakakirri performances, where creativity, storytelling and teamwork will shine on stage. Our Year 7 students will celebrate their 100 Days of Learning, a wonderful milestone recognising the progress they have made as they settle into secondary school life. Meanwhile, our Year 9 students will participate in the City Experience, building independence and real-world connections beyond the classroom. We are also proud to support student wellbeing through programs such as the Year 8–10 Man Cave and Young Women’s Health and Wellbeing Days, which provide valuable opportunities for reflection, growth and open conversations around health, identity and relationships. Complementing this is our ongoing ICAN Mentoring Program, which continues to empower students through personalised support, goal setting and meaningful connections. A key focus this Term remains our unwavering commitment to high expectations for student success. We know that every student can achieve at high levels when supported with the right structures, opportunities and mindset.
We look forward to an inspiring and productive Term 3, filled with learning, connection and achievement.
YEAR 7
Term 3 is set to be an exciting and rewarding Term for our Year 7 students, with a range of opportunities to celebrate, connect and get involved in school life. A major highlight will be our 100 Days of Secondary School Celebration, where students will dress up, participate in fun activities and spend time with our Prep students, fostering connections across the school community while reflecting on how far they have come in their first year of secondary school. Students can also look forward to an exciting excursion, with further details to be announced soon, providing another opportunity to build friendships and celebrate their achievements. Throughout the Term, many students will have the chance to represent the school through interschool sport, demonstrating teamwork, resilience and school pride. We are also proud of the Year 7 students involved in this year’s Wakakirri performance, Roots Between Us, who have been working hard alongside students from across the school to prepare for their performance at the Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds. With so many exciting experiences on offer, Term 3 promises to be a fantastic opportunity for our Year 7 students to continue growing, learning and contributing to our school community. Term 3 promises to be an exciting and action-packed Term for our Year 9 students. A highlight of the Term will be participation in Interschool Sport, with students representing the school in Basketball competitions. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their teamwork, sportsmanship, resilience, and leadership skills while competing against other schools. The major event of the Term will be City Experience, an unforgettable program that takes students into the heart of Melbourne. Throughout the experience, students will participate in a wide range of engaging activities and adventures, exploring the city's culture, history, landmarks, and attractions. City Experience provides valuable opportunities for students to build independence, strengthen friendships, and create lasting memories through hands-on learning beyond the classroom. We look forward to a Term filled with learning, challenge, achievement, and plenty of fun as students embrace all that Term 3 has to offer. Term 3 is where the hard work pays off for VCE students at The Lakes South Morang College, marking a powerful shift toward deeper learning and greater responsibility. Year 11 students are mastering their chosen subjects and perfecting their study routines, while Year 12s channel their energy into final exam preparation. With tougher assessments and more complex topics on the horizon, both year levels are busy sharpening their critical thinking and exam strategies. However, life this Term isn't just about the classroom; sports like futsal and basketball, along with vibrant social events, keep the community connected and energised. By stepping up as leaders and role models, our senior students are actively shaping a positive school culture. Term 3 is ultimately a journey of consolidation—strengthening resilience, mastering time management, and preparing mind and body for the road ahead.

INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER!
Last Term, students in the Athlete Development Program had the privilege of hearing from Paralympian and world number one para-triathlete Jack Howell. Jack shared his inspiring journey, discussing his childhood, the challenges he has overcome, and the dedication that helped him reach the Paralympic Games in Paris. Students gained valuable insight into what life as a professional athlete looks like, including the commitment required in training, gym sessions, recovery, and daily life away from sport.
DRY FELTING PROJECT Our talented young artists in our Art Enrichment Program leapt right into their second session of their dry felting artworks, putting the finishing touches on their beautiful creations. It was amazing to watch their vibrant designs come to life.
COMMUNICATION THROUGH CONVERSATION The Communication Action Team is excited to launch The Lakes News, a new podcast for The Lakes South Morang College. With the theme “Communication through conversation,” the podcast will share student voice, school updates, interviews, events, achievements, and stories from across our college community.

What’s happening this term?
PRIMARY Prep students will celebrate reaching 100 Days of School with dress-ups, fun activities and time spent with our Year 7 students. Students in Years 1–4 will be heading to the pool to build confidence, improve their swimming skills and develop important water safety knowledge. Year 5 and 6 students are off on camp! Get ready for exciting outdoor adventures, team challenges, new friendships and unforgettable memories. Week 6 is all about discovering, creating and experimenting! Families are invited to our Science Open Morning on Tuesday 18 August from 9:10–10:00am to experience the fantastic science learning taking place across the Primary Campus. Dress up as your favourite book character for our Book Week Parade and Assembly on Monday 31 August at 9:15am in the Primary Gym. We can't wait to see everyone's creative costumes! The Book Fair will be held on the Primary Campus from 1–8 September. It's the perfect opportunity to discover a new favourite book while supporting our school library. Throughout the Term, students will participate in a range of exciting excursions, incursions and special learning experiences that bring classroom learning to life. SECONDARY Year 7 students will celebrate reaching 100 Days of Secondary School with dress-ups, fun activities and time spent with our Prep students. Year 9 students will head into Melbourne for the annual City Experience, exploring the city's history, culture and landmarks while building independence and creating lasting memories. Students involved in Wakakirri will continue rehearsing for Roots Between Us before performing at the Clocktower Centre later this Term. Students will have the opportunity to represent The Lakes in a range of interschool sporting competitions, demonstrating teamwork, resilience and school pride. Student Leadership Teams will be running exciting lunchtime Science Week activities throughout Week 6. Keep an eye on Compass and daily notices for the full schedule. Students and staff are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character on Monday 31 August. Book Week activities will also take place during recess. Need help with homework or a quiet place to work? Homework Club is held every Thursday at recess in the Library for Year 7–9 students. Everyone is welcome. Redemption sessions are held every Monday and Thursday after school from 3:15–4:15pm. Students should regularly check Compass to see whether they have been timetabled to attend.

Dear Families,
A warm welcome back to Term 3! I hope everyone had the chance to enjoy the quieter pace of the winter holidays, whether that meant time to unwind, outdoor adventures, cosy days at home, or simply spending time with family and friends. Term 3 is often one of our busiest Terms, with plenty of learning experiences, school events and opportunities for students to get involved. This Term our parent/carer volunteers will once again be busy preparing for the Father's Day Stall on Wednesday 2 September and Father's Day Breakfast on Friday 4 September. The Father's Day Stall allows students to choose a gift for the dads, grandfathers and father figures who support, encourage and cheer them on each day. We are grateful to the families who support the Stall and especially to our wonderful parent/carer volunteers, whose time and dedication help make it such a success year after year. The Father's Day Breakfast, the OG of our family breakfasts, returns on Friday 4 September. This traditional event is a chance to celebrate the important father figures in our students' lives while bringing our school community together. There is always a fantastic atmosphere as families gather, connect and enjoy a relaxed start to the day. Our staff and principals will once again be taking charge of the BBQ, serving up their famous egg and bacon rolls and we are also excited to welcome back OMG! Decadent Donuts, which proved a popular hit at our Mother's Day Breakfast, and to welcome Roast 66 Coffee Roasters to our school community for the first time. We look forward to seeing many families there!
Lastly, the fundraising team were thrilled by the positive response from families interested in participating in our upcoming Chocolate Fundraiser . Further details, including how and when orders can be placed, will be shared soon, so please keep an eye out for upcoming communications.
We greatly appreciate the support of our families and community members. Your involvement helps create the welcoming, connected and vibrant school environment we are proud of. We wish everyone a wonderful start to Term 3!

The Lakes South Morang College is committed to providing an environment where students are safe and feel safe. Our child safety framework includes policies, codes and procedures that explain how we support and maintain the safety and wellbeing of our students and protect them from harm. These documents are available on our school website. We are committed to continuous improvement of our child safety framework. This includes ongoing communication / education with students around safety and wellbeing, briefing new staff on child safety protocols at our school and reviewing the physical layout of our buildings and grounds to promote a safe environment. Our students and families are important partners in this process and we welcome your feedback on ways we can improve our approach to child safety and wellbeing.

WAKAKIRRI 2026: ROOTS BETWEEN US
Excitement is building as our Wakakirri team continues to work hard in preparation for this year's performance, Roots Between Us. Since the beginning of the year, students from across the Secondary Campus, alongside two talented Year 6 students, have dedicated countless hours to rehearsals, developing their performance and bringing this powerful story to life. Roots Between Us explores the impact of environmental change on our world and reminds us that the future of our planet lies in our hands. Through movement, drama, music and storytelling, students share a journey from a thriving natural environment to a world transformed by human activity. At its heart, the performance delivers a hopeful message: when individuals come together with a shared purpose, we have the power to become guardians of the Earth and create positive change for future generations. Rehearsals have been progressing exceptionally well, with students demonstrating commitment, creativity and teamwork at every session. As performance day draws closer, the cast and crew are refining their work, strengthening their storytelling and preparing to share this important message with a wider audience. We are proud to announce that our Wakakirri performance will take place on Wednesday 5 August at the Clocktower Centre, Moonee Ponds. This exciting opportunity will allow students to showcase the culmination of months of hard work, collaboration and dedication on a professional stage. We would like to thank all students, families and staff who have supported the program throughout the year. We look forward to celebrating this incredible achievement with our school community and wish the cast and crew all the best as they enter the final stages of preparation.
We can't wait to see Roots Between Us inspire audiences and remind us all of the important role we play in caring for our environment.

WELCOME TO THE 2026 VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open, and The Lakes South Morang College is excited to be participating. The PRC application offers a range of exciting features including: Access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs) A modern user-friendly interface Rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved The option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review.

The 2026 Challenge theme is ‘Stories to discover. Stories to tell’.
It is not a competition; it is a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books. Prep to Year 2: Read a total of 30 books, with 20 or more of those books from the Challenge book list Year 3 to Year 9: Read a total of 15 books, with 10 or more of those books from the Challenge book list Year 10: Read a total of 15 books, with 5 or more of those books from the Challenge book list.

OFFICE HOURS AT THE LAKES Parents/carers are welcome in our office areas when they are making payments, bringing a child in late or picking up a sick child from sick bay. Students are not to use these areas before school or after school. The Lakes South Morang College’s grounds are supervised by College staff from 8:50am until 3:15 (Secondary Campus), or 3:30pm (Primary Campus). Outside of these hours, College staff will not be available to supervise students. If a student is not collected before supervision finishes at the end of the day, the Principal or nominee staff member will consider whether it is appropriate to: attempt to contact the parents/carers attempt to contact the emergency contacts place the student in an out of school hours care program (Primary Campus only) contact Victoria Police and/or Child Protection to arrange for the supervision, care and protection of the student.
BELONGINGS, AMBULANCE & INSURANCE Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department of Education does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage. Parents and carers are reminded that the Department of Education does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and carers of students who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs. CSEF (CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND) The Department administers the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) to help eligible families with the costs of camps, sporting activities and excursions/incursions. From 1 January 2026, families eligible for CSEF will see an increase in support to $400 for primary and secondary school children, up from $154 and $256 respectively. Applications for 2026 CSEF support will open from 27 January 2026 to 26 June 2026
Please also be aware that both the Primary and Secondary Campus offices will close at 4:00 pm each day.

Forms can be downloaded on the Departments website under Camps Sports and Excursions Fund or you can obtain one from the school office. Prep and year 7 government school students who are CSEF recipients are also eligible for a uniform voucher. Schools are required to make applications on behalf of parents, so please register your interest at the school office.
As required by the Department of Education, all schools must notify parents/carers informing that their child is absent. Please inform the office of absences before 10am each morning.

Recent Departmental changes to this policy mean that this now only has to be completed once during your child’s educational journey at The Lakes. As a component of our transition to Compass, all families across the College will be sent a message on Compass or contacted by a member of staff in regards to Permission to Publish for your child provided at enrolment. If at any time parents/carers wish to give or withdraw their consent, they can by contacting the College or completing the form below.
NO HAT - NO PLAY We will be enforcing our ‘No Hat, No Play’ policy in Term 1 and 4 on the Primary Campus. Wide-brimmed hats (with the school logo), are available at the uniform shop. ROAD SAFETY AROUND THE LAKES SOUTH MORANG COLLEGE The Lakes South Morang College is situated near busy roads with heavy traffic throughout the day, with particular attention to the front of our school, where we have several busy intersections and shared pathways with Coles, Collingwood Language School, Merriang SDS and the Kinder. We strongly remind all families that students must always use the designated school crossings. We are increasingly noticing students exiting or entering vehicles while crossing or weaving through traffic, which poses a serious risk. Please use the designated drop-off zones and encourage your child to cross only at supervised crossings. Holding your child’s hand near roads and vehicles is a simple but effective way to support their safety. Please also take the time to talk with your child about how to stay safe near parked cars, footpaths, and driveways.
YEAR 5/6 NOTEBOOK PROGRAM - 2026 We’re writing to inform you of an important change to our technology program for Year 5 and 6 students starting in 2026. After careful consideration and in consultation with the School Council and broader school community, The Lakes South Morang College has made the decision to transition from iPads to Windows touchscreen notebook computers for students in Years 5 and 6. This move aligns our Primary and Secondary learning experiences and brings our technology use in line with most primary schools across Victoria, who have already adopted Windows-based programs. It also ensures our students are better prepared for the digital expectations of Year 7 and beyond. Why Are We Transitioning to Notebooks? While iPads have served many learning purposes, they are limited in supporting the broader skills needed in upper primary and secondary education. Windows-based touchscreen notebooks: Offer a full desktop computing experience Support keyboard proficiency and multitasking Provide compatibility with the software and systems used from Year 7 onwards Offer improved file management, software flexibility, and better integration with our college systems Devices purchased through our approved portals will be
supported at The Lakes in Years 7 and beyond. Support stylus use for handwriting and drawing
