Indeed, HSDC exists to realise the ambitions of our community – raising aspirations, enabling achievement and fulfilling dreams. The government continues to invest in the National Skills Fund and Adult Learning, and through this HSDC has a range of fully funded courses to help adults train and gain the valuable skills they need to improve their job prospects (criteria applies). This guide will offer you an introduction to our courses and our Outstanding adult provision. Have you been affected by redundancy or do you need help getting back into work?
Unemployment can be a difficult time for anyone. We provide a variety of free part time courses for adults who are unemployed and are seeking to return to work, or individuals who would like to develop their skills. We teach practical skills for individuals or local businesses. We can also provide information, guidance and access to careers information to help you get the most out of your time with us. We run courses at both our Havant and South Downs campuses, along with a number of locations in the Portsmouth area including Leigh Park Learning Centre. Built around developing or learning new skills and increasing confidence, we have specifically designed courses (programmes) in partnership with employers, local authorities and job centres, to meet not only your needs but the employment opportunities within our local communities. We offer courses suitable for various industries including Business Administration, Customer Service, Retail, Digital Skills, Warehousing & Storage, Care and Hospitality &
Catering. We also offer wellbeing qualifications to support your personal development. We offer these courses mainly face to face, however, some are also available as online taught versions. We also have a suite of pure distance learning courses available, see page 37. Using dedicated staff with industry experience and delivering nationally recognised qualifications, these programmes are fully funded if you are unemployed and in receipt of benefits such as Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance. If you’re considering studying at a higher level, HSDC Higher Education courses provide an alternative to university. An Access to Higher Education Diploma is the ideal way for adults who may have missed out on Higher Education, A Levels or Level 3 qualifications when they were younger to qualify for entry to a degree or other Higher Education course. The Access qualification is a popular, nationally recognised qualification designed to provide you with the skills you need to bridge the gap between your current qualifications and a degree-level course. You’ll develop your knowledge and skills in key areas of practice, as well as improve your analytical and essay writing
abilities to prepare you for higher level education. On successful completion of your Access course, you could progress onto a Higher Education course at HSDC. CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE FOR YOU
As one of the largest colleges in Hampshire, HSDC offers a wide selection of courses to suit an individual’s needs.
LEVELS Qualifications in England are
LEVEL 4 – Certificate of Higher Education, Higher National Certificate (HNC), NVQ Level 4, BTEC Level 4 Professional Award, Certificate or Diploma. LEVEL 5 – Diploma of Higher Education, Foundation Degree (FdA), Higher National Diploma (HND), BTEC Level 5 Professional Award, Certificate or Diploma. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Dependent on the level and type of course, there may be specific entry requirements for those wishing to enrol on to the programme. However, as an adult with life experience, you may not always require formal qualifications. For many of our programmes we take your past work experience into account and may ask you to attend an informal interview so we can assess the right level of course for you.

FREE COURSES You may be eligible to have your course fully funded if you are: • Over 19 years of age as of 31 August 2023 • A resident in the UK for the last three years • In receipt of Jobseeker’s HSDC is able to offer financial support to aid vulnerable and disadvantaged students. Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit (in some instances) or earning less than £18,525.00 per year However, depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible to receive full or part funding for a course. Advanced Learner Loans to help adult learners manage the costs of Further Education and training in England. These loans cover tuition fees for a range of Level 3 to Level 6 courses. PROFESSIONAL BODY MEMBERSHIP Courses leading to a professional qualification require students to register with the professional body. Any costs, including annual subscriptions, are payable directly to the professional body by the student and will be discussed at the start of the course. FEES PAID BY AN EMPLOYER OR OTHER ORGANISATIONS A learner may have made an agreement for course and other fees to be paid by their employer. This is an agreement made between those two parties. Where it has been confirmed as part of the enrolment process that the fees for the learner are to be paid by a sponsor or an employer, then formal and written confirmation of this must be submitted to the College. If you require the fee authorisation form, email admissions@hsdc.ac.uk to request a copy.
The College must receive the signed fee authorisation form or a purchase order at the point of enrolment, otherwise the learner will be asked to pay the full fees due. It is also important to note that if you (as the student) withdraw from the course, the employer will still be responsible for payment of the course fees due. TRAVEL & FINANCIAL SUPPORT TRAVEL & FINANCIAL SUPPORT College financial support may be available if you or your household is in receipt of an income based benefit. Once an eligible benefit has been seen and approved by the Student Travel & Support Department, the college may help with: • Refund of travel costs between home and the course venue (bus, train, or mileage, up to a specified amount) • Financial assistance towards compulsory items of uniform and/or kit relating to the course (depending on the course of study, a financial contribution may be required) • Refund of Accountancy Technician (AAT) membership fees • Refund of compulsory books needed for the course • Financial assistance towards UCAS administration fees • Refund of travel expenses for up to three University visits for open days/ auditions/interviews (up to a specified amount) • Compulsory/Essential day trips or residentials that have a strong link to the curriculum criteria • Financial assistance towards childcare costs, whilst studying your course College financial assistance is a limited fund of money that offers no guaranteed right to assistance. HSDC reserves the right to change items listed based on funding available.
DISCRETIONARY FINANCIAL SUPPORT HSDC recognises that there are some circumstances where a student may be experiencing financial difficulties, but the household is not in receipt of an income based benefit. The college may be able to help with some college related costs if students are facing financial barriers to learning. Please speak to a member of the Student Travel & Support Team for further advice if you think you could benefit from this additional assistance. All discretionary applications are assessed by each individual case and appropriate evidence will need to be supplied. REFUNDS
Where the above exceptional circumstances do not apply the following refund terms apply: • Before a course starts - full refund (minus a £25 admin fee). • Refunds may be permitted for learners who withdraw within the first six weeks or before the middle of the course if the course is a full academic year (minus a £25 admin fee). • No course refunds are permitted after mid-point unless there are exceptional circumstances. Refunds will only be considered in the following circumstances: The College closes the course or changes the day, time or venue of a previously advertised course. • Serious illness or hospitalisation of the learner evidenced by medical certificates. Any refund granted will be based on the remaining classes of the course after a claim has been received. • Serious illness or hospitalisation of a partner, parent or child necessitating full time care by the learner, confirmed by a medical certificate. Any refund granted will be based on the remaining classes of the course after a claim has been received. • Other exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the College. In the first instance, an application in writing should be made to the Finance Manager. • No refunds are made if the learner leaves or is suspended or is excluded in accordance with the College Disciplinary Code.
