Loyning Angus - Annual Production Sale [4/18/26]

62 Yearling Angus Range Bulls and 2 Mature Herd Sires

Saturday

April 18 , 2026 • 5 pm Warren, MT

Thank you to all of you for your interest in our program here, and welcome to our 8th annual Loyning Angus sale. As our “Simply Maternal” motto suggests, we are all about maternal functional efficiency. In our commercial herd, the cow that goes unnoticed the longest is the best cow. She is the cow whom we’ve never had to interfere with in any way. She does her job and never draws negative attention to herself by under producing. In a range cow outfit, the cow that overproduces generally works herself out of a job. So, we’re back to that old cow that has done her job well enough within your environment/management system who as your trailing along one day, you wonder to yourself, “Who is that cow? She is ten years old, and I don’t really remember anything about her.” I’ll tell you who she is. She is your most profitable cow. She is the premise of our entire breeding program. Our primary goal is to raise bulls that go out and produce functionally efficient range cows for our customers. You’ll find the steer calf mates produced will be very acceptable in terms of terminal merit within your system too. The ideal cow in our mind’s eye is feminine headed, long necked with a strong level topline and is wedge shaped in her body composition. She is structurally correct, slopes off slightly from hooks to pins, is strong hocked, and has good feet. She has an excellent udder, and is moderate in her milk production. She is hormonally balanced as evidenced by her sleek and glossy hair coat. She is highly fertile. She has a soft and intelligent eye. This cow is of exceptional maternal disposition. Her whole world revolves around her calf, and she wants and loves to be a mother. She knows how to go out, forage, and scrap for her living if need be. This cow is closely bred for added prepotency to produce consistently and be able to renew herself through her daughters. These unquantifiable traits/qualities seem to get forgotten in the world of bigger is always better and biggest is best. In the race for EPD, carcass, DNA marker superiority, or whatever it may be, maternal traits are generally the first traits to be left in the dust. Contrary to popular belief, you can’t have it all. There are tradeoffs in everything. At Loyning Angus, we bowed out of the race a long time ago. Hell, we were never really in it. We want to focus on making the mother cow better at what she does. She is our factory after all, and we want to optimize her. Instead of single mindedly worrying about the quantity that our factory produces (at all costs), we want to optimize the functional efficiency of our factory and focus on the quality of what she’s producing. Our focus is “Simply Maternal.” We want you, our customer, to be able to produce females that enhance your bottom line through the ability to limit feed and labor expenses. Should you have specific end product goals in mind, you have the flexibility to terminally mate those females and hit those targets. We must remember that terminal traits belong on a plate and not in the replacement pen though. With all that said, we run these cows as real as we can. They range on high desert native grass pastures for 8-10 months of the year depending on what mother nature will allow. We don’t prop them up, and if they are going to fail, we let them. During the two to four-month period they aren’t on range grass, they eat hay. This winter they came out of the hills about the 10th of February. They are currently being fed 24 pounds of hay, a mixture of alfalfa, oat hay, and orchard grass/sainfoin mix, and 2 lbs of cake along with free choice salt and mineral. These cows would be an extremely profitable set of commercial production cows for any range cow outfit on the northern plains. They know how to get it done. We breed our running age cows in multiple sire breeding pastures. This ensures that the herd bulls have to compete in order to mate and propagate themselves. Parentage is then determined on the resulting calves through DNA. During our fall preconditioning work, we choose the bulls that make the cut and our replacement heifers before DNA parentage results are known. This eliminates any preconceived notions on who ought to be the best. None of “He’s out of old such and such he ought to be okay.” They either make it, or they don’t. All of the sires to these bulls breed/bred cows. The same can’t be said about many AI stud sires as they never leave their run, and when they do, it is usually to be canned as the industry has moved on to the next latest, greatest thing. As you look through our pedigrees, you will see that part of the bulls selling are registered and part are commercial purebred bulls. One group of the commercial purebreds stem from females purchased starting in 1993 from Cole Creek Angus. We didn’t keep registration papers up on these cows, but we did keep track of pedigree. They are 100% purebred Angus. The Cole Creek based cows’ sons will have a C following their name in the catalog. The other group stems from a set of cows purchased from my late friend Larry Leonhardt at Shoshone in 2011. The solid foundational base behind these bulls, with our own environmental and selection pressures applied to make “Simply Maternal” Loyning Angus cattle. The Shoshone based cows’ sons will have an SH following their name in the catalog. This set of bulls was weaned off of native grass pasture, mother’s milk, salt, and mineral. At weaning they went on free choice sainfoin hay and two lbs. Power Booster Bull Challenger from CHS. They are now worked up on to 15 lbs. of Power Booster Bull Challenger and are consuming about 20 lbs. of sainfoin hay per day. On average, they have gained 3.15 lbs. per day. The bulls were weighed onto test at weaning 11/04/25 and were weighed again on 3/2/26 for a 118-day test. The gain ratio was figured during that period. We slowly grow these bulls out in order to ensure structural soundness and set them up to succeed in rough breeding pastures. We understand that the breeding season is a marathon not a sprint and marathoners aren’t obese. These bulls are developed to go out and stay strong and productive throughout the entire breeding season and seasons to come. Yes, they will work down some, but the bull that doesn’t generally isn’t doing much. We will not be clipping the bulls as we like to be able to see them in their full hair coat. Their coat is a good indicator of masculinity and hormonal balance. These bulls have been handled almost exclusively horseback for their entire lives and are generally easy to handle and respect a saddle horse. Prior to the 2020 breeding season, we made the decision to concentrate on further enhancing the ability of our cattle at high altitude. I searched and researched for the right outcross to bring in that would not disrupt the “Simply Maternal” direction of our program. All roads led to certain

lines within the Emulation population. We are aware of the reputation for poor dispositions within the Emulation line and have been very careful in screening these genetics we’ve brought in. Initial results look very promising/useful and we look forward to using these genetics to further enhance the Loyning Angus line. We want these cattle to be able to thrive anywhere in the west, high or low. January 1, 2025 marked a big change for me and my family. Brook and I purchased Loyning Ranch from my mom and dad! My mom and dad are still going to stay here on the ranch with us. We get the bigger headaches and bigger bills now! We will continue to run both a purebred and commercial operation with future opportunities to expand the seedstock portion of our operation. Some people might think “man, Ben’s not very smart for wanting to take that on”, but I’m pretty excited. These “Simply Maternal” genetics make this job easy and enjoyable. Mother Nature can be nasty at times but I truly believe our “Simply Maternal” genetics are the right kind to bend with her ebbs and flows. Now the rest of this crazy world, I have no answers for that! Ben Loyning

They Can Take it Yes, it’s just a bunch of horses standin’ out there in the rain. The reason they are doin’ it is easy to explain. There is no shelter handy, so to travel ain’t no good; And they wouldn’t go into a barn, not even if they could. It is just a little weather, and they’re plenty used to that. Like a cow boy in the open, livin’ underneath his hat. All the horses and the people that has lived their life outside. Seems to have a constitution that can take it on the hide. Without a bit of thinkin’ I could tell you right from here, Of horses livin’ on the range as long as thirty year. While the horses that’s in stables, and was always roofed and fed. Lots of them before they’re twenty, has been hauled off plenty dead. So it seems the way with people, and it seems the way with stock. And the cedar grows the toughest when it’s right amongst the rocks. That’s why horses, men, and women, if they’re made of proper stuff. Gits along a whole lot better if they’re raised a little rough. - Bruce Kiskaddon

Sire of lots 5140, 5148 On a trip up to visit Voss’ I had seen End Run and his full sister as weaned calves in the fall of 2016. End Run was kind of another bull in what was a strong contemporary group, but his sister was an absolute knockout in her group. She was feminine, soft, and beautiful. They are full sibs to Horse Butte 7013 of 1116 who has been so influential at McNamee’s in Miles City. I was the contending bidder on 7013 when he sold in 2008. On another trip up there, I had seen their dam, 0133, who really left an impression on me. She was moderate, ultra feminine, wedge shaped, and had the longest, neatest looking hip I maybe have ever seen on a cow. She was very unique and useful cow. Anyways, all this gets stuck in my head and several years later I ask Dennis about End Run. Dennis tells me he’s one of the most, if not THE most athletic bull who’s ever ran on the butte and that I can take him when his work is done up there. We ended up with him in 2023 as a seven year old bull and he worked that season and the 2024 season for us. His daughters here look

The Sheepeaters, a poorer tribe who were double tough survivors in a very harsh land. They foraged on much of the same country these cows do. Tukudika’s dam was offered up by my good fried Dennis Voss for us to flush in hopes of gaining another useful cow family to work with. Her lineage is straight Murray Corbin, Tail N Emulous breeding. She had crossed well with Dennis and Erica’s Horse Butte genetics, so he thought naturally she ought to work well for us here. She was a wells structured cow, who was sturdy, quiet in disposition, and productive. Tukudika is also sturdy with a quiet disposition. He has matured into quite a specimen just like his sire. His daughters look very promising as they’re coming into production, and yes I think Dennis was right, they are working very well for us thus far. These young Tukudika daughters are quiet, sturdy, and look like they’ll be productive. Bred and owned by Loyning Angus

similar to that full sister that got so stuck in my brain. Bred and proudly co-owned with Horse Butte Ranch.

He bred far more than his share and his calves all came unassisted. 248’s dam, 6003, thrives in our environment. She is always in just the right shape no matter the season. Never too fat and never too thin in appearance. She’s moderate but not small and there is some dimension to her. Her foot and udder quality is impeccable. She produces right in the average and has never needed assistance in any way. She stays mothered and would much rather be in the lead than in the drag. A pretty, useful, and enjoyable kind to be around. 248 is similar to his sire, Johnny X, in phenotype, but I think he is just a bit more handsome that the old man. His calves are very consistent. The bulls are masculine, moderate, clean made, calving ease bulls. The heifers are feminine, moderate, clean patterned, fancy uddered little range cows in the making. Bred and owned by Loyning Angus

3116 is the cow we try to intensify most in our program. She is maternal finesse. Thanks Dennis and Erica Voss for sharing her influence.

Sire of lots 503, 516, 586, 5159, 5179, 5197 Galen Voss bought this 97 bull as a yearling. I really liked the bull when he sold and at the time had thought about retaining him for use here. His mother was only a first calf heifer when she raised him so I figured I’d have more chances to keep one of her sons in the future. The next year she had a full brother to 97, Loyning 7 Equinox 0009, who sold to Edie Creek Angus in Manitoba Canada. Again my thought was she’ll have another. Fast forward and it’s been heifers for 7008 ever since! Galen had been really bragging 97 up to me and loved everything about him. So I brought 97 back into the program and man am I glad I did! He sired a very high quality, impressive set of calves for us. Bulls and heifers alike, are equally useful. He has a very quiet disposition and is agreeable to work with. We are keeping 2 of his sons to use back in our purebred program and will breed all of his daughters. He hasn’t made one calf here that doesn’t pass muster as far as I can tell. They are consistently good. It’s almost like I planned this out 10 years ago...You gotta love it when a plan comes together! My next plan for 97 is for him to breed all the cows 10 years old and up. I think it’ll work! Bred by Loyning Angus and proudly owned with Galen Voss.

Sire of lots 563, 577, 585, 5120, 5214 Fester came from my good friend Tyler Shea in Broken Bow, NE. I had called Tyler looking for a “straight Shoshone” bred bull would offer up a bit of outcross for the lines we work with. While he’s not a complete outcross as out herd is heavily influence by Horse Butte 1116 of 3116, his dam Shea Frances 6380 does offer up a bit of a “stir” for us. 6380 is the result of a mother/son mating. Her mother 6384 was one of the most ideal cows that Tyler purchased from Larry Leonhardt at Shoshone. Those cows are strong and sturdy, yet feminine, refined, and functionally efficient. There is a bit more birthweight in the Fester calves, but I really like what I’m seeing from his progeny so far. We have retained a son and several daughters to go back into our herd. Sire of lot 5164 My friend Dennis Voss offered this bull up for us to use based on how well he worked up there at Horse Butte. He comes from the Oliver program in GA. The Olivers use straight Wye genetics and apply their own maternal selection pressure to them. Ed Oliver was an excellent cattleman and good friend to Larry Leonhardt. We only used 911 for one breeding season and he got turned out in a very competitive mob. Unfortunately we only identified one calf by him. The calf is a good one. He is proud fronted, free moving, and very virile. Larry Leonhardt named his sire Pivot because at the time he was born he thought Pivot was a bull that offered a positive genetic contribution to any and every cow in the Shoshone herd. It took Larry a lot of time and effort to get every animal slotted in just the way he wanted in Pivot’s pedigree. Pivot Point’s dam Shoshone Prudence 6157, should be everyone in the cow businesses model of what a functionally efficient female looks like. She shows up on the top side of this pedigree as well and it’s just another layer of positive, forward bred depth to his pedigree. He is “Shoshone Yellow” through and through. When I got this bull home, as I studied him, I thought “man this bull has that same look in his eye that Larry did as he studied me across his desk through the Winston smoke.” It was a very wise look. So we call him “Smoke” in honor of Larry. So far the Smoke calves are everything I expected. Smoke sons are athletic and virile, driven harder by sex than by appetite and their best days are out in front of them. The Smoke daughters should be where he really shines. At this point they are beautifully feminine, wedge shaped, clean made, and a bit smaller than our average. I know this kind pretty well and they do require a bit of patience. They’re going to get there and be about everything you’d want, but it will take them a year or two extra to do so. With that being said I expect they will pay dividends with extra longevity, and will be very functionally efficient. We are keeping four Smoke sons to use in our program and all of his daughters. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em! Bred by and proudly co owned with Dockweiler Angus

Sire of lots 540, 5106 Exponent is line bred Ester 3116, and Encore. His dam is a full sister in blood to the close bred Loyning 612 Encore 810 bull that Sheridan Burgess has had such great luck with. Exponent is a clean patterned, square made, structurally sound, sleep all night heifer bull. He’s not just a heifer bull his daughters shouldn’t have a choice but to be very useful females. His dam, 027, results from a full sib mating of Loyning 6141 Encore 612 to his flush sister Loyning Ester 6008. 027 is moderate, very pronounced in her feminine wedge, smooth made, with a near perfect udder. Sire of lot 561 Poet is a son of the 9035 cow who went internet viral after hobbling out of the hills having been given up for dead. Best we can figure she got hit by a train. Her foot was cut off, shoulder caved in and her right ear had been chewed off by something. Most amazing of all she had a beautiful healthy heifer calf at side who had to have been born a couple of months after her ordeal with the train. As of this writing that heifer calf, Loyning Prudence 4, is just about ready to calve and man is she ever ideal! 328 is an excellent heifer bull. He is a very masculine, “Bonsma” shaped bull. He appeared to be the dominant bull in the heifer mob this past season so we should be getting a bunch more calves. I expect Poet’s daughters to be feminine, ideal in their size and functional makeup, and agreeable to be around. Bred and owned by Loyning Angus

He’s a boss kind of bull. He is a thick made, athletic bull out of a sweet little cow. Yes, he performed well and did everything we asked but ultimately his mother was the deciding factor in keeping him here. She is ultra feminine yet sturdy enough, is very functionally efficient in her make-up, and her maternal disposition is as good as it gets. 1138’s pedigree is made up of excellent range cattle and that is what I expect he and his sons to leave behind. 1138’s daughters in production sure are nice! Feminine, broody, perfect udders, and productive. Bred and owned by Loyning Angus.

We thought he was the nest bull offered in the 2021 Sinclair sale. Kevin is thick made, with a long stride, good feet, good nuts, good disposition, good performance, and a strong maternal heritage. We thought he could bring in some more performance without too much disruption to our maternal direction. The Kevin sons are square made and easy going. The Kevin daughters are deep bodied, yet feminine, easy doing, nice uddered, quiet dispositioned mothers. The Kevin sons will be a nice way for

The 90 daughters are very sharp made young cows, and I like them a lot! 2111 went out in our heifer mob in 2023 and 2024. na na Line-bred Sinclair Old Soul 9L16 with the ideal model cow for our program, 9036, as the glue on the bottom side of the pedigree. Lot 508’s dam is about as solid as a range cow can get with excellent feet and an excellent udder. If you want to make cows that do it on their own with little to no outside help this bull will do a fine job of it. He could be used on heifers. na na na na

na na Did you come to buy the program? Well here he is. While I’m confident in all of these bulls we’re selling; I am 100% in on this guy. His mother is one of the best 612 daughter’s, her mother is still in production at 12 years old in Minnesota, and her grandmother is right up on calving here at 15 and still sports excellent feet and udder quality. They descend from my very original cow purchased in 1993. These cows are tough. They not only survive tough conditions they thrive. While those that know me might think they know who my favorite cows are, they are probably wrong. If the cows ever had to leave the ranch this particular line would be the last to go. Excellent heifer bull., na na na na

na na This Exponent son’s dam is 9036, the maternal grandam of lot 508. She is THE standard by which other cows are judged in our program. His pedigree is full of forward bred Shoshone, Horse Butte, Dockweiler, and Loyning genetics. Use him on heifers or cows and be confident in the females he’ll leave you. He’ll outsire himself. Could be used on heifers. na na na na

na na This burly Poet son belongs to Gus. We are excited and hopeful to be getting many more calves from this sire group in the future. Expect moderate, feminine, functionally efficient females and uniform, useful steers from this bull. Excellent heifer bull. na na na na

-6 +14 Yet another excellent Fester son. You will not find another pedigree like this anywhere. He’s an excellent representative of Dennis and Erica Voss’ forward breeding with the Ester’s in their Horse Butte program. Throw in Fester’s dam, Tyler Shea’s good Frances 6380 cow, and it’s hard to go wrong. He’s balanced and complete in his makeup and performance figures. It’s hard to see this cow bull go. +4.5 +32 +47 +14

One of the kids always steals Granddad’s horse.

This time it was Moxy.

-6 +17 Good Fester cow bull. His Dam is close bred HBR Shoshone Ester 7133. She is hard working and has a perfect udder. Lot 563 is clean made and hard to pick on, just the kind I like to turn out myself. +3.9 +30 +45 +14

+1 -1 This is a line bred Equinox cow bull and a good one. When we +2.0 +51 +80 +23 brought in the Emulation genetics the ideal outcome I had in my minds eye was something like this bulls mother. She is near ideal in her makeup and she displays an excellent maternal demeanor. I really like this bull and he was on the shortlist of bulls to turn back out here.
