TINY’STREADMILL TREK

The manager of the Plumbmaster Bangor branch, John Weatherill is undertaking a trek challenge to raise funds for Inspire NI. The Portavogie man, known to his family and friends as Tiny, is completing the full distance of travelling from Lands End to John O’Groats, a total of 864 miles in 90 days. Tiny is completing most of the challenge virtually, at home on his treadmill, and the ‘Last Leg,’ 62 miles, will be completed on foot. Tiny’s Treadmill Trek will run for 90 days. The challenge commenced on 25, March with the completion date set as 25, June and he has planned to complete nine to 10 miles per night. The day before his completion date, Tiny will set off from Haldane Fisher, Newry and walk the length of 62 miles to Haldane Fisher, Enniskillen. And in true Tiny style, he has added a twist to this last segment of the trek. The avid walker will also carry an amount of weight on his back, as homage to the weight he has lost through walking. Speaking to Ireland’s Heating & Plumbing Magazine about the fundraiser, Tiny said he felt inspired by his own father who enjoyed walking and completed the Loans End to John O’Groats trek. “My own walking journey has been inspired by my father who loved the great outdoors. I have lost a total of 10 stone through walking, and I wanted to pay homage to that weight loss in this trek. “Back in 2019, as part of Plumbmaster’s fundraising efforts, I walked from the Coleraine branch to the Newry branch carrying a boiler on my back as well as sleeping rough at each branch on the journey.

Local Manufacturers, OFTEC Representatives and College Officials at the opening of the Level 3 Workshop at NRC.

NORTHERN REGIONAL COLLEGE IMPROVES STUDENT LEARNING EXPERIENCES BY WORKING CLOSELY WITH LOCAL INDUSTRY, MANUFACTURERS, AND SUPPLIERS TO ENSURE UP-TO-DATE TRAINING ON MODERN APPLIANCES… Securing sustainability across the industry for the future

L ocal manufacturers have come together and helped to kit-out a revamp of the Level 3 workshop in Northern Regional College (NRC) Newtownabbey Campus. In line with emerging developments in the oil industry, the centre will also have an environmentally friendly bay introducing apprentices to HVO fuel and burners, solar hot water, and heat pump technology. OFTEC Ireland have been supporting the college with development of the centre and ensuring the importance of regulations are adhered to during apprentice training. The facilities at NRC are inclusive of green changes, government plans and preparing students for tomorrows world today. Training students on existing oil

products and integrating emerging technologies such as HVO supplied boilers, heat pumps and solar power hot water, Plumbing Lecturer, Peter Lynch has hailed the new workshop a “real success.” Speaking to Ireland’s Plumbing & Heating Magazine, Peter said: “On behalf of the Northern Regional College plumbing apprentices, I want to express a big thank you to the manufacturers and suppliers who have so generously supported the apprentices through the provision of contemporary equipment for use in their training. “Having the right equipment while training offers apprentices the opportunity to become familiar with the reality of plumbing while they are in the classroom and workshop and provides assurance that on qualifying, these

new plumbers will be fully equipped to provide safe, quality work in the industry. Now is the time for employers to start recruiting apprentices for September’s intake.” Manufacturers have opened their doors for student visits to the production factories and training facilities. After the recent visit to the Warmflow factory, Lisburn back in February, Chris Cormican Area Sales Manager said: “Warmflow is a strong believer in collaboration between industry and educational institutions and in taking forward the results of such collaboration to the benefit of the community as well as the heating sector itself. Sales Manager, Chris added: “To strengthen these essential interactions Warmflow is delighted to be partnering with NRC in the showcasing of the

VALVES

DAVID RHODES, TECHNICAL MANAGER AT ALBION VALVES (UK) LTD EXPLAINS WHY SPECIFIERS SHOULD ASK MORE OF THEIR VALVE MANUFACTURERS WHEN IT COMES TO TODAY’S CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS…

Askmore of your manufacturer

B uildings are becoming more complex in their design along with the desire for more efficient heating and cooling systems. In addition to this, new legislation is driving the use of low-carbon technologies to cut emissions from our building stock. As a result, consultants and contractors must access ever-more detailed information on the products they specify, install, and ultimately hand over to clients. This information can include BIM (building information modelling) data, installation requirements, commissioning techniques and maintenance instructions. It’s a lot to expect, especially in an industry where expertise in such diverse and specialist topics can be hard to find. So, what features should consultants and contractors be looking for to find a manufacturer that can be a strategic partner rather than simply a product supplier? Designers and installers require manufacturers to supply clear and accurate performance information about their products available on the market. This enables them to make good and informed choices about the products they are selecting to better enable them to design combinations of products used within systems that will not only meet their clients’ requirements, but also those set out in building regulations. This has become known as the ‘golden thread’ of information, and manufacturers should be a key source of correct and current data for consultants and contractors.

ASSURANCE Consumers can be assured that our valves have relevant approvals such as WRAS for water and EN331 for gas, as well as product guarantees and supporting documentation such as technical datasheets, installation and operating manuals, and material certification. Valve selection depends on many factors, so involving a manufacturer’s technical experts from the design stage can help to identify any potential challenges that may occur during the installation and commissioning stages, through to the water treatment stages to ensure a successful project handover. FACTORS The three most important factors to consider in sourcing valves are quality, reliability and accuracy. The first two of these can be identified through relevant approvals and warranties. For valve accuracy, ensure that a manufacturer can demonstrate their valves have been tested to provide accurate data on flow characteristics. We now have to consider ourselves an integral part of the construction team and take that responsibility for technical input seriously. Specifying valves for your project should involve in-depth discussions about your technical requirements with a team that understands the demands on today’s building. And at Albion, we don’t think that’s asking too much.

“Valve technology has developed significantly in the past decade, so it’s vital to work with a team that can provide advice on the latest products, such as standard or pressure dependent control valves, hydronic control or pressure independent control valves (PICVs).”

An example of this would be how they have managed to get 16 Kilowatts out of a unit which only has a single fan. This comes down to the design of the fan unit itself with Midea making out a scallop shape cut-out of the blade and this is done to help increase air flow but also to keep the sound down, hence the Midea unit can boast to being one of

NI WATER

FORMATION OF NEW SOLUTIONS ENGINEERING TEAMWILL AID DEVELOPERS AT EARLY STAGE OF APPLYING FOR PLANNING APPROVAL… NIWater launch help for Developers

N I Water has launched a new set of initiatives to help Developers with their planning applications. Chronic underfunding of NI Water infrastructure has been well documented, and we are now seeing the impact of this in our towns and cities. New housing and commercial developments are being halted or delayed due to the inability of water and wastewater systems to cope in over 100 towns and cities across Northern Ireland. Davy McGrath, Head of Developer Services at NI Water explained: “Over £2bn is required over the next business plan just to address this problem. For many areas, investment will be required over a 12-to-18-year period. “However, the impact is being felt on the wider construction industry now, so we need to act to help Developers. We have therefore put in place a new Solutions Engineering Team and a new 3-step Pre-Planning Enquiry process. The key message is that we want to speak with Developers before they apply for planning approval. The larger the plans and development ambitions, the more important it is to consult with us at an early stage.” DRAINAGE SOLUTION AT ROE WOOD CONSTRUCTION SITE An example of how Northern Ireland Water’s Solutions Engineering Team helped progress site construction was evident at the Braidwater Group’s Roe Wood development in Limavady. Michael Sweeney, Technical Manager for the Braidwater Group, confirmed the difficulties faced and explained how they were overcome. “The Roe Wood planning submission was made in 2016 with full approval granted in 2019 but we still had no drainage solution which was delaying the commencement of construction.”

The Braidwater Group’s Roe Wood development in Limavady.

“The introduction of the Solutions Engineering Team allowed an innovative approach to be agreed, formulated and applied which ultimately ensured the delivery of Roe Wood.”

He added: “We had investigated a range of options to ensure the delivery of these much-needed homes in Limavady, but it wasn’t until we had engagement with NI Water’s new Solutions Engineering Team that we really started to see progress.” Mr Sweeney explained that once the team was established, Roe Wood was taken on as a pilot scheme, and a wastewater impact assessment was carried out and a Solution Engineering Report was produced, which not only confirmed the need for a solution but proposed a range of options. A solution was found which enabled progress on the first phase of homes and work is ongoing to ensure a separate storm offset solution will be in place for the remaining phases. Close to 20 families have moved in to date and in total, over 200 homes will be built over the coming years. The Technical Manager concluded: “The introduction of the Solutions Engineering Team allowed an

innovative approach to be agreed, formulated and applied which ultimately ensured the delivery of Roe Wood. We would highly recommend that contact is made with the team at the earliest possible time, given the unique nature of every local network and complex process involved in order to reach a satisfactory outcome.”

ENNISKILLENMODELPRIMARYSCHOOL

SCOTT & EWING LTD HELPS GIVE HISTORIC SCHOOL NEW LEASE ON LIFE – FOR SECOND TIME IN 50 YEARS... MECHANICAL INSTALLATION

W ith its involvement in the Scott & Ewing Ltd has come full circle. The plumbing and heating company was entrusted with the mechanical installation at Enniskillen Model Primary School, a Grade B1 listed building which first opened its doors to pupils in 1867. The new two-storey build comprises of 14 classrooms, and integrates the former red brick schoolhouse, latterly used as offices, into the design. Significantly, this is not the first time that Scott & Ewing Ltd has helped breathe new life into this particular school – replacement of a historically important school building, having also installed the plumbing when the building was originally upgraded five decades ago. The new build, completed by main contractor Woodvale Construction (Scott & Ewing Ltd’s associate company), retains the essential character of the

original school, while also transforming it into a modern, vibrant facility fit for future generations of pupils and staff. Raymond Scott, Contract Manager for the project, said: “The old Model School, completed in 1975, was my first major project as foreman with Scott & Ewing Ltd, so to be involved in its replacement almost 50 years later is a nice way to complete the circle. I wish all staff and pupils success and happiness in their magnificent new school environment.” Underfloor heating is utilised in the new build element of the school, while low surface temperature (LST) radiators are used in the existing former schoolhouse. Natural gas powers the new development, bringing into use the latest condensing boiler and hot water generation technology, all controlled by user friendly BMS controls. The mechanical services have been designed and installed to a ‘BREEAM

Very Good’ accreditation. The delivery of this project comes on the back of Scott & Ewing Ltd’s completion of two Design & Build schools– St Patrick’s PS in Belfast’s New Lodge area, and Holy Evangelists’ PS, Dunmurry. As was the case with those schemes, the installation at Enniskillen Model PS presented was not without its challenges. Due to it being a listed building, the distribution of pipework required careful consideration to ensure all new services were consistent and sympathetic to the Victorian era design. The project timeframe was also impacted by the pandemic, with Public Health guidelines necessitating a site lockdown. The return to work required careful planning and implementation of Covid safe work practices, social distancing, and enhanced sanitisation. Principal of Enniskillen Model PS, Winston Glass, praised Scott & Ewing Ltd’s

SERMET NI SUPPLIES SPACE-SAVING YET HIGH-PERFORMING ELCO BOILER PACKAGE… GAS BOILERS, PUMPS AND PRESSURISATION SYSTEM

S cott & Ewing entrusted Sermet NI with the supply and commissioning of the gas boilers, pressurisation system, circulation pumps and the system hydraulic air/dirt separation– for its Enniskillen Model Primary School project. As minimal plantroom space was a key factor, the Lisburn-based company selected the wall mounted Elco Thision L Plus gas boilers, explained Colin Beggs, Engineer for Sermet. “These boilers not only meet the consultant’s design output, but are also extremely efficient (>96%) fully modulating condensing gas boiler, stainless steel heat exchanger, Ultra Low NOx <23mg/kwh which achieves maximum BREEAM credits . “Being wall mounted on a cascade frame system the footprint of the ELCO Thision L Plus Gas boiler range was the perfect solution for this installation with being fully modulating, high efficiency, easy to manoeuvre gas boilers yet occupying

minimal floor space, which was essential for the plantroom layout design,” he added. The Elco THISION L PLUS is the most powerful wall hung boiler to enter the market, capable of achieving outputs as high as 200kw (or an impressive 1.6MW when fitted in cascade). When fitted in cascade, models have a low installation height of just 1.7m, while they offer the smallest, most compact footprint in terms of width. Up to eight boilers can be fitted in cascade, either in-line or back-to-back. Sermet NI has a long-standing relationship with consultants and contractors throughout Northern Ireland. It has assisted with project design and HVAC plant equipment selections to ensure the client needs are met by maximizing system efficiencies all within the project budget using a varied range of HVAC products.

It has developed a wide-ranging product portfolio representing leading manufacturers from the UK and Europe. After Sales Service is an essential aspect of Sermet’s business and all service engineers are fully trained and qualified in all areas of commissioning and fault finding. Commenting on the completed Enniskillen Model Primary School project, Colin said, “Sermet has a longstanding working relationship with the team at Scott & Ewing, a contractor whom prides themselves on delivering mechanical services to a very high standard. This project being no exception to their every expanding portfolio of completed projects. A great team from management to site level and a pleasure to work with.”

SUSTAINABLE HEATING

Sustainable heating: What are the options?

SOURCE: MYSON

MYSON OFFERS HIGH-QUALITY UNDERFLOOR HEATING AND RADIATORS FOR LOW TEMPERATURE HEATING SYSTEMS SUITABLE FOR A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS SUCH AS PRIVATE HOUSING, SCHOOLS AND OFFICES…

I f we want to reduce energy use, costs and greenhouse gas emissions, we not only need to make our new buildings as green as possible, but we also need to upgrade our existing housing stock. Fortunately, we can rely on advanced technologies such as heat pumps, solar systems and high-efficiency boilers to make our buildings more energy-efficient. Since these technologies work with low system temperatures, it’s key to combine them with a compatible heating system and, contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t always have to be underfloor heating. ENERGY GRANTS To motivate Irish homeowners to upgrade their homes with energy efficiency measures the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland administers grants for energy-saving solutions. Logically, these include attic and wall insulation since a thorough insulation significantly reduces a building’s energy demand. On top of that, grants are awarded for a heating controls upgrade, solar thermal solutions and heat pump

systems, which makes a perfect addition to the insulation because well-insulated buildings are generally heated with low temperature heating systems in order to further reduce energy consumption. UNDERFLOOR HEATING Underfloor heating is top of mind when it comes to low temperature heating systems. Especially because it allows for the lowest flow temperatures to be achieved and therefore makes a perfect pair with a heat pump. Since underfloor heating typically operates at a temperature of below 40°C, the heat pump is able to work at maximum efficiency and thus reduce energy use and heating costs to a minimum. IMPROVED DESIGN Typically radiators aren’t associated with low temperature systems, but they have been continuously optimised over the past decades. By increasing the heating surface and making other design changes, such as moving the convection plates to the hot water channels, it has been possible to increase the heating

capacity, so that modern radiators now work perfectly even at low system temperatures and therefore contribute to the energy efficiency of the heating system. ALTERNATIVE No matter how well underfloor heating works with low temperatures, it’s not always possible to install this kind of heating system. Luckily, owners of well- insulated and modern buildings can rely on alternatives such as radiators and convectors to help optimise their energy use. Especially because changing external and internal heat sources such as solar radiation and electrical appliances have an increasing impact on the indoor climate when the insulation is improved, and the fast reaction times of thermostatically controlled radiators allow users to respond quickly to the heat sources’ influence.

PUMPS AND SYSTEM TREATMENT

WATERTESTING

GAS ENGINEERS COULD NOT ONLY RAISE STANDARDS AND BETTER PROTECT THE NATION’S HEATING SYSTEMS BUT, ALSO BENEFIT FROM GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES JUST BY OFFERING ROUTINE WATER QUALITY TESTS… Water testingon sites drives up standards andbusiness growth

B y harnessing the latest on-site the job, giving a higher quality service and better protection for homeowners’ heating systems. They can also boost the profitability of jobs to the tune of several thousand pounds every year, by adding a surcharge to annual services and value-added treatments like inhibitor top-ups and full system flushes. For example, if an engineer does 100 testing technology, engineers can undertake remedial actions while on annual services per year and implements a £20 surcharge for water testing, they could make £2,000 in additional revenue for just over eight hours’ work. But the main reason engineers can better support their customers and drive growth is because on-site testing allows them to have more productive conversations with their customers about the benefits of treatments such as cleansing the system with an ADEY MagnaCleanse. These findings were reported by a cross- section of engineers who have been using ADEY ProCheck®, which promises lab- quality results without the wait. Since using ADEY ProCheck®, engineers

TESTIMONIALS Sean Payne of S. Payne Plumbing and Heating was one of the first engineers to get hold of an ADEY ProCheck kit and he hasn’t looked back since. Sean said: “It’s ground-breaking, there’s no other product on the market like it. You can see exactly what’s going on with the system in an instant and, best of all, you can also show the results to the customer to help them understand.” Paul Randall of Randall Gas added: “ADEY ProCheck helps me to work smarter, not harder. I’m able to protect heating systems through more profitable jobs. I can carry out my services and talk to the homeowner about their water quality while still on the job and then undertake the work needed to rectify any issues immediately. This removes the need for repeat visits, which ultimately means less hassle for the homeowner and more profitable jobs for me.”

described doing an inhibitor top-up on 72% of service and repair jobs. Assuming an engineer takes on 100 jobs each year and charges a minimum of £30, that equates to approximately £3,000 on top of their standard fees. And, if ADEY ProCheck helps an engineer to take on just 10 extra MagnaCleanse system cleanses per year, in line with the figures that some early adopters have stated, this could be worth more than £5,400 to their business. BENEFITS The ADEY ProCheck water test kit gives engineers an incredibly detailed insight into the water quality inside a heating system by measuring for inhibitors, corrosion, and pH levels on site. This process is quick and easy and involves taking a small water sample, using one of the supplied test strips, then scanning it against a unique test card via the ADEY ProCheck app to receive instant results. These can be emailed directly to the customer and saved in a management portal, which allows the engineer to compare against previous results to identify potential trends.
