En e!et, Kevin Rivette a représenté la communauté franco-ontarienne de la région en remportant, pour la deuxième fois en deux ans, la série d’élimination et le quart de "nale de l’événement, qui a lieu à Asbestos, Québec. M. Rivette a été choisi par le jury et le
public, à partager la scène avec les derniers 24 participants et sera à nouveau en mode compétition les 7 et 14mai, lors de la demi- "nale. S’il remporte celle-ci, il se glissera dans l’une des 12 dernières positions a"n de prendre part à la grande "nale, le 28mai prochain. Le gagnant ou la gagnante recevra

Rivette. Je doutais sérieusement de ce que j’allais faire. » Lors des quarts de !nale, le chanteur a séduit le jury avec la chanson de Wild Cherry, Play !at Funky Music, avec l’aide de Guy St-Jean, mieux connu sous le nom» DeGiancinto «, un DJ très populaire. « Jeme demandais vraiment, ces derniers mois, si je devais continuer cette course personnelle, a expliqué M. Rivette. Mais je dois dire que je me sens de plus en plus con!ant en ma capacité musicale, plus le temps passe. » Le chanteur de Cornwall souhaite inviter les résidents de la ville à suivre ses étapes !nales. "e Colts were trailing 6-5 with only two minutes left in the game when AdamMailhot tied the score at 6-6. L’Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall (HCC) est membre du Réseau Trillium pour le don de vie (RTDV) depuis juin 2013 et participe au programme ontarien de signalement courant. Le personnel de l’HCC signale tout décès imminent a!n que le personnel du RTDV puisse identi!er les donneurs potentiels et communiquer avec les familles pour réa"rmer le consentement. Au cours des trois dernières années, 30 patients de l’HCC ont fait don d’organes et de tissus. À l’heure actuelle, cinq personnes de Cornwall attendent une transplantation d’organe qui leur sauverait la vie. L’HCC a célébré le thème du mois d’avril, Soyez un donneur, au moyen d’une campagne mobile encourageant le personnel de l’hôpital et le public à s’inscrire en tant que donneurs d’organes. « Une campagne de la sorte permet de sensibiliser les gens au fait qu’un don peut sauver jusqu’à huit vies », a expliqué Mike Kroon, gestionnaire de l’Unité de soins aux malades en phase critique, du Service d’hémodialyse et responsable clinique du Programme de don de tissus et d’organes à l’HCC. While on patrol late on the evening of March 31, members of the Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) saw a boat with two occupants heading northbound on the St. Lawrence River to a shoreline dock in the city’s east end. $ey then noticed a man carrying a black sports bag getting o% the boat, walking up to Bad night for a walk
the roadway and heading east. CRTF members questioned the man and searched his sports bag in which they found a large sum of US currency. $e 23-year old from Akwesasne was placed under arrest for being in possession of property obtained by crime. While this was occurring, the boat and its operator departed the dock, heading southbound on the St. Lawrence River. Approximately $200,000.00 in US currency was seized. $e CRTF’s investigation into this matter is ongoing. “Given the circumstances surrounding this shoreline interception, we believe that the monies seized were obtained through illicit activities,” said inspector Steve Ethier, o"cer in charge of the Cornwall Regional Task Force. — supplied photo

C’est en décembre 2015 que le diocèse d’Alexandria-Cornwall a décidé de suspendre temporairement l’utilisation de la Cocathédrale de la Nativité, a!n de permettre l’étude de ce qui semble être un problème de structure concernant le jubé. Le rapport des ingénieurs a été généré et con!rme que le jubé nécessite un renforcement. Le Diocèse prévoit qu’une demande de soumission sera émise en avril et que les travaux pourront commencer au cours des prochains mois. Lorsque les mesures correctives requises seront terminées, la Cocathédrale sera rouverte. If you happen to drive down Sydney Street, at the corner of Third Street, from Monday to Friday, chances are you’ve seen Rose Durley. Surrounded by the magni!cent and imposing houses that make up the historical neighbourhood, the friendly crossing guard has been at her post for 38 years. She’s seen children from all wakes of life, from young tots galloping to their !rst day of school to confused seniors wondering what the future might bring them. “I’ve been a crossing guard for three generations...” Rose Durley “I’ve been a crossing guard for three generations,” she explained in an early morning interview, as countless cars drove past her. “I used to walk young girls that then became mothers later on. I then oversaw their children and I now see their grandchildren!” One can say that Durley knows a thing or two about the city’s kids. “You have to get to know them,” she said. “You can tell when they have a bad day or things aren’t going well at home.” "e corner where she works is nearly always buzzing with the yells of excited kids, making their way through Cornwall. “I got kids walking to CCVS (Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School) and Bishop MacDonell,” she indicated, pointing towards Amelia Street. “But there are also some kids in the neighbourhood who take the bus here. Some of them go to Marie-Tanguay.” As she discusses her role as crossing guard, an older-model Impala stops on the crowded Sydney Street, its passenger window slowly going down. Inside is a woman with dark sunglasses. A man is behind the steering wheel. “Hi there,” the woman says to Durley. "e latter, always smiling and willing to help anyone, approaches the window. "e two babble about directions, the crossing guard pointing to Pitt Street. "e woman with sunglasses thanks Durley before pulling up her window. "e car then makes its way towards Cornwall’s other main artery. “People say this place is my second home,” claimed the crossing guard, laughing loudly. “I love doing it. I get along well with the kids and I love talking to all the people.” "e woman is quite a social person, striking conversations with whoever walks close to her. And by the looks of it, it seems everyone enjoys her company; froma young couple walking towards Second Street to a young father riding his bicycle, his young daughter tucked warmly and safely in a small bicycle cart he pulls behind his bike. all stop to chat with Durley. “She’s the best crossing guard I know,” said the father, looking at Durley. “"ere are not many of them that are willing to talk to people.” But the job consists a lot more than simply holding up a stop sign at vehicles while school children and pedestrians cross the road. “It sometimes is hard work,” declared Durley. “Especially when it gets cold! But I always make sure to be prepared.” "e crossing guard has learned to dress properly. "is includes having hot pods in her boots as well as wearing mittens, long johns and wind pants. Spending somuch time in such a vital and busy part of town has also led the woman to become known throughout the area as the one who knows all . Citizens walking to work in the early hours of the morning always stop by to chat with Durley, knowing full well that she is quite #uent in recent Sydney Street happenings. “So do you know who moved in the house?” asked a woman walking on "ird Street. “I have no clue,” responded the crossing guard."e answer seems to surprise the pedestrian. “What do you mean you don’t know,” she chuckled. “You usually know everything around here!” Durley pointed to a nearby residence where workers were busy tackling an extensive roo!ng job. “I know they’re getting their roof redone,” she exclaimed. To that, the pedestrian laughed, before wishing Durley a great day and continuing her walk. "e crossing guard kept staring at the woman until she was out of sight; as if to make sure she made her way down the road securely. Children aren’t the only ones that are watched over by the experience and caring crossing guard.

qu’elle, soit en 11 e et 12 e année. « C’était amusant, a souligné la !lle de John et "eresa Flannigan, lors d’une entrevue. C’est la première fois que je remporte un tournoi de badminton. » Mais pour remporter la médaille d’or, Amber devait faire face à une coéquipière de La Citadelle, soit Émilie Ménard. « Elle a très bien joué, a expliqué l’étudiante. J’ai dû travailler fort pour gagner. » Amber a donc remporté le premier set avec lamarque de 21-17 et le deuxième par le pointage de 21-10. « Mes parents étaient
très !ers demoi », a ajouté la jeune joueuse, sourire aux lèvres. Pratiquant le sport depuis maintenant six ans, la jeune !lle a participé à plusieurs tournois à Ottawa et à Montréal. « J’ai commencé à jouer parce que plusieurs membres de ma famille jouaient déjà, a-t- elle déclaré. Je pratique toujours avec mon père ou mon frère. » Sa victoire au tournoi S, D et G, qui se tenait à l’école Holy Trinity, permettra à la jeune athlète d’accéder au tournoi de la Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic
Association (EOSSA). « J’ai vraiment hâte, a-t-elle précisé. Mais je sais que ça va être di&cile de gagner. » En e$et, les élèves qui participent à ce tournoi font souvent leur chemin vers les équipes olympiques du Canada. Pour l’instant, Amber ne peut que se pratiquer. « Je vais souvent au Centre Nav », a-t-elle con!é. Mais la chance brille sur elle, puisqu’elle n’est pas la première dans sa famille à participer au tournoi de l’EOSSA. «Mon frère y a été et il a remporté une médaille de bronze. »

T here’s no doubt about it; cancer researchmakes a di"erence. The survival rate of people with cancer in the 1940s was as low as 25 per cent, whereas today, the $gure hovers around 63 per cent. Survival rates for certain speci$c types of cancer are even higher: 82 per cent for childhood cancer; 88 per cent for breast cancer and 96 and 97 per cent for prostate and testicular cancers. However, much remains to be done in the $ght against this disease. Despite signi$cant progress, it is estimated that two out of $ve Canadians will develop cancer during their lifetime, and one in four Canadians will die of it. A small flower for a great cause The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) endeavours to increase the overall cancer survival rate to 80 per cent. One way you can help them with this goal is to buy fresh da"odils sold by CCS volunteers from April 7 to 10, 2016. These bright, beautiful #owers symbolize life and hope. This small gesture of solidarity can make a big di"erence in the $ght against cancer, which remains the leading cause of death in Canada. As well as helping to support people touched by cancer, the CCS’s Da"odil Month awareness campaign helps prevent cancer through education and by raising funds for research projects. In short, together we can save more lives. Let’s unite in the fight against cancer this April

Quitting smoking pays off
Brandon Roud, a Cornwall St. Lawrence College Student, was one of the winners of the Leave the Pack Behind program’s wouldurather contest. As one of the two winners from across the province in the Keep the Count category, Brandon won $1000 for quitting smoking. Roud, who is studying to become a paramedic, said he wanted to quit smoking “because as a paramedic, people expect you not to smoke. I wanted to quit for myself and I wanted to quit for others.” $e wouldurather contest awards cash prizes to eight Ontario residents who are registered students at a publicly-funded post-secondary institution in Ontario or young adults between the ages of 18 to 29. $e contest encourages youth and young adults to decrease their tobacco use or quit smoking altogether. In what is undeniably good news for local cyclers, the City recently announced it has secured $325,000 in provincial funding to help extend and connect the popular o%-road recreational path in its northeast part. A successful application was made to the Ontario Municipal Cycling Infrastructure Program (OMCIP), in the hopes of securing funding to assist with a two-year, $700,000 project to extend the recreational path by 2.4 kilometres. $e City’s plan is to extend the current portion of the path near Optimist Park east, underneath the McConnell Avenue overpass, then southeast to Twelfth Street and east to Virginia Drive. “$is would have the e%ect of creating a near continuous ‘urban loop’ of the o%-road recreational path,” said Steve Wintle, division manager, infrastructure planning. $e !nal details for the project are being completed now and work is expected to begin this summer and be !nalized in the summer of 2017. “Our recreational path is an extremely popular amenity and these improvements will make it even more accessible to residents and visitors,” said St. Marseille. — photo Francis Racine Good news for cyclers
