CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME
There is nothing in world racing quite like the Lexus Melbourne Cup. It is the most eagerly anticipated race in Australia and has been ever since its first running at Flemington in 1861. Today the Cup stops not only a nation. Thanks to our broadcast partners, it attracts a worldwide audience numbering into the hundreds of millions across more than 200 countries.
Wherever you are enjoying the excitement of the Lexus Melbourne Cup, the Victoria Racing Club extends the warmest welcome. On course, a world of excitement and hospitality awaits at famous Flemington. Cup Day is traditionally a public holiday for Melbourne. Meanwhile, Cup Day race meetings, lunches and celebrations are being held today all around the nation and beyond. For the past 22 years we have been connecting with regional and urban centres in Australia, New Zealand and overseas through the annual Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour. This year’s 18 carat gold trophy—the best- loved sporting trophy in Australia—has travelled thousands of kilometres, delighting thousands as the People’s Cup. Today it returns to the Mounting Yard in style, to be awarded to the winning owners. International visitors vying to win the great race have long been part of the tradition. New Zealand horses, after all, have been winning Melbourne Cups since the 1880s. Vintage Crop started a new era when he flew in from Ireland to win the 1993 Melbourne Cup. A hundred years ago the imported Backwood won the Cup after good wins on the English turf. He made the journey by sea, more than a year before his Flemington victory. Today once again, we welcome the world to the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Full of tradition and stories, but as modern as the excitement of this unique event at Flemington today.

1924 Melbourne Cup 100 years since ... Backwood’s
BY ANDREW LEMON
V intage Crop in 1993 famously set the pattern for northern hemisphere racehorses to fly into Australia with the express purpose of winning the Melbourne Cup. But Vintage Crop was not the first northern raider to arrive with Cup glory as the goal. Earlier quarantine protocols meant that imported horses with the Cup in mind needed a long preparation, with a local trainer. In this way, Colin Hayes had prepared the 1980 and 1986 winners, Beldale Ball and At Talaq, in South Australia.
14
1924 - 2024
Even they were not the first. One hundred years ago the Irish- bred Backwood, with good form on English racecourses, won the Melbourne Cup—after travelling to Australia by sea and spending eighteen months acclimatising. Back in the 1890s and early 1900s a fashion had emerged to send successful Australian thoroughbreds to race in England or stand at stud. These included Melbourne Cup winners Newhaven, The Grafter and The Victory. Now the plan was reversed. The Australian-born stock-broking partners who raced The Victory, Lionel Robinson and William Clark, lived and worked chiefly in England. In Australia they could race horses as joint owners. In England, sole ownership was the Jockey Club rule. Their horses in England raced under W. Clark’s name. And it was Clark who paid the goodly sum of 2500 guineas for Backwood at auction in late 1922. Backwood had already won the highly- ranked Ascot Derby. Most recently he had finished a close second in the prestigious 1¾ mile Ebor Handicap at York.

Clark, with Robinson, had used this strategy before, of buying tried horses for Australia. Back in 1913 they purchased St Spasa, a two-year-old winner at Newmarket, son of a Derby winner, and shipped him to Australia. He won the 1914 Metropolitan at Randwick and took the Adelaide Cup in May 1916 before finishing third in the Melbourne Cup. Of course the partners were not the first to import thoroughbreds, and to race them here if circumstances permitted. Technically, Sol Green’s Comedy King in 1910 was the first import from Britain to win the Cup, but he came with his dam as a foal. His Cup success started a trend. When first entries were taken for the 1912 Cup, no less than nineteen aspirants were imports. One of them, Hallowmas, finished second to New South Wales horse, Piastre. Constraints on racing in England during the First World War saw an influx of well-performed horses shipped to Australia where racing continued with fewer impediments. Australian horsemen Frank Bullock and Dick Wootton, with outstanding British careers, were at the forefront of selecting and exporting these horses. Shepherd King won the 1916 Caulfield Cup before his second in the Melbourne Cup to New Zealander,

Sasanof. Five of the seven Caulfield Cup winners from 1915 to 1921 were British imports. Clark and Robinson owned two of them, King Offa and Lucknow. Lionel Robinson died in early 1922. His younger brother, William S. Robinson, undertook to take a share in Backwood, but on the very evening of the purchase—or so he recorded in his memoir—over a convivial business dinner in London, he offloaded his portion to his associates William L. Baillieu (visiting from Australia), seated on his left hand, and shipowner Allan Hughes, on his right. The specific goal, he told them, was the Melbourne Cup. The Baillieu, Clark and Robinson families were linked through marriage, but not Allan Hughes. He never figured in the ownership of any other of their thoroughbreds, but when he heard news of the Melbourne Cup victory, he joked that the purchase validated his judgement of horseflesh. Backwood on arrival was described as belonging to Clark and ‘the Messrs Baillieu’. It was W.L.’s brother, Edward Lloyd ‘Prince’ Baillieu, along with trainer Bradfield, who guided the horse’s progress. He was well placed to do so, a committeeman and treasurer of the Victoria Racing Club and a man who had raced many good horses. Backwood won the Cup in the ownership of W. Clark, E.L. Baillieu and A. Hughes. ‘Prince’ Baillieu, alone of the owners, was at Flemington to see the win. In the VRC Committee Room today hangs a framed photograph of Baillieu joyfully receiving the gold Cup trophy from his old friend, VRC Chairman, LKS Mackinnon. Looking on with satisfaction is the grey-bearded 85-year-old VRC Secretary, Henry Byron Moore. They shelter from the downpour that has just hit Flemington (you can see their wet umbrellas) outside the Members’ Grandstand, in use that year for the very first time. Overseas raiders—but a home town celebration. Hoofnote: Backwood remained in Australia but fell in the 1925 Sydney Cup, and was retired to Widden Stud until his death in 1934. The best of his offspring was the sprinter, Parkwood, who brilliantly won the 1931 VRC Newmarket Handicap at Flemington.

John Patterson OAM ‘Patto’
BY CELIA PURDEY
I n early October 2024, the Australian racing community lost a beloved member of the racing family when legendary figure John ‘Patto’ Patterson OAM passed away at the age of 86. A distinguished horseman, Patterson is survived by his wife Glenys and children Peter, Shane and Sheralee who each share his passion for horses. Patto’s connection to Flemington began in the 1950s when he left his hometown of Coleraine to pursue a career as an apprentice jockey. Though his jockey aspirations shifted, his love for horses remained steadfast. He transitioned to horse breaking and became one of Australia’s most revered educators of young horses. Eventually, he found his calling as a clerk of the course, a role he filled with distinction for decades.
18
VALE ‘PATTO’
Patto’s life was intertwined with the Melbourne Cup and Flemington Racecourse. The first Melbourne Cup winner he led in was Rain Lover in 1969. He then accompanied every winner back to scale until 2013 (with one exception in 1977, when he was sidelined with knee surgery). For 44 Melbourne Cups, Patto was an integral part of the iconic race, leading in victorious horses and jockeys after their triumphs. His calm demeanour and expert horsemanship ensured the safety of both horse and rider amidst the excitement of the race that stops a nation. His image, entering the mounting yard alongside some of racing’s most legendary champions, is etched in Melbourne Cup history. After his retirement, his sons, Peter and Shane, took up the reins, ensuring that a member of the Patterson family has proudly led in the Lexus Melbourne Cup winner every year since. Patto leaves behind an enduring legacy as the longest-serving Clerk of the Course in Melbourne Cup history. He was a much-loved member of the Flemington family, a dedicated horseman, and a mentor to many, as his influence extended beyond the racetrack. He was a respected figure in the equestrian world, participating and judging at the Royal Melbourne Show, retraining retired racehorses, and even designing horse bits. He also shared his vast knowledge and passion with aspiring jockeys and trackwork riders, leaving a lasting impact on the next generation of horsemen. Among a long list of names that he coached to stardom was a young Craig Williams, who shared his tribute at his funeral, held, fittingly, at Flemington Racecourse. “After every Melbourne Cup you rode he was the first person you wanted to see after the race,” Williams said. “He’s synonymous with the race. He was iconic.

VALE ‘PATTO’
“Every single day when he was working, his job was to get the horses and riders to the barriers safely and then back after the race. It was like having our own bodyguard. Rightly, he gets the accolades for being an amazing horseman and he was a person who shared his knowledge and experience and not everyone does. I was one of the benefactors of him wanting to share his vast knowledge. He was a man of few words but when he spoke you listened as his words carried weight. That’s what we loved about him and that’s why Patto was Patto.” Patto’s dedication to the sport was recognised in 2021 with a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to horse racing. In 2023, the VRC paid tribute to the Patterson family’s contribution by renaming the horse walk leading to the winner’s circle ‘Patterson Avenue’. This permanent tribute acknowledges not only Patto’s legacy but also the continued dedication of Peter and Shane. More than just a clerk of the course, John Patterson was a true horseman, a mentor, and a cherished member of the racing community. His passion for horses, his dedication to the sport, and his warm personality will be deeply missed. The legacy of Patto will live on through his family, the countless individuals he mentored, and the many memories he helped create at Flemington. A true gentleman of racing Colin McKenna The Australian racing industry mourns the loss of one of its finest ambassadors, Colin McKenna, who passed away at 74 after a short illness. McKenna’s journey in racing began in 1974 when he celebrated his first winner, ultimately becoming one of the most influential owners in Australia. His death came just a day after his horse, Future History, triumphed at Moonee Valley, and a week after celebrating a second Caulfield Cup success as a part-owner of Duke De Sessa. Long-time friend and trainer Mick O’Leary described him as “the most genuine and supportive person you could have ever asked for,” reflecting on McKenna’s loyalty and encouragement. Renowned for his passion for jumps racing, McKenna’s heart belonged to Warrnambool, where he made a significant impact. His horses, including Jameka, Merchant Navy, and Attrition, raced under his legendary green and blue horizontal stripes. With McKenna’s support, Ciaron Maher became one of Australia’s greatest trainers, their partnership leading to unprecedented success in recent years. McKenna was honoured in 2021 with an Order of Australia (AM) for his contributions to racing. He was well known for his charity work, including an annual fundraising event at his Union Station Hotel, previously known as the Woolsthorpe National Hotel, on the eve of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival, which raised almost $400,000 for various charities in the past three years. McKenna will be remembered not just for his love of racing, but also for his generosity and integrity.

HISTORY OF THE CUP
LEXUS MELBOURNE CUP
For more than 150 years, the Lexus Melbourne Cup has been the ‘race that stops the nation™’, ever since it first captured the hearts of Australians in 1861. Run over 3200 metres, the Cup attracts the best stayers from around the world. Legends like Archer, Carbine, Phar Lap, Peter Pan, Rain Lover, Think Big, Makybe Diva, and Verry Elleegant have cemented their place in history with Melbourne Cup victories. The Cup’s allure has inspired films such as Phar Lap, The Cup, and Ride Like A Girl, captivating audiences across the globe. As a handicap, where horses are weighted based on their ability and race record, the Melbourne Cup exemplifies Australia’s egalitarian spirit. In 2023, it was Without A Fight, ridden by Mark Zahra, who stormed to victory, securing the coveted Spring Cups double after his earlier Caulfield Cup win. The race also marked an emotional day as jockey Damien Oliver competed in his final Melbourne Cup, a race he won three times in his illustrious career. Doriemus his first in 1995, followed by an emotion-charged victory on Media Puzzle in 2002, and his third coming on board Fiorente in 2013, a first win in the race for Gai Waterhouse.
