This increase is to match the City of Ottawa’s planned rate increase for all municipalities, like Russell Township, which are part of the Ottawa municipal water distribution system.
The work begins now to create a final budget plan for Russell Township to meet the municipality’s needs in 2019. Township council received the complete draft budget report during a special session January 14. Council will go over the report line by line during two days of review scheduled for January 24 and 25. “All the requests from the public are not included in this budget (report),” said Mayor Pierre Leroux, adding that all of those presentation briefs received last month will be part of next week’s overall budget review. The preliminary budget report suggests a tax increase of two per cent. For the average homeowner in Russell Township with a house valued at $300,000, that works out to a $32 property tax increase. « Ce n’était pas un feu majeur. Il a été localisé uniquement dans le panneau électrique, mais il a fallu tout un weekend pour nettoyer, dissiper la fumée et enlever l’odeur », a expliqué Linda Bergeron, admi- nistratrice en chef à la Ville de Casselman. Le maire de Casselman, Daniel Lafleur, est allé constater les dégâts quelques ins- tants après que l’incendie se soit déclaré. « Je remercie sincèrement les équipes qui ont rapidement répondu à l’appel. Marcel Cléroux, le responsable du plan d’urgence pour la municipalité, a fait un excellent boulot conjointement avec Mme Bergeron et les pompiers », a-t-il tenu à dire. C’est lundi en fin d’après-midi que les résidents ont tous pu regagner la résidence.
Un incendie s’est déclaré à la rési- dence pour personnes âgées Le Havre, à Casselman, le 11 janvier dernier. Les 25 résidents ont tous été relocalisés pendant le weekend. C’est vers 14 h vendredi dernier que le panneau électrique de la résidence a soudainement pris feu. Rapidement, les résidents ont été évacués et ont été conduits à l’aréna de Casselman. Six d’entre eux ont ensuite été transportés à la Résidence Saint-François, à Casselman, et les autres ont pu trouver refuge dans leur famille. Les flammes n’ont fait aucun dommage.

Lors d’une réunion extraordinaire du conseil de Casselman, on a procédé à l’assermentation du conseiller Marcel Cléroux, qui avait été défait lors des dernières élections municipales. Celui-ci remplace Joanne Sirois qui avait été élue en octobre dernier mais qui a dû se retirer pour des raisons professionnelles. La Corporation du village de Casselman a donc tenu des entrevues afin de nommer un nouveau conseiller. Un des candidats, le conseiller d’Alfred-Plantagenet René Beaulne, qui a une adresse à Casselman, avait posé sa candidature mais l’avait aussitôt retirée ne voulant pas démissionner de son poste de conseiller actuel. C’est la semaine dernière que le choix s’est finalement porté sur M. Cléroux, qui a accumulé plus de points lors de l’entretien d’embauche que les autres candidats. Ce dernier se dit heureux du résultat et a hâte de travailler avec l’équipe. MPP Amanda Simard believes she had no choice but to leave the PC caucus to sit as an independent if she wanted to represent the real interests of her own riding and not those of the Ford government. “If I had stayed, I would have been put ‘in the corner’ for the next three years and not really represented my riding,” Simard said during an hour-long phone interview in both 'SFODIBOE&OHMJTI +BOVBSZi*USVMZGFMU this was an opportunity for me.” Simard won the Glengarry-Prescott-Rus- sell riding for the Progressive Conservatives JOUIF+VOFQSPWJODJBMFMFDUJPO'JWF months later, she announced that she was leaving the caucus to sit as an independent. “It was an accumulation of several things,” Simard said, about the reasons behind her decision. The breaking point was when the Ford government announced closure of the office of Ontario’s French- language commissioner and cancellation of pre-approved funding for a proposed French- language university project, the first of its kind in Ontario. The backlash from Ontario’s French com- munity, combined with her own announce- ment about leaving the caucus, earned Simard renown as a “rebel MPP” and made her the face of Ontario’s francophone revolt in the provincial media. Surprised and confused But Simard noted that the government’s decisions affecting Ontario’s francophone were not the sole reason why she began thinking about leaving the caucus. She was surprised and confused on a regular basis by a government that seemed focused on cost cutting at the expense of support for Ontario’s communities when it wasn’t pro- moting trivial successes like the “buck a beer” campaign. “Honestly, the only way I could be was surprised,” Simard said, noting that her own election campaign began when Patrick Brown was the PC leader, before he was forced to step down. Having healthy teeth plays a considerable role in our well- being and self-confidence. First impressions, appearances and facial expressions—tooth loss can impact these daily realities. Most people dread the idea of losing one tooth, let alone several of them. When a tooth is extracted it can affect our confidence and, for some individuals, create a sense of personal failure. We are always conscious of our smile and how it looks to others. Most people I meet who need tooth replacements are uncomfortable and embarrassed (and typically will take a day off to get the procedure done). I would argue that being confident and happy with your teeth is one of the most important things in life. For example, one of my patients was encountering issues in his sexual life: his dentures were not stable enough, so he did not have the confidence he needed to enjoy himself. His dentures were preventing him from being comfortable in his relationship and that affected him greatly. It is hard to imagine how difficult an intimate moment can become when your teeth are vulnerable and likely to fall out. Such a situation can be incredibly embarrassing, uncomfortable and unpleasant. And because of this kind of potential outcome, many people with dentures avoid intimacy altogether. My client’s initial intention was to regain that confidence. The easy answer was to get dental implants. This would allow him to feel secure and confident, knowing that his new teeth would be strong and healthy just like real ones. Prosthetic teeth are locked into place which removes any fear of them falling out. So, the confidence comes right back and the pressure of trying to hide disappears. Liberating? Yes! Enjoy life and all that it has to offer!

Après plus d’un millier de photos, Rachel Thériault grandit dans son envie de montrer ce qu’elle voit au-delà de la simple prise de photo. « J’aime qu’une photo raconte une his- toire », a-t-elle expliqué. La photographe joue avec la photo cou- leur et prend des personnages en photo, l’équipe de danse entre autres. Lorsqu’elle utilise le noir et blanc, elle s’amuse avec les ombrages et donne une signification à ses images. Comme par exemple celle qui représente, par l’ombrage, la force, ou encore celle où l’on voit trois jeunes filles qui montrent la progression des danseuses. Il faut se rendre à la Maison des arts pour comprendre que l’artiste donne une âme aux photos. Elle sera d’ailleurs présente lors de son vernissage, le 27 janvier prochain, de 13 h à 15 h, où une vingtaine de ses prises de vue seront exposées, pour le plaisir des yeux.
On peut voir ses photos à la Maison des arts dès maintenant. Rachel Thériault, photographe, joue avec les ombres, les personnages et la danse. Voilà maintenant cinq ans que Mme Thériault prend des photos. Au début, elle prenait surtout des photos pour des agents d’immeuble. Mais plus elle appuyait sur le déclic de l’appareil photo, plus elle aimait le moment de capturer l’image et de l’immortaliser. « Lorsque ma fille a commencé la danse compétitive avec le groupe de la Maison des arts, je me suis complètement lais- sée entraîner par la photographie, a-t-elle raconté. J’adorais prendre des photos des filles lorsqu’elles donnaient des spectacles, c’était magique d’emprisonner ces images. » Ses gouts ont changé, ont évolué.
Le couple d’Embrun, Alex Denis et Jean-Sébastien Desforges, a célébré le Nouvel An un peu plus tard que la plupart des gens, à 13 h 06 pour être exact, le 1 er janvier. C’est à ce moment que leur fils s’est pointé le bout du nez. Il est le premier bébé de l’hôpital Winchester District Memorial Hospital en 2019. Téo Desforges pesait sept livres, 10 onces à sa naissance. C’est le premier bébé pour Alex et Jean-Sébastien. Et il n’a pas fait les choses à moitié ! « Tout s’est bien passé et nous sommes très heureux », a déclaré sa mère, Alex Denis. Nous avons passé un excellent séjour à l’hôpital et nous sommes heureux d’avoir notre sage-femme avec nous. » La famille est rentrée chez elle plus tard le même jour et a été soutenue par la sage-femme dans les jours qui ont suivi. Le conseil d’administration de la bibliothèque publique de Casselman a le plaisir d’annoncer que l’assemblée générale de la bibliothèque aura lieu le mercredi 30 janvier 2019 à 19 h à la Bibliothèque publique de Casselman, au 764, rue Brébeuf, à Casselman, Ontario. L’assemblée générale soulignera les réalisations de l’organisme pour l’année 2017 ainsi qu’un bref historique des années antérieures. Nous discuterons également des enjeux présents ainsi que de la relève. Une période de questions suivra. Nous invitons les personnes désirant participer à l’assemblée générale à s’inscrire avant le vendredi 25 janvier en communiquant par courriel à rboucher@casselman.ca ou par téléphone au 613 764-5505.
