The OPP arrested and charged former Hawkesbury high-school teacher, 79-year-old Adrien Asselin, with sexual assault. The historical sexual assault investigation by the Hawkesbury OPP Crime Unit began April 2018 when the victim first reported the abuse. The alledged sexual abuse occurred in the early 1980s, while the accused was a teacher at a local high school. Asselin has been charged with Indecent Assault on Male, Acts of Gross Indecency and Sexual Assault. —archives

Il a été détenu pour une enquête sur cau- tionnement à la Cour de justice de l’Ontario à L’Orignal le 15 novembre 2018. L’enquête de l’agression sexuelle, menée par des membres de l’Unité des crimes de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario, déta- chement de Hawkesbury, a débuté en avril

Two ambulance units, along with police, fire trucks and the emergen- cy rescue van from the Champlain Township Fire Department rushed to an accident last Thursday morning, at the intersection of County Road 17 and Cassburn Road in L’Orignal. At least two cars were involved in the /PWFNCFSBDDJEFOU1BSBNFEJDTBOE firefighters worked together to remove one person from one of the vehicles for ambulance transport.

Police had set up warning flares around the scene of the accident to alert motorists approaching from either side of County Road 17 and from Cassburn Road. According to the last Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) report, the Town of Hawkesbury will see a QFSDFOUJODSFBTFJOUIFCVEHFU *O XBTBEEFEUPUIFUPXOT long-term debt repayment, which already stood at $1.6 million. 5IF 8BUFS 5SFBUNFOU 1MBOU :FBS Strategic Plan that was recently adopted is one such example of a project that could significantly impact the upcoming budget. The total investment for this project stands at approximately $17.85 million, $7.7 million of which will be spent in the first four years. According to administration, a few reserves are available to finance this amount, but the Town will need to look for grants and other

The administration presented challenges and issues to be addressed during budget proceedings, while mem- bers of the community shared their thoughts as to where money should be spent, which mainly included various community projects. This is another budgetary matter to be addressed, through grants and other means. After the Town made its general pres- entation, community members took to the podium to share some of their priorities for the 2019 budget. Most of those who spoke out would like to see more investment towards community projects, such as youth projects, the beautification of the waterfront on Chenail Island, and reparations to the fence on Chenail Boulevard. Mayor Jeanne Charlebois would also like to see at least $5000 of the recreation budget allocated to funding a project, organized by the Town, giving youth the chance to put on talent shows and concerts for the community. This consultation was held with the goal of presenting a general report regarding the upcoming budget and to get a sense of the wants and needs of the community. It will, however, be the new incoming municipal council, headed by Mayor-elect Paula Assaly, that will be making the decisions and drafting the 2019 budget. Winter is coming, and the outlook is gloomy so far about seeing an end this year to road reconstruction work in the village centre of Vankleek Hill. “They (contractors) have been told very directly that we’re not pleased with the way things are going,” said Mayor Gary Barton, at the start of his last official appearance as head of Champlain Township council, /PWFNCFS

“It’s been seven weeks now,” said Barton. “We are really suffering on that part of Highway 34. The businesses are suffering, the people living in the area are suffering.”

The original work agreement called for maintaining a one-lane through traffic route. 5 conseils de sécurité pour faciliter vos freinages et prévenir les accidents

LE SAVIEZ-VOUS? L’hiver, l’huile synthétique est plus efficace que l’huile minérale pour assurer le démarrage de votre voiture, car elle conserve mieux ses propriétés par temps froid.

Neige, glace, eau, verglas… les conditions hivernales rendent la conduite plus difficile. Pour éviter les ac- cidents et freiner efficacement, suivez ces quelques conseils. 1. GARDEZ VOS DISTANCES Lorsque la chaussée est enneigée, glacée ou mouillée, vos pneus y adhèrent moins et la distance nécessaire pour freiner augmente. Vous devez donc maintenir une dis- tance sécuritaire entre votre véhicule et celui des autres automobilistes. Vous aurez alors le temps de freiner ou d’exécuter une manœuvre de sécurité si nécessaire.

2. METTEZ LA PÉDALE DOUCE Ra-len-tis-sez! En réduisant votre vitesse, vous pourrez anticiper les virages et les emprunter en toute sécurité. De plus, rouler moins vite vous donnera plus de temps pour réagir aux imprévus. 3. ÉVITEZ LES MANŒUVRES BRUSQUES L’hiver, les manœuvres brusques (accélérations, frei- nages, virages) risquent de faire déraper votre véhi- cule. Ainsi, à l’approche d’un arrêt ou d’une courbe, freinez tôt et doucement. Bref, ne conduisez pas de manière saccadée. 4. ADAPTEZ VOTRE TECHNIQUE

LE SAVIEZ-VOUS? Atténuer l’éclairage de votre tableau de bord peut vous aider à rester alerte lors de longs trajets, car cela diminue la fatigue visuelle. Inversement, si vous augmentez votre vitesse, vous avez un surplus d’information à traiter, ce qui peut accentuer la fatigue.

Vos freins ne sont pas munis d’un dispo- sitif antiblocage (ABS)? Alors, sur une surface glissante, appuyez doucement sur la pédale de frein. Si vos roues bloquent, « pompez » les freins en relâ- chant la pression, puis en appuyant de nouveau. Au contraire, si vous avez un système ABS, gardez votre pied sur la pédale jusqu’à l’arrêt de votre véhicule, et ce, même si vous ressentez des vibra- tions. N’utilisez votre frein à main qu’en cas de nécessité. 5. ENTRETENEZ VOS FREINS Vous devez absolument faire inspecter, entretenir et, le cas échéant, réparer vos freins par des professionnels qualifiés. Cette étape est essentielle afin d’assurer votre sécurité!

peut contaminer un million de litres d’eau potable. Confiez donc votre vidange d’huile à un mécanicien, qui s’en départira correctement!

Protégez votre voiture : offrez-lui un traitement antirouille!

LE SAVIEZ-VOUS? Lorsqu’une voiture plonge dans l’eau, elle peut prendre jusqu’à trois minutes avant de s’y enfoncer complètement. Ainsi, les passagers qui gardent leur calme et qui ne sont pas gravement blessés ont généralement assez de temps pour s’extirper du véhicule en passant par une fenêtre.

La saison froide est particulièrement propice à la forma- tion de rouille sur votre véhicule. Le sel de déglaçage utilisé sur les routes, l’humidité et les précipitations fa- vorisent la corrosion, un phénomène d’oxydation qui entraîne la désagrégation des métaux. Pour prolonger la durée de vie de votre voiture, demandez à un spécialiste d’y appliquer un traitement antirouille! Cela permettra de retarder l’apparition de la rouille sur votre auto ou, si celle-ci s’attaque déjà à votre carrosse- rie, de freiner sa propagation. L’application d’un tel traitement est conseillée à tous les propriétaires de véhi- cules, car aucune voiture — neuve ou usagée — n’échappe à la corrosion. Les automobilistes qui sou- haitent garder la leur pendant encore au moins quatre ans ont tout particulièrement intérêt à la faire traiter! LES AVANTAGES DE L’ANTIROUILLE L’huile et la graisse antirouilles forment une barrière protectrice contre les abrasifs, préservant ainsi l’appa- rence — et la valeur! — de votre auto. De plus, elles empêchent la rouille de se former non seulement sur votre carrosserie, mais également sous votre voiture. Elles sont donc très efficaces pour prévenir la désinté- gration et l’affaiblissement de la structure de votre véhi- cule. Ainsi, lorsque vous demandez à des spécialistes

d’appliquer un traitement antirouille sur votre automo- bile, vous augmentez sa durée de vie tout en assurant votre sécurité! Enfin, pour améliorer l’efficacité de votre traitement antirouille, lavez régulièrement votre voiture — surtout en hiver! Ainsi, vous éliminerez une partie des résidus de sel et de calcium qui s’y sont accumulés. Soyez en- core plus assidu si vous gardez votre véhicule dans un garage chauffé, car la chaleur augmente les effets de la corrosion!

LE SAVIEZ-VOUS? Il est important de déneiger l’espace autour de vos pneus, car une accumulation de neige et de glace peut créer un frottement et accélérer leur détérioration. Pire encore, ceux-ci pourraient éclater!

LE SAVIEZ-VOUS? Pour dégeler la serrure de votre portière, il vous suffit de chauffer la clé de votre voiture à l’aide d’un briquet avant de l’introduire. Si vous avez du lave-glace sous la main, vous pouvez aussi tenter d’en verser une petite quantité sur l’orifice.
